  3. That's a nonsensical, illogical stance though. But I give you that if you stop 10 random people on the street, at least 5 will agree with you. In the real world however, the most talented musician most probably (almost but not wholly by definition) will be known by, and understood by, very few. The moment you people want to educate your kids, and think that newborn babies have little knowledge, is the moment your popular view has become a falsehood. Cue the Triangle of Knowledge. People who think that Paul McCartney is the most talented musician ever simply have no clue, and when they attack people like me for being condescending, they are in fact being arrogant themselves. It's the Dunning-Kruger effect at large.

  5. Needs a couple of prongs sticking out the top with a blue electrical wave arcing between them (and maybe a hunchback manically turning the dials as well).

  9. I know the last time I said something about not liking Prince's work, I got slagged off. I still don't like the vast majority of what I've heard of his. Like a latter-day Paul McCartney. Still, while it's OK to say what you like about Coldplay or U2, Prince is sacrosanct so I suppose I'll get slagged off again. I won't deny he's composed a lot of stuff and could play lots of instruments, but I'm not convinced of the merit of what he's composed.

  10. Looks like an original Mustang routing to me, especially considering that plate on the bottom, but someone has done a really awful job of perhaps trying to fit a standard Precision pickup in there at some point. If this routing wasn't on the original product description from Mr Baxter, I'd perhaps be having a quiet word, because if I'd known about that at point of purchase, I'd want a few extra quid off. Si

  11. Found images of your amp on Google, and as you say there is an external speaker jack on the front. This will do one of two things - either enable another cab to be added as well as the internal speaker in the combo (in which case will need to be at least 8 ohms?), OR enable another cab to be added whilst cutting out the internal speaker completely. Without knowing the spec of the amp and what ohmage it will work into it is dodgy trying another cab, especially if the former option is the case as it could do some damage. Only thing that may be okay is turn the treble up a bit so you can hear some hiss, then quickly insert and remove a jack plug into the socket - if the sound disappears as you do this you’ll know it disables the internal speaker. UK distributor for Stagg appears to be EMD Music in Surrey, tel. 01293 862612. Maybe worth a call to them for spec details. Cheers.

  12. When I'm playing acoustic pub jams, I often take my tiny Tanglewood Elfin bass. It's about 25" scale.... I'm 6' and yes, it does look a bit "toy-like" - but do I care? Nah! Actually, it's often my backup bass too - surprisingly, it sounds like a full size Precision (don't know what pickups they are, but they sound great) and it probably only weighs around a kilo..... maybe even less

  15. I've just been thinking it would have been Jimi's 75th birthday the other day, I would have loved to have been in Noel's place a few times! Who would you love to have played with? I first saw Hendrix on Hasting pier 22 October 1967, then again almost 3 years later in 1970 at the Isle of Wight festival, a couple of weeks before he met his untimely end. Would he have still been playing/writing today at 75 I wonder I'm getting old ?

  16. I bought this from another BCer a couple of years ago and haven't touched it in a year, so it's up for sale. This was bought and used as a quiet alternative to arco upright practice and I've upgraded the tuners/strings and stand to try and make it feel as close to an upright as possible. There's a small ding on the right hand side of the body - this is about 1cm long and can't be seen from the front; I've done my best to accurately photograph it. NS Designs EUB Amber finish with the following upgrades: Hipshot HB6Y tuners (£100) NS endpin stand (£120) Pirastro Evah Pirazzi strings (£160) Includes padded soft case, original tripod stand, original strings and an entry-level French bow. The bass is located in Teddington (TW11, just off the end of the M3). I would prefer not to ship it, and I travel a fair bit for gigs so could easily arrange to meet at a mutually convenient location. No trades I'm afraid.

  17. Was lured out by the rap thread, so I figured I'd make an official introduction. Have been playing off and on for the better part of two decades, mostly guitar, bass and vocals. Stuck with bass for most of it, and have done a few stints playing in bands of varying levels of (mostly low) success. Have a pretty hefty arsenal of bass gear: MIA Jazz, Stingray 4H, G&L SB-1, Peavey Foundation, MIM Jazz Deluxe 5, Mesa D800+ through a pair of Bergantino NV115s, Fender Super Bassman through a pair of Orange OBC115s. Predominantly play heavier styles, and have recently re-embraced the pick. Also have a fair amount of studio gear, and will be starting proper guitar lessons after the new year. Not good at fighting GAS, as indicated by recently picking up a Marshall 1960 stack for a song, which has rekindled the urge to practice the skinny strings. I'm also convinced that my pedals are breeding when I'm not looking. Follow F1 and MotoGP fairly religiously, and am making an effort to start watching EPL and rugby - willing to take any pointers for either of those (asking for a friend). Aside from that, looking forward to the Grand Tour starting back up and I'm hoping someone can explain why BBCA in 'murka seems to only play Star Trek: the Next Generation on loop. Cheers!

