This one is primarily, but not exclusively, aimed at those of us who are in the mellow autumn of our years. The partner of our vocalist and band leader had a stroke last week. She’s likely to be in hospital for another few weeks and is likely to need lots of support when she gets home. Consequently, and rightly, we’ve cancelled everything band-wise for the rest of the year. Onwards, we’ll have to see how things go. So, while you are able, do that gig, join that band, buy that bass, climb that mountain. Whatever you want to do, while you can. And, prompted by a recent thread, don’t stick around in that dysfunctional band hoping things will improve.24 points

Just in case anybody is interested, I've designed and printed a complete port and flange for my 8" speaker. Its the correct length, 87mm, and is 64mm internal diameter and fits a 68mm hole. It has three M3 screw holes and the actual flange is sized so you can put M3 T-Nuts behind it and so they don't overlap the hole. It has a gasket groove on the back , so you can put 2mm x 10mm foam around the back of the flange, and when you tighten the screws up, it sits flush to the baffle board, but you now have a better seal. Especially useful if you port hole is a bit rough. It has simple text on the front, but I change that easily. I can print them in a variety of colours, but red is very popular at the moment as I still have 27 reels to go through I'll print them for free, I'll include some foam for the gasket, just pay for postage and a appropriate donation to the North West Air Ambulance of whatever you want to pay. I'd prefer it to be more than 1p but I won't check. I can adjust most things quite quickly and easily so if you wanted your name on them, or a different size or whatever just ask. Different colours can be done but only if I have those colours sitting on the shelf. Thanks Rob14 points

Having been on BC for a while now (and also being a bit older and wiser) I don't understand when someone says something is rubbish or someone is rubbish when they / it aren't. You just don't like it. Is Morrisey a rubbish singer, just because I don't like him (as a singer and as a person)? He does what he does and I do quite like some smiths songs Are all P basses rubbish just because they don't work for you. I don't really like super ornate single cut basses where the top bit goes right down the fingerboard but I'm sure they're very good The food in Wetherspoons. Actually I think it's ok for the money, very good value but it's not gormet and that's not expected at that price point your thoughts please8 points

Agreed. I've made a not-altogether-good reputation for myself by walking out of a number of bands over the last 10 years, either because our 'vision' didn't align or because they proved to be just not good enough (IMHO, of course). Some of my current bandmates are surprised at the way I do this, perhaps even think I'm a bit of a loose cannon. Me? I've never lost a moment's sleep about it. I walked away from a very well-paid job four years early, not because I don't like money but because I was well aware that those four years were (at that moment) the best remaining years of my life. The same equation still applies. I'll be 69 next month (no, I can't believe it either) and I have no interest in allowing anyone or anything to waste the best remaining years of my life right now. Use them or lose them.8 points

Fantastic German made Warwick Streamer CV up for grabs. These are Warwick's take on a more traditional bass, using classic woods and passive electronics. This one however has been upgraded with Bartolini B-Axis Pickups and a 2 band Bartolini NTBT pre-amp, with a push/pull passive option. It has also been fitted with a Warwick Brass 'just-a-nut' and a Gotoh drop D detuner. It features luminlay side dots (very handy on dark stages) and comes with the plush Warwick premium gig bag. The bass is in great condition and very lightweight at 3.5kg/7.8lb. Collection from Margate or I can box it up if you'd like to arrange your own courier.7 points

