Wimborne Tivoli Theatre last night with The ELO Experience. Capacity crowd of around 500 in this nice venue in Dorset, although a five hour drive down from Yorkshire for us. Gig went well, and got to meet my cousin who lives in the area for a chat beforehand. Only a 20 min drive to the hotel afterwards too, so in bed before midnight. Onwards today to Dartford so hoping the M25 will be kind to us.17 points

Awesome fun. Katy Hurt and band opened the new south coast “Buck’n’Bull” pop up country and western themed night at Canvas in Bournemouth. Packed crowd all well up for it, and out of the ~350 strong crowd a fair percentage knew all the words to all Katy’s songs which was ace. It was fecking loud but that aside we had a blast 🤠16 points

Hello It has come to my attention that NBs need Declaring so here it goes 🙃 I’ve been considering getting a Reverend Decision P for a while, I tried to find one to try it first but couldn’t make it work, I researched youtube and the internet in general for info but there wasn’t so much and then last week, i jumped. It’s not the right thing to do (buying without trying) but I must say this time it worked out for me. My midnight black Reverend Decision P arrived today and I’ve been playing it all day. Love the thing. The way it feels, the sounds you can get out of it, the weight and yes also the way it looks. I will probably change the strings to flatwounds but in the meantime here’s a little vid and a photo for happiness Hope everyone is well DDR NBD.mov10 points

Well, this was a fun project!😁 I fancied a cheap 1x15" to go with my Markbass LMII and Ashdown ABM Mini 15 practice rig, so kept my eyes peeled. I came across what was once a Trace Elliot combo in a very sorry state, but it was only £20, and I do LOVE a project! I trimmed off the section where the amp used to be, flipped it on its side, plugged the old handle routs and speakon hole (installed by the previous owner), and sanded it all up. Painted with Tuff Cab, new corners and handles, painted the grille with satin black Hammerite, and created a new location for the speakon connector. Et Voila! Really pleased with how it's come out, probably cost me about £70 all in. 👌 Just waiting on replacement port rings now, which @SamIAm is kindly 3D printing for me. One original was missing and the other was cracked.9 points

This afternoon/evening. Played for a friend's birthday, our biggest stage with this particular band and only the second with laptop backing tracks. My first time running the laptop and one minor hiccup but overall it was a great performance. We are in a good place and really enjoying it 🙂9 points

After depping for them last year in the US, Becky has now joined the legendary Danes on a permanent basis. It's fabulous news and I'm totally made up for her -- she actually depped for me in the Destroyers once about a thousand years ago, and since then I've watched her star rising higher and higher, with bands like Hands Off Gretel and Fury. The year is 2001. 11-year-old me is at the local music shop to buy my very first fretless bass. There are two available. One is a Yamaha RBX270F, basically the fretless version of the RBX170 I started out on, 2 years earlier. The other one is an amber coloured Yamaha TRB 5IIF I instantly fall in love with. Even at my age I immediately feel: this is it. This is the one. I want this bass. But the TRB is over twice as expensive as the RBX and the RBX is also pretty cool (because it’s black, you know how it goes). So I got the RBX. No problem, I’m happy with my bass. Two years later I buy my first fretless Fender bass. The wish for a TRB was still there. I had a fretted one (also amber), I had a defretted version of the TRB I (the one with the slap cut), but never that one. The amber coloured, fretless one. Fast forward to late 2022. I visit Dutch bass player Phaedra Kwant for a second episode of my podcast Basgasten. We chat a bit after the recording, and happen to stumble upon the subject of the fretless TRB. She says “well, I have a fretless amber coloured TRB that I bought from that very shop around that time. And I still have it.” So she gets the bass and hands it to me. And I feel immediately: this is it. The one that got away. So I ask Phaedra to pleeeaaase think of me first should she ever sell it. And then it’s December 2023. I get a text message: “Hey man! How’s life? I’m seriously considering selling the fretless TRB. Are you still sentimentally interested?” And so, this morning, I went to Phaedra’s studio and take home the bass I wanted to take home almost 23 years ago. And it’s still as amazing as it was 23 years ago.8 points

