  1. I have posted this pic before on BC. I just had to buy the shirt when I discovered it online and here I am posing with "Marilyn", my blonde double bass. I always get comments when I wear the shirt, especially if I'm playing "Marilyn".

  5. Jaccobs Ladder by Incognito. I saw him play this a few times on an F Bass 5 string live with Incognito at various venues.. When you hear the song it makes more sense. But non the less what a bass player. Met him upstairs at the Jazz Cafe when he was playing with Down to the Bone. What a lovely man he was.

  7. Its great marketing, established expensive brand, Famous players blah blah. Its nonsense imo. There not 5 grands worth more talented than the most expensive Sadowsky and the makers of Sadowsky for example, who just so happens to work out of the same city. Anyone who wants to pay that much, be Fodera's guest.. Its like a vintage Fender at £10,000 or what ever ridiculous price people pay for an instrument that cost the same as a standard Fender now at the prices they were back then. But no, hang on a minute.... its special because its 50 years old, it has that special vibe/tone, the wood has matured to give it a special something like a fine aged wine. Do me a favour..

  9. You got it quite right @NJE, but the main reason for this price difference is called cupidity on the seller side and stupidity on the buyer side. And the Fodera team has not such extraordinary luthiers, that said. If these guys were so terrific they would do a differential fretboard dressing and certainly not that stupid unscientific string anchorage called "extended B"... Any real luthier knowing his job will build you a terrific bass, with terrific woods, extraordinary pickups and fantastic preamp for 3000 to 5000 quids, depending on the number of strings you want. And exactly as you want it. Think twice about the price tag of such high end basses, there is absolutely no reason for it. It's just like in the audiophile world, prices are totally unjustified. It's only the marketing department making his job. I had an original Fodera Richard Bona, simply the worst bass I ever played or owned, stupidly heavy, dull sound without the preamp loudly engaged : always thought it was a cheap Chinese copy ... but it wasn't. I know I won't make friends here, but truth always hurts.

  13. Same here. I don't see the problem. Bear in mind as well that we're talking... electric bass guitars, of all instruments. What do I mean by that? Several things: 1. We're not talking about basics like food and shelter. For the vast majority in this forum, electric basses are a bit of a luxury, something we could live without. For those who actually make a living out of playing electric bass... 2. Nobody needs to buy a $5000 electric bass. You could spend a tenth of that in a very decent quality instrument. If you push me, you could even spend £100 and a little effort to get a bass that will do the job nicely and allow you to earn money with it. If you had to. So nobody is forced to buy that $5000 if it'sbeyond their means. 3. Electric basses! Be glad you're not playing a tuba instead! There's no real "cheap but nice" tubas out there.

  16. A new venue for us, extremely small space to perform, however great looking and sounding room and high end clientle that are into live bands. Place was packed, and the hours were decent, 9:00-12:00. I hope they ask us back, in a dieng vertical we need this type of new business. Blue

  17. The decision has now been made - With an upcoming house move (hugely downsizing to save for a house deposit) I'm not playing enough to justify keeping hold of my gear. I'm keeping one bass which will likely go into storage, but everything else is to go. Schecter Hellraiser V: The bass itself is in great condition. One tiny dink (which hasn't broken through the finish) near the jack, a small light scrape around the same area and same in a small section on the back of the neck. Barely noticeable and will try to get them to show up in some pics. Neck thru ,figured maple top,black pearl inlays,black chrome hardware Emh hz pickups,emg active 2 band eq,abalone bindings,black cherry finish G&L L2000 Tribute: These don't normally need much of an introduction. L2000 with the gorgeous black & maple combo. I picked this up around the time I was beginning not to play too much so it's not seen a huge amount of use from me. Excellent condition which hopefully can be seen in the pics. Now £320 Each Based in Dundee. Might be able to arrange a meet of some kind but I'd be reluctant to post due to not having a sturdy enough case to ship in. Any offers or questions please fire away

