Played my first Wilcock over 2 years ago and finally placed an order last year. Arrived today. Its awesome! Only had a short noodle on it but its sounds killer, love the 'bridge' pickup, getting used the mudbucker, but overall it plays great and its PINK!15 points

I bought this Bass a few months ago from a guy who builds his own guitars. I have had it set up and serviced by our guitarist. The Bass plays really well sounds great and will hold its tuning perfectly. However, I bought it on a whim as I play in a Glam Rock Band and thought it would look great on stage, photo's etc. But the truth is I can't drag myself away from my P Basses. There are a couple of little dinks on it, hardly noticeable and do not affect the playability. Cash on collection only please. Thanks for looking. John12 points -

Me too, I spent many hours learning the four original songs a band in Bournemouth (40 miles away) sent me, did well at the audition but lost out to a bloke they already knew who lived down the road from them, saying that I lived too far away. Actually that was no problem for me as I joined another band a few weeks later (also 40 miles away!) and I was able to book the originals guys to play at a local festival I help run cos I really liked their music. Win-win all round?6 points

Yes it did, they had gigs lined up and a reasonable bunch of songs. I didn’t like the whole setlist, but then I have never played in a band where I liked everything on the list - the majority was good though. If nothing else, I am finding doing things like this is increasing my confidence with playing with new people, and learning different songs6 points

Following @markbunney's posts about his recent audition in the brilliant 'worst auditionee' thread, I thought I would start a thread about forthcoming auditions...because I have an audition tonight! This is for a Soul/Motown band, which is a little out of my comfort zone. I'm used to playing rock, indie and punk and I've had to change my playing style and my sound to suit the band's setlist. Learning the songs has been thoroughly enjoyable though, they have a cracking setlist! I'll let you know how I get on.5 points

It was a bit of an impulse buy (hard to believe on Basschat) but as I turned 51 on Monday and the cat turned a far more impressive 17, I decided to invest in the Blackstar U700 head to go with the matching Blackstar Elite cab that I have. A quick road test in the kitchen and my bass tone brings all the felines to the yard! Sounds as sweet as it looks and I was quite taken with the bag it comes in too. Big shout out to Andertons who never hang about sending these things too!5 points

I have a 2023 Afterburner 1 5 string in Matte Vintage White I’ve decided to sell. Only for the fact that one of my dream basses has appeared (another Status Graphite bass). I bought it in December from a shop in the UK. Specs attached in the image also. Colour in person is not quite as “stormtrooper” as shown. The image from my kitchen shows with standard lighting. Bit more vintaged funnily enough. 😊 bass sounds as awesome as you’d expect. I’m in Aberdeen, Scotland and can ship. I’m not hugely keen on sending outwith the UK but open to discussion as the fees could be mental and I’ll only ship with it fully insured. Would be looking at £4,000 plus shipping.5 points -
Sale only and a very reduced price for a nice old Fender. The bass is a 1980/81 Fender Precision Special. They weren’t made for long and are quite rare. This one is in Lake Placid Blue and has all the original brass and gold plated hardware. I even found the thumb rest that is made from solid brass hiding in a box when I moved house recently. Pickup is the original Fender and I had one side recently repaired by Aaron Armstrong. You will notice that the bass is wired passively. I still have the active circuit and extra brass knob but the circuit will need attention as it wasn’t working at all when I bought this back (I’ve owned this bass twice). It still sounds great as a passive bass however. The scratchplate is original and the extra holes have been plugged with removable plastic caps. I believe a non-original LED may have been fitted at some point as there is an extra plugged hole. It has dings aplenty as it has been gigged a lot over its 40+ years. Frets are in good order as is the trussrod. Action is nice and low and it is currently wearing Dean Markley Blue Steel heavy gauge strings. It’s got some tone to it and it’s a heavy bass at around 4.8kgs. The brass parts are heavy and when I was gigging it I had it fitted with lightweight tuners and a spiral bridge to cut down the weight. That said it’s a lot less than some 70’s Precisions I’ve played. The original Fender case is included. I’m afraid I won’t ship outside the UK. Any questions please ask.4 points -
Yep. The total thickness of the top is 16mm. The dome will be 12mm. So dividing 12 mm by 9 templates, means each template will be used to only take off 1.3mm. Archtop guitars I think have a much bigger dome - 16-18mm, but my complete finger-in-the-air guess is that that's too much for a bass. I've never done this before though, so it will be a voyage of discovery for all of us!4 points

