  3. Back in the new dive last night , parking can be a misery in the downtown core , found a spot right in front of the bar. It was a Christmas miracle. Numbers were slightly down , but a good crowd , some wonderful regulars up to play. Good night. Just two bassists to sit in. The new room was sounding really nice. Not too loud , place was grooving. Usual rig , Bergantino 112 , Monique preamp into the effect return of a Bergantino Forte V1. Big orange hollow body Gretsch bass , Dano Longhorn as a backup (not played last night). Black leather Chuck Taylors. ( winter slippers)

  6. I had an old Cortina Estate (yeah, that dates this one) which was on its last legs: the next MOT was never an achievable dream, so, with it being well insured, I took to leaving it unlocked (with old Fords this was pretty much the same as locking it) when I was in Manchester city centre clubbing in the hope someone would nick it and I'd make money on the insurance. The best thing about it was the gear knob, which was made from a pool ball. I came back to it one night and the door was open...you can guess what was gone. I was gutted.

  8. Sadly up for sale a beautiful Shuker ‘flea’ style bass commissioned by @walshy in 2017-2018. It plays like a dream and with the lane poor pickup sounds amazing. I didn’t think I’d sell this, but with a series of events that will make 2024 stand out as bad I need to start prioritising other things. Id never played a Shuker before I got this one and I have to say the build quality, playability and overall feel of the bass is superb. Comes with a fitted Shuker Hard case I’ve never been keen on shipping anything over £500 but I’m happy to drive and meet up at a services or other location. Here are the specs from Shuker: 34” scale 22 fret 1.5” nut width 22mm deep at 1st fret 24mm deep at 12th old C profile 7.25 fretboard radius maple neck maple fretboard off white face dots, 6mm 2mm white side dots small fret wire two way truss rod carbon fibre reinforcement satin neck lacquer drilled for fender size tuners (schaller) bone nut bad a$$ III bridge lane poor pick up Aguilar OBP- 1 pre. Shuker hiscox branded hardcase. 8.5Ilbs on my non digital bathroom scales. due to the reason for sale I’m not interested in any Swaps or part exchanged atm.

  12. I don't usually take a handbag... But I do have special socks I always wear; they're either orange with zebras or yellow with spaniels. Pants-wise, I tend to go with black cotton trunks that helpfully say "Mr. Big" on the waistband.

  13. For those with pedal boards, Fx, Class-D amps, cables, mics etc... Use an accordion case for all of that stuff. No-one will nick that. ... Probably.

  16. Apologies one and all, I have been remiss in my duties as caretaker of this year's thread and missed the end of October/start of November summary. So, here is your end of November/start of December roundup. One fell in October, and one fell in November. That leaves 18(!) still standing with just under a month to go. Impressive stuff folks - stay strong, you remaining 18; you're nearly there!

  17. Can't believe this is still here! This is one of the nicest sounding fretless basses I've ever heard. The asking of £1000 is likely a 3rd of what it would cost to buy this new now. If I was still playing big basses, I'd have to jump at this. Someone please buy this, treat yourself!

  18. I’ve got the NUX Mighty Plug Pro, it just plugs straight into your bass and then plug your headphones into the unit. Links with an app called Mighty Amp, or there’s another version called Mightier Amp. Links to your phone via Bluetooth for playing along to tracks. Pre loaded drum tracks, and the ability to make your own patches via the app with lots of effects

  19. Sold my Doom2 and Octabvre Mkiii few months ago. Really missed it and realized it has been part of my core sound for the stuff I do. So I bought them again. Went for the Octabvre mini in limited edition colourway this time. Glad I did. Sounds more organic and open than the mkiii. Now I’m contemplating if I should complete the 3leaf Trifecta but at the same time I don’t want to go for a bigger board to expand. 3LA is amazing!

  21. We (Choked) were at the Marrs Bar in Worcester last night supporting local band Phon's album launch. Twasn't very full, perhaps 40 peoples and they all sat round the outside like cool muso types (I usually do this too). As everything was a bit late - I hadn't been able to arrive till after 7pm so no sound check - we did our short'n'sharp 30 minute set (probably a blessing to all!). However, all went fine, drummist managed to finish on 3 in "Knockout", I did my bass solos with extra widdles'n'pops and all was generally groovy. As there was a fine PA (with obligatory overloud bass drum thwack) I just took the Markbass 2x10 to be powered by the Crown amp with DBX compressor and BBE pre, all front-ended by Helix and Parker bass. Shoes were zebra striped brothel creepers. Got home by 2230 to a nice dram of PC7 cask strength...

  22. Not good, fortunately not too much of a loss monetary wise. I never leave my vehicle unlocked when loading in/out if on my own, but prefer to do the relay thing where the vehicle is never unattended whenever there’s anything in it. Similarly I also like someone on guard with the gear in the venue.

  23. It's no help now, but we always do a kind of relay where one person is always in attendance at the car, even at quieter locations. It just takes one opportunist walking past and a thousand pound guitar is gone in seconds.

