I've started the neck carve and the final sanding. With the neck I still have probably 1mm to take off the thickness and I have to move from a U profile to a D. With the sanding, I have to do the cutouts, the tail, anything I've missed and then re-establish the edge radii. But, as many of you will know, I find it very useful to apply a quick coat of Tru-oil as a 'revealer'. I don't know about other builders, but I find it exceptionally difficult to spot sanding marks, dips and dints in a dry sanded body. So still loads to do here, but that sealing coat gives a decent indication of the wood tones that will be there in the finished article. So it's time for a mockup : I think that's very promising12 points

Kyle already owns the biggest music instrument manufacturing brand in Korea called Dame. Through a process of mostly unbelievable luck as well as diligence, he established Sire with Marcus Miller without any industry support or representation in the US. Kyle describes the US musical instrument industry as a cartel (37:50 and 49:00) because despite having Marcus Miller on board, noone at NAMM 2009 was interested in representing the brand. Kyle also mentions that, according to Marcus, his instruments were directly responsible for the break between Marcus and Fender (40:00). They also talk about how bass prices for established bass brands have crept up way beyond the costs of manufacture (21:30/22:00) which kind of ties into the Ernie Ball Specials thread. It's a long watch at 90min but worth it if you're interested in a discussion about the state of the industry.9 points

My wonderful wife has very few flaws. but one thing I cannot accept is the relentless use of voice notes instead of text messages by her and her mates, and colleagues. On WhatsApp they press and hold the mic icon and witter on about whatever, so an inordinate amount of my life is spent listening to... ”well, she came round and I was like - what you doing here at this time, and I was like...” and ”are we doing week 3 of Macbeth with year eleven from Tuesday or Wednesday because I’ve not got the PowerPoint ready yet” It does my head in. So on another thread I posted some music. I’d already sent it to a select few - now @Cuzzie is someone who I respect massively and I really appreciate his enthusiasm and healthy constructive criticism... Today was different, he replied with...A VOICE NOTE. Not one for swearing or violence... here’s how I replied7 points

Ebola lasted for 3 years (although they still have outbreaks now). We have 38000 people in hospital in the UK and 1400 Covid deaths yesterday, and during the week it almost hit 2000 per day. The UK doesn't have a robust test and trace system, it's always too slow and doesn't react hard enough. The result is that the UK is never ahead of the situation. In many ways the whole of Europe is treating this as flu outbreak. In countries that have dealt with it more effectively it's been treated as SE Asia treated the SARS outbreak... EDIT: And just to illustrate where priorities are in the UK, I've just seen on my Facebook feed that Taunton Race Course, which is one of the mass vaccination centres (aiming to vaccinate 900 people a day) was closed today for...the horse racing meet.5 points

I'm really not sure how long I've had this, I would have bought it in the mid 2000s. This is the second time I've sold it! I bought it back after the first time because I missed it, but it has subsequently sat in its case for years as I moved towards more Fender-ish stuff. But it is a LOT of bass for the money. Think BBNE2 on a budget. The only real issue with it is that the bass control doesn't really boost the bass, so it may be that it needs some work done on the electronics. TBH it never bothered me as I always used my amp/preamp if needed. There is some buckle rash/scratching on the back of the bass, especially on the plastic control cavity. The finish has also gone a bit shiny under the popping area around the neck pickup; this bass has been played. There are 3 small nicks on the back of the neck which I have tried to show in the photos. They are maybe BARELY noticeable when playing. Weight is 4.4kg or around 9lb 11oz using bathroom scales. It will come in a basic hard case. £500. I’m happy to talk about couriers and arrange one at your cost. I would rather have it collected but I don’t think Boris wants us to meet up at the moment.5 points -

One of my favourite things about my Roland VB99 is the selection of compressors built in. They’re (mostly) transparent, effective and most of all silent. They really are everything I could need and offer lots of adjustment not normally found in a pedal or rack format and also it’s great to save a setting for each bass. Trouble is that the Roland isn’t that portable especially considering it’s plunked into my home setup so centrally with all the cables etc hidden, so I’ve usually had a compressor pedal to take when going to a practice or jam. I’ve been using a Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter for a while and recently got another with the built in plug as usually it’s the only pedal I use. I really like them but have found that in the studio it does introduce a little noise and slight high roll off. Before that I used the Boss LMB3 which I thought was fantastic for the price. None of us are going out to play at the moment so I thought I’d get some new compressors to try at home in my unnecessarily strict test environment so I’m ready for the things I have booked in from the Spring. My main requirements: - Super quiet - High ratio/limiting - Battery option is a bonus - As transparent is possible at low ratio/high threshold with no tone loss Enter the FEA Opti-fet- I’ll give it a go on Monday, doubt I’ll get a chance before then. Sounds like a worthy competitor...4 points

