A lot of the gigs I have been playing recently are with my rick 5 string 4004, I thought about getting a 5 string 4003 made. i looked into it but ultimately you end up paying the same as a real s/h ric for the same price so I decided to just get a normal 4003 and see if I got on with it. So that turned up today, a matte 4003s - I have a practice tomorrow so I get to hear what it sounds like, but I need to go through my normal set and try and adapt to having a string missing. Traditionaly it has never worked, and I ended up ignoring the 4, but we shall see- its a bit harder to convert a 4003 to a 5 string with the bridge! First impressions are good, apart from the obvious lack of strings! Anyway, useless without pictures, so here we are11 points

Terry it's certainly not a competition to who's the biggest bass shop, it doesn't matter. Everyone seems to be doing ok so that's all that matters, so no more go under. We (Bassbros) offer the same returns policy, as required by law. On the email issue, I'm sorry if you haven't had a reply, we have had ongoing issues with our account which we're always trying to get on top of. Most emails seem to come through as we usually receive a large amount a day which we reply to, but it seems some may not be coming through (sometimes the 'sell your bass' page) . If you don't get a reply feel free to call us to check. Also we work flat out, there's only a couple of us here, so always doing the best we can working long days every day and just expanding the showroom currently on top of all the usual things. We sell around 1500 basses and guitars a year and ever growing so we have a massive turnover of instruments, with only a couple of us here it's a lot of work so aways doing the best we can. Thanks, Will - BassBros6 points

Squier 40th anniversary precision bass in red with gold adonised scratch plate. A beautiful looking, amazing sounding precision bass. I don't need to tell you how good these are, there's an Internet full of outstanding reviews for these. I had so many p basses including USA, sire, g&l, yamaha and this imo is the best. Why? It's light, it's super comfortable, super easy to play and sounds fantastic. Ask anyone out there, these are superb. Its in fantastic condition. Hardly used. There is 2 small hair size details that you wouldn't notice, and I never did, and that is it. Only genuine reason for selling is my van is broken and it's stopped me from working, hence I need to sell this to get it fixed. Pick up Leyland Lancashire.5 points

Don’t really want to sell these basses, but the new band dictates I’ll be playing a lot more guitar so fancy getting a decent six string. With the building work costing fortunes - I don’t want to take any credit on or anything. Anyhow - these are Soloking MJ-1 basses. They look like Fender Roscoe Beck basses. They cover lots of different sounds. Roasted maple necks etc. They were in a blow out sale at Andertons for £150, I thought it rude not to. In typical “me” style, I had pickguards made by Earlpilanz on eBay and fitted badass bridges. They’ve been used for an album I’ve now scrapped…which is a real shame. The basses were bought for that band and now it’s gone bump - I don’t really want them anymore. A couple of tiny marks on the headstock of the blue one. I’ve also sorted the annoying jack socket issue where you could only use skinny straight jacks. £200 without badass. Original pickguard and Bridge included £15 to ship in UK.4 points

I have for sale my beautiful 2016 Sandberg California TM5 in a rather tasty blue (Marley Blue I believe?) with a maple neck. Delano pickups with 2 band EQ and coil split switch (humbucker to single coil on rear pickup), white block inlays and weighing in at a rather svelte 4.1kg. This has been an absolutely brilliant bass to own and play. Construction is second to none, bettering Fender’s traditional jazz bass design with fanatical German attention to detail (just don’t test its emissions). Hardware is all shiny and tight, with just some player wear to the body and neck. 35” scale though doesn’t actually feel like it. I’ve suffered with 35” scales and shoulder pain in the past but this doesn’t bring it on at all; it feels like your common-or-garden 34” scale but with a wonderfully tight B string. Well balanced, it sounds great and the Delano pickups have a lot more character than I ever thought they would have. Beautifully matched to a 2-band EQ with coil split switch. Low action with a beautiful vintage-but-not-vintage feeling neck. It’s been a staple in my wedding band for some time now but I’ve been offered something fantastic and need to raise the funds. Comes with the standard Sandberg soft case. Not willing to post unless you arrange courier etc. and send a box, but more than happy to meet within 50 miles or so of NP12 (Blackwood, South Wales). No trades as I’m raising funds. Any questions, drop us a message. Cheers! Sam4 points

