Don't part with the '73. It's the better bass and is appreciating. The road worn will never be worth anything like that. Not always a factor but worth bearing in mind.4 points

Well I'm now the owner of a Burns Barracuda. Full report after I've had a couple more days to play it.3 points

Now SOLD - thanks for looking ☺ Hi Folks Continuing my recent gear clear-out, here for sale is my Hughes and Kettner Bassbase 600 bass amp, which comes with the all-important Footswitch and a 3U Stagg rack case to transport it around in. It's in excellent working condition having just been serviced . Now SOLD Apart from my Ampeg V4BH and Mesa Boogie Big Block 750, this amp has outperformed every other amp I've had over the last 12 years, including Eden, Markbass, TE, TechAmp amps and even the much praised Thunderfunk 550. It's also the most well made amp I've had too. If I wasn't moving house soon and didn't need the space, I'd probably keep this. I bought this here on Basschat from dougal back in 2010 I believe, and have used it consistently ever since, and it's done over 250 gigs in that time and never let me down. It's only ever given me great tone, a lot of power and plenty of headroom! The other great thing about this amp, is that it covers just about everything that you need, having two separate EQ channels, a tube pre-amp which really does add some grind to your tone if you want it, blendable FX channel, notch filter, bi-amp facility, DI and tuner out, separate headphone volume control and a mute switch - it really is quite brilliant! The tube in it is the original Hughes & Kettner supplied 12AX7. I've attached some photos to show all of the features, but if you need any more, please PM me... Links See here for more info: And here's a link for the manual: http://oldies.hughes-and-kettner.com/BassBase_600/BassBase600.pdf Footswitch When I bought the amp, it didn't have what they call the Bassbase stageboard for switching between EQ channels, activating FX loop etc, so I bought another almost identical Hughes & Kettner footswitch, and had it modified to work with this amp and it's great because it gives you even more versatility. This cost me about £45 to do in total, being £15 for the switch on Ebay and £30 to get it modified by my local tech. Technical info Power - 650 Watts @ 4 Ohms 1010 Watts @ 2 Ohms Poweramp - Dynaclip Preamp - TubeTouch Effects Loop - serial Switching Functions - EQ on/off, A, B Notch Filter - Yes Headphones - Yes Equalizer - 2-Band Varimetric A/B + Hi/Lo Bands Tubes - 1x 12AX7 Speaker Outputs - 4-8 Ohms Speakon, 1x XLR parallel Dimensions - 19" Weight - 18,5 kg/41 lbs Trades, shipping etc Just to clarify that I'm not looking for any trades on this thanks. Viewings welcome if you'd like to hear it first and I'm happy to ship it at your expense if you are nowhere near the uber-civilised south coast..😁 Any questions, please ask here or PM me.. Thanks for looking! Nik2 points

Hi to all For sale is now my longtime dream. (Or maybe trade for a Fodera). This is Ken Smith BT 6 from 1990. It have an Macassar ebony top and Macassar ebony fingerboard, the core is mahogany. This bass nails that John Patituccis first solo albums sound. It have also the original teardrop hardshell case. Both bass and case are very good condition for they age. And I'm interested about anykind of Foderas Standards etc... . This Smith is located in Finland and price includes shipping in Europe. Cheers - Mikko2 points

Well according to my db scale, an elephant having an orgasm is 100db and a 737 flying overhead at 100ft is 103db.2 points

3db is a lot! It's a logarithmic scale.2 points

There's no such thing as ohmage. Ohms are used to measure resistance, impedance, capacitive reactance and inductive reactance, so if one says' ohmage' it could refer to any or all of those factors. Adding a 4 ohm cab to an 8 ohm cab won't cause anything to blow, assuming the amp is rated for the resulting 2.67 ohm impedance load. Adding a second identical 8 ohm cab will result in a 3dB sensitivity increase compared to a single 4 ohm cab, assuming the drivers are identical save for their impedance. The pair of 8 ohm cabs would have twice the driver displacement of the 4 ohm cab, so they would have 6dB higher maximum output capacity.2 points

Sure sign of GAS - inventing a new category of playing context for which to require a new bass: live - check, recording - check, ah 'jam nights!' Need a JD.. and what about... 'Fretless jam nights!? You need to get that sorted pretty quick too. Don't forget the classic general purpose 'beater' but I guess your road-worn fulfills that category. 'FRETLESS BEATER!' (Sorry bass Tourettes)2 points

