  1. Well I really didn't need another bass, I think having 7 after only playing for 12 months is probably a sign that I have fallen victim to GAS, but as a huge Guy Pratt fan I couldn't resist any longer and I have no regrets. There are lots of reviews saying how good, and what great value these basses are and I cant argue with any of them. Even with my limited experience, and even more limited ability I can say it is an absolute joy to play and the finish and the overall quality far exceed what I expected at this price.

  2. So this is the “I’ll not sell this one” bass. It sounds perfect, quite modern and crisp…not vintage plummy Gibson. Does an MTD’ish style, seems to pull musicman sounds but will do vintage stuff, Ace, Mahogany Set neck, Mahogany Body, Beautiful flamed Maple Lid…Schaller Hardware, Bartolini Electronics… Original Case and Gibson paperwork (one latch not functioning) I will include the knobs it came with - seem to be very heavy duty, and the Gibson speed knobs I’ve bought to get it back to factory. 34” scale, ebony board: new battery recent GHS flea strings - very low action… Some small marks, nothing at “ding” level. Specific trades… Musicman Stingray 5 - Honeyburst/white pickup preferred Dingwall D-Roc/NG 5 string: if this doesn’t sell…no hardship, but I need a 5 for the band I’m using it for…and the ripper and Jack Casady’s do the other band.

  3. A bit of an odd one last Friday for the seven piece swing/jazz standards band. ! 100 years ago North Bay was incorporated as a city and there are many events going on to mark this and we played at the Italian club's old style dinner dance at their hall. An hour of cocktail music and then they fed us and the 160 guests and at about 8:30 we started our dance sets that included some Italian songs. The crowd was older and although we had a few dancers and others who sat around to listen to us we knew it was going to be a earlier night than they planned. We played two sets and finished not long after 10:30. Great food(prime rib) and I had chats with some of the attendees so all in all not bad and the ten or so Italian tunes we learned went over OK and we had some compliments on our music. As usual my weapon of choice was my Shen SB100 straight into our Bose PA. We were set up in a corner in a fairly large hall so we had no idea how it actually sounded. Downside is that after 7 years as a band the drummer decided to quit the next day after enduring a lot of hassles and criticism from the trumpet player. I am also a target but so far I can handle it, she is a music teacher and sometimes likes to treat us like one of her school students. She is often right but her attitude is the problem and no one ever calls her on her mistakes, very frustrating but I like the rest of the band and the music so I am hanging in. We have a good dep drummer for the next couple of gigs in May and June and BL is starting a search for another drummer, the one who quit is very good and was an asset to the band. Life goes on.

  4. I've just unearthed a veritable treasure trove of old recordings from 1978 through to the mid-90s. I thought these were all long gone to landfill, but my mother-in-law says, 'I've found a box of cassettes in the garage,' so I did a trip out to pick them up. Man alive. I'm just transferring the first one to the PC. In the early 90s we were rehearsing in our (rather well-heeled) guitarist's basement, a double garage conversion that was under the main lounge of his house. We had a ton of gear...I had two Hamer basses and a huge Laney stack, guitarist came back from a US holiday with three Jacksons (a purple Kelly, two Strat things in custom paint) and he was running a superb Fender Twin Reverb. Thinking back, I can recall he'd bought a Fostex F-77, a little mixer (for the drums) and a bunch of decent microphones, so we tended to capture fairly clean recordings whenever we rehearsed. Listening back, it's a home counties cross between Motley Crue, Anthrax and U2. I'm about halfway through the first cassette (dated May 1991), by which time we seem to have employed the services of a singer who is pretty much channeling Mike Patton (I wonder where he is now). It sounds bonkers. So f*cking fast. There goes my weekend.

  6. We made a music video! ....and an album actually. This is the video to accompany the first single release from the upcoming album. Do you think us old blokes in our 60's could get on Top Of The Pops? 😁

  7. We've been playing together for about 20 years and mistakes are few and far between. However we wear our big boy pants and can take the big OOOH face from the others when we drop one, and hand it out too. It's all part of the fun. No egos. I love it. The audience are usually clued up musically too, so they notice and join in the friendly barracking. It's all taken in good humour

  8. That's the email just arrived from the organisers, informing me of the event cancellation (postponement). They're offering two options: 1 - rolling your ticket over to a possible planned event in 2026. Or, 2 - refund of the ticket cost. Needless to say, I've requested a refund!