  24. Shoulder injury and non-improving back issues have led me on a journey to ultralightweight basses, i.e., below 6.5 lbs, which is reluctantly why I am now sadly selling this beauty. It is actually quite lightweight, at only 8.3 lbs, but I have become accustomed to my ultralight (Spector RST) basses now and a new Sandberg SL. This Stingray is funking Chic awesome and was my main gigging bass throughout 2023 and early 2024 - I think the bass is a 2018. I do love this bass and will regret it when it is gone, no doubt, but needs must. Proper Stingray growl! It probably has 2-3 small user marks, but certainly nothing that sticks out and are in the pictures—it's actually in excellent condition, TBH. The Ska sticker is easily removable. It also has a D tuner with the original tuner included, as already stated it is a lightweight bass, low action on a silky super smooth roasted maple neck, DR strings (I think), beautiful grain, and an MM case with the MM case candy. Sale only please. I'm in Plymouth and happy to courier at cost to buyer. Bargain- £1600

  25. This weekend after the Sunday night Bandeoke I received glowing compliments for my sound. Not from the sexy barmaid of course but her pasty male sidekick. Naturally I assumed he was a bass player, and naturally I was correct. Still, I'll add it to my book of compliments received over my 40 year career (I think this makes it six in total) and very nice it was too. I glanced back over my shoulder and thought how pathetic the rig actually looked. Anyway he plays an Ampeg tube head through a big old Ampeg cab so take a bow, Barefaced, Harley Benton, and Behringer pedals 🤷🏻‍♂️ That's the rig circled in case you missed it.

  26. (No one ever asks, but let's pretend.) People are always asking me how I build my pedal boards. It seems I use a different set up every week they say. Well here's my 'work in progress' board. It's an old music stand which sits in front of where I sit when I'm awake. If I'm inspired to try something I bung it together here and give it a blast. This week @Quatschmacher in a different post talked about two envelope filters in parallel. I tried it and then thought what if I switched one for a phaser? What if I dirtied the clean sound?, and so on. I then do my lesson work, or song, learning, or noodling, and use the effects while doing so. If anything works particularly well or sounds appropriate for a specific song the whole set up might make it to a board. If not it gets ripped out and replaced when the next idea lands.

  27. weird enough nobody went for the Plank bass when it was for sale here. I think it’s a step above the JD sig: quality woods and hardware and NO control… i’m still super happy with it, and it cost me less than the JD sig… even weirder… the JD sig will sell for more with time and the Plank is probably impossible to sell although it’s worth double or more if you ask me..

  28. Great intro to 6 string, and probably not too difficult to shift due to the F word. Hopefully they’ll still be around at a good price next year when I’ve financially recovered from Christmas. Still gutted I didn’t buy a Squier Vista series Musicmaster when they were selling for £100 in the late 90’s 😂

  29. DR = Dynamic Range (e.g. the ability to capture the shadows to the highlights. In difficult lighting conditions you'll compromise the shadows or the highlights (e.g crushed blacks or blown highlights). The higher the dynamic range, the better.

  31. Teaching is a skill all of itself. I’ve had ‘lessons’ with incredible musicians, but learned very little. Effective communication is key, as is an understanding of which ways people absorb and retain information. The ability to take a topic and present it in a way that is relevant and accessible to your students is essential

  36. Just to close out on this thread, following the purchase of Lilly, we played our first gig together on Saturday night up in deepest darkest Northumberland. As I was bringing the PA, I left my amp at home so this was a gig of two firsts, first full gig on acoustic double bass, and first gig without any form of backline. Relying solely on the FOH for monitoring was possibly a leap too far, so I will be using my IEM’s for the next outing, but other than that it was a massively pleasing experience and Lilly received a lot of compliments from the crowd comprising of friends of the band, locals, and others who had travelled to see us.

  37. I really don't get what all the fuss is about. Why is there this fascination with having the original, shagged out pots anyway? It's this kind of counter-intuitive stuff that drives people to put new innards in old pot casings. Pots die, it's a fact of life and heavy use. Replacing them is the sign of a well looked after and maintained instrument, no? I'm pretty sure even the most... invested classic car enthusiast isn't that concerned with having the original, factory installed spark plugs in the engine, are they? Or have I just opened up an entirely new and even wrigglier can of worms?

  39. There were lots of people taking photos and videos of our gig this evening, but unfortunately I wasn't one of them, so you'll have to make do with a brief description. We were at a very small pub that we've played many times before, but this year the dates just haven't aligned to get any in the book. So it was nice to revisit and kick off the Christmas season (it's ok, it's December now). As it's a tiny pub we decided to "go acoustic" again. We've done a couple of those recently and thoroughly enjoyed them. Tonight was fabulous. The crowd really enjoyed something slightly different and the place was rocking - especially when we got them to sing Since You've Been Gone. Playing the EUB was a challenge, from the sublime (White Christmas, Moon Dance, Stuck In The Middle) to the ridiculous (War Pigs, Witch Queen, Crossroads) Rig: Stagg EUB, Fender Rumble v3 500 combo, tinsel Footwear: black 8 hole DMs Edit: I must give a special mention to the guitarist for playing the guitar solo in Whiskey In The Jar... on a kazoo! 😂

  40. Supported local heroes, The Owls, for a St Andrew’s (St SkAndrews) night do, which was sold out, despite being £20 a ticket. 3 band line up and we were on first. Turned up early so we could get a proper sound check, man alive the big ass PA was über loud! We played well and folk were up dancing almost straight away, not bad for a 7:30 start. The one problem we had was the other 3 in the band decided to play Substitute, whilst I was playing I Can’t Explain; you can’t get the staff . Great comments from everyone and looks like we’ll get some work off of the back of it. My gear? JMJ Mustang through my M87 comp and VTDI, into the top act’s, bass player’s TC head into Ampeg 4x10, which was unnecessary really, as the sound I was hearing was all from the monitors.

  41. I think the invention of the internet created this new possibility whereby we can all share our opinions with each other, and we're all still reeling at the discovery that other people are genuinely not the same as us, like totally different things, do things completely differently, have utterly different politics, and yet are still somehow able to function in the world. So at the moment, a large amount of online activity is just people saying WTF to one another's opinions. I'm hoping that in due course everyone will get over it and we can move on to the next phase of whatever this process is.
