  1. A few years back, I interviewed Paul Belgrado, a Belgian luthier who makes amazing basses. A bit retro looking and amazing craftsmanship. His basses have always been at the back of my mind somehow. Until last week, when I met him at the Dutch Double Bass Festival. I played one of his basses and was immediately sold. So, somewhere this week, this baby is going to enter my house. Specs: Thermo alder body, maple neck, madagascar rosewood fretboard, TV Jones Thunderblade pickups, Hipshot hardware, pearloid inlay and Luminlay sidedots. It's so light, so easy to play and it sounds so killer. Like a Jazz Bass but just a little bit fatter.

  2. Saturday afternoon's adventure. My blues rock trio Toredown played a little blues club in Billericay called 'Blues at Barleylands'. They rent a social club every Saturday afternoon and put on blues acts - sometimes pro-acts that are on tour. We'd not played there before so didn't quite know what to expect - the deal is you get door money after they take out expenses but apparently guaranteed to get £300. The place itself is what you'd expect a small social club in the sticks to be like, a little bit jaded. Lots of tables and seating, large bar. Easy load in from the dedicated car park via the fire door. Slightly raised corner stage, lots of power points behind black sheets. Covered pool table for us to stash our cases. We arriveds early, set up and sound checked before most of the people turned. Who then kept on turning up, I reckon there were around 60 people when we kicked off - not capacity but busy for a small place. Well, what a reaction! To say we got a rapturous response would be an understatement. I know the band are good but the genre is rather love it or hate it. In the past we've played pubs and gone down like a lead balloon. We have our monthly residency at a music pub and that is brilliant but still get the occasional idiot distracting us. This lot, being a dedicated blues club, totally loved it. Huge cheers after every song (after most guitar solos, too), at the end people wouldn't let us get on with packing up, kept coming up to us wanting to chat. Even with me! Such a diffrent vibe from playing in a pub. No drunk tw@t shouting for Wonderwall. No drunks, in fact. At the end we were handed an envelope containing £500 - a much bigger payday than usual - and we sold some CDs, too. Absolutely fantastic. Post gig some lovely comments on their Fb page. They immediately booked us again for next year, too, promising a packed crowd as word gets around. I used my recently acquired Gibson SG - my go-to now - straight into the desk via a TC Spectradrive. Sounded good, really sits in the mix. Obligatory pic. Looks like I am doing a mic swallowing act.

  3. I recently bought this early 80’s JV Precision from a forum member. It’s beautiful and plays superbly but I got forced into buying an older bass so this needs to go. It’s a lovely neck with birdseye figuring. It sounds and plays brilliantly. Best of all is it weighs 3.6kgs! Some cosmetic dings but nothing bad the main chip is pictured. Comes with case and original scratchplate. The tuners have at some stage been replaced with higher quality but cosmetically correct Gotoh reverse tuners. UK only, pickup preferred but I will post at buyer’s cost. Please note this is a sale only no trades and no offers - selling for what Inpaid for it which is a very good price for one of these. Cheers!

  4. Our acoustic duo played this evening at what is now approaching a residency at The Lookout , situated on West Pier in Scarborough. The recent storms fortunately subsided so a mild evening with plenty of people around the sea front. Usual requests led set list from the capacity audience, with plenty of variety to keep us on our toes. We also had a bloke in from the PRS, who needed to know which songs we were playing, and seemed amazed that we didn’t know until we got started! Highlights included ’This Masquerade’, ‘Fire and rain’, ‘Watermelon Sugar’ and ‘Wichita Lineman’ amongst many others. I absolutely love playing this venue, the audience are all there to listen as well as help with the song selection, and are very appreciative of our efforts. We’ve just been given another half a dozen or so gigs there for early 2024, along with a couple of Xmas parties too so pleased we’re part of their ongoing business. The pier is being developed soon to be focal point of the harbour area, with shops and bars/eateries planned. The Lookout is going to be extended which will mean more tables / covers , so should hopefully ensure that our gigs there will continue.

