  1. Hi, Not wishing to be contentious but....would you like to add some meat on the bones of that comment? Wouldn't mind knowing if that was meant in jest or actually was meant seriously. Happy to discuss privately or on here. I can quite happily confirm that every piece of kit I've ever reviewed has been reviewed and tested by me either at home, at BGM offices in years gone by or in-store if we're conducting a review day. Having written for the mag for 13 years, every review I've written has been with the gear at my disposal. All the best one and all, Mike

  4. And any I’ve seen have a pretty awful/unique tone... there is a different vibe and sound to acoustic basses beyond just the look. They are great to tinkle on around the house without worrying about amps and stuff. As others have said, for and ensemble playing a small amp is a must. There’s a huge variation in cost and quality in the sound (esp of the pickup) so try before you buy is pretty much a must. Ive got a Faith acoustic bass which I got a great deal on new at £500 and it'sgreat fun in more acoustic settings. For your jam session an electric bass and small amp would, of course, work fine. But if it’s also about the vibe and the look and a less electric tone and you just fancy one then definitely try some out. Then you can make an informed yes or no decision.

  5. I was trying a joke on the fact a bitcrusher isn't meant for very quiet musical contexts or sweet melodies. Nevermind.

  6. @dodge_bass @basexperience great little demo Dodge bass! lofi sounds nice and subtle but deffo adds abit of synthyness to the octave (an Oc2 by any chance) basexperiece ive just started myself and my set up isn't as elaborate as yours (my board and setup is in the pedalboard thread) my core sound is a cog T65 with 3 leaf you're Doom. and Wonderlove! but I've also a cog OD and MXR phase/flange/chorus so in using combos of those pedals! The cog octave with the dirty up is a main sound and i can blend in other FX via its loop. I'm looking at expanding my setup with ring mod/bit crusher and getting an expression pedal next year! I'm also going to try and get another Digitech bass synth wah as they sound great. The keyboard player has absolutely loads of vintage synths and arpegiators as well as a really cool nord! and he really knows how to use them, he also has an original deep impact which I think I'll be borrowing off him were doing some covers of electronic Sci Fi film soundtracks (terminator in 7/4, stranger things theme, John carpenter themes etc) as well as prog rock and fusion (herbie Hancock etc) as well as original material. As ive judt discovered Jojo Mayer and nerve through researching pedals ivecgot really into those sounds! Its all for fun and im finally getting to mess about with my pedals

  7. Watching the Cbeebies panto with the kids and I think the bassist is playing a V7, nice to see an inexpensive bass on a high profile gig.

  8. Thinking of selling this beautiful and awesome bass since I mainly play 4 string and this bass is not being played as often as it should be. It's in brand new immaculate condition. Low action and nicely setup. Balances really well - superb playability. More info on the bass on the following link: http://www.ibanez.com/products/u_eb_detail17.php?year=2017&cat_id=2&series_id=53&data_id=117&color=CL01 Sound samples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW95Dymn62Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2fBYNzjj8Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUK0M8RmO8E I'm based in London. Collection or meet-up preferred but I can also ship since I have the original shipping boxes and packing materials.

  10. After the snow put paid to practice last week I finally got to turn this up tonight, it lives up to its name... it's VERY loud, there's loads of tones in there, can't compare it to the standard abm600 as I've not played through one but I'm not sorry I bought this at all, it's a beast.

  12. A pre-EB Stingray that I picked up for £250 in a shop called Back Street Music in Edinburgh in 1981. The pickup was way out of alignment (no idea how it got through quality control!) but I had it messed about with over the next few years - refinished in white, scratchplate replaced with a little chrome ring round the pickup, Schaller bridge, brass nut. It was far from 'original' but it sang and played like no other bass I'd owned! Foolishly, I sold it when I couldn't make the rent just before Christmas 1985. I still have a copy of the receipt I gave the buyer - Phil Winter of Holdenhurst Avenue, Finchley N12. God knows where he (or the bass) are now, but I'd love to get it back. If anyone sees it, do let me know....

