We (Choked) were at the Marrs Bar in Worcester last night supporting local band Phon's album launch. Twasn't very full, perhaps 40 peoples and they all sat round the outside like cool muso types (I usually do this too). As everything was a bit late - I hadn't been able to arrive till after 7pm so no sound check - we did our short'n'sharp 30 minute set (probably a blessing to all!). However, all went fine, drummist managed to finish on 3 in "Knockout", I did my bass solos with extra widdles'n'pops and all was generally groovy. As there was a fine PA (with obligatory overloud bass drum thwack) I just took the Markbass 2x10 to be powered by the Crown amp with DBX compressor and BBE pre, all front-ended by Helix and Parker bass. Shoes were zebra striped brothel creepers. Got home by 2230 to a nice dram of PC7 cask strength...14 points

There were lots of people taking photos and videos of our gig this evening, but unfortunately I wasn't one of them, so you'll have to make do with a brief description. We were at a very small pub that we've played many times before, but this year the dates just haven't aligned to get any in the book. So it was nice to revisit and kick off the Christmas season (it's ok, it's December now). As it's a tiny pub we decided to "go acoustic" again. We've done a couple of those recently and thoroughly enjoyed them. Tonight was fabulous. The crowd really enjoyed something slightly different and the place was rocking - especially when we got them to sing Since You've Been Gone. Playing the EUB was a challenge, from the sublime (White Christmas, Moon Dance, Stuck In The Middle) to the ridiculous (War Pigs, Witch Queen, Crossroads) Rig: Stagg EUB, Fender Rumble v3 500 combo, tinsel Footwear: black 8 hole DMs Edit: I must give a special mention to the guitarist for playing the guitar solo in Whiskey In The Jar... on a kazoo! 😂11 points

Another gig tonight, this one local pub 4:30-6:30, really short gig for us, and really well paying. Easy setup (if tricky parking), noone started a fight, so all good. It was a good first half, second half was a bit weird, the guitarist complained to the drummer about always playing so fast, so we did a couple of songs really slow and it was actually pretty hard to do them at that speed. Think the drummer wasn't in the best of moods as the drum lights weren't working. and we were probably still knackered from yesterday Sound was good until half way through the second half when there was an edge of feedback. it was my mic which had somehow got much louder and had a resonant peak in it - no idea what happened, but turned it down and it was fine. My stand was near the PA, maybe something connected. Oh after the request last night of chesney hawkes, another woman came up to us with a request, I said, we can only do requests if it is on our list, expecting something equally as odd, but it was sex on fire so we did that one10 points

Indeed - it also makes me laugh when someone asks for a request, and when told the band don’t know it they start singing it to you as if that will help, usually whilst you’re playing another tune as well. 😆7 points

Selling my Bergantino HD212 It’s in pretty much perfect condition, with just a couple of scuffs underneath- this was how it was when I bought it a couple of years ago. I have two of these, and used to run them off a power amp, and the sound of them is great. I now have the HD410 also, so I don’t really require both of the 212’s. I’m happy to travel a fair bit to meet up halfway to sell. Trade wise, I’m only really interested in other Berg cabs. Willing to do a straight swap for a HD112, but has to be in good nick and have a cover. Or maybe a HD210. I prefer the HD’s over the HDN’s. Also interested in the NV cabs (to match to my DB750) - 15, 215, 610, 412 etc. Can be a straight swap, or extra cash from me. Thanks - Paul6 points

There really needs to be a device that you can fit to your sound engineer to give them a good slap with every canon-blast kick of the bass drum. It's ruined so many gigs imho6 points

Slightly dodgy video from Saturday night. You can see it was a very tight fit for a five piece. WhatsApp Video 2024-12-01 at 16.41.34.mp46 points