I bought this two weeks ago to see if I wanted to get back into fretless playing after a hiatus. I decided I did, but wanted a more expensive one (just bought a Godin A5 Ultra). So after two days I asked Peach Guitars for a return within the allowed return time. They asked if I had taken the see-through film off the pickup, which I had as the film was falling off anyway, getting in the way of the strings. They point blank refused to accept it for Return! So, I'm offering this beautiful bass in MINT condition, which had only two or three hours playing, for £100 less than the asking price pretty much everywhere, as far as I can see. Padded gig bag included - as in photo - and I still have the Peach Guitars shipping box for it. UK Sale preferred. I'm very impressed with the bass for the price, and see it is getting great reviews on YouTube. Any questions, just ask. Rob4 points

As far as email goes, these days it is a less than ideal way of doing business. I got back from holiday a week and a bit ago to an inbox of 250 work emails, most of which were cr*p but more than I expected requiring a response. My boss had been away for the two weeks before me, monitors a team email account since someone left and wasn't replaced. He told me that he had deleted a large number of emails looking for business in my area when we had already said that we wouldn't be accepting applications, because he didn't want to bother me with nonsense emails when he knew I would have an overflowing inbox. However, someone later contacted me separately with a different query that I answered straight away. She then asked why she hadn't got that response when she made the same query three weeks ago. Almost certainly, her email had been accidently deleted along with all nonsense ones while I was away! You have to remember that Bass Bros offer a specialist service, operating in a very niche part of the market. They are also very good value in that part of the market. A couple of months ago, I was looking for a new bass with a budget of up to £3k. I talked to Bass Bros and another specialist, who are really good but generally a bit more expensive. Will was selling a virtually identical bass for around £450 cheaper than the other guy. When it came to part-ex another bass, he offered £500 more! I ended up selling my old bass to Will (again, for an acceptable price) and buying a bass for a little more than half my maximum budget on eBay (a Fender AVRI rather than a Custom Shop), but it was obvious that Will does offer an extremely good service in that space. Of course, you can deal with Andertons and get your emails answered straight away by a bigger organisation. But you won't get the benefit of the specialist service the Bass Bros offer, if that's what you actually want and if you're prepared to pick up the phone!4 points

Just thought I'd comment/praise that I like the ease with which you can send a signal to different outputs/sends/headphones and set up the means to control one or both outputs with the onboard volume. Very useful as I'm about to do an acoustic 'style' gig (with a Bass Uke) and I want a signal to send to my personal monitor (volume controlled from the Stomp) and a separate line to the FOH, which isn't affected by my Stomp onboard volume adjustments. Oh and in my other band I need to to send path A (dry) to an output and path B (effected) to effects send, in order that I can run a stereo / bi-amp (signal split at my frequency choice onboard the Stomp) dual rig; very useful for adding a bit of grit/drive to the top end of my 12 string bass and retaining the bottom end unaffected. Yep, pleased with how this Stomp is working out.4 points

Allow me to once again look at the email thing from the shop's side: IME as a former shop owner (mainly high-end sea kayaks), email is the least efficient way of really helping customers and also the least efficient way of surviving as a shop. Of course, there's a huge difference between the email: - "Could I visit the store on Sunday when it's officially closed? " and the email (of which I've had more than enough) : - "Your kayak "Greenlander" vs. competitor's kayak "Transporter". Discuss. " There are many aspects to this, but among those: - It starts with half-interested customers firing short emails at several shops at a time, demanding lengthy answers. - It's incredibly time consuming to answer well, especially when you do not know the customer in question, and do not know their aims or their needs. - Even when you decide to answer well, there's no impressive revenue as a result. Revenue comes from people phoning in and especially from people actually visiting the shop and trying out the kayaks that might fit. I could go on and on. A quick, live, exchange of thoughts, the shop asking the right questions and responding well to the answers (and in my case: seeing the customer on the water) helps the customer best and at the same time helps keep the shop afloat. My website specifically asked people to avoid email because of its inefficiency.4 points