Up for sale is my 2013 Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray Classic 4-string in Vintage Sunburst with a stunning AAA flamed / birdseye maple neck. This is one of the nicest figured Classic necks I’ve seen and the figuring runs all the way up the neck and headstock. Music Man confirmed the spec via their database (see screenshot) I’d conservatively describe as excellent but most people would use mint condition with only home practise use. No gigs, no marks, no issues. It plays beautifully, set up low with no buzz. Comes with some nice extras: Hipshot D-Tuner professionally fitted Original Music Man tuner included in the case Both black and white pickguards Original Music Man hard case Case candy (strap locks, keys etc) Specs 2-EQ Classic preamp Classic mute bridge in perfect working order Chrome hardware Weight: 4.5kg / 9.9 lbs These 2010–2014 Classics are becoming increasingly sought after, especially the ones with premium neck figuring. Prices are rising, and very few clean UK examples come up with this level of figuring. Only selling because I’m downsizing and moving to a Precision for home practice. Price £2,395. Folk are listing these with meh necks, damage and scratches and no extras like Hipshots and extra scratch plates on Reverb for more than this. Dealers would be way above this for a similar example. Open to sensible offers. Bass is located in Central Scotland handy for all major motorway networks, happy to meet within reasonable distance (I have rendezvoused with fellow Basschatters in the North of England before). Happy to discuss shipping with buyer, would prefer to remain within UK at this stage. Feedback I have excellent feedback on Basschat from many years on here, my latest deal being for my 78 Tony Franklin fretless with Beedster the forum legend who was delighted, so buy with confidence. Cheers.5 points

Rehearsed Sunday morning and last night as we're trying to bring a new guitarist up to speed. To be honest I think we shouldn't have rehearsed Sunday and allowed the guitarist to learn more of the material. That aside, they were good rehearsals. We got through a good amount of material. And the sound and mix are so much better now, especially for me. With our previous guitarist, there seemed to be nowhere sonically for me to sit, his volume and tone filled everything. I don't know how he managed it. Now, everything seems to sit so much more comfortably with each other. I've got a tone I'm loving at the moment and it makes playing so much more enjoyable.5 points

The case against Michael Mason was due to be heard at Leicester Crown Court, at 10:30am on 26th November. As the case moved from Leicester Magistrate's Court, to the Crown Court, it now has a additional and new reference (underlined, below, from the court listing below). "10:30am Michael MASON Leic Crown Sitting at Leic Mags Court #15 U20256478 (33JJ0821825)", taken from here https://courtlistings.co.uk/crown-court-listings/leicester#past-section and available for the next 10 days. The case has no status update against it, so I called the court for an update. I was told that the hearing was listed for a plea, and trial preparation; that Mr Mason entered a Not Guilty plea; and that the case has been adjourned until February 2026. I also asked the clerk whether I was permitted to share the above information. Yes - it is all a matter of public record.5 points

For a proper grenade-in-the-portaloo departure, I would suggest the following amendment to 2, assuming that there's a D, E and F (or even G, H , I, J, K, L and M if your band is a ludicrous monster like mine) and that they're not party to the skulduggery: 2: Leave the toxic environment completely, but throw that grenade on the way out - "I am leaving the band. For those of you who don't know, there is a secret plot to bin one of you and there is an audition already arranged for the replacement. That's is appalling. A band should be like a marriage - if it's not working you end it. Not try out a side piece first" D to M will now be wondering which one of them is the backstabbed and who the backstabbee is. I cannot be in a band environment than even has this relatively minor level of toxicity. It saps any level of enjoyment out of it for me. I’d have to find something else.4 points

Rehearsals with two bands in two days. Monday, quite mellow, nearly all new songs, straightforward and went well. No Matter What by Badfinger is a gem of a track. Today, the originals. More arranging and I had my first proper go at three part harmony*. We decided we needed to a brief funky interlude, we jammed and it turned into Funky Town. Also had a random extended blues jam, which was fun. *Actually I was only singing one part.4 points