  9. I’ve bitten the bullet and contacted Mark at Classic And Cool Guitars re a Lionel Superlight. Had a band practice last night, used a sub 8lb Precision and back is sore today. That tells me invest in a very light short scale.

  10. I bought this bass off @jrixn1 just over 2 years ago I believe, I've loved having it, but it just doesn't get the use it should, I prefer 5s so though a P5 would be nice to have, but turns out, I still prefer 4 strings precisions. I think this is the price I bought it for, and it hasn't really changed since then, but I'm open to sensible offers. Currently strung with LaBella flats, but I can put rounds on if you prefer. Body: chambered alder with flamed maple top and back Neck: 21-fret (plus zero fret) hard rock flamed maple with rosewood fingerboard, blocks, and vintage white binding Scale length: 34" Headstock: originally matching, it was subsequently refinished by JP Guitars, Bristol. Nut width: 45mm Tuners: Hipshot USA Ultralites Pickups: Delano PC 5 AL/M2 (neck) and JC 5 AL (bridge) Controls: Volume, volume, tone; push-pull on the tone for both pickups in series. Bridge: Gotoh 205B-5, 18m spacing Weight: 3.585kg, and perfectly balanced - a real pleasure to play. Some info from the previous owner that I would not have noticed or known about if it wasn't pointed out -> It also arrived with stripped neck screws; these have been replaced. Truss rod works correctly in both directions. N.B. Maruszczyk truss rods are clockwise to loosen and anti-clockwise to tighten (i.e. against convention). There are a couple of small marks on the body, one of which has been painted over (see photos). I'd prefer collection in Edinburgh, or delivery/meet up within a reasonable distance, but I can sort postage at buyers expense if necessary. Cash would be ideal, but, I really want a Genzler Kinetix so happy to trade. I'm also after a short scale, and a Fender Coronado. For some reason I can't upload any more photos, I'll try again later (and include a post it note with date, but if anyone wants photos before that, let me know and I'll send them over)

  11. In an old band I was in, if anyone dropped one then the culprit had to raise their hand to show it was them. This sometimes led to some very funny moments, and our audiences often got it too.

  12. Here’s my two Sandberg Lionel's Blue one is passive and I’ve fitted a EMG Geezer Butler pick up for a more vintage tone. The Cream is two band active / passive and more modern sounding …

  13. We've run one for about 11 years now (9.5 years with our band line-up). Anything but cliquey, as we will NOT allow that, but you do tend to get the same people turning up playing the same things badly. We have never ever told anyone what to play. People have asked to play with us and we give them a set list to choose from in that case, but it's their night, not ours, which is why it's been going for so long. But we do get some new blood doing different things, we match people up to play together, or back them and people get decent length spots. I will be doing it up to the end of the year and it will no doubt carry on without me.

  14. I'm thinning the herd to focus on getting a few things I'm after. I like this bass, a lot, but since getting a USA Musicman Sub This just hasn't been out at all. There are some signs of wear, particularly at the headstock (see pictures), but it palys and sounds as it should. The original machine heads were rubbish so I put some Schallers on it. I'm ideally looking for pick up or delivery, I'm in Edinburgh, but happy to meet within reasonable distance. I have gig bags (lots of them) and I can fashion a box if needs be, but postage would need to be paid by the buyer. Still, I'd prefer you try it first... Cash is king, but, a short scale Fender looking thing, or a Coronado might persuade me. Just noticed the new proof of ownership thing, I'll get a pic with a post it note later today - I just took the photos yesterday, just because it wasn't raining in Edinburgh.

