That's a nonsensical, illogical stance though. But I give you that if you stop 10 random people on the street, at least 5 will agree with you. In the real world however, the most talented musician most probably (almost but not wholly by definition) will be known by, and understood by, very few. The moment you people want to educate your kids, and think that newborn babies have little knowledge, is the moment your popular view has become a falsehood. Cue the Triangle of Knowledge. People who think that Paul McCartney is the most talented musician ever simply have no clue, and when they attack people like me for being condescending, they are in fact being arrogant themselves. It's the Dunning-Kruger effect at large.4 points

Needs a couple of prongs sticking out the top with a blue electrical wave arcing between them (and maybe a hunchback manically turning the dials as well).2 points

I know the last time I said something about not liking Prince's work, I got slagged off. I still don't like the vast majority of what I've heard of his. Like a latter-day Paul McCartney. Still, while it's OK to say what you like about Coldplay or U2, Prince is sacrosanct so I suppose I'll get slagged off again. I won't deny he's composed a lot of stuff and could play lots of instruments, but I'm not convinced of the merit of what he's composed.2 points

Looks like an original Mustang routing to me, especially considering that plate on the bottom, but someone has done a really awful job of perhaps trying to fit a standard Precision pickup in there at some point. If this routing wasn't on the original product description from Mr Baxter, I'd perhaps be having a quiet word, because if I'd known about that at point of purchase, I'd want a few extra quid off. Found images of your amp on Google, and as you say there is an external speaker jack on the front. This will do one of two things - either enable another cab to be added as well as the internal speaker in the combo (in which case will need to be at least 8 ohms?), OR enable another cab to be added whilst cutting out the internal speaker completely. Without knowing the spec of the amp and what ohmage it will work into it is dodgy trying another cab, especially if the former option is the case as it could do some damage. Only thing that may be okay is turn the treble up a bit so you can hear some hiss, then quickly insert and remove a jack plug into the socket - if the sound disappears as you do this you’ll know it disables the internal speaker. UK distributor for Stagg appears to be EMD Music in Surrey, tel. 01293 862612. Maybe worth a call to them for spec details. Cheers.2 points

When I'm playing acoustic pub jams, I often take my tiny Tanglewood Elfin bass. It's about 25" scale.... I'm 6' and yes, it does look a bit "toy-like" - but do I care? Nah! Actually, it's often my backup bass too - surprisingly, it sounds like a full size Precision (don't know what pickups they are, but they sound great) and it probably only weighs around a kilo..... maybe even less2 points

I've just been thinking it would have been Jimi's 75th birthday the other day, I would have loved to have been in Noel's place a few times! Who would you love to have played with? I first saw Hendrix on Hasting pier 22 October 1967, then again almost 3 years later in 1970 at the Isle of Wight festival, a couple of weeks before he met his untimely end. Would he have still been playing/writing today at 75 I wonder I'm getting old ?1 point

Just seen this. I've always rate Sting as a bass player and he's still playing with a ton of energy. Love the band.1 point

@ordep - I see where you are coming from. But if we're talking about cheaper then second hand is the way to go, right? I've previously said, this only makes sense for me if I can pick up a relatively mint M900 at second hand prices, otherwise I could be 'wasting' £250 on the overdrive part of the amp which I may not particularly end up using. But there have been a fair few M900s coming up in the FS whilst, taking your example, a second hand Baby Sumo 1000 is going to be as rare as hen's teeth so I could be hanging around for a while... Secondly, I may be wrong, but I'm not convinced that overlaying a pedal EQ on an amp is going to be the same or indeed as effective as having the manufacturer of the amp attune the EQ of his amp to the rest of the circuitry? I guess an illustration of this is with the M900 itself: a good number of folk have mentioned that they find the microtubes on the M900 more to their liking than on a separate pedal, whilst others have said the opposite. The point is whichever side of that debate you come down on, it's clear that the external pedal overlay is not the same as the built in feature. ...AND NOW HOPEFULLY BACK TO THE MAIN THREAD AFTER OUR BRIEF M900 DETOUR1 point

