  5. Right. I tried the QSC at rehearsal last night. Observations: - 5 piece band: drums, keys, 2 guitars, bass + vocals (Americana/rock) - Plenty of headroom - more than enough. Lots. Like buckets of it. I was at about half vol on the QSC and controlled volume on the bass or Preamp pedal. - It plays with Preamp pedals very well - gave a good representation of the sound I was after - Lots of bass for a 4 string - never felt like the lows were struggling - No parping out or rattling - nice and smooth. Response was as good as a Barefaced Compact and it was louder. - Projection across the room was also good All in all it worked very well.

  14. I`ve got a Wenger rucksack for my leads & pedals. I did use a Boschma Utitlty Case for a while, but the Wenger is pretty well padded, and easier to cart about being a rucksack. It has a good few compartments so I can keep amp-leads/guitar leads, pedals & gig-towel/set-lists, spare t-shirt, spare leads & strings etc all seperate so only opening whichever compartment I need at the time. Makes it easier that way as some gigs it`s own amp & leads/pedals, others it`s just leads & pedals as amp is provided. It wasn`t cheap, but it`s been a very good buy.

I always find criticisms of musicians as “flash” or “busy” a bit strange, as if the only sign of a great musician is restraint, regardless of whether that’s what is required at a particular point in time. I always got the impression Buddy was doing his damnedest to swing his band into outer space, which is a fairly admirable trait for a jazz drummer in my book.

  16. Indeed, a showbiz legend. Watching Buddy being interviewed on TV was always good for a laugh, with all his musician stories and antics. And of course, the Bus tapes are legendary. His driving, hard swinging Big Band playing was pretty spectacular in a showbiz way. Certainly put bums on seats. Not my favourite drummer, but certainly deserves his place as a respected, top musician. I only watched him play once (Lewisham Theatre in South East London), the evening was great, totally amazed by the level of musicianship from his young band. There are still a lot of his ex players who talk fondly of him, and there were some terrific, well known musos who passed through his bands. Steve Marcus (RIP) was playing Tenor with him for years and gives a great radio interview about him below (worth a listen - some good music in there as well).

  17. Are you high, Cameron? What on earth are you doing? This is a fantastic pedal (I own one) has three fantastic voices in it, each with its own tone knob. The gated dynamic fuzz (both at pitch and one octave below) is great for synth stuff, either alone or paired with a filter. It has a very good octaver too, with a wide range in the tone knob. I much preferred this over the Octamizer and T-16. Tracking is really good; not as good as the MXR but I’ve yet to find anything that is to be honest. Cameron is great to deal with and a lovely guy too. Don’t sleep on this as he might well come to his senses soon!

  20. Has anybody else tried Olympia flats. Really cheap at £13:99. Low tension, great sound and feel to them. I actually took a set of TI Flats off my Yamaha BB4424x to fit these and I really do prefer them. Well worth a punt at this price.

  23. No, small rehearsal room so no need for PA backup. Vocals and acoustic through the PA in the rehearsal room Keys also through a QSC K10 Guitar - AC30 Drums - Acoustic - full kit. The acoustic swapped out for a second electric for some songs and that went through a Marshall head with a 2x10 cab.

  24. Have Andertons actually taken on board some of the stuff that was thrown at Lee? I don't think I need a spoiler here but: I know that Andertons videos are hitting thousands of views, but I'd like to see less finger-pluckn and more pick work. Also, if you're showing off a brand new copy reissue clone of a vintage bass, then have an actual vintage one there for comparison sake. Having a 60s vibe is meaningless unless you have something to put it up against.

  27. The J pickup on yours is in the 60's position - i.e. further from the bridge. It'll honk less than the 70s position, but in theory it'll be louder as there's more string movement where it is - so it should balance better with the louder P pickup.

  29. Rules of thumbs: Venue equipment is generally tired, knackered and will not deliver the sound/tone you desire. In a ton of places I've played, it's only there to allow for quick changeover and sound-guy convenience. Always take your own gear.

  32. At the moment it's still Chromes - regular light gauge: 45, 65, 80, 100. Bought them October 2012. They feel and sound great. Not too stiff and really easier on the fingers.

