Lyrics that changed your world

Recommended Posts

Dylan, Holly, Paul Simon, even Bono, has delivered lines that for me stopped me in my tracks,,and of course Johnny Cash, seemed to be to the most grown up adult heavy lyrics of all time,,then of course the Blues legends,,and Zeppelin,,,for an example, when B.B. King says the “ Thrill is gone “ he ain’t asked for your opinion,,he’s is telling you how it is.....but hey,,I’ve prob missed some education along the way,,,if you could choose one line from one song,,,that had a massive impact on you,,what would that be?

Couldn't have put it any better. A firm fave for me.

"Oh, oh  Smokestack Lightnin, shining, just like gold,............... Why dont you hear me crying"   Howlin Wolf. Taught me the power of music at a young age.

Some of my favourite songs, the ones that stop me in my tracks, I have no idea what they are about. I couldn't even recite all the lyrics. Ask me about the Bass line and I'll talk for hours. In fact, looking back, it was quite a profound moment when I realised I was a Bass player, or, that I definitely must pursue the instrument: I only ever 'sang' bass lines to songs!

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.

In a similar vein "shorter of breath, one day closer to death".

And "we're just two lost soles swimming in a fish bowl, year after year".

And "but for the price of tea and a slice, the old man died".

Class.

If the real Jesus Christ was to stand up today, He'd be gunned down cold by the CIA, Armageddon Days Are Here Again by The The. Or most of Carter USM s output. Some of the truest words I've heard spoken have been song lyrics.

Pretty much anything/everything off Aladdin Sane.

It helped that the lyrics (with the exception of the Stones cover) were printed on the inner sleeve but as a kid really starting to eat, sleep and drink music it was an incredible experience listening to the album with the lyrics to hand.

The most mesmerising of the lot were the lyrics to Drive In Saturday that still have an effect to this day.

This does it for me, Mr Neil Young:

"Rockin' In The Free World"

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

If you had just a minute to breathe

And they granted you one final wish

Would you ask for something like another chance

Matt Johnson & TheThe - a fine body of work.

The shrieking of nothing is killing, just
Pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing

"Broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it.
Where are you tonight, child you know how much I need it.
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run."

Been mentioned already, but pretty much anything from Dark Side of the Moon. So much of is still very pertinent today over 40 years after it was written. Roger Waters was a lyrical genius back then.