  18. You may have seen this on the For Sale pages recently. It's an early 90s ESP Horizon, complete with futuristic conputer lettering on the headstock. It's a very comfortable bass, and is in superb condition. But don't be fooled, it growls - it's brutal through my Tech 21 dug preamp. And seemingly endless sustain! I'm not convinced by the 3 band EQ - it's got a sweepable mid control, and the whole thing just invites endless tinkering. I can't stop tweaking it. No complaints about the sound though! A big thank you to @cetera for a fun afternoon! Here 'tis:

  20. Arrived today - and I absolutely love it! It's a 2018 custom and I can't fault a single thing about it. The build quality is breath-takingly good. Nice to be the proud owner of one of Adrian's 'M' brands again.

  22. The problem with a typical PJ is that the J pickup & potentiometer is in the circuit even when you turn it down entirely, and changes the way the "P"sounds. But one can rewire so that both pickups are isolated, and it'll sound more like a Precision... because it will be one. That's why I consider a P and a PJ distinct (somewhat similar, but distinct) and not because of the range of sounds that having two pickups give you.

  26. It's difficult to see from the photo but I doubt that the replacement cap needs to be a non polarised electrolytic. If you can see a polarity marking (+) or (-)adjacent to either leg this would confirm that it is just a standard electrolytic type. If there are no polarity markings then it could well be a non-polarised version, however I think that NP just possibly refers to the manufacturer. The schematic arrangement looks about right, ie C103 / C103 being set at around 100pf. 100P means 100 pico farad where as the cap you have taken out is 1 uF or micro farad. C102 / C103 along with R104 and VR101 will affect the negative feedback loop on the ic. They will set the gain and frequency response of the respective amplifier sections. The values indicated in the schematic look typical to me. I frequently come across discrepancies between schematic diagrams and silk screening on pc boards so I wouldn't let that worry you. You've clearly identified that the electrolytic cap has an intermittent problem so just replace it with like for like and hopefully that should resolve things.

If you look at the tension charts for those companies that actually supply this information, you'll find that the D string has the highest tension, and the tension of each string gets less as you go higher or lower from the D, with the lower tuned strings going down in tension more quickly than the higher tuned ones. For a standard 4-string bass the order of string tension from highest to lowest is D, G, A, E As for the original question I always tune highest to lowest. Twice.

I also started doing the same as you and Jack, but it seemed all the pedals I bought used had the velcro the other way around with the (hard) hooks on the bottom and a Pedaltrain PT2 I just bought from the FS was topped the (soft) loop, so I've kinda now gone with the flow. But I agree if you have the soft loop on the bottom of your pedals it doesn't pick up crap, nor scratch surfaces. Makes much better sense However VHS won the day over Betamax. And some folk still don't rate Yamaha BBs...😂

If I'm just tuning up then it's low to high on all the strings, then repeat in full as many times as required to check that the tuning of the other strings hasn't been affected as I've changed the tension. Like others, I seem to remember being told that this was the correct way to do it because of the larger effect that changing the tension on the lower strings will have...but that doesn't make much sense if I'm always going to repeat the process anyway. One caveat, that if I'm doing that on stage, it's not at all unheard of to be half way through and hear the intro to the song start, so quite often I'll only actually get as far as the E or A. If I'm changing strings then it's a free for all - whatever order they untangle themselves from the D'Addario mass of strings. E first and low to high for preference (B coming later on) but quite frequently influenced by having to get whatever string the cat is playing with away from him ASAP.