  35. Not sure they're addictive - however if you can get on with them they're good. However, there are flat wounds and flat wounds - I was put off them when I bought some of a certain make and once fitted put me off playing the instrument largely because the string tension made it feel like arm wrestling. Probably OK if you're a double bass player wanting to play a bit of bass guitar. Since then I've found several types that I really get on with including TI, Roto Solo bass (actually not fully flat wound but half ground), EB group 3 and EB cobalt slinky flats. These all have one similarity - string tension more or less the same as round wounds. The cobalt flats are absolutely amazing and are permanently resident on my Stingray Fretless whilst TI flats are a current fixture on my Classic Stingray. Im not sure about wearing them in - the first set mentioned resulted in the bass not being used very much. Strings are such an important part of an instrument, I don't think anyone should have to compromise - choose strings that compliment and suit your playing - we are all different and one person's utopia is often another's anathema - including flat wounds - you have to remember flat wounds were really a thing of the 50s, 60s and to an extent, early 70s (when bass was not really heard that much in pre hi fi days - at least in the UK) - ok they are popular currently but it is largely a retro thing in my opinion. I personally love Pino's Precision sound with John Mayer using flat wounds - and am convinced Bernard Edwards used them on his Stingray for some of the famous stuff in the late 70s (based on flatwounds being the only way I can create his popped string sound on We Are Family plus Stingrays shipping with them till mid 78). However Pino is probably one of the world's best bass players - I am not and however much I aspire to play like him I probably won't and I doubt flatwounds would be that much help in me getting there anyway - it's more about technique, knowledge and feel.

  36. Think of it this way, say another band on the same night had an extra guitarist and keys - the FOH would have to deal with those extra channels then, why should you be treated any different. Just class the B9 as your keyboard player! The B9 has a dry output, so unless you want to split your signal beforehand so you can send an octave up into the B9 (which I recommend trying), just go into the B9 first and send the dry output to the rest of your bass chain. I really like the B9 going into a bit of overdrive or even a dirty guitar amp (that you could then mic up), so give that a try too!

  37. Before cutting holes in your Nate, would it be worth selling it as is and looking for a PJ? If you mod' it, it may well reduce the re-sale value (modification usually does). The Mexican Fender PJs can be picked up quite reasonably second hand.

  43. Hi guys, woah, there's really no need for this kind of conjecture! I'm sorry my original posting may have seemed so cryptic, I just really had no idea how to go about doing this. First up I have no intention of selling this bass nor am I a scam artist / Chinese infiltrator i am a guitarist (i know, sorry about that) who also enjoys playing bass who seemingly got some amazing luck and I'm just trying to estabslh ownership of a fantastic instrument so I can feel comfortable abut enjoying it, or if I discover that this actually wasn't meant for me then I shall gladly return it to whoever it should rightfully belong to. It really is that simple. It was bought at a Bootsale of all places so you can probably see my thoughts about its origin. After getting it home and realising it actually wasn't the Chinese fake I first thought I went, uh oh, has some poor son / daughter, neice / nephew sold this on without realising what it is they had? I have searched for any reference to the instrument having gone missing / been stolen and there is absolutely nothing I can find so I'm hoping I am, as Trevor so eloquently put it in a p.m., the luckiest bu*^er around, haha. but until i've done my very best establish that I shall keep this thread active in the hope that someone may make a connection somewhere and get in touch. I can say that once this is resolved either way I shall post full pictures and details up as it is an interesting instrument and one of those OMG moments and maybe then you'll realise why I'm unable to do so at the moment (sorry again if that seems rather cryptic!!!!).

  45. Now now now chaps. Before jumping to conspiracy theories you might try finding some facts. Been chatting to Stu by PM and to be honest if you want to label him as anything you can accuse him of being a “lucky bu£&er”. I know that every time I walk by a junk shop or go to a car boot sale I imagine I’m going to come home with a 59 Les Paul that I paid the princely sum of £100 for. And if I did I’d probably wonder if I’d just unwittingly done a shonky deal, because I’m pretty sure I’m not that lucky! Once in a while someone is... and the worst you can accuse them of being is a “lucky bu£&er” and you can hardly blame them for being a bit bewildered!