  17. Had the first rehearsal tonight with a new covers band. It's with the guitarist and drummer from my other band, and a female vocalist. We haven't got a name yet but we've got a gig in May 😬 . We need 3 x 45 minutes of material. Not too bad for a first rehearsal, it sounded pretty good at the end when we'd played through stuff. The drummer was nearly an hour late as he'd gone to the wrong rehearsal studio

  18. Anyone who has done any recording will know music looks like this That's three notes or possibly three drum beats. Each note starts loud and then decays. Within each sound there is a complex waveform which is also going up and down. This is just a random image but it looks like the scale on the side is in decibels and the loudest part of the sound is the first peak just above -6db. If you imagine that 0db is the maximum power of your 300W amp then this trace is probably not unlike your bass playing. The loudest note is nowheere near using full power, -3db is half power and -6db is a quarter power and that only lasts a few thousandths of a second. Within a tenth of a second the note is down to less than 10W and the average power is below even that 10W level. Your amp isn't being pushed at all. Swap the amp for a 150W amp (-3db on the trace) and the peak is still nowhere near the amps peak handling or indeed the handling of a 130W into 8 ohms of the Elf/BAM/Gnome amps. In fact if you bring in a 70W amp only the first peak is going to be distorted. This is where a valve amp scores, the distortion will only be barely noticable compared to horrid solid state distortion so a 50W valve amp would probably sound as loud but with a little bit of crunch. This would only be in the peaks and the rest of the music would be the same. The watts aren't bigger but you can turn the valve amp up a bit more before it sounds bad so you can get the same average power and not worry so much about distorted peaks. Incidentallyyou can use this information to get away with a smaller amp. The biggest peaks will all be in the subsonic bass so an HPF filters out the biggest peaks and you can turn up a couple of notches knowing your amp and speakers are safe. Alternatively you can add in a compressor which will reduce the difference between the loud and quiet bits of each note. You can then turn up the average volume with smaller peaks keeping within the amps limits but sounding louder. Maybe you don't need new speakers

  19. Reluctantly selling my 1997 Alembic Rogue. Very good condition, and all original save for some copper foil pickup screening work that was done by Martin at The Bass Gallery. Mahogany body with flame maple top. Maple through neck and ebony fretboard. Neck and fretwork are excellent. Body bears a small amount of player wear but this blends in nicely with the oil finish of the wood. It comes with a Kinsmann semi-hard case which is in very good condition Weight - 4kgs Thanks for looking!

  20. Selling my Fender Classic Player Rascal bass. Designed by Dan Smith at the Custom Shop and one of those bonkers rare short scale's. I'm mainly a Mustang guy, and one of my 'grail' basses have become available so this one needs to go sadly. In great condition, with one tiny mark that I've captured in one of the photo's. And I'll fling in a Fender gig bag with it. Based in Dumfries, but willing to travel an hour or two to meet someone halfway. And probably willing to discuss insured postage if as a last resort, that looks around £60 but I can check for a more accurate price on request. Give me a shout if anyone has any questions.

  21. Epiphone Jack Casady in sparkling Burgundy, I bought the Bass from peach guitars in September and it is in excellent condition. It has been used mainly at home and only gigged once. Normally I wouldn’t even think about selling this bass however I have a relatively serious shoulder upper arm injury which because of the size of the body is making it uncomfortable to play. I’ve tried an extra long strap and other things but unfortunately the problem continues so regrettably I’m putting it up for sale. The bass was set up by the guys at Peach guitars as part of the sale and is currently strung with Rotosound flats. Comes with a TGI acoustic bass gig bag/ case Bass is in Wigan and I can post or you can collect for free. Any questions let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them, Thanks Steve

  22. Gallien Krueger 700rb ii with new power amp board purchased from Polar Audio last month. I bought a 2nd power amp board for my main amp so this is now surplus. OK, I made a big noise about buying a dead 700rb ii for £50 and then buying a new power amp for £50 ( equals £100, I know)...I'm offering this at 175 purely as it's about half what a 700rb would go for normally. I tend to sell pretty cheaply, to stop gear gathering dust but below £175 then I may as well keep it. Obviously the heart transplant was done by myself as a DIY fix. The amp works well and actually sounds better ( new board maybe?) than my old faithful. So if you want a 700rb ii at a good price, hopefully I'm being pretty transparent. I am just raising funds as I'm not gigging much. Just to add, at the asking price I'm happy to meet up and handover the amp within say a 50 mile radius. From Lichfield, Strensham services for example. Not a fan of couriers from previous experience. Cheers Martin

It has a new battery and has received a new set of nickel plated D'Addario EXL165 strings (45-65-85-105), which really serve this bass. What you see is what you get! Look carefully at the photos taken from different angles and lights to see the real condition, which is used with wear and dings, with some light ones at the back of the neck. Here is the link to 20 photos in high definition: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C3RzDZolyTv6L_q1TstZU7s2LSc1nYD6?usp=sharing Due to severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus left and right shoulders injury (it's really painful to reach the tuners), I'm selling all the basses I'm not using like this one as well as some stuff I don't use. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. Don't hesitate to ask for more, but, please, before asking read my ad first as the answer is certainly already in it!