So, apparently as of some time in August, eBay are now FORCING a seller to offer DHL shipping as a mandatory option for items over a certain size/weight, which will effectively mean ALL guitars/basses. The big problem with this is that when someone buys your guitar/bass, it defaults to DHL, which then when you go to try and arrange postage you, as the seller, are only given a time slot of between 0800 and 1800 Mon-Fri... ridiculous! Who can regularly devote a full day to sitting on their behind waiting for someone to maybe collect their parcel?? I've used eBay for 19 years, I've sold hundreds of guitars/basses and have always been able to trot down to the post office in my own reasonable time and send the item when I'm able either before work, after work, on a lunch break etc, this new dictator-ish rule of eBay means I simply cannot use the platform anymore for selling guitars/basses as I can't afford to stay home for a full day to facilitate collection. 19 years of regular use, and because someone in the lofty ranks of eBay has organised themselves a tasty backhander from DHL it means us, the plebs, can effectively no longer sell certain items without taking a days Annual Leave. Fug you eBay, and fug your fugging board or directors that thought this was a remotely reasonable option! Those of a certain lofty disposition can rarely see through the clouds to understand the impact of actions taken without due consideration to those on the ground floor. First world problem, absolutely, but still... frustrating!!3 points

IMO it's important to engage the audience at certain points with some craic, particularly if players have swapping around with instruments to do. I've seen too many bands missing the opportunity to connect with a crowd, appearing to be up on stage to please themselves rather than the folks who've turned out to see them. 'Dead air' - as any silence between songs is a term used on radio - can be avoided with a brief hello, how ya doing, great to be here, we're hoping to give you a good night, etc etc. whilst fellow band members are changing settings etc. It forms a bridge between band and crowd just as the music does, and as said already by some, can become integral to putting on a great show. As our bands designated front man I have to do this as our guitarist also plays sax, I have both a fretted and fretless bass onstage to swap over, I even very briefly introduce my fretless during swap over - as most folk would not realise it's any different to my fretted (apart from even more bum notes 😂) whilst our keys player changes settings on his keyboards as well as looking after the sound mix. My staple patter at some point is always 'apparently the louder you applaud and shout between songs, the better we play' and it works at many gigs. It's all part of the show, connecting the band with the audience 😎3 points

My big beef with my band. Waiting for the guitarist to tune up, find his plectrum etc, waiting while the drummer drinks his pint or searches for his sticks on the floor (get a stick bag fer cryin out loud). I'm a big fan of 3 songs back to back, pause for 'hello and we are' type chat then straight in with the next 3 songs. My bandmates don't get it, so I've given up. I once went to see Gladys Knight and the Pips and THAT was a proper performance with everything to time and script and no gaps between songs unless they were planned and even then there was some background music being played. I suppose some might say that it's too slick, but I loved it. There's a pretty good local folk singer I know who rambles on about the back story of each song for a good five minutes before playing it, but I guess that's part of the folk genre3 points