G&L L2000 USA late 89 90 ish fender signiture pre fender law suit bass Well sometimes you have to let a few gems go, and here is one of them. This if from my G&L collection, and i have had this since about 92 when i px my stingray for it for the extra sounds it had over the stingray it was 2nd hand then but not used so its about 89 90 ish, i sold it once to a chap that never used it and kept it under his bed so i bought it back of him, Its in amazing condition and really belongs in a collection, it has fenders logo on the headstock which leo was forced to remove by fender, i do have along with its original warrante cards a letter which was sent to all the uk distributers telling them of the lawsuit and all G&L products will no longer carry the leo fender name, so here is a rareish bass that slipped in just under that date, its in its original case, also in amazing condition, it still has the curved finger board left over from the E series like they did on the early fenders and also has the "B" serial number like the early Musicmans, its all original and unmolested, and sounds great, i have used it on a few recordings and released tracks, and on one live tape, a shame to see it go after such a long time owning it but, we are all just keepers for now, so up for grabs is very nice getting on 40 year old bass in stunning condition not to be missed as i am sure it will be a long time before another as good will pop up. im not asking alot all things considered, just a fair price for a great bass, i will take a px for studio outboard gear, or a px/swap for a fretless L2000 ( Unlined fingerboard only please) i don't need other basses amps or fx thank you So...im looking for at the mo........ yamaha REV7 or REV5 Reverb units yamaha Pro R3 reverb, TC Finalizer, Electrix Mo Fx, Novation KS Rack synth G&L L2000 Fretless (consider jazz fretless unlined only) Mackie D8B Desk Mackie HDR OR MDR 24 track Recorders Old Roland TD5 drum brain (TD5 only) frontier apache adat patch Korg synth 01/w (not M1s) Nord Electro or stage 88 Nord synth collection is from ellesmere port only or org your own collection, but would pref it collected so you can try it. cheers all all his friends are sad to see him go, i think they are throwing a party for him... arrrr thats nice of them 🙂6 points -
Just got in from a Spacewasters gig at Signature Brew in Haggerston, London, first gig with our new guitarist and the singer just doing stand up vox having now dropped guitar. Went really well, one of those gigs without sound check, just plug in and off you go. No errors, very receptive audience and home in time for an Uber kebab and Match of The Day (with Lineker muted of course).6 points

I picked up a V5 24 fret. Colour is more subdued in person. Camera on my phone makes it look brighter than it really is and doesn't capture the soft almost pastel hue under artificial lighting. Really impressed with the fit and finish of this bass.(fret ends could have been a bit tidier but sorted that) This V5 could well be a keeper!6 points

For sale is this Fender Precision 5-string which I bought new from Anderton's in 2016. I did around 80 gigs with it until my band split up in 2020. I've not played bass since and it's been languishing in its case. Time for it to go ! Condition overall is good. There's light scuffing on the back and front of the body as you might expect from the use it's had. There are also a couple of small indentations on the back of the neck around the 5th and 9th frets. I've done my best to highlight these in the pics. Bass comes with the original Fender hardshell case and some case candy including the truss rod tool, Allen keys and strap but not the key to lock the case unfortunately. Looking for £849 but am open to offers. I'm happy to meet up / deliver within 50 miles of Shrewsbury or will post. Looking at Parcelforce postage to UK mainland would be around £40 including insurance but I'm happy to use the courier of your choice. *I’m driving to Worthing in May so could deliver in that area. 2021 Status Stealth for sale Specs: 4-strings, gold hardware, headless, standard electronics/pickup configuration. Active EQ. One-piece of moulded graphite, no longer available to order from Status. Condition Essentially brand new apart from use at a few rehearsals. Only very minor surface marks - no dings, dents, or deep scratches. Minor signs of use on the frets. Comes with all the original documentation and Status hard case. Collection only from West Yorkshire, UK. An absolutely beautiful looking and sounding bass. Looking to move it on as it's just not getting the playing attention it deserves from me. It should be with someone who's going to pick it up and play it on a daily basis. Picked up one of these odd Japanese basses today. Just couldn’t resist it😣. Not totally a barn find as it wasn’t for total peanuts but it was cheap. Cleaned it up restrung and fixed the action. Some marks on the body as you would expect from a 40 year old bass, neck is super clean and bizarrely it works, not even a crackle! Sounds great, lightweight and strangely cool to my eyes. Any info much appreciated. Needs new knobs and it looks like they should be black speed knobs. Bridge a wee bit discoloured and oxidised I think the saddles should be gold so maybe see about replacing but it works. Quite pleased!5 points

It's an Ibanez SRMS805 in brown burst. I like it but the close string spacing means it's not for everyone. Brown burst does sound like result of a bad takeaway5 points

Decided to pay Peach Guitars Colchester a visit ( appointment only ) to try out a couple of Fender Performer Series PBass Firstly a huge thankyou to Peach, amazing service and a lovely experience The bass is absolutely perfect and a nice step up from a Player Series and more choice of sounds which was my aim. Not exactly set up. Most of my pedals are still boxed up at the moment. Just dug out the MXR for comparison. I’m finding the filter at about 1 o’clock gets closest to the OC-2 thing. The more open settings are pretty gritty; I’d likely not use them on their own but probably would sound good going into an envelope filter. Being able to further lower the lowpass filter cutoff frequency on the octave down does give some nice fatness when blending in the clean signal. For soloed octave down I think I might slightly prefer the MXR; there’s not much difference, mostly in when the note starts to “bloom” (higher frequencies coming in) after being struck. It varies from note to note as to when it happens. On the Cog, the bloom happens slower overall I think. For dry+octave I think the Cog has the edge as the octave doesn’t seem to dominate the blend as much as the MXR does. When setting up, I matched the clean volumes of both pedals and then the octave volumes of both pedals (with dry muted) and then blended at those noted settings. (Filter on Cog at 1 o’clock to tone match.) Oddly though, I find I have to back the octave down off on the MXR when blended to get it to sound as transparent as the Cog. The MXR dry signal seems to be at unity at noon. The Cog seems to be at unity on maximum. With the octave down it’s almost the opposite. When the MXR octave down is at maximum the Cog matches it at its noon position. Having the switch the two channels is really nice. The Cog has a slightly dirtier tone overall. (I don’t mean this negatively at all; it seems to have a bit more “character” whereas the MXR is clean, almost to the point of sterility. It reminds me of the slight grit in vintage synths compared to modern ones. I like it.) This might be something to do with the tracking circuit; the MXR tracks a smidge better for me on the “problem” notes and isn’t as audible when just nudging strings across the pickup as the Cog. It could easily also be to to do with the aforementioned “bloom” happening later so there aren’t as many mid frequencies fighting with each other at the beginning of the note. Not sure if I’ll keep it yet. Can’t fault it at all, I just am not playing much bass at present, have a thousand and one more pressing things to do and could probably use the money for more pressing family stuff.4 points