Around 15 years ago, I did a stupid thing. I sold my 1978 Gibson G-3. In the intervening years, the prices of second hand Gibson G-3s have gone through the roof, beyond where I was willing to go. So, thank you, Epiphone, for issuing this and helping me right a wrong in a more financially palatable way! You can imagine the smile on my face. It is, quite simply, amazing. It is a tastefully modernised G-3 - it frankly speaking feels better put together than my old Gibson G-3. The same oddly twangy but thick at the same time tone is still there, I reckon these pickups are on the level as far as recreations go. I do low level wish they had done clear covers like the 1975-78 G-3s, but these sound as good as I remember the originals sounding. The pickguard? Don't care, mate - the silverburst disguises it as far as I'm concerned. Because Andertons did individual photographs for most of their stock of these, I deliberately picked one where the burst lined up with the bottom edge of the pickguard, giving it context instead of just floating in mid air. I can't wait to take this to band rehearsals this week. Tonight I have mostly been playing songs I played 15 years ago with my first originals band - well, the ones I remember anyway!3 points

This is the switchable 4–12 ohm version of the Barefaced 210S (no tweeter). Silver front, very classic look and a great sounding, very capable cab for its size. I bought this on here around a year and a half ago for £450, but I’ve simply not used it as much as I expected to, so I’m moving it on. Full disclosure: when I bought it, the Tolex on the back was already peeling and taped up. I haven’t needed to touch it since. It’s purely cosmetic and hasn’t affected use at all. Since buying it, I’ve added a Roqsolid cover, which will be included in the sale. Price: £400 I’m happy to try and source a box, but that may take some time. I’d definitely prefer local collection in / around Edinburgh, or a meet-up within a reasonable distance.3 points

My local studio has an original Ashdown King Combo - the ABM900 with an 8x10 cab as an all in one, heavier than the sun, back-breaking monster in a flightcase (ish). Sounds pretty good too.3 points

Memories are not reliable when it comes to sound, but I reckon this new one is in the ballpark - it has that knack of being twangy but thick at the same time. What I can tell you is that this Epiphone feels way better screwed together than my old 1978 Gibson G-3. It just feels less fragile - the pickguard doesn't move/warp ever so slightly when you use the selector switch and the bridge is way sturdier. The neck heel area is much more sculpted and rounded off - the OG G-3 neck heel is basically sharp edged sawn off. Now some of this feeling of sturdiness on the Epi may be unfair as my Gibson G-3 was an alder bodied one instead of maple, so it was definitely lighter. But the old bridge was a slightly better BBOT (in that it had side walls to limit side to side movement) but it used slotted grub screws - by the time I got around to owning it two of them had broken and could only be turned by using pliers. The Badass II is a welcome upgrade, and not unsympathetic - pretty sure a bunch of people fitted Badass bridges to their Grabbers and G-3s back in the day. My only regret so far is that I wish they had gone with clear pickup covers instead of black like the pre '79 G-3 (and my old one) because they look way cool. That's a damn good price for a Gibson G-3 these days. No regrets though - I'd have this Epiphone rather than an OG Gibson any day of the week for the reasons I have outlined above.3 points

I've been sacked once and replaced once I knew I was getting sacked (18 years ago now) because the bassist wasn't speaking to me at gigs. We had a rehearsal that turned into a band meeting in the pub (bass player didn't come, he was on holiday, the spinless w@n***) To be honest, I wanted to leave because I thought the bass player was a tw@t anyway and I'm still mates with the other guys. It was a great band, originals, good following, punters always singing along to the originals. I'm ok with it Now as for being replaced............ Underhand at best by the band leader and the singer We needed a new drummer, so the singer gets the drummer from another band he's in Great, I thought but the drummer wanted to bring his bass player with him If the band leader had been honest with me I could have booked other gigs to fill my diary. But he wasn't. He told me after they'd done some low key gigs (which I was asked about by mates, 'how did it go the other night at X?' I've actually met the replacement, by chance, very recently. Nice chap, great player and he apologised, he knew nothing about it. I don't want anything to do with underhand stuff, we're human beings and can be quite sensitive at times Be honest and be fair I would walk on this occasion as I won't be part of this kind of thing3 points

