What is the full chain that creates your sound? Finger to ear...

For me, the full chain is:

Dunlop Tortex pick (0.73 or 0.88)

DR Lo-Rider strings (medium)

Warwick bass (Streamer LX4 or LX5)

Van Damme cables with Neutrik jacks

Korg tuner, MXR compressor, Darkglass Alpha-Omega pedals

GK Fusion or Mesa Boogie head (preferably tube)

SpeakOn cable(s) with Neutrik connectors (2 or 4 pole, depending on head/cab)

GK or Mesa cab (preferably 4x10 + 1x15)

I am a restless soul. I don't think I'll ever be able to finalise the chain. Except for my finger tips and my ears everything else is always up for grabs.

Don't worry about finalising it, just remember to pull it. Remember, un-flushed is unforgiven.

I guess that you're assuming that people use the same gear all the time. My signal chain changes depending on what the gig is, so it would be something like this...

Mostly fingers (often thumb, sometimes pick) > a Bass > Elites or LaBella strings (but sometimes not) > Spectraflex cables > some pedals > an Ashdown amp > 1 or 2 Ashdown 1x12 (or sometimes a Bergantino HS410)

There are far too many variables to nail it down to one rig.

Kallium Strings (Hybrid .124, .082, .061, 0.45) tuned to either D Standard or more frequently Drop C

G&L SB2 or Franken Precision with G&L MFD pickup fitted

Van Damme Leads

Polytune 3 > Wilson Effects Mini Freaker Wah > Barefaced Machinist > Boss BF-2

Ampeg SVT-CL

Barefaced Two 10

Fingers

Elixir Nanoweb .045-.125 or Status Hotwire .040-.125 on my 5-strings, .045-.100 on my 4-strings

Wide range of various basses, but mostly my Status S2 Classic 5-string and 4-string or my Warwick Streamer LX4 or LX5

Spectraflex cables

Pedaltrain Nano with a TC Electronic Polytune 3 Noir, EBS MultiComp, Darkglass B7K and EBS UniChorus

Ampeg SVP-PRO 19" tube preamp. Depending on the gig, it either goes straight into the PA, with an EBS NeoDrome 12-150 as a personal bass monitor, or into an EBS HD350's power amp and an EBS Proline 410.

At home I plug my bass straight into the NeoDrome 12-150. Awesome amp!

The variable for me is the bass I'm using.  Other than that everything else is pretty settled now.

Fingers or, usually, Dunlop 1mm tortex pick.

One of any number of basses, all passive, all strung with TI Flats.

Boss WL50.

TC Polytune 2

TC Spectradrive with 'clean boost' patch and stock compression.

Then either DI into the desk for the PA or, for home/rehearsal, into ART 732A

For me it's

Fingers plucking quite hard, sometimes jazz III pick

Slightly dead roundwound strings

Pretty high action

Stingray special 5 H with treble cut on the eq

Mxr bass octave deluxe for synthing

Sometimes compression and drive from the hx stomp

Either aguilar th500 with db112 or aguilar db751 model in the hx stomp for amp.

And my ear is obsessed with low mids and sitting in the mix without stepping into other instruments territory, which definitely affects my gear and how I play.

For 95% of the time* it’s:

Fingers

Ernie Ball super slinky’s (45-100) nickel

Musicman Stingray Special

Sennheiser XSW-D wireless

Lava cable

Bergantino B|Amp (parallel compression & overdrive engaged)

Bergantino NXT212

* The other 5% is various effects pedals for specific songs.

Usually Fender P ( a choice of several)but a good chance to post my favourite from 1973

Cable, Whirlwind maybe, there's certainly one in my case

amp (currently Ashdown RM500 Evo 2)

cab (currently mark bass club 1x15 and 2x10)

Nothing else, clip on tuner or the tuner on my phone

Fingers

DR stainless Lo-Riders (40 60 80 100 with a 125 on the low B)

GB Spitfire - so Bernie's pups and electronics system

ULX-D1 (transmitter)

ULX-D4 (receiver)

Kemper (My own SSL channel strip profile - I rarely use FX but if I do, they are done here)

Audinate Avio

Dante Network (ethernet switch) FOH desk (somebody else can sort this, my rig is DL32R (I run two, one for FOH, one for Monitoring)) → FOH speakers (my rig is RCF 745s with 8004s)

Monitor Desk (anything Dante enabled, I tend to lug a DL32R for its portability)

Live Professor (plugins - typically compressors and binaural processing)

PSM900 P9T

PSM900 P9R

64 Audio A12t

Cables of choice are VanDamme with Neutrik. (I don't know what the Dante ethernet cables are... probably came free with a home router or something!)

As others have said 'it depends'. At it's simplest and still suitable for any gig I've done or am likely to do:

fingers :)   --->  Strings (30's - usually Rotosound)  --->  Bass (custom Shuker)  --->  wireless (Getaria Airbridge) or OBBM cable  --->  Peavey Vypyr VIP3.

For my main band -

My knackered old fingers

Fender P-Lyte

For my other stuff-

Same knackered old fingers

Danelectro Longhorn or Jazz bitza or P-Lyte

(I like to have my signal chain unaltered so use Snark clip on tuners.)

You're missing a cable! (from your bass)