  26. Lots of interesting tidbits in here... I'm looking forward to seeing your L-1000 and Z7 in particular.. oh and that awesome Greco!! Also looking forward to hearing a Lace Alumatone and some Entwistle neos in the wild! At the moment I'll be bringing - Paulman P - a nice copy of a 1960 Precision, formerly of our very own For Sale forum (edit: has a Monty's P pickup) G&L JB (the silver heavy flake one) Fender Player Jazz Might also bring my '94 Ibanez Soundgear, although it's currently half way through a pickup swap with a Wilde (Bill Lawrence) PJ set and needs some additional setup. Might be an opportunity for curious ears to hear those pickups in action.

  32. At ours it’s sometimes ’bandioke’ where someone sings or plays guitar with a band - often for the first time. People have to pop their Cherry somewhere! We’ve had people who were truly awful - but so encouraged they come back again getting better & better each time.

Technically less than a month to go now I have 11-12 attendees. @rwillett @bigthumb @neepheid @ead @80Hz @GreeneKing @stevie @nekomatic <-- TBC @ossyrocks @peterjam @doomkeeper @Frank Blank Food will be provided, in the form of pizza. So if anybody has any dietary preferences such as vegetarian or allergies please let me know, so we can cater for you. You are also welcome to bring your own food. There is a full kitchen and (I think) a microwave. Tea and coffee will be on tap all through the day. There's no issues if other people want to come or bring friends. @zbd1960 are you coming down? 39. Playing in the house band at our open mic I was asked by another bassist if I would play his bass so he could hear what it sounded like (sigh). Cherry red P. As he handed it to me I only got a glance at the headstock and I thought I saw a circle with a ‘K’. Played a few runs on mute and the neck was ok. When I ‘pressed play’ it was awful. The two outer strings had no volume at all so you had to dig in to them. The two inner were so loud if you touched them they were overwhelming the band mix. The only ‘plus’ was that it was really light! Afterwards he thanked me and said how great it was sounding and as I handed the ‘Kay’s Copy’ back I noticed there was actually a pick in the strings over the headstock logo that made me think it was the Kay Logo. Underneath I saw an ‘F’ so asked him what it was. 1962 Precision was the reply. Owned since new he’d basically ‘given me a treat’ to play an awesome Vintage Bass! I was very thankful I’d thought it was a dog as it would save me thousands as I now didn’t want to own one! Unfortunately that was short lived as he brought its sister, a blonde 1962 jazz, to the next OM. That was LOVELY!

  40. Here's my homemade pedalboard. I'm now swinging both ways and playing guitar and bass. I prefer the sound of the guitar through the Tonex and the bass through the Mod Dwarf. So use the EHX box to mix. The third channel of the EHX box goes to a Mac for recording purposes. The Tonex has some lovely Fender amps which sound great with a Fender Tele or Strat. It's all driven through a Cioks DC-7 mounted underneath. Its bigger than it needs to be, I could save 2-3cm on the width, but its not a big deal. Its very, very solid. You can certainly stand on it, and we got up to 150Kg with zero issues, so possibly too solid Everything is printed including the cable management which nicely slots into the aluminium extrusion.

I think Phoebe's guitar playing was better than our guitarist (but don't tell him I said that). It's good to see that there are youngsters coming on as well as the old brigade.

  43. I started an Eberhard Weber tribute band doing his solo work, took three bass players to take his place. Did one gig, everybody said what the actual F was that and the project hasn't seen the light of day since. Took a year to learn the songs and get them down properly but the effort was worth it from a musical growth perspective if nothing else (certainly wasn't a financial success!).