  5. Satdy night pub gig up in the sticks Nelson way, main road, no car park, but I cared not a jot as my load-in these days is a rucksack with leads and Stomp, and my bass case. Just as well, there wasn't much room for the band. It was quietish (I suspect would've been even quieter without the rugby on) early, we were scheduled for a 10pm start, but the landlady asked us if we could go on at half past 'because it gets busy after that'...I looked at her skeptically, but it turns out it was one of those pubs where it's the last place open (1:30am closing) in the locality, so people end up there...sure enough, by 11 it was banging, which made a change from the last few evenings of sparsely-attended indifference we've had of late...it's also nice to see a well-run pub can still make live music work... Inears were, as always, a joy, and I was packed up and loaded in the now-traditional three minutes, which made the 35-mile trip home a lot easier...

  6. Quiet night for the Sunday Jam in the bar we call the Land of Dreams. Wet , and soggy. Rain and drizzle. We did’t get the regular crowd but had some good players. An old friend is getting back to playing bass , so it was lovely to have him up. The days are numbered in the old dive , it will change location in January. Parking and loading will not be as easy in the new location. It’s just a mid sized room and just vocals are in the PA. I can easily fill the room with a single 12 in cab. A Bergantino HDN , usually powered with a Forte head (the first version without the drive) and a tube preamp. I brought two basses , a Dano Longhorn from the first batch of reissues , and a vintage UniVox HiFlier Mosrite copy. The Dano still has the factory strings and has a wonderful old school thump , the Flier has some not too old chrome flats. Sometimes I will bring a Yamaha Samurai. I seem to have become a cheap bass , nice amp kind of guy. I’m ok with that.

  7. £270! This fantastic Sire Marcus Miller mild green is on for sale - I no longer play in bands/stage so I'm just keeping one bass and my Jad Freer Capo. No trades since I'm off stage. Comes with a Sandberg gigbag which as you know is very decent - this one is as new. Weight is great at 3.6/3.7kg if I remember well - no blemishes whatsoever, just a great P bass - you know how quick I jump to change electronics and whatnot but this one sincerely doesn't need it. Roasted maple, of course.

  8. Keep getting drawn towards the Euro LX in the matte black stain. I love the finish and the all black hardware. Lovely looking bass. Having said that, the new gold and blue colours on the Euro Classic are pretty fantastic too

  9. Wroot Rocks in Wroot near Doncaster on Friday night. It wasn't packed but there were plenty in. Apparently quite a few couldn't make it due to closed roads etc. caused by the weather. Abdoujaparov were on first and I loved it. It's just super tight, quirky rock and roll really, but a great show. They're fronted by Les Carter of Carter USM fame and he's a lovely bloke. Our set went really well, we sold plenty of merch and signed lots of stuff so that's a win. The promoter here really takes care of the bands with food and drink etc. A long drive back in the rain managed to kill the van not long after the dropped me off. I really hate the van, nicknamed Vantanamo for it's lack of leg room, cupholders, fans in the back... the list goes on, so fingers crossed this is terminal and we can get something I actually fit in! Here's a terrible low light photo from just before we started. Saturday in Corby at the Ex Servicemen's Club, which was very "pheonix nights". The venue was too big for the audience really, only about 40 people turned up, which is cool in a small venue, but this was a big old room with loads of horrible echoes. It sounded alright anyway, and everyone seemed to love it.

  10. Depped for a covers band on Saturday. I had agreed to dep for New Year’s Eve and a few weeks back was given a set list of 42 songs, of which I knew 6, had played another 10 once and the rest were completely new to me. Given the 3 month lead time, I was taking it easy learning one or two a week, until they contacted me last week to say they had a gig lined up for the 21st and their regular bassist was going to be in the US sorting out a family crisis. Somehow we fitted in two rehearsals beforehand and I did the gig on Saturday with chord sheets on my iPad. Amazingly, it went pretty well with me remembering most of the intro and must do cbass lines and jamming the rest. The punters at the village hall we played in the Norfolk Broads, were very complimentary and there were loads of dancers. No action shots but one of setting up below. All in all a great experience and good preparation for New Year’s Eve, despite 2 pm bedtime.