Yes but if I am getting an additional amp head (which I am, as I am going for separates for the first time) why get a different 800W to 900W class D amp with an EQ I don't like and a £250+ DG pedal to correct it? That doesn't make any sense to me.1 point

OMG, ok, I'd love to replace Doug in Kings X. Replacing Daryl in The Stones would be cool too. except he's a bit too far in the background for my taste I hope everybody is happy, making me choose fantasy over reality.? Blue1 point

I've been looking for one of these for a while. Those of you who know Kawai will know about the build quality. This will be a steal for somebody but there are 20 bids so far. Remember that you'll incur additional costs because you're importing from the Good Ole 50.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawai-KRB-105-Graphite-neck-P-J-Gold-Schaller-Series-Parallel-24-Fret-No-Issues/172997415192?hash=item2847731118:g:QkcAAOSwH-daGdgG1 point

Beastie Boys are there unsung heroes of hip hop IMO. When you have Miles Davis calling Paul’s Boutique one of the greatest albums of all times it’s worth a listen. Not sure what to make of all the mumble rap lately though. It definitely smacks of uninspired, but I also leveled the same criticism at most of the Bad Boys stuff (Puffy, Mase, etc).1 point

That's what's going thru my mind. If someone's marriage is at risk its usually down to someone mis-behaving. Had to google pejorative as never heard that word before. I'm impressed with your diction and vocabulary knowledge. Dave1 point

Yes. The Close to the Edge tour and lineup. Playing bass with Wakeman, Howe and Brufford. Even the thought of it blows my mind. Plus using all the old Sunn gear. Wow.1 point

This one dragged me out of lurking from across the pond. Beastie Boys should be on the top of this list for versatility. Could easily do a semester class at uni for them alone. Early 90s San Francisco / Oakland / Bay Area had a lot of really good stuff with the Hieroglyphics Crew: Casual, Del the Funky Homosapien, Souls of Mischief. East vs West Gangsta era is pretty much Tupac vs Biggie Smalls (both did some amazing work). Nas' Illmatic is probably one of the best hip hop albums of all time. From the dirty South, you have the likes of Outkast and Goodie Mobb (and by extension, Cee Lo Green) The Fugees are seminal (Wyclef Jean, Lauren Hill). Jay-Z, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Black Sheep, Tribe Called Quest, Leaders of the New School, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan Eminem's song Rap God is nothing short of lyrical fireworks. Lots more that I can't think of offhand.1 point

So the rumours about your stick are true then? I'm actively avoiding it at all costs I seem to recall you being the Farage-like figure head of the anti DarkGlass campaign due to what you consider to be their fizzy drive sound, but yet you rise from the dead like Lazarus with your imminent purchase of the Microtubes 900 amp1 point
-
Possibly, but getting a driven bass sound to work in a band context is an issue that a lot of people have. Many bass drive pedals can be mushy or fizzy, but by pushing the mids you get a more usable sound that works well with other instruments regardless of what they are. And for most guys seeking a driven sound there's usually going to be a driven/distorted guitar or 2 in there somewhere, a driven bass with a mid bump will usually compliment this especially if the guitar(s) are scooped. Flea and JPJ lurking in the background? Wow, I've clearly got the wrong end of that stick1 point

The main issues are going to be this - The amount of phones in the audience that are in the audience with wifi enabled The amount of wireless that is in the venue on 2.4Ghz. The amount of metal that is present in the area and the receiver and transmission location in relation to large blocks of metal The power of the transmissions that have the potential to directly interfere (e.g. exact same frequency or frequencies that will cause RFI due to intermodulation) with the portion of spectrum that you are using with your wireless. The proximity of wireless transmission sources next to you receiver The proximity of devices that generate interference to your receiver... e.g. mains, faders, transformers.... I don't know the event at which you were using your wireless - but wireless co-ordination at large scale events can be very tricky! In the pro world, 2.4Ghz would never be used. 5 Ghz would tend to be avoided also... but more likely to be interference free due to more channels being available without running into intermodulation issues... there is however, a trade off (assuming like for like power output) of propagation and range. Generally, digital wireless for instruments and mics would be deployed over Channel 38, or using frequencies that have been licensed to a venue or have a time limited license for a special event. Wireless iPads are used now and again to aid mixing - but thats usually done before show time, where the risk of RF interference is lower. At show time, FOH and Monitor world will be behind their desks... or minimum, a laptop with a physical cable to the control network. For most people, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz are going to do the business at most venues (although you may run into issues at say conference centres or hotels where there is likely to be a lot of wifi) - and of course, the big plus is they are license free. Channel 38 systems will usually solve all RF problems... HOWEVER, if you factor in the license and the cost of digital units that operate outside of the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz frequency ranges, then you'll see the cheaper solutions are a good fix for most gigs... just don't rely on them without a backup cable!!1 point