Phew! I'm running as my 7 year old is due back from dance class in 14 minutes at which point she purloins the laptop😟 I've tried explaining to her that Basschat is WAAYYYY cooler than The Worst Witch, but her powers of negotiation a lightyears beyond mine🙄 So, I've started work on the top. My design is largely based on Benedetto's published shapes. I've stretched and squeezed it somewhat to fit my needs, but that was it's origin. I want to rout contours into the top to help with the carving. I'm not good enough to do freehand carving so I want as much help as possible. So....the incredible, the wonderful, the extraordinarily good looking @Wookiebass did some CAD jiggery to do a contour map for me. I've added a few more contours to it so it looks like this: I then cut out each of the contours and stuck them to 4mm MDF, cut them out and sanded them to shape. I now have a stack of contour templates, ready for the real fun to start! Or maybe I'll just stick a bridge onto the top of that and call it done. 🙂4 points

Slightly out of sequence, as I did the radius before the marker dots. Radiusing I use this jig from G&W. It seems solid enough but I'm getting a few ridges so there's some slop somewhere. I'm now in the process of finishing the radius by hand. At the moment it's got 120 grit on. I'll got to 400 on the sanding beam, then probably do to 1000 with sanding sponges. The orange sanding block is probably my greatest innovation in guitar making🤣 It works brilliantly. I think I may have mentioned ebony being non-cooperative. It particularly doesn't want to have a radius sanded into it. This is going to take a while.....4 points

Oh my God. That's just awful. I bought and sold basses with Nick on many occasions (we used to vie for the most embarrassingly long feedback threads on BC) and he was just such a nice, easygoing guy. He plainly adored his wife Alice (and their dogs) and I believe their favourite piece of music was "Alice in wonderland" by Bill Evans Trio. Leaving that here, thanks for the memories mate. Here I bring you a fabulous handmade and Custom made bass in its woods. More beautiful in nature and the incredible sound it transmits. I decide to sell it because I have many and I am more of a 4-stringer. As you can see in the photos, the woods used are of the best and details of nakar and avalòn marquetry on its ebony fingerboard. The neck assembled with 9 layers of central purpleheard wood ect…In short, a unique bass madness. Flycase included I give priority to doing it by hand I hope it comes out soon before I regret it. I find the same with auditions (not that I've had many) and depping. If you approach with that attitude it can also help take some of the stress and pressure away from the experience.4 points

Just announced by his wife on Facebook: "Our Nick. Last night Nick's cancer finally took him away from us. He fought and endured so much from the inital diagnosis 11 years ago, to the second then third reoccurrence. Our fighter until the end. Tenacious, stubborn, fiercely loyal and a complete Dr Dolittle. It's a surprise there are only 3 dogs in the house such was his love of animals. The compromise, a constant stream of bass guitars, "but this one makes the sound I need" only to leave the house a short time later! And latterly his love of Star Wars specifically the franchise Lego filled most available spaces. He loved and was loved completely and there's now a huge void that will never be filled. I have some favours to ask, please hug your loved ones a little tighter today, and please share any stories/anecdotes/memories and photos you have of Nick."3 points

You know the deal with these. American made, huge tone and increasingly hard to find. Textured graphite finish in great condition, maple neck, rosewood finger board. The neck has been professionally slimmed down by North east luthier Paul Richardson to 40mm at the nut so it’s lovely to play and a seamless finish on the paint, you wouldn’t know it’s been done. Just been set up by him too and plays great. Overall excellent condition for the age of the bass. Comes with black scratch plate and the grey scratch plate. Padded case included. Really saddened to hear this. I’d met Nick twice over the last decade or so, as we traded P basses on 2 occasions. We’d go for coffee after and he was an incredibly warm and passionate guy with a wealth of knowledge on all things bass. If his family do end up on here, he was a wonderful person and his input and presence here was valued by all. Though my meetings with Nick were few he definitely left an impression. I’m so sorry for your loss.3 points

So there, I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopkeeper and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really, but sure enough I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.3 points

