Following the demise of The Terrortones, I'm now playing bass for In Isolation. Here's our new video for the song "TRAPPIST-1"2 points

I just have got one for this kind of money (thanks Mrs Painy for the early Christmas present)! No one home to take delivery tomorrow though so it's being delivered Saturday morning. Edit: Just £399 including fitted hardcase and next day delivery for a USA built Gibson in case you're wondering!2 points

Well guys....you were just RIGHT !! Arrived this morning...beautiful neck , lite , very very punchy and a nice and tight low B. Will sure change the knob configuration in a V/V/T ..;I like to mix the 2 pick up and choosing the balance. Capacitor and tone will also be changed..;but this are really minor adjustement to my taste and habits. Considering how much I've paid for it it's a nice bargain. The neck feels just fine and the pups sounds really good rich and powerful.2 points

I often run a Barefaced 410 with a 100 watt Ampeg V4B. This cab loves tube valve amps and tonally it is a match made in heaven. Certainly well worth the search if you can find a second hand one. Alternatively you could remind Alex that it is the festive season and a time of good will to all......1 point

@Cuzzie Please could you post the link to that thread? I've got some mucking about ahead and would like to try some different options. I've got a Dean Rhapsody 12, I picked it up for <£400 about two years ago. Quality is way beyond expectation and it just doesn't go out of tune, it's very stable. It's the only bass I have that I haven't fettled in some way, the fret job is great. From my experiences of an 8-string it was trying one that was the deciding factor in me getting a 12. Jeff also uses an 8 a lot (I've seen him play one live on RVM, Go and I think State over the years). Based on my Dean I think that with the width of a 12-string board and the area that the strings cover I could around an 8-string quicker so for trickier lines where more dexterity is needed it would be more like a 4. I have to say that when I swap from the 12 to a standard 4 mid-gig it's like putting down a rocket launcher and picking up a rifle.1 point

Think you are right enough. Sure i read that somewhere. Damien also an incredible player. Sandin sent me quite a few FOH desk recordings of various gigs but he asked me not to share as he didn't want into any trouble with his bosses LOL Dave1 point

After follwing the Jaco V Marcus debate i thought i'd post this guy. Plays with Gino Vannelli but this is his sol album from a few years ago. Genuinely very nice guy that i corresponded with when looking for his album. He sent me loads of freebies including unreleased recording of both himself and Gino. His mate is Jimmy Haslip. I like the way he includes fantastic bass playing with some great songs. This is more the kind of bass i prefer where its not just the bass playing that's the focus. Added 2-3 songs to let you hear the different styles he uses. What do you think. ?1 point

Agreed - I was just responding to the sounding like geddy thing. He doesn't, but he sings it well and as a cover version it is excellent. Because as a teenage rush fan who can play guitars and drums, there is no way you have any friends to play along with1 point

What about an actual aclassical guitar bass? http://www.stollguitars.de/en/portfolio/classic-bass-nylon-strings-75-cm-scale-length/ Personally, I use a custom acoustic bass, 4 string, 34” scale, made by Brook. I can play a couple of Bach pieces on it, but my experience with it tells that if ordering a guitar purely for classical and finger style stuff, I would go with a cutaway, and 5 Strings E to C, so that I have that extra string for melodies. Id go with Lozz's Ashdown 410. Im not a fan of Barefaced (never tried their 410 however) for the 'warm vintage' tone, I find the ones ive tried (a single 12" effort a few years ago, a 2x12 one around a year ago and more recently their 2x10 horizontal effort) always seem to have a nasally/honkey mid and an ice picky treble. I always find my Ampeg 410he provides bags of warmth and vintage thump with my v4BH 100w valve amp1 point

This is what I would be lusting for in the 4x10 space! Handles 1200W AES and is same weight as the BF. Would need to be in used territory to get within budget, although there was one in the FS just a few weeks ago (which got snapped up) listed at £700. I have the 210. It's a great cab and I would say VK are a little 'warmer' than BF in sound which could also fit in with what you're looking for?1 point

U2 - Achtung Baby (the sanctimonius Irish rocking tax avoiders at their best) Queen - A Night at the Opera (with one of the most beautiful love songs plus perhaps the most admired single of all time?) Beatles - Please Please Me (the album that was the start of changing everything in rock and pop music) If the Stone Roses had done their two albums as a double album, that would have made my 'current' list for sure and I just couldn't choose between the various Led Zepplin masterpieces!1 point

I’d personally go E-C. I’ve done a lot of arranging and playing of classical pieces. This would fit the range better I think for most pieces. before you start working on a piece, i.e actually playing it. Sit down with a pencil and paper, and map out the best way to approach the piece, fingering and actually where to fret the notes etc.1 point

My initial thoughts were the ABM410, but it can be a bit weighty - great cab though. The Fender Rumble 410 is a nice sounding cab, and quite light/portable. Lastly, and a shameless plug here, I`m selling an Ashdown RM 414 (a 4ohm 410) that has had the cones swapped to Eminence Betas by Ashdown, it`s now rated at 1000 watts at 4ohms. Nice and light, comes with a Roqsolid cover and go-faster wheels, advertised on here at present for £295.1 point

I seem to recall it's slightly closer to the neck when measured from the bridge. I'll check tonight...1 point

At the risk of being controversial, you say your first run through sounded brilliant, so why would you want to change it to make a more slavishly accurate copy? Part of what may have made it sound so great was you as a band feeling it and enjoying it. I'd stick with your own take on it.1 point

Chances are there's an open coil in one driver, but those four may be series wired, so when one won't pass signal they all stop. You'll need to pull and test the top four drivers to be sure.1 point

Franz Schubert was thirty-two when he died, having completed seven symphonies, over six hundred songs and a whole bunch of other major works. I'll admit to not having listened to it all, but of what I have, there's not much dross in there. Most of his stuff is still being played by top musicians to this day, and is unlikely to fade away. Just sayin'.1 point

As has been said previously, there's nothing nonsense about Jaco's playing, no accidents etc. Of course, towards the end of his life he fell apart and very much relied on his past to prop up his artistry to some degree, but he was ill. And suggesting that Jameson (whom I love a great deal) had some kind of rhythmic mastery over and above Jaco is just silly, they applied it in very different ways, but Jaco was an equal rhythm powerhouse, incredible drummer too (that's him drumming on Teen Town). It also seems that you're judging his playing on how you think the bass SHOULD be, whereas actually it's simply another instrument that allows the player to express themselves, its role has simply been dictated by western musical styles. He wrote the music, and so why wouldn't he step out and fulfil what he feels he needs to play, he's not doing it for anyone else other than him, whereas Jameson was on a wage, playing through songs that were just put in front of him on the music stand.....who knows what he would have done given full creative freedom. If you haven't already, listen to Jaco play through his Big Band albums, perhaps much more your thing, because it's a large band and he understands placement within a larger context. Weather Report was a much smaller band, and so more ability to step out, fill space (where appropriate) and have fun. But just to further the conversation, I do love leaving this video hanging around :): Just to be clear, i'm not saying that everyone should like Jaco, obviously not.....but appreciate him for what he was in total, not simply that he played music you don't like.