It's not going to affect the bass, still a sweet bass, but could affect resale value. He'll likely say that he didn't check under the scratch plate.....I always find that a difficult line to follow for a vintage specialist. If it's not true, it's not honest, if it is true (most likely as I think Andy is a nice guy), then why isn't that happening at a vintage specialist?! Si1 point

Actually, people who can write hit classics are ten-a-penny, and that's why there are millions of hit classics on this planet. People like Bach, Mozart and Penderecki are extremely rare. Me, I love thousands of hit classics, and my iPod is filled to the rim with stuff you might appreciate - ranging from death metal to Spice Girls to Beatles to Prince to the Dixie Dregs and other already mentioned artists. However, the hit classics seldomly have been written by the most talented musicians ever, which is what the thread was about. I still love them and appreciate these songs for what they are. I do not need to dream up myths about them in order for them to become valuable enough. For example, I love the Beatles and have every album from Rubber Soul and on - but one. Paul McCartney still ain't no Bach. BTW, there's this little quick-and-dirty litmus test: ask Penderecki and McCartney to analyse and critique each other's work... You'll soon find that Penderecki immediately sees the strenghts and weaknesses of Sir Paul's output, where Sir Paul will not be able to even start analysing Penderecki's work. Yes, I'm aware that that is not of value to you. Your story is somewhat more like this: if by a weird coincidence a newborn child cries loudly and it somehow becomes a hit classic, then this newborn child is mentioned by at least 5 of the random people you stop in the street, and this newborn child then logically is way more talented than Penderecki ever was... I call BS. Sorry about that. Actually, in any part of life, I am always open for any criticism. You and I have never met, and I do not expect you to believe me, but what counts to me is trying to find something that has some value and some truth, and I like to find this stuff in a (fighting if need) collaboration with other minds. If that truth reveals my weaknesses, then I've learnt something and have received a clue as to what I need to work on. Criticise me all you want, but I do prefer it when people who criticise me base their input on facts and reasonable analysis. My calling people clueless may have been misguided, but does not come from a vacuum. It stems in part from some form of truth (Paul McCartney is a talented person who has written many songs that the general public can love (me included) but not more than that, and in 300 years he'll not have the status that Bach and the like will still have), and it also stems from observing the loudmouths on this planet for six decades and seeing how badly they treat the talents on this planet - talents who often accept this maltreatment in silence because they understand how the talentless function. When I wrote my above post, I was a bit fed up, and also remembered another thread that I sadly couldn't find and link to. I was unsure whether I should post, but the being fed up won. Your remark about my social calibration is the typical use-of-hastily-found-stick that I'm not too enthusiastic about (not that it was a particularly heavy stick).1 point

I tend to treat this 'sale' with suspicion. If they can reduce the price of stuff by several % and still turn a profit how much is the stuff really worth? My late mother worked in a shop for years (Co-op) and knew all the tricks to offload slow moving stock. Take items off the shelves and put them in one of those big wire baskets with a sign saying 'special offer' or 'our price' and folk would buy them. Another trick was to say that some item was not going to be available again and people who didn't even like the stuff would buy it! If you are in the market for something and can get it for a few quid cheaper than usual then fine but treat all sales with great caution. When have DFS ever sold their sofas at 'full price'? As for Black Friday, well it's turned into a continuous money grab that appears to be lasting for weeks!1 point