I've been B (nothing wrong with my playing, C was a friend of A and D who were brothers and ran the band and he decided he wanted to be in the band). E and F weren't happy with the way it was done (they told me there were no rehearsals for a few weeks - there were, but not with me). Eventually F told me. It wasn't very nice. Eventually it was water under the bridge and a few years later I depped for them, but a while later they asked me to rejoin and I turned them down - largely because they'd turned out to be a load of racist bastards.3 points

Had my last rehearsal with The Spacewasters before I leave the band last night. We have a gig on Friday which will be my last gig so was a quick run through the set to establish anything we needed to work on. Answer was no, as all sounded great. A bittersweet evening for me, I have to leave as gigging just knackers me in so much now, but the band sounded so good and I really enjoyed it. Still, plenty with far more to moan about than this so won’t complain.3 points

Quick shoutout for Ashley & the peeps at Bass Direct! Had a problem with the lining to a Mono Vertigo I bought 18 mths ago. Not only agreed a replacement after I sent a few photos but sent me a replacement BEFORE expecting the return so I wouldn’t be without it! Great service 👏👏. Much thanks…3 points

Rare immaculate bass. Optical pickup system gives better sustain and less noise as no magnetic pickups (good for studio). Check out Willcox Guitars website and youtube review video by the Bass Whisperer. This bass has a rechargeable battery which lasts well, + charger. Wide range of sounds from clever pickup and preamp system. Quality materials US made. Lighter than a lot of basses as the body is semi hollow. These normally sell for £600+ Includes cover and manuals. No dings! Reason for sale-it’s not getting enough use for such a lovely instrument. PREFER COLLECTION. But can post carefully packed at buyers risk and cost.3 points

I fancy having a go with a monitor style cab with the back corners at 45 degrees. I’d make the cab a bit wider and deeper to keep the same internal volume and match the form factor of a 10” cab I have2 points

Ive had the B2-Four 3 times now. It's really nice, and the only reason I dont have one now is it started very quickly to be a distraction, always tweaking things etc. Also I got turned on to IR's and these work better for me than the Zoom stuff at home. Ive still got a MB-60 and B1-Four, but never use them. I did have the B3n years ago. Ive also had the MB-60+ twice, but got rid of them for the same reasons above. One thing I can say about the newer versions are they do sound better. A bit cleaner and more open than the old ones. The different DI Outs on the B2-Four actually make a difference, and I found I was just that feature for a bit. Ultimately I find all these boxes seem to have a bit of sparkle missing when I use headphones, but not so much when using an amp. Im an iOS user but have never bothered with the app, other than a customary look when I got the first B2-Four. Im more a hands on guy, and I feel I need to know what's what with my gear in case im at a gig or can't use the app to make adjustments. I found the B2-Four really simple to use one I figured out what does what and where to find things. I like the extra foot switches on the B2-Four, I think they make for a more versatile pedal, especially live once you get the hang of them.2 points

Interesting, I think Coldplay are excellent, but I don't like them, Prince is a musical and songwriting genius but I find difficult to listen to and Precision basses are the best basses ever made but I prefer and play Jazz basses 🤣2 points

There's always a nuance to this. A singer may, indeed, be a technically awful singer, but they perform material that is popular. There are performers whom I wouldn't want to see, but a bloke with a 40 year career is clearly doing something right. Even a poor technique needn't be a barrier to greatness or popularity. The folk who play instruments around their knees are displaying poor technique, but seem perfectly capable of becoming legends. It's all very subjective. After all, if it was down to sheer ability, I'd be a musical god, but somehow I'm not! 🙂2 points

I have pouches (think they’re neotech) on my straps which were originally intended to hold the packs from my Line6 G30 - and they still do - but now also work for ‘bug’ style systems by just extending the transmitter with a patch. I’ve got some that I made with inline sockets and also just some inline jack-to-jack connectors which are arguably just as good if not better. All you see is the patch coming out of the pouch on the strap - can be any system you like in there.2 points