  11. You don't see many of these... Absolutely beautiful and near mint condition 40th anniversary P-bass. One of only 400 ever built and never reissued. Most incredible woods I've ever seen on a Fender, from the ebony on the fretboard to the Birdseye maple neck to the quilt maple top. Lace sensor pickups and Kubicki preamp. All original and includes original tweed case, certificate and case candy. The word 'top' has been written on the top side of the case which is actually quite helpful in making sure it's stood up correctly. Collection greatly preferred, I'm happy to travel within reasonable distance, but could post if necessary. Sale preferred but could be tempted by trades/px of basses or guitars, definitely prefer vintage items though.

  13. Based on my own experience, I'd say learn to play the music you like, first, by whatever means stimulates you. There is no right way other than the one which keeps you interested. You can move on the becoming the new Jancko Pansaurdius later, but start by finding the joy in playing music first.

  14. Now £225.00! I have way too many Rays, and I have just bought a US Stingray 5 so need to sell one to recoup some funds and make space in the rack. I bought this from 40hz on this very forum, and it is a really nice bass to play, and what a colour! Here is 40Hz original sale thread: I have put a new set of EB strings on and replaced the missing grub screw, all set up well and intones properly. Selling it for what I paid, but wont be heartbroken to keep it either (but alas, would be loft bound as my music room is out of room!)

  16. Handed my 414 over to a well-regarded local tech for a fret dress and setup (she's earned me lots of money over the last year, including being the House Bass at a regular weekly jam night (tho this has now finished)), and picked her up Satdy before my gig, and she plays and sounds as well as anything I've ever owned. If she was a pound lighter (and I wasn't such a collector) I could probably sell everything else...

  17. My rant; Just another thought for perspective. I'm 70 and I brag a lot about the fact that I'm still gigging 65 shows annually. However, it's because I'm in a good, smart band. Are we the best local band, no, but we're one of the smartest. We do things that are right for us. For those who follow my posts, you know I'm an advocate for good people over good musicians. I'm also into " good decisions ". For example, we've been around since 2007. We've been through the 3 gig weekends and the 4 hour bar gigs that are still prevalent in the States. When I say we're smart, I mean we're smart enough to know we've outgrown late night bar gigs. We've also avoided band drama and turmoil. Many of those band dynamics, drama, band turmoil and bad bookings contribute to guys giving up. It's not because they don't like gigging or being in a band but more not liking their particular negative band circumstances including age, medical and physical issues. I'll stop when walking on stage is no longer physically possible or no fun anymore. I can't really imagine it not being fun. Blue

  18. I bought this used from Bass Direct earlier in the year. I absolutely love the looks and weight but the neck is just a little too unwieldy for me. Condition wise it’s excellent. There’s one small ding on the back of the body and a few very minor, small marks which are pretty much impossible to photograph. Very little, if any fretwear. Hasn’t left the house since I’ve had it. Between 8.6 and 8.8 lbs on my electronic bathroom scales (only does .2 of lb increments). No trades, don't tempt me! Can ship at buyers cost/risk or collection/inspection welcome in Orpington BR6. I'll dig out the full specs but photos for now:

  19. SOLD For sale my 1985 5 string RSB Deluxe in black Works perfectly, but not in the best condition finish wise. Quite a few scratches in the finish and the odd ding, I have tried to photograph the worst of these marks, but as new she is not. Bought on a whim as I intended to have her cleaned up and possibly refinished but was cost prohibitive and I just don’t have the time, could do with a setup. There is some tarnishing to the gold tuners (as photographed) but the bridge remains in stunning condition. Not looking for a king’s ransom due to condition and happy to courier at cost to you within the UK. Cheers, Steve.