Nothing much happening at the moment. A piezo strip has been fitted under the brass bridge whilst the preamp (based on an LR Baggs version) is somewhere in the post. The idea is to have two separate jacks (like the original Zenith), one for magnetic and one for piezo (we could try and blend them but then we are getting expensive - and this project is going to be expensive enough as it is - so we arnt going to do that, and I can always use two cables and an A/B/Y pedal if that were needed). So in the meantime Simon has routed out the cavities for the magnetic pickups.2 points

Is it just me... a courier company has one job to do. Take your stuff and get it there safely. However, they have managed to con us into thinking it's perfectly ok for us to pay extra insurance for them to do their job properly. I work in IT. It would be like me saying, "it's just your luck if the software I write works. I recommend you take out insurance against me screwing up but the small print lets me off all the same if I do". I'm not going to be in business very long...2 points

This kind of thought can lead to some strange places. It's now common for children to bear the surnames of both their father and mother (a double-barrelled name...). If such a child, when grown up, then marries another with such a name, do their children bear four-barrelled names..? And if their children then grow up and marry... etc. I'd not pursue the issue too far, if I were you; that way, madness lies.2 points

When I saw the title of this thread I wondered if it was a new phenomenon. Courier Con, like ComicCon, or a convention trade show.. Couriers meet to swap, buy and sell dented van doors. Have competitions to see who can rev the most amount of black smoke out of their engines. Then see who has the noisiest door slam or who can shout the longest meaningless abuse at passing motorists in a single breath. Prizes for who can throw a parcel the farthest without looking and best excuse for not actually showing up at an address.2 points

Seema like a great deal if you're local, less so if you pay the £25 courier fee he wants: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Westfield-bass-guitar/302780954729?hash=item467f26b869:g:LbsAAOSwqUdbLYI91 point

Probably a deal/endorsement I'm guessing. Warwick are pretty savvy working with I/net musicians and educators to promote the brand to the blogging generation. Given Warwick's pricing, I bet the price of that bass is not too far of the Fodera.1 point

😂 I don't know about me making it unscathed either! Current set up is MXR BOD > PSK SDS-2 (80s distortion) > SA BEF Pro (with hot hand) > Boss CE-2 chorus. I'm not getting use of the HH in the current band (they're "Classic Crock").1 point

I don't think you are. Mixing an 8 and a 4 ohm cab is inadvisable, which leaves the option of 2 x 8 ohm cabs (assuming a 4ohm amp) or one 4 ohm cab. 2 8ohm cabs will be louder and sound better but are more hassle to haul. One 4 ohm cab is easier to haul but you won't be able to push it as much, mainly due to mechanical limitations. There is also the option of using one 8ohm cab depending on how loud you need to get. Using one 8ohm cab will get you approx 350w max from a 500w amp. In practice this is often more than sufficient! I'll always opt for one 4ohm (or 8ohm) cab because I'm a lazy bugger and in a relatively quiet band. I don't need to get loud. Getting loud is overrated anyway, imho. Currently I'm using a 350w 2x10 combo which sounds great, gets quite loud enough and weighs 16kg for the win.1 point

A last minute effort using my usual tactic of blind panic and desperation ! So to briefly outline the scene for this one: Wartime, a young lad has lost his family and is wandering round in a daze taking in the sight of the rubble that used to be the street he lives on. Suddenly he notices a badly injured cat, approaches it, then gently picks it up. He can see the cat is dying but gently comforts it in his arms, stroking it and talking to it to sooth it until it passes away in his arms. I think the point I am trying to make with this piece is to illustrate how humans are so capable of creating so much destruction and mayhem, yet so capable of displaying deep compassion and caring.... or something like that ! You can all go and cry into your pint down the pub now * no cats were harmed during the making of this music, I did however have to feed mine a few times* Enjoy ! The Fragile1 point

Jackson did signature models of their Rhoads, which was a signature model for Randy Rhoads originally. There's a Christian Andreu Rhoads, the Oli Herbert Rhoads, and there were once the Kevin Bond Rhoads and Matt Tuck Rhoads. Basswise, Lakland once made an Adam Clayton edition of their Darryl Jones model in natural ash with a maple fingerboard with black blocks and bindings.1 point

