  1. One of the bands I've played with for a number of years only plays about that many gigs , advert seems reasonable for me , ideal for a busy person who gigs for fun and can't commit to a full on musical project

  2. I have just spent some time catching up on a very moving thread, not too big to admit I even had a little cry. It makes me think of how this community has developed over the years, how it has grown, thrived and become the great place it is today. Made by the people that visit it. This in turn makes me think of some of the great members we have lost, snatched by time, illness or other causes. This forum will remain a place where you are remembered, some by many, some by few but you will be remembered. A salute to those we have lost, you remain in our hearts always!

  5. For sale is my ACG J-Type 5-string, No. 0078. I bought it on here last year, and it's a beautiful thing - the only reason I'm parting company with it is I just use my other basses more, and this deserves to be played and enjoyed! All the original specs are still on Alan's website here - http://archive.acguitars.co.uk/portfolio/0078-j-type-5-string/ It's in really excellent condition. For the purposes of full disclosure, the only marks I can find are a couple of small scratches on the back near the control cavity cover, and two tiny marks on the fingerboard between the 2nd and 3rd fret, which you can't feel, and can barely see. These all pre-date my ownership. I replaced the original EQ01 filter preamp with an East Uni-Pre. The bass balances beautifully, and has great resonance and sustain, along with a huge tonal range from the pickups and preamp. UK shipping is included in the price, as is a Stagg lined hard case to ship it in if required. You're welcome to come and try before you buy - I'm just off the A3 near Woking in Surrey. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades. NOW SOLD.

  6. I dont know about that. There's a lot wrong with The Guardian, but at least it's not pushing a rabid swivel-eyed Brexit agenda and a return to Victorian no-welfare serfdom, as favoured by certain right wing tax-evading billionaire newspaper owners...

  7. I think you've pointed out and maybe made me realise I have a problem! Overwhelmed by GAS!! - The mini board did exist for a short while. But it's demise I blame on my local music shop offering Helix LT for interest free credit. Mini board has since been consigned to the To Do list and I haven't used it since. But so far, LT hasn't had a fair share of really being used yet either. Two projects never happened and really it's overkill for my function band.. hmmm... or maybe it isn't, I just need to spend more time with it ha ha!! My mind wanders and thinks, "well instead of a big board and a little board why don't I just settle on one medium sized board instead?" - Which could have been the B3n, Boss MS or of course now HXFX. Deciding between each as there's at least one pedal I will always keep at the start of my chain. Maybe this isn't a post for the effects forum, but I suspect that my inability to be happy with my gear is due to the short lived fix of new toys... I have zero problems with basses. My Go To bass is spot on. Pedals? oh dear me!

  8. Actually to be fair when I left school in the 70s I was able to get a job that paid enough for me to live independently. I think that would be next to impossible today and I'd probably end up dead in a ditch within a week. It's heartbreaking that young people now have to live with their parents for years on end because they cant afford to move out. It prevents them from becoming true adults, imho. I think that may be part of the problem.

  9. Just form a slight listen that last clip shows the mids/high end that I`m after. I`ll have a proper listen later on, but this really seems like it will be the all-in-one pedal that I`ve been waiting for. Drat, more expense

  11. For the DIYers among us, Julian Pohler (Mr. Shalltechnik04 - the guy behind the Guma Drive, Guma Antique and Growling Krizzly kits) is bringing out a combined HPF/LPF + DI kit soon called "Vong" (no idea what Vong means). I've asked him to keep me posted on when it's to be released.

  12. All fender body shapes. Boring, unimaginative and definitely unattractive! Add to that most single cuts but I like the Les Paul shape. Oh and the Warwick basses with the dildo top horn!

  15. I don't like natural finishes or sunbursts, slab body basses, body-binding, headless, single cuts, non-cloverleaf machine-heads, anything with more than five strings, things that look like coffee tables. Basically this :

  16. Thanks for the nice feedback! The monthly composition challenge typically receives a woeful number of votes in comparison to the usual threads about P-bass colours, string choices, cats and what have you... so we're grateful for every crumb of support we can muster. Cheers

  17. As a man of a certain age, I'll always have a soft spot for the 1980s SB range and also the Integra models that Billy Gould used on The Real Thing. I've got an old Japanese (1978) Primary P-bass; granted it's really just the body and neck that remain original (everything else was shot), but it's a very robust well made bass.