OK, I'll bite. So, I get up at 7AM and start my work for the day. It's gonna be a busy day, and, trying to cater for the customers' perceived (or preferably real) needs, I hardly have time for a coffee or lunch break, so my wife shoves food down my throat with a goose stick - at every opportunity. Customers even come from the extreme North of Norway to the extreme South where I live, specifically to talk with me and to try my boats. I sell hundreds of boats and do not have the capacity to sell even more, as that would detract from the level of quality that my customers wish for and that I think they need. After 7 or 8PM, the shop now closed, I'm having a few hours of administration. At 11PM, I start answering emails, and am not done before 2AM, after which I'll get five hours of sleep. Then, just as I'm to shut down the computer, an email arrives from someone who knows better, the email telling me for example that my website isn't good enough, to which I reply: "If my website had been any better, I could have sold even more kayaks, and that would mean less time spent with each individual customer. I don't wanna do that." That same email could also have been about my lacking email response. IOW: please do not curtly say that "ignoring your clientele is not a sensible way to do business". It's not certain that you're a better judge on this than the shop is. As I said: IME and IMHO, email is the least sensible way of communicating. It's detrimental to the customers' interests, whatever those customers might believe (of course depending on the nature of the emails).3 points

skip to the end, and here it is! (except this is with the nut in it's 'still pretending to be brass' state) The pots are the original ones that came with the bass. A pair of 250k pots which I've wired as volume - tone - 3 way selector switch. If there's any electronics boffins reading, can you help me with something? The bass had a .22 capacitor, but I replaced that with a .47 one. The only thing is, the tone pot has *basically* no effect. It's not absolutely zero, in which case, I could just assume the pot isn't doing anything, but it's just slightly more than zero. There is an absolutely miniscule difference between fully open and fully closed. Capacitor problem? Pot problem? Something else? Anyway, despite the lack of tonal variety, the sound is much-improved from the stock Bronco. EDIT: The tone pot works now! Turns out the capacitor was dodgy. Sounds great now. Very happy3 points

So here's where we get all geeky... @Stub Mandrel will understand this though Yes, already looked at that. Fuzzy skin is great for non-horizontal walls but it can't go on the bottom and on the top of flat surfaces. For example, here's the top left part of a six string, this is a Prusa Mk4 printer so it's 250mm x 220mm printing area. This is in Prusaslicer After setting to fuzzy skin I get this, I've zoomed into a smaller section. The vertical shells are actually quite good with fuzzy skin, but the top flat section (Middle Left) and the top slightly curved section with all the ridges doesn't work with fuzzy skin. If you can make the model far more non horizontal it works OK. I believe that Oraslicer is more advanced than Prusaslicer here but I know Prusaslicer and it's set up with Fusion and Octoprint. However the major issue here is that I don't have a printer than can print a body in one go, so it still has to be joined together. I've resolved joining accurately, I use centuries old techniques of dowels and pins and it works fine. However there is still a join line that fuzzy skin actually highlights as it has this nice random texture and then suddenly a a rather sharp vertical join line. If I was making tool handles or knobs then fuzzy skins is quite nice, but didn't work for this. I also have looked at very large scale printers and seeing if they can scale up. RatRig and I have exchanged comms and I've asked about a slightly bigger printer than they actually sell. They make a lot of fuss over their customisation abilities, but they were not keen at all on making the X and Y bigger than 500mm. They were happy to scale in the Z (that's the vertical) but not so happy in X and Y as it would need a new frame, heater pad, bed plate, mag sheet etc etc etc. They make a point of their flexibility and if they can't do it, I can't build one any better. I'm not disheartened, I'll get a better looking bass and guitar one day, every iteration is a positive step forward (normally), so even steps backward are good as I know not to go there.. If I don't blow myself up with the next batch of chemicals I mix up, I'll be happy. I will need to build a proper spray booth though, with a decent extractor fan. Some of this stuff is not nice on the lungs. I suppose I could get my scuba gear out, but I'd be looking like a complete tw1t (or something) wearing a reg, a bottle whilst spraying stuff. The neighbours are already talking Rob3 points

