Anyone visiting Bass Direct is a serious potential buyer. I would like to bet that they get almost no casual 'walk-ins'. I've spent time at the retail 'coal face' and have to agree with mrtcat (and therefore disagree with FDC484950) that if they want a long term future they should/must pay attention to making the customer feel good about the purchase. I travel on Ryanair by necessity not choice - even Michael O'Leary, about whom it has been said that he is capable of starting an argument even when in a room on his own, has realised that a business has to give the customer the 'warm fuzzies' as my kiwi mate calls it. I am not saying that Bass Direct is as bad as Ryanair btw - far from it, but they need to up their game in that department3 points

Because I'm swaying more to playing 5 string instead of 4 I thought I'd convert my '72 ish P bass onto a 5 string I have seen people doing this but keeping the 4 string neck and changing the nut and bridge, but to be honest I don't think I would be able to get on with the tight string spacing so I think I will get a 5 string neck and rout out the neck pocket and change it that way I'm still not 100% sure whether it's going to be a Tele or a Precision I'm leaning more toward a Tele but that could change? But here's the donor bass2 points

This is 27 years old but has recently been completely refurbished/refinished and refretted, consequently it’s in mint condition. The refinish was done by Sims guitars in Kent, they’ve done a truly fantastic job. It features a thuya root face and back with an ash core. The neck is wenge and maple with a 24 fret ebony fretboard which has a very thin band of lighter wood purfling running along the edge. It’s 34” scale length with twin Kent Armstrong humbucking pickups and a Bartolini preamp. The bass is amazingly easy and comfortable to play, and very lightweight. The string spacing is about 18mm at the bridge. I would prefer collection from Birmingham, or I can deliver for train fare. The instrument comes with a Hiscox case. Trades welcome for cheaper 6 string basses plus cash my way. I particularly like the headless thing, so maybe Status?2 points -
SOLD - Thanks for all the interest! Hello all, I've decided to put my fretless up for sale. It's an Adamovic Jupiter 4, fretless, made by Nikola Adamovic in Holland. This is an amazing instrument but it's leaving the family to free up some room for a 6 string fretless. A quick run down of the specs below: 4 string 34" scale Flamed redwood top and headstock cap Limba body Spalted maple lined freboard and nut Flamed maple and purpleheart neck Glockenklang 3 band preamp, knobs are volume, pickup pan (there are two pickups under the ramp), treble, bass and mid. I can't remember what all the little switches do, one is a killswitch, I think the other changes mid-freqs adjusted by the mid knob and the other is a phase knob but I'm not 100% certain. Overall the bass is in great condition, it has a few marks in the finish from aging that I've tried to capture in the photos but it has been looked after by the previous owners and there are no big chips or dings in the finish. The fretboard is in great condition, the action is nice and low as I had it set up by Curvy Sounds in Newcastle not long after I bought it. The preamp is nice and flexible, I'd say it leans towards the classic fretless sound more than the modern super bright fretless sound. It's fat and warm but the mids can be boosted for more attack or for playing "Portrait of Tracey" on repeat. Every time I play it I think it's an amazing bass but I yearn for 6 strings, if this bass was a 5 or 6 I'd keep it until the grave but alas, it's a 4 so it's disposable to me. Despite it's appearance the bass is very small and incredibly light.My bathroom scales think it's 2.3kb / 5lbs and I'd say that's about right. It's a featherweight but it's incredibly resonant and loud when not plugged in, it balances perfectly on a strap, as should be expected as Nikola's philosophy when making his designs was "ergonomics first". I had a look on his website and with his 2018 price list and this would have cost in excess of 4500 euros to be built today. With regards to payment I can do Paypal or cash on collection. I can drive to meet or deliver as long as it's not too far from Newcastle. I travel for work and spend a lot of time around Europe so I'll do my best to answer any questions asap. I'm happy to PM my number to discuss the bass on the phone provided I'm not working outside of Europe zone 1. THe bass will be shipped in a hard case, shipping would be £30 within the UK. Today I screwed up again, nothing major but a silly mistake, I forgot to rout the neck binding rebate before radiusing ah well have to do it another way tomorrow, still not the end of the world just a waste of time So as you may have guessed I radiused the Ebano fretboard, first though I shaped the neck using a jig that fits into the truss rod slot, then in my hurry to radius the fretboard I did that and then shaped it instead of shaping, routing then radiusing. After all that i glued in the Mother of Pearl and sanded them down to 320 grit for now until I fir the binding and clean it up then I can sand down to 3000 grit and see how we look after that; any finer and I'm off shopping again! The inlays were a good fit, I needed to press them in using a vice (linoleum jaw linings) but the fit was good, just that tiny nick to fill, I'm very pleased with that job, lets see how I get on with the headstock inlays hopefully next week. The inlays for the other neck arrived today, so I will get them sorted tomorrow with luck.2 points