  21. I was so impressed with this rig that I spent the last 12 months trying to source the bigger brother, the WTX500. Well I finally scored that this weekend and 2 x EX112’s. I’m afraid my Markbass stuff will be taking a back seat for while as these Eden rigs just deliver something the MB doesn’t. So the rig I am selling really is wonderful and the 264 was barely used by the previous owner therefore remains in excellent condition. 250W’s and all fully going into a great lightweight 1x10 4 ohm cab, together they sound brilliant - perfect for rehearsals, cafe, smaller gigs etc. I should imagine great with a DB too. Bargain £250 posted for both in the UK but will knock some off if collected from Plymouth. May split.

  25. I would imagine that they would actually just assume you are lazy! I arrive, get all the stuff from the car, set up the PA, do the gig, break down the PA, load the car. If the drummer is there, I help him with the drum kit from the car and back to the car and he helps with the PA. The singer also carries stuff from the car and back, and does a little of the PA setup. The guitarist does FA. Because he is lazy. He stands around chatting.

  31. Valenti V21-J4 #146 Got this about a year ago in a trade with @dub_junkie. Will probably regret this but I've ran out of places to hide basses so some have to go! Swamp Ash Body Trans White Finish Graphite Reinforced Maple Neck Maple fretboard Pearl Block inlays w/White Binding 1-1/2" Nut Width Aguilar AG 4J-70 Pickups Tort pickguard HipShot Vintage Bridge, 19mm HipShot HB-1 Tuning Gears Sadowsky preamp with VTC control Very comfortable weight - will weigh in morning and update ad. https://www.valentibasses.com/archive2.html A couple of very, very minor marks but generally excellent condition. Neck and fingerboard have had gloss taken off with some wire wool so are satin. Could probably benefit from some new strings. Battery box has some cosmetic damage. Complete with Fender hard case. No trades, don't tempt me! Can ship at buyer's cost/risk or collection/inspection welcome from Orpington BR6.

  33. I got my Caveman Audio BP1 delivered yesterday, a very basic bass preamp, developed by Steen Skrydstrup in Denmark. Read the tech here: - Hi-Z Cable Input - Transformer-balanced gold-plated Neutrik XLR Wireless Input (on one model) - Transformer-balanced gold-plated Neutrik XLR DI - Transformer-balanced gold-plated Amp Out jack - Adjustable Gain and Level - Switchable audio loop - Transformer-balanced Tuner Output - 9VDC output (50 mA) for powering your tuner - Unique RFI protection and Silent Switching - 10 Year Warranty - Road-ready, zinc-plated steel enclosures Easy to use, two pots: gain and level, two stomp buttons for Mute and activate the Effects loop. I tried it in my home studio yesterday and has just one word to say: Wow! What goes in comes out, just better and more of it. This one will never leave... Well, to say more than Wow, it is truly a remarkable piece of gear. Studio grade at your feet. Harshness disappears, everything is more or less "soft and wooly" but with a clarity over the whole tonal spectrum. My plan is to use this preamp with just a compressor and a tuner, for a high end all analog signal chain. Next week I get the pedalboard delivered, a PedalTrain Metro 20. If I should complain about one thing, it is the 9 Volt outlet to power the tuner. It could have been "beefier" than 50 mA so it could power the compressor too, but that's no big deal. I chose the PB1 over the PB1 Compact, since I wanted a unit with REAL power and not the wall wart. I will add a power supply under the Metro too for any effects pedal to use in the loop. Maybe an envelope too... I got the BP1, my cat got the bubble wrap; both are happy...