  18. @ordep - I see where you are coming from. But if we're talking about cheaper then second hand is the way to go, right? I've previously said, this only makes sense for me if I can pick up a relatively mint M900 at second hand prices, otherwise I could be 'wasting' £250 on the overdrive part of the amp which I may not particularly end up using. But there have been a fair few M900s coming up in the FS whilst, taking your example, a second hand Baby Sumo 1000 is going to be as rare as hen's teeth so I could be hanging around for a while... Secondly, I may be wrong, but I'm not convinced that overlaying a pedal EQ on an amp is going to be the same or indeed as effective as having the manufacturer of the amp attune the EQ of his amp to the rest of the circuitry? I guess an illustration of this is with the M900 itself: a good number of folk have mentioned that they find the microtubes on the M900 more to their liking than on a separate pedal, whilst others have said the opposite. The point is whichever side of that debate you come down on, it's clear that the external pedal overlay is not the same as the built in feature. ...AND NOW HOPEFULLY BACK TO THE MAIN THREAD AFTER OUR BRIEF M900 DETOUR

  21. Beastie Boys are there unsung heroes of hip hop IMO. When you have Miles Davis calling Paul’s Boutique one of the greatest albums of all times it’s worth a listen. Not sure what to make of all the mumble rap lately though. It definitely smacks of uninspired, but I also leveled the same criticism at most of the Bad Boys stuff (Puffy, Mase, etc).

  22. Yes. The Close to the Edge tour and lineup. Playing bass with Wakeman, Howe and Brufford. Even the thought of it blows my mind. Plus using all the old Sunn gear. Wow.

  27. Personally I love rap and hip-hop. A source of brilliant basslines a lot of the time too. Nas' Illmatic is probably the best example of thought-provoking lyrics, great instrumentals, tasteful samples (especially that Michael Jackson one, damn), and catchy hooks in the genre. I'd highly recommend it as a gateway to those who aren't familiar with rap. It paints an incredible picture of 90's NYC. Elzhi's cover of the entire album is also excellent. He re-recorded it with a jazz band (who are absolutely superb) and played around with the lyrics to make it contextually relevant to his life and Detroit (rather than Nas' life in NYC).

  29. Very cool, yeah he's a good guy! And definitely a cool bass. It's a good idea to have the mess of a rout tidied up to actually accommodate a Precision pickup. But if it were me, I wouldn't do this until I thought I might sell it, just so you could then use it as a 'feature'. As it is now, enjoy it, can't see it under the scratch plate, and actually probably makes the bass that little bit lighter haha. Si

  30. I think Sibob has hit the nail on the head. It looks very much like an amateur attempt to fit a regular precision pickup in there (seems to happen a lot to old mustangs). It won’t affect what is still a cool bass but you should have been informed and the seller should have known about it, especially as I thought he dismantled most of the basses he has in, or used to. You seem to have been really concerned about the bass from the start so I think you would be perfectly within your rights to return it. If it was me, I would suggest seeing if there was some haggling room and seeing if you could get a decent chunk off what you paid. As the Bass had been modified anyway, I would perhaps look at having the route properly done for a Precision pickup to smarten it up, and you have the option then to swap in the future. I doubt it would do anything to the value, especially if you have the work done by someone with a lot of credibility and shielded properly etc.

  32. I always send post EQ as well - the sound of the bass in our band is as essential a component of the bands sound as the guitar is, going pre EQ would completely destroy the sound of the band to the point where there wouldn`t be any point in doing the gig.

  40. Thanks for digging that out, Marc. Hmmm...from my perspective it does look very static and kinda feels both intimacy and vibrancy have been lost... This is for me what a double bass or its EUB equivalent should be capable of - I loved this performance by Imelda May and her band:

  47. If you are cutting out the front of house, it sounds like you are driving the inputs of the speakers far too hard and the circuitry is cutting the speaker in order to protect the components. Make sure that your sound guy knows how to gain properly and the input is set such that the speaker doesn't not peak. With regards to the crossover, you consider the PA system as a high and the crossover routes the frequencies coming from your bass to either the tops or/and woofers appropriately. An in appropriately set crossover wouldn't cause your PA to cut out - that would be the incorrect gain staging and pushing too hot a signal to the speakers from your desk's output. Set your speakers to 100Hz but with all honestly, with what you've said, it sounds like your sound guy isn't... and could do with a crash course before he/she causes damage to your PA speakers.