Just came across this and was very surprised and saddened to hear of your experience with us. Was it me personally you were dealing with? I can't recall this exchange you're referring to, although that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I do try to help all my customers with any questions or service needs they may have with our products in a very timely manner. In the case of your 6" midrange driver, there have been other customers with the same question or curiosity as to whether or not it was working due to the fact that the high frequency content of a bass guitar is very low in output relative to the lower frequencies. My response for testing this was to play full- range, pre-recorded music thru the speaker to see if the output was consistent with the recording. In all cases, it eliminated any concerns the customer had regarding the 6" driver. I do take great pride in our customer support and service, and expect no less from our dealers. This, of course, doesn't excuse any poor communication on my part, and I am very sorry if it was me personally you were corresponding with. Best Regards, Jim Bergantino2 points

Will happily consult on the design of a bass wah... I have already thought of the silly name for it. Perhaps a picture of a pig wearing a beret with a string of onions round it's neck would go well on the design? An auto-wah version could be a "pork wah? Sausage machine" Why aren't I in marketing?! Yeah but its not a Jazz Bass in the true sense. When was the last time you saw a Fender Jazz with a Stingray pickup in that position.? How is it going to sound like a P Bass (under that pickup cover) in that position anyway.? Im just saying for Fender its a bit Leftfield. There are only so many things you can do with an Electric Bass, radically new bass design is just a pipe dream when it comes to an instrument like the bass, its all been done imo. The last radical design on the bass was a Dingwall. but since then its just minor tweaks.. I do wonder if on some Piano forum there are people moaning because makers aren't doing something radically different or groundbreaking with the piano.. ?2 points

They know and recognise me as someone who has spent a lot in there over the years, probably £5k to date and I've also sold stuff to staff. It was reasonably busy but it's not a customer's job to convince a shop and it's staff that they're worthy of being welcome. Everyone is a potential customer when you are running a business whether they spend today, tomorrow or years down the line. If they're having a bad day then they need to be professional and suck it up a bit like the rest of us in our professional lives.2 points

May be a little late to the party on these, but I bought a set last week (45-100), and fitted them to my US Geddy Lee Jazz. Wow! They are really excellent. I used to use the standard XL strings for some years, but the last few, I've been using Fender flats. Tried some Fender nickels on the bass, and they just didn't cut it. Did some research.....looked at DR....lots of various materials/compounds, but stumbled across the NYXL's. Fitted them last week, and the bass was transformed. It was great before, but these have made it take off - love the tension, feel, balance, can't fault them at all. They feel really nice of the fingers, quite soft - I'm assuming they'll be kind to the frets as well, feeling like they do! Not the cheapest, but if anyone is considering a set, give them a try. Definitely feel a league above the 'standard' XL....and the packaging is awesome as well! Well done D'addario. You've won me back! 😁1 point

When I saw the title of this thread I wondered if it was a new phenomenon. Courier Con, like ComicCon, or a convention trade show.. Couriers meet to swap, buy and sell dented van doors. Have competitions to see who can rev the most amount of black smoke out of their engines. Then see who has the noisiest door slam or who can shout the longest meaningless abuse at passing motorists in a single breath. Prizes for who can throw a parcel the farthest without looking and best excuse for not actually showing up at an address.1 point

Tried these out today and managed to compare the Jazz with the Mexican standard. All were nicely finished and the new pickups did sound nicer to my ears. Satin finish on the neck did feel somewhat different though.1 point