  34. **SOLD** My bass clear out continues: For sale is a Warwick Thumb Bass from 1994 with original Bartolini pickups and the original Warwick hardcase. The bass was built in 1994 but has been lovingly cared for as it is almost completely free of blemishes - there is some wear next to the neck pickup - as seen in the photos. Otherwise, the bass is perfect and completely original. It has also just been freshly waxed, the fingerboard cleaned and oiled, new strings put on and a complete cleaning, maintenance and tuning. The electronics also got some love: all potentiometers were thoroughly cleaned with a high quality contact cleaner. They all work without any problems! The truss rod was also checked and works perfectly. The frets were also cleaned and polished and show only minor signs of wear. The heavily contoured body makes this bass super comfortable to play - as does the light weight of only 3.9 kg. The bass is very versatile in sound thanks to the pickup placement, active/passive switching and 2-band preamp. The Bartolini pickups are a perfect match for the Warwick woods and provide a very organic tone and the famous Warwick growl. If you have any questions, please let me know. I ship within Europe with a tracked and fully insured service so you don't have to worry. The bass comes with the original Warwick hard case. Bass: Thumb Bass Bolt-On 4 strings Serial number: G 383 94 Year: 1994 Month: July Number: 383 Neck: Wenge wood Fingerboard: Wenge wood Frets: Bronze Warwick frets Nut: Just-a-Nut brass version Neck construction: Bolt On Body: 2 pieces solid Bubinga wood Finish: Oil finish / Beewax finish Pickups: Passive Bartolini JJ pickups Electronics: Active MEC 2-band electronics Hardware: Chrome hardware, made for Warwick Made in Germany / 91330 Eggolsheim / Franconia-Bavaria

  42. ...and you'd be wrong; I've been trying to convince the BL that the band in general has waaayyyy too much gear for the pub gigs we play, my example is evident each gig...my other gigging band has literally half the gear. The drummer always arrives last, and because I set up last (see breakdown activities but in reverse...again, three minutes) I'll help set the PA and lights up and give him a hand, tho he's nearly 40 years younger than me and therefore far more qualified to lift heavy things...

  43. I've listened to that gig many times too when I'm in the mood for some easy listening dinner jazz. 😁 Remember seeing Derek Bailey once with a dj and keyboardist which was pretty out there; I also used to play in an improvising band where the drummer and I would play funk grooves and former associates of Lol Coxhill would go all Brotzmann over it. But for ultimate fusion, try this - it's like a fusion of all the hells from all the religions crossed with punk and jazz...

  44. First step would be to get whatever bass you have set up correctly - nice low action (so the strings are not really high off the fingerboard), nut slots are cut correctly for the same reason and to ensure that the intonation is good (so what you play sounds good and in tune). Making sure all this is done first will ensure that your learning experience will be a pleasant and fun one seeing that you won't have to fight the instrument needlessly. I wish I knew this when I started learning! I would have progressed a lot quicker if I had known.

  45. Yep: switch off Stomp, unplug power supply, unplug the desk feed lead and bass lead, coil into rucksack, put inears and transmitter/receiver in bass case with the bass, zip em up...done. 😃 If I'm feeling particularly philanthropic I'll lend a hand...I generally do one end of the gig or the other... 🙂 I arrived early (unexpectedly light traffic) just as the van with the PA, lights and guitarist/BL did, so I unloaded with them, but at the end I broke down the PA and left the three of them to it...I might get across the principle sooner or later that we need less gear...call it Tough Love... 😃

  47. Well having listen to a couple of tracks all the way through and at least a minute of everything else, I can't see what all the fuss is about. I certainly didn't find it "difficult" or "challenging". However I did listen to a lot of prog rock and fusion in the mid 70s while I was waiting for something more interesting IMO like punk rock to happen, and therefore it's not the sort of thing I chose to listen to these days. TBH based on what I have heard before I found it rather formulaic and dull. As others have implied it would probably work quite well as background music for a 70s pastiche TV show. On the whole it sounds to me music where technical ability on the instruments is more important than compositional skill, and that's not what I want to hear, a bit like the Knower track on another thread. At least that has vocals.

  50. After a break from playing i've been loving my Sterling 4HH in Trans Gold lately - checked out the website and they've totally decimated that range, 2 colours and single humbucker only?! Also can't believe the price these basses are running, I ordered mine through Bassdirect about 10 years ago and think I paid £1550! Calling their budget range "Sterling" is a crazy shout too, but I imagine there's already been plenty ranting on that front 😂