If it's what you want (and it sounds like it is), the relief will be tangible when you're done. It was for me when I realised I didn't have to go to the browbeatings that "band practice" swiftly became. Personally, I'm not selling up. I've started to enjoy playing again. I went across to Overwater in November to discuss getting a bass built. Chris gave me a guided tour of the workshops. I got to meet all the team a very talented bunch of guys. Me and Chris sat down and we discussed exactly what I wanted for the bass specs wise. I also had a good chat with Martin the Workshop manager about different woods they have in stock. Here are the specs I went for in the end. Body - Mahogany Neck - Five piece neck through fretted 40mm nut Facings- Top - Back & Headstock Burl Maple - stained Fingerboard - Ebony with Burl Maple block markers. I have been having a clear out since I took early retirement last year. Here is my 2017 Fender P MIM Standard in LPB. It has been fitted with Seymour Duncan SPB1 Pick ups as I found the original pick ups were a bit 'polite' Originally, it came with a white pick guard which has been replaced with a black one. It does have a ding on the upper forearm chamfer which I have shown in picture. You cant see it from the front though. For an extra £30 I can pack it in a vintage looking tweed Gear 4 Music hard case. £550 £370 posted to your door (Unless you live in a tent!) 😅3 points -
Tonight: Oktagon (it's got a K in it) in Knowle - the posh end of Solihull (it makes Didsbury look like the bronx) with the rock band. The guitarists's missuses joint 40th with a friend. I was a bit dubious as it was a very posh bar in a very posh area, full of yummy mummies and I didn't think we'd be their cup of tea/glass of Prosecco, but the birthday girl has seen us loads of times, so she knew what she was in for. We started at 7 (!), the first set went down OK, the second set went down loads better and the place was rocking by the end. Hooray! Played the Jazz for a change -> small board -> Sansamp -> Markbass CMD121. There was wood-fired pizza for afters. Mmmm. Done by 930, home for 10. It was my first gig with the ACG custom earplugs in... bit weird at first, I felt a bit disconnected and like the band lacked a bit of ooomph. Got used to them after a bit, and found they helped with the BVs as I could hear myself through my headbone. A good night, all things considered.3 points

The quietest passive bass I own is the one where I shielded the pickup cavities and the control cavity with copper tape and connected all the shields together with the bridge earth and to the earth lug of the output jack. Not even a badly wired fluorescent light will affect it.3 points

Focusrite Compounder was what I used to use in my rack Dbx160 Drawmer Joe Meek 1176 La2a Whatever you can find thats decent project to pro studio will work. Less is more for on stage always on compression, the devil is in the detail of the attack and release times. Keep the ratio low and take the threshold down till you get at absolute most 3dB of compression. 30 to 50ms attack 60 to 100ms release You shouldn't really hear or feel it much until you play in a mix and at that point it just adds a bit of punch and clarity to everything IME3 points

I've been playing drums for well over half a century, on and off, and my current retirement has not led to any symptoms that I can't deal with. Quite the opposite now; I get renewed pleasure when I do 'get back on the wagon', especially if there's a gig in the offing. For a few years (many years ago now...), I was playing either at home, practicing, or out gigging, all day, evening and night, every day, so it was rather a respite when I did get a little bit of time off. It's so easy to fall into the 'burn-out' trap from excess of zealous over-playing. It's useful to take a break, even a short one, for re-appraisal, and pick up on other aspects of Life.3 points

Been doing a bit more tinkering, got rid of the 'tone toggle' switch and installed a regular tone control with orange drop. Much better for my tastes! Easier to dial in a sweet spot and not have all or nothing. Just used since knobs I had spare from my 5 string build recently. YES that is a massive washer underneath! 🤣 Turns out the toggle hole was pretty big, so found a washer in the shed the right size. 😏🤌 In terms of refinish, current favourites are: a) leave it as it is b) the Manilla light green pictured above c)... Let my 11y/o arty son go at it with his Posco markers! 🤷3 points

I don't really play five strings but ended up buying two of these over the years as really like them so one has to go!! This one is in excellent, near mint condition - there are no chips, dents scratches etc. The chrome is pretty much free of any pitting. There can't be many around in this sort of condition. I've owned it for nearly 14 years and it hasn't had a great deal of use in my time (an absolute waste...). It comes in a generic hard case and has the original checker plate scratchplate as well as the red one fitted. £725 collected from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.2 points -