  34. These threads never work for the reasons mentioned. The same is true of cars - I've recently watched a programme about Aston Martin cars and can see from the quality of materials and how much handmade content, by skilled labour along with the minute volumes produced compared with mass manufacturers all add up to huge price tags. Of course there'll always be people who don't accept the result is worth the money and are perfectly happy with their bog standard Ford Fiesta!! Now on a Bass forum you're also up against that group of people who claim you only need a Squier Precision to do anything you'll ever require in a bass guitar and nothing will persuade such people otherwise (I'd wager most of such owners haven't played anything else) - apparently, according to a recent thread that's all you need to be a crack sessions musician as well......... Of course, such people have overlooked the standard and type of Persian rug required to be stood on for the best studio vibe and sound - or the Motown interface or Alembic or whatever preamp used in combination on many of these recordings with rudimentary instruments. Where does this leave us with the £8k instrument - well with not very many people buying them and a great crowd of other people who can't afford to (usually) and not being able to distinguish absolute mass production from hand made craftsmanship and everything in between. On another subject (but the discussion has verged on capitalism/N Korea) If ever there was a totalitarian (communist) state bass guitar (ie enforced choice) it must surely be the Precision bass according to quite a few recent threads!!

  35. So the OP wants us to tell him why there is a price difference between these basses? No can do. I can't explain your preferences, or what you perceive as good or bad value. These threads are always so pointless because the guys who can't tell the difference between products from the opposite ends of the range don't accept the points made by those who can.

  37. Well it didn't turn up the day it was supposed to. Delivery was rearranged for today, but it turned up yesterday. Glad I was in! First time I've used Andertons and not massively impressed. Still no sign of the reward points that were advertised despite me asking after them twice. Anyway I had half an hour or so messing with the Orange head and 1x15 Wharfedale cab yesterday and it sounded very nice and plenty loud at volume 1. Got practice tomorrow night so I'll be making some noise with it then. It's the first time I've used anything other than a combo so it's hard for me to compare the quality with other setups, but the sound was very smooth and clean. Nice lows but better than that were the higher registers which on my existing cheapo Behringer combo (1x12 with a tweeter) can sound a bit harsh. Looking forward to gigging with it at the weekend!

  39. Keeping it short, there are two things you'll 'need' for doing this. The first is an interface between the instrument and the laptop, the second is a Digital Audio Workstation (abbreviated to 'DAW'...); a programme that'll take what comes through the interface and record it onto your hard disk. Taking the interface first, have a look at this one, to give you some idea; it's a popular one which will do the job very well... Scarlett 2i2 Interface ... Once you've looked at that one, have a look at similar ones and choose one that suits you and your pocket. For a DAW, have a look at this one ... Reaper DAW ... Similarly, when you've read through that, look at others of the same sort and see if you're still inspired. You may have other questions once you've done that, but you'll get answers here. There is an excellent '101' guide in the Recording section of the Forum, here ... The Beginner's Guide to Home Recording ...which is recommended reading. Detail stuff, such as cables for connecting, which connection system (USB, Thunderbolt, other tripe...) will be dealt with as and when the situation calls for it. There, short enough..? Hope this helps.

  41. Mike TOBIAS is a terrific master luthier, crafting instruments in New York chity too and his basses are way much cheaper and way far better than any Fodera. He's got a small crew, just like Fodera. So if you read between the lines, profit is the only added value for Fodera. Christophe LEDUC is working totally alone, has some registered patents for his instruments, has made lots of research for the best ergonomics ever for an instrument, crafts some of the best basses around with carefully chosen woods (he's got a stock of very old woods) and components. His expensiver bass reaches the price of the cheapest Fodera, except for his L series which are really unique instruments only made once. This guy is a true genius, respected and even sometimes worshipped by his fellow luthiers for his extraordinary knowledge. He also taught lutherie in France. This is also the only luthier who is able to craft an instrument where you'll hear the fundamental of each and every note, even the low B, with more harmonics content than any other. And he's a good friend of ours who likes to enjoy life. It's always a pleasure to meet him and his wife and enjoy a meal or just a cup of coffee talking sci-fi, food, wine, philosophy, mathematics, life, art, culture, universe, mankind, ... As I always say, the best Fodera is a Ken Smith.

  42. It’s not a 500 in a 900 case because there are extra air vents along the bottom of the 900 and it has four fans not two They did do some “wide boy” heads which were exactly as thought, basically the combo head in a head sleeve, is suspect it’s that. Very nice, gotta love an Ashdown 👍🏻