I am selling this awesome vintage Ibanez Roadster RS900 from 1980. Every parts are original, apart from the holes from an old thumb rest. Everything works as it should on this instrument, the conditon is very nice especially for it's age, of course there are marks especially on the neck, but they are not feelable when you play, and they give a nice vintage mojo for this instrument. Don't fall into that trap. Sound levels aren't measured in watts, they're measured in decibels, and there's no direct correlation between them. A 4 ohm cab may give slightly better results than 8 ohm, but just as watts don't tell the entire story neither do ohms. The potential issue with a 4 ohm cab is that it leaves no option to use two of them unless you have a 2 ohm capable amp. I gig with a 1x12. But that's my 112, and they're not all created equal. 😉 My point is you can't know the result just from watts, or ohms, or the size and number of drivers. I always take a test drive before buying a car. It should be the same with a cab.3 points

Vincent Metropol in the gorgeous Celeste Blue finish up for grabs. This bass is an absolute joy to play and due to its honeycomb chambered body comes in at just 3.3kg or 7lb 4oz! This is pretty astonishing for a full sized Jazz style bass. It is very resonant and sounds great unplugged. This is emphasised when you plug it in, the Haussel pickups sound full and thick and provide you with all the classic Jazz bass tones. I love it but am having a bit of a bass cull at the moment. Made a few pedals recently for my band (Erronaut) Two are to be sold as band merch. One is a green Russian big muff clone and the other is based on a blend of a muff and a cloven hoof, a bit of a play with the values and components to try and find a middle ground. the third one I made for my own board. It’s a Dunwich designed CTG (Cisneros tone generator) a combination of a clean blend, ds-1 and dod-250. I added in a footswitch to toggle the DS-1. this is quite a space savour as I usually have a a blender, ds-1 and dod on my board. drilling and uv printing done by tayda2 points

If people wonder why I’m skeptical, I’ll use an example. This is an old one of mine. It was built by Steve at Electric Ladyland in Bristol who sold it for £1000 in 2001. There’s a route under the bridge that’s visible (and was previously covered by a Badass bridge). The neck and body were joined in his shop, the electrics are all rewired and the pickup cavities enlarged. The pickguard was previously an original 70s one, but has been swapped again. I sold this for £900 in 2005 and told the buyer all of this. My new Triungulo Barbanera arrived yesterday. It’s such a good pedal. I had one before but swapped it for, would you believe it, a Cog pedal with a Star Wars picture. It took me all of three days to order a new one. I believe this one has a new trimmer inside too although I’ve not opened it to check yet. I also placed an order for an FEA Labs Opti-FET this morning as my waiting list number came up.2 points

Back in 1990, the band I was in got ourselves in to pay on Telethon '90. The host was Jimmy Tarbuck, though the only time I got (briefly) to speak with him was at some ungodly hour in the morning, when we were wondering when we'd be on. I sought him out at the same time as a few guys from another band wanted to find the same thing. He looked along the line of us (about half a dozen black guys in proper band uniform and a white bloke in a lumberjack shirt) and said to me "You're not with them, are you?". Well, it was funny at the time. More recently, I was on series 7 of Robot Wars (on Channel 5) with SMIDSY. Didn't talk much to Craig Charles but I did wind up Jayne Middlemiss (and nearly enticed her onto the back of my bike). We also took part in Techno Games as Sprocket - I did Techno Games 2, and I still have my silver medal from coming runners-up in the football. Got to have a chat with Phillipa Forrester, who was just spectating at the time due to pregnancy, and with Noel Sharkey. We also took part in the sumo, during which we opened SMIDSY's jaws, which was against the rules. Derek Foxwell came over to tell us we were disqualified and why, and then they wanted to film us being told about being disqualified. So we stood there, Derek came over to us, and said "You're disqualified. Now f*ck off." This explains why in the broadcast version, Derek is grinning as he tells us we're disqualified and we're trying not to snigger.2 points

I've got four of the flat LED PAR units which were around £12 each from Aliexpress, and we just put them on the floor pointing up. I do have a PAR bar too, but it's extra hassle and stage room so ICBA to take it out. I'm having a look at DMX control of the PAR cans just so they can do a few interesting things.2 points

They somehow remember their last settings so I have them paired two at the front together (I numbered them so I wouldn't get them mixed up), two at the back together, just doing a slow colour wash change. Doesn't matter what order or how slowly you plug them in, they catch up and soon sync with each other. Chuck them on the floor so they shine up the wall. But they will chase or do the school disco flashing if you want them to - all controlled via an app. Can't recommend them highly enough.2 points
