  1. I do enjoy this YouTube series. Here's ep.36 on Roundabout.

  2. If your 5 string has no punch and is difficult to amplify then you need a better 5 string bass and a better amplifier.

  3. We had a somewhat different experience - we played together, off and on, for a year as a blues workshop at Band on the Wall in Mcr which ended with a friends and family gig at the BotW cafe. At the end of that gig we looked at each other and knew we couldn't let it end there. There was so much shared energy and potential, we just had to carry it on as A Real Band 🙂 Two people did drop out, one more joined, but by then we knew exactly how much commitment and ambition was shared. Played our first gigs outside Mcr last weekend, and we're all looking forward - realistically - to building on it.

  4. Need to pull out "Rain Tree Crow" - aka Japan reformed for a new project. Lots of internal politics as a result of Sylvian's control issues - I haven't listened to it for a while. here's your chance.

  7. 1972 all original Fender Jazz, with the original case, she’s aged beautifully with great looking wear and checking all over, she was Olympic white but is now a gorgeous buttermilk colour with the most beautiful piece of tort I’ve seen, I think my soul was a small price to pay.

  8. This is such a simple truss rod system that i'm wondering why it isn't used in loads of basses ?

  9. That neck i posted is a peavey, so yes, they deffo use it in some basses

  10. Yep - Musima, those were. They made some of the 80s Marlins too. Same type of truss adjuster appears on a fair few low-end Korean & earlyJapanese instruments, along with other eminently sensible but uncommon features such as zero-frets.

  11. When I tried the QSC it wasn’t billed as a standard PA speaker, or actually as an frfr as such - the marketing bumf suggested it was a multi-use cab for a variety of instrument, vocal, live and recorded music applications. As such, the dsp stuff is clearly there for a wider range of applications, for people who are just using one out and about or whatever. I didn’t buy mine based on that at all. I had it set to a default flat eq and a/b’d it with a DXR10 and another. It was flat out better at bass - by a significant margin. It felt better quality and was in special so the price difference was small. I use it as a monitor with DI in from a preamp, and pass through out to the desk. I have used the “bass” setting as a stand-alone - it makes a good backup if my pedal board failed 2 mins before the gig - I’d plug straight in and get on with it. It was always bought as a small footprint easy to cart about live rig when I didn’t need to provide lots of backline heft. I have an EICH t1000 and a vanderkley 2x10 1200w cab for that. In its bag, I can carry it, and a pedalboard and a bass in one trip from car to venue, and take up virtually no space on board at all. I can point it at me directly for monitoring. Sound engineers love the fact they just plug in to it and don’t have to worry about a bass monitor. The rest of the band love it as I take up little room, don’t wash out the sound, and I even angle it towards the drummer to give him a bit more. He loves it too. Our keys player bought one for monitoring such was his enamour.

  12. Second round done. You have to be careful with colour matching and consistency with the tinted danish oil, but otherwise it’s going on well: It’s starting to take on that nice satin sheen naturally, so I think a third round is in order and then a good drying off before some light buffing. I’m really liking the antique/old refinish look of it - sort of “stripped and refinished in the 60s” look..

  20. I think the technical term, given the smoky venues these basses will have been played in, is 'Fagnolia'... 😀

  23. It depends what music style you're talking but clearly 5 stringers haven't played a great part in indie or punk styles (though Alex from Blur and also Beck have been known to use Stingray 5s - probably studio only). There have been comments in this thread about industry standard 5 string basses, or the lack of. This is actually not true but there have been a range of them over the years - these would include:- MM Stingray 5 (great at a modern sound but also great at an authoritative vintage sound) - subsequently US Sub, Bongo, Classic 5 and Sterling 5. Lakland 55/94 or 55/01 - subsequently lots variants Various Warwick but particularly Thumb, Jazzman or Stage 1/2 Yamaha - various models Sadowski MTD - various Ibanez - various G and L various Somewhat late to the party - Fender (various Jazz and Precision variants) Many of these basses have been active type basses as the extended range arguably works better in this format.

  25. Snap..! The coloured cord end goes to the console; yellow for Xlr, red for jacks and blue for speaker cable. I've the same PA cables for over fifteen years, thanks to knowing which are mine. I, too, fit thin velcro loops for keeping the cables coiled up neatly. S'easy, really; now even our singer knows how and what to plug in where, and how to tidy 'em up afterwards. Result..!

  26. Very nice project. Looks really good. Sen wood sounds amazing in my 82 Ibanez Roadster, a bit heavy but sounds great. I think you are going to be really pleased with the bass once you are finished restoring it. All the work will make it even more special. Lovely basses these 70s 80s japanese ones. My two ones:

  34. Dan bought a cab from me. As I`m from darn sarf and he`s from oop north we met at a gig I was playing in the midlands for the handover. Had a good chat as you do. Comms throughout were good, swift payment, all that`s good in a transaction. Hope you like the cab Dan, it`s a cracker.

  35. It's slightly complicated with two cabs because the impedance changes so you may, or may not draw more power from the amp. That's probably less of a problem with valve amps of course as the output transformer means they should be able to match to most common impedances. For the same power doubling the cone area will give you an extra 3dB. That's how itsmedunc got such a good result from his Ashdown 4x8's I'm guessing here but an 8" speaker is pretty efficient if it gives 92dB/W. Two would give you 95dB about the same as a reasonable 12" speaker. Four drivers would double again so 98dB/W and two cabs 101dB/W a 50W amp into this would give an extra 17dB That will give you 118dB the same as you might get from a Two10 and a 100W valve amp. Two Two10's with a 100W amp would give you 121dB, with a little overdrive/distortion that would be as loud as a 124dB solid state system in practice. Louder than almost all drums and more than enough to permanently damage your hearing. At this stage I need to say something. Each 3db increase in level halves the time you should be exposed to noise. Anything above 85dB will damage your hearing permanently if you are exposed to it for too long. The 100dB levels we average on stage with a Rock band will start to damage your hearing in about 15mins without ear plugs. I have mild tinnitus. https://www.noisehelp.com/noise-dose.html

  40. Best wishes! and very well done for going for it. Respect. I took Bass Guitar Grade 1 at 60 and Grade 2 at 62 - got a Distinction in both. I did find it a bit disturbing sitting in the waiting room surrounded by parents who had brought their sprogs in for the exams and who were obviously much younger than me! Obviously you have much more at stake, but please don't let yourself be put off if you're waiting with entrants 30 years younger. It doesn't mean they're better, or more deserving than you of getting in. Oh and I totally f****d up the most important part of the 2 through nerves - broke down and said "Sorry, I've lost it." The examiner just calmly let me do it again, and his written comment was very positive. I suspect recovering under pressure is a skill they value. Hope this helps.

  41. I think you've chosen well. Take Five will show your competence in playing and soloing in an "odd" time signature. Autumn Leaves is a tired old warhorse, but an essential one to be absolutely competent in. And All Blues will demonstrate groove playing and blues soloing. Good luck. Can you bring a backing track, or will someone there comp on a keyboard during the interview?

  44. I left a band after 12 years due to boredom with the music and wanting to play different stuff. I assured them there were no personal issues and that I would cover the gigs for the following two months. Also offered to dep if they needed someone. We are all still on good terms and I occasionally go to one of their gigs. Just be honest about why you're leaving and try to part on good terms.