  16. It's a cover of the Stranger Things theme! Although it's mainly the main synth riff that they use mixed in with some other stuff.

  19. My Gibson EB-3 from 1969. Great bass I don't remember the gig or what happened to it. Wow, I had a lot of hair in 69.😁 Blue

  20. Spent some more time with this, I'm really loving this little rig. The cab seems to correct everything I didn't like about the 'tone' (or lack of) of the Big/Super cabs; the subtle eq curve of this speaker is really pleasing and surprisingly (or not given the ampeg vibe) works really well with my distorted lines. I found the other BF cabs I have owned simply too clinical and found they really didn't work well with distortion without heavy EQing. I will be trying this out in rehearsal and looking into whether or not a dual One10 rig would be enough to actually use with Barbikan, but that being said I still don't envisage a gig where a backline/PA isn't provided. The Mesa is really impressive tonally, used with the Darkglass B7KU I find myself with a much more flexible setup than the M900 alone. I really, really like the Voice knob and deep switch. I also don't think I have ever spent so long gazing and admiring a rig!

  21. Look at that neck! Mikkel - I see a lot of nice plants here and there. Do you know - the large-leafed plant in your house - is it Ficus lyrata?

  23. And I thought my gig last night was crap, hope your toe is alright M@23 😕 We just had a venue with a sound limiter, and an indifferent audience who didn't want Christmas songs a week before Christmas. Given the poor pay, I can't see us going back next year.

  24. This is one option I'm considering but can't decide if it looks 'cheap'. The two edges of the body were planed and a hole drilled for where I want the pickup cable to run - sometimes it is easier to do that at this point rather than trying to use a long drill later on in the build (just have to record where the hole is so cavities can be routed in the right place later!!). I then joined the two halves using three clamps to hold the body together and two g-clamps to keep it aligned. Even at this point, I'm quite pleased with how this ash looks. The piece I bought from the tree surgeon is plenty big enough to make another body from and, if anything, the piece I have left is a bit nicer than this. This piece has some kind of 'feature' in it but that will be well out of the way when the body shape is cut.

  27. Should that be BTA400? At £3,249 it makes the Laney Tube 400 look like an absolute bargain at £1399! Great EQ on the Laney too.

  28. Yeah the OC2 is a keeper - but you'll pick one up again easily enough if you want one - they come up pretty regularly for sale. The COG is grea too though because of the filter knob - can really get a great range of sounds going on! As for transcription - well funnily enough I reckon you've got a massive advantage by being able to read / understand notated music already - you just need to accept that working it out is going to be a slow but gradual process - one bar a day kind of thing and just start doing it. It will be SO GOOD for your ears / self development and you confidence as well. Believe me it's worth spending time on - you won't regret it! start now and do some every day for the rest of your life. If you want you can send me your finished transcriptions and I'll check them over - that helped me a lot in the beginning when I was starting out!

  29. Ok, so I'm going to bite in the interest of keeping the Noodle Bar in business... Here's a snippet of something I'm cooking up (not for the BC Composition Challenge as it happens). Precision bass played through an API pre-amp with outboard EQ and compression. Rest is all written in MIDI.

  34. If you're limiting yourself to nano pedals you don't have many options, one of the best out there is the Cog Mini 66. Keep an eye on the FS section, wink wink nudge nudge. FWIW I far prefer pedals with top jacks to nano pedals, as they take up about the same amount of space overall depending on your board layout and other pedals - so that might widen the net a bit!

  37. I wasn't there, but Silverfish were ace. I do remember them having a fair bit of music press coverage at the time, and the slot on Snub (BBC2). Could it have been Transvision Vamp? They had a lot of music press coverage / indie darlings.

  41. Looking good Kev! But she-itt that’s an expensive head!! I’m guessing you have other cabs too, as that’s quite a lot of wattage there for the One10?
    1 point
  42. Sorry, I don't believe that any amp is going to sound any better at 2 ohm than at 4 ohm. Especially through the cabs you're using.