More speaker cones will give you greater dispersion so a 4ohm 112 will not sound as good as two 8ohm 112 cabs at the same volume...I think.1 point

Ai, but you’re talking abou selling bothof them Keep the ‘73, sell the Roadworn, and find a way to make up the rest for a Jaydee. I’d put money on you selling the Jaydee before the Wal or ‘73 later down the line Si1 point

Deepest congratulations on the arrival of your new baby. I think we should convene an extraordinary double bass bash purely so we can all have a closer look. What a THING! Still not sure the conductor of my local (amateur) symphony orchestra would be impressed if I turned up with one tho. 🙂1 point

This is the circuit that that mess is from: Thats with Sw2 untapped, and SW1 in normal (parallel) mode1 point

You’re considering selling a Precision to buy a Jaydee....for recording purposes?! ......said no-one ever lol Want the perfect recording bass, keep a Precision, if you want something flashy for a jam night, then maybe the Jaydee is perfect, but that’s about it lol. Si1 point

Today I persuaded a seller to use PayPal instead of bank transfer. I rung up Paypal and got a full breakdown of the fees (3.4% + 0.5% for cross border transaction + £0.20 for currency conversion...this last bit is important) and added this to the very fair, in fact very generous price he was selling his bass for. He'd had a less than great experience with them in the past but kindly tried them once more to make me happy. Apart from the rookie error of working out the fees on the original amount and not the larger amount Paypal paid him within a pound of the agreed price. All well and good so far. Paypal then asked if he wanted the money in stirling or euros. Euros he said. At this point Paypal paid him about 20eros below the conversion rate on all the sites we both checked. He was very good about it and didn't blame me at all but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I couldn't in good conscience recommend them in similar situations (cross border/currency). Basically I paid him £26 more in order for him to get nearly £20 less. I have written to them and asked for an explanation and will report back if I hear from them. I do use them a lot when paying for things online...maybe they'll see me as a valued customer...well a customer at least.1 point

This topic has been a massive pain for me over the last year. I moved back to the UK from Ukraine and had to take 4 basses with me. I took a few risks and was lucky but came to realise just how annoying this is if you have to travel regularly. The first two basses I put in a Mono M80. One was a neck through, one bolt on. I actually put the body of the bolt-on in my suitcase and the neck in the Mono, wrapped in clothes to keep it from hitting the other bass. I gate checked the Mono so it wasn’t under anything and everything was fine when I collected it at gatwick. I planned to gate check another bass but when I got to the gate it was too late and I had to carry it on with me and put it in a spare seat. Luckily I wasn’t made to pay for this. Finally with my last bolt on bass I put the body in the suitcase again and just had the neck in my carry on rucksack. It was sticking out but no one at the airport raised a fuss. Even though I consider myself lucky not to have had any damage to the basses, each time the process was stressful as you just can’t predict how staff at the airports are going to behave when they see a guitar case.1 point

There are many kinds of "active". Some are just passive basses with an electronic EQ added to the end (boost and cut treble and bass usually) eg Fedora. These allow the pickups to interact as on a parallel wired passive bass (the output is the average of the connected coils) but then buffer the output. Some have actual active pickups (there is a little buffer amp inside the pickup) which allows a low winding count and hence more treble coming out of the pickups (eg some Warwicks) ; some have separate tone processing for each pickup (Wal and my "East ACG-01" equipped home build) which gives you lots of tone control but robs you of that "pickups in parallel" sound (the mixing of the two pickups is equivalent to series wiring). The common thing these active circuits will do is buffer the pickups so no matter what length of cable you use and no matter what amp input impedance you have (your D800 will work with anything I think) no current is drawn out of the pickups so the impedance of the pickups themselves doesn't alter the sound. Basically you get a more consistent output. You can get a higher output too, tho my active Warwick has the lowest output of any of my basses - go figure. There should be no characteristic "active" sound - you can just expect to get more of what the pickups are making into the amp and usually that does mean more treble and more "twang" ... if you want to use it; and if you don't, then use the bass or the amp EQ to remove it. But at least you have the choice.1 point

This is one reason why I drove up to Matamp to collect my kit (280 miles + each way) so I could be sure that it got 'home' ok........... 😎1 point

My first decent bass was a Westone Superheadless. It had a superb EQ system in it and was a lovely bass to play.1 point