I've just got back from Islington after collecting this monster that I bought 6 weeks ago. I'd given up on finding one years ago. I've gigged a 12 in the past, I've played "those" songs live, I've seen Cheap Trick a few times, I've seen Tom Petersson guesting with Pearl Jam playing Surrender in the US, I've been chasing one of these for years. It's a 1999 B12L and it's like New Old Stock. It's pristine. @Wolverinebass has given me some great pointers for biamping via the HXStomp and shared patches that I've already trialled with 4-string Spectors. It's the first set-neck bass I've ever had, apropos of nothing, just saying. It needs a set up, it'll get new strings in the morning and then I'll see what it can do. It's relatively light for such a thing @9.5lb. No idea of neck dive yet. That's the original Hamer case and the original certificate with serial number is in there. More pics and updates as the week progresses.2 points

email may be the least sensible *to you*, but not necessarily to everybody else... I personally do a lot by email, because it gives me a written record and I can do it at times when most shops are closed. I'm not against other methods, but if offered I'll probably take it. If email is not an option that works well for a shop, then do not offer that as a method to communicate? Can't really blame people for using a method that is right there in the list of ways of contact.2 points

Given the voltages at most could be 9-18v if an active circuit was used, what would your safety concerns be based on? Interference could be managed. However it would be possible to ground a metal live rail prematurely if its touched. The problem could be designed out with judicious shielding...and thats why I referred to drawing inspiration rather than simply using. For example, assuming acceptable tolerances are achievable, the same rails could be fabricated in carbon fibre or printed plastic and the ribbon contacts run inside the tracks in each rail.2 points

I have hopes/aspirations to make not only standard PB JB and SR models with PEEK fingerboards available but also have them warehoused in the UK so that delivery doesn't require 6-8 weeks wait. (And...the warehousing has already been found.) Ideally it would be great to have something similar in the US as well given the shipping costs are so reasonable. However managing stock and always ensuring there is a contingency of necks available might be a challenge given the lead in times for fabrication...but how that gets managed really depends on the level of demand and my plans are very much led by demand. Yes, when the website is set up there will be a provision for custom orders. I'm loathed to call it a 'Custom Shop' but that's what it will effectively be. Pretty much anything could be possible if you have the 3D model or we can modify one that we already have. Custom fingerboard inlays, compound radii and woods, compensated nuts, fanned frets, fingerboard bindings, coloured weave, choice of fret material, through body necks, custom dimensions, custom decals even twisted neck profiles are possible if there is a 3D model available. Maybe at some point in the far off future true tempered frets might even be possible. The custom orders will be shipped direct from China obviously.2 points

Why the hell would Geddy and Alex give a flying f*** about anyone's 'concerns'? They have nothing to prove, and unsurprisingly have a desire to perform the music they created. They've found a drummer who appears to have no problems with the level of technical ability required. It's going to be entirely down to individuals whether they go to the gigs or not. Betdt of luck to them. If tickets are reasonably priced, I may go along, I haven't seen Rush since May 1983.2 points

Alright guys - I've just picked up the bass from Steve at Chapel guitars. The neck has been finished with Osmo Polyx which looks and feels great, so we'll see how it holds up. The loom is installed and working nicely with the now straightened pickups. I was sent two bezels by Gig.ink so I actually found stacking them game a lovely 'ramp' feel around the neck pickup, so that's what they're doing at the moment. I've only used tape so I'll see how I get on over the coming weeks. I've set up the bridge to my liking - despite being 'better' than the stock one I can't get the intonation quite spot on, but it'll do. Certainly, height adjustment is easier. Just a few snaps for now - I'll get some better ones to show off the neck. It's nice to be using the original neck with the fishtail tuners, which work fine and seem OK with the full scale strings which have been bedded in around the posts and bridge. Really pleased with it!! Bonus picture of my parent's new puppy, Lois. She's the gentlest little dog I've ever met. So quiet and just absolutely delightful (the previous two were absolute shits at this age!)2 points

The Tech 21 Steve Harris does this, I have one and it’s great. It has two channels with shared EQ, but seperate volume and gain controls and is capable of the sounds you describe above2 points