  19. Hi all, done a few transcriptions over the last couple of years so thought I'd start sharing them with you all here, before I get my own website up and running. I'll be doing some playalongs of some of these tracks in the not too distant future also. Hope they are of some use to you. Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic are also done, just proof-reading and layout to do, so expect them soon! Cheers https://drive.google.com/open?id=17WeLSNw4fCnT6vLav75e0Nr0f0iXx6IB

  20. This is my all original 1966 Fender Jazz bass. Purchased from the US a few years ago, I have decided to mover her on. She is all original and as far as I can tell down to the last screw. The finish is clean and bright and the bass has that big bold 66 funky tone. She has a slight buzz on the 15th fret on the G which I could sort out with a bit of fret work but never felt the need as I use her as a funk bass. She has a few nicks in the body but nothing major - I have posted pictures to show but she is very clean all over. This bass was an under the bed find and the case smells a little of that but It's not nasty and I don't want to put anything in the case that might affect the finish over time. I'm open to sensible offers and will ship overseas - bear in mind this has a rosewood fret board and does not have a CITIES certificate.

  25. Good enough for what? I'm good enough to play in the band I play in and the band gets gigs. I'm not good enough to turn up to any gig situation anywhere and be able to handle it without breaking a sweat.

  30. The problem is Pete, that I only have time to concentrate one one. I work away from home all week, I lose about 60 to 100 quid getting home for Tuesday night rehearsals. That said I think the best option is clear. I'm going to quit the band after rehearsal tonight and work on the new project. Now I need to learn how to promote a band and get gigs instead of the random short notice bookings I grab at the moment.

  31. Nice to see you made the effort mate Don't get me wrong, the 4003 ain't my favourite bass (that accolade belongs to my sadly departed Status Streamline - must get another one at some point) I just think it's more quirky than crap.

  33. I saw a video on youtube where Annie (St Vincent) mentioned it I am sure. Something about being in the studio with Pino and he either played her guitar and he liked it and thought a bass would be good, or he tried a prototype and thought it was good......I cant remember and I am probably paraphrasing, but she mentioned bass and Pino and that's all that matters.

  34. I can't get over how good it is, it's a really nice bass, so much so that I currently overlook all of my other basses in favour of this one. I've got a few things incoming to tart it up a bit - Fender P-bass ashtrays and tug-bar, a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 Vintage (to replace the active SD ABP-1 that the previous owner fitted) and vintage strap buttons so I can attach one to the back of the headstock! I was considering changing out the pots, cap, etc but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the stock components (250k pots, 0.1uF cap) so have decided to leave them alone. Obviously 'pics or it didn't happen' so I'll post once it's all done and dusted.

  37. You shouldn't be able to hear what a HPF is doing. The cut-off point should be set below the range of normal hearing and just filtering out those frequencies that are causing excessive cone movement but aren't actually producing any audible bass.

  39. One of my few highly developed skills is spitting. I have become adept at landing hefty oysters of gob on screens rudely jutted into the offing between me and an artist I am trying to watch. It is hilarious because their initial reaction is to drop the now contaminated device but then this odd dance ensues passing the device from hand to hand trying to wave my noxious ejecta away.

  40. When people say tried and tested Stingray do they mean the slab three-bolt, the contiured four-bolt, the contoured six-bolt 2eq, the contoured six-bolt 3eq or the slab six-bolt 2eq? The Stingray has been continually improved since it was released, not one of them has been a let down. These are smart refinements by a company who don’t usually get it wrong, why such groundless negativity when none of us have even played one yet? Silly.

  41. Aidanb: it’s loud for its size, I think that’s the point of these. It’s the only Barefaced cab I’ve tried though. I’m not in touch with what a typical covers band requires, I can’t advise on that, sorry.

  43. I was in MI retail for 25 years. It's a difficult one, and it hinges on the ease of saleability of the part ex'd item, the realistic used value of that item, and the available profit margin in the item being purchased. Whatever anyone may think, margins are not great in MI retail...especially for high-ticket items, so if you've negotiated a good price on the new item, you're going to struggle to get a good part ex value. Also, people usually over-estimate the value of their own goods and under-estimate the value of what they'd like to buy - it's just human nature. The person who buys your part ex'd item will not expect to pay the 'ticket' price, so that has to be factored in, as does the fact that it may not sell for 6 months. Used stingrays seem to command a price of around £1000 in a shop (more like £800 privately) unless they're particularly old or special. In my experience, it being a limited version doesn't, in itself, affect the figures very much...I wish it did! I'll stick my neck out and say I think you'd be offered between £500 - £700 depending on the fair-mindedness of the dealer.

  44. If you can get it at that price it’s the bargain of the century. I have one I bought off a mate to mess about on and it’s great, better strings as mentioned would be worth investing but I paid £300 on mine and thought that was a really good price. Sadly I think anyone who orders one will get an email saying it’s a mistake shortly after, but if don’t try you don’t get.