CURRENTLY ON HOLD This one hurts but GAS is a GAS and must be obeyed. This is one of the American Deluxe line, which I think was being rebooted at that time. Active/passive switching, 3 band EQ, passive tone control. I have owned this from new (Aug 2011). It was my main bass for a while but has had a fairly easy life, especially since I moved back to 5 strings 3 years ago. A few dings on the body including one on the front, but nothing I can see on the neck. I had copper shielding installed shortly after I got it as it was pretty noisy, that took care of it and I never had any issues with hum or interference etc on stages. Weighs around 10lb going by the hallowed bathroom scales method. Comes with original hard case, in good condition. Now £800. I’m happy to talk about couriers and arrange one at your cost. My two Ibanez basses. I had an SR300 a few years ago as well. The SRH500 is lovely. It gets really close to an upright sound (especially if you put it through a piezo tone correction pedal; e.g. Zoom AC 3, or TCE BodyRez). It’s light, ergonomic and I love the neck. In fact it’s so good I have been thinking of putting a precision pickup in it and only having one bass at gigs. The Affirma is a bit more marmite. Also light and ergonomic but a bit on the bright side for my purposes. I am thinking of trying it with flats, or tape wound to see if that makes it rounder. The string spacing is a bit of a stretch for my short fingers but compensated by a shallow neck.4 points

I find the idea of pre marking a time as when things can open up again rather stupid. Stuff should open up when it is safe to open up, not at some prefixed date of when things should open up. We have had a much harder time of it than pretty well all other countries. Just do the hard thing now so we don't have to keep dragging it out4 points

Hohner Headless Bass Guitar Rare Original Passive Model in very good used condition with just the usual marks associated with normal use over the past 30 + years and most of which should polish out - see pics. Included is a Hard Case which is full scale length and has a split in the top - please see photo - plus a few dinks and donks, but it still protects as intended. Being the passive version, there is no battery to worry about, or battery compartment which in many cases are prone to damage. Maple body with ‘Through’ Maple neck and 24 Fret Double Octave Rosewood Fingerboard. The Licensed by Steinberger tuning system keeps this bass in tune far better than a conventional headed bass and is very lightweight at 3.5kg plus being headless, has none of the neck dive associated with many headed basses. Currently sporting Status Hot Wire Double Ball Ended, Light Gauge Round Wound Strings. The EMG Select pickups are very powerful and in my humble opinion, provide a far more natural sound than the active versions with the harsh sometimes ‘iffy’ preamp. The passive controls are Neck Pickup Volume, Bridge Pickup Volume and Master Tone control, which combine to offer a vast array of tonal variations ranging from Old School deep thump, to modern Hi - Fi tones. The Bass benefits from a bridge and fret Set up, which allows a nice low, easy to play action. Postage to UK Mainland only - sorry, in a normal headed size hard case & box, which I guesstimate would be around £25 to £30, or send your own courier or Socially distanced collection, if allowed. No, I wouldn’t want to bet on when pub gigs will get back to normal, because frankly I haven’t got a clue when that will be. We are currently running at around 1,500 Covid deaths per day and Britain has the highest number of deaths per capita in Europe. This is expected to last well into February. The UK’s vaccination programme is running into serious logistical problems (like others in Europe), but British exceptionalism demands that we create a few headline figures so the UK is pressing ahead with maximising the number of people who get the first vaccine without the follow up dose. Of course, this will do little to stop the spread of the pandemic. The only gig I’ve got in the diary for this year is a club in May. Until a couple of months ago, I was relatively optimistic that this would go ahead. However, this has been overtaken by events and we will not be doing that gig (and I doubt that the club would consider going ahead with it). As it happens, this was double booked with a mate’s wedding (already postponed from a year ago). They will go ahead with a small ceremony, but the big wedding and reception was cancelled before Christmas. I suppose that it is possible that there might be some sort of outside gigs with a socially distanced audience in the summer, but I’m not expecting to play a proper gig until winter next year at the earliest, quite possibly early 2022. I hope that there the Govt learn their lesson and don’t cave in and allow live music / pubs to open without restrictions too soon, otherwise we will be in the same position this time next year, wondering if there will be in any gigs before January 2023…!3 points

And put your Allen key to the max in the bullet (that's the way it's called) post of the truss rod, because the alloy of the bullet is softer than your keep. Everything will be fine and you'll avoid rounding the inside Allen imprint and damaging it forever. Also use the correct Allen key (metric and imperial is not the same).3 points