Supported local heroes, The Owls, for a St Andrew’s (St SkAndrews) night do, which was sold out, despite being £20 a ticket. 3 band line up and we were on first. Turned up early so we could get a proper sound check, man alive the big ass PA was über loud! We played well and folk were up dancing almost straight away, not bad for a 7:30 start. The one problem we had was the other 3 in the band decided to play Substitute, whilst I was playing I Can’t Explain; you can’t get the staff . Great comments from everyone and looks like we’ll get some work off of the back of it. My gear? JMJ Mustang through my M87 comp and VTDI, into the top act’s, bass player’s TC head into Ampeg 4x10, which was unnecessary really, as the sound I was hearing was all from the monitors.6 points

I really don't get what all the fuss is about. Why is there this fascination with having the original, shagged out pots anyway? It's this kind of counter-intuitive stuff that drives people to put new innards in old pot casings. Pots die, it's a fact of life and heavy use. Replacing them is the sign of a well looked after and maintained instrument, no? I'm pretty sure even the most... invested classic car enthusiast isn't that concerned with having the original, factory installed spark plugs in the engine, are they? Or have I just opened up an entirely new and even wrigglier can of worms?5 points

Had a bunch of bladdered lads at one gig who really wanted their mate who was “really good” to get up and do a Suede song in the break. Not our style, no we don’t know it, and no you can’t borrow our instruments or plug you phone into the PA 🤬Maybe you should form your own band. Best one recently was the girl who came up asking if we did any Bon Jovi (at least the right genre) just as our singist belted out “SHOT THROUGH THE HEART…” 🤣5 points

NOW TRADED Here's the next one in the great arthritis-induced bass sell off. Your chance to bear the burden of ownership of a lovely Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass TB - 3 Tone Sunburst as these basses only appear for sale occasionally. The serial number is from 2007/08 so that would make this bass one of the very early ones as these basses were only sold between 2008 and 1012. Solid old-school rock thump; think Fender 70s tele basses. The bass is currently strung with some well-worn in Thomastik TI Flats. The Ash top and back have particularly lovely grain that shows through the finish. The bass has benefitted from some quality upgrades: · The bridge is a 4-saddle item with brass saddles, possibly Wilkinson given the tuning machines fitted. Normal and through-body stringing are supported. · The tuners are Wilkinson long stem items. · I believe that the electronics have almost certainly been upgraded but I cannot 100% guarantee that · There is also a pickup surround that is not original and was on the bass when I acquired it. Here are the full specs: · Body: Basswood with Ash top and back. · Bridge: 2-Saddle Vintage-Style Precision Bass® - upgraded with 4-saddle bridge with brass saddles · Colour: 3-Color Sunburst · Controls: Master Volume, Master Tone – upgraded electronics · Country Of Origin: Indonesia · Fingerboard: Maple with black dot inlays · Fingerboard Radius: 9.5" (241 mm) · Neck Pickup: Fender-Designed Humbucker · Neck Finish: Satin Urethane · Neck Material: Maple · Neck Shape: "C" Shape · Number of Frets: 20 · Nut Width: 1.6” (40.6 mm) · Scale Length: 34" (86.36 cm) · Tuning Machines: Standard Open-Gear – upgraded with Wilkinson long stem tuners The bass weighs 4.1kgs (or 9lbs in old money) on my digital scales and will come with a good quality gigbag. It is in very good condition with hardly a mark on it that I can find, the finish is a lovely gloss that show all the reflections of the stone which doesn't help when you're not a very good photographer! If you have any questions please just ask. Also, if you want any more pictures of any part of the bass, I’ll do my best to capture the detail you are after. Collection or meeting up somewhere is much preferred, but I have packaging so can post (UK Only). I'll split the cost of postage 50/50 wit you. I realise that I need to do a proof of ownership pic., but if you have any concerns please look at my ACG J-Type listing you will see the same floor and wall behind the bass that will hopefully give you some re-assurance ahead of me sorting out a picture.5 points

Recently acquired 2007 Corvette Taranis. Great price, excellent condition and also sub 9lb. I was going to add a 3-way switch like the Jazzman but after experimenting with the single coil options by just unsoldering coils, I prefer it stock.5 points

*** NOW SOLD *** For sale is my beautiful and mint condition Fender FSR 70’s Precision. I bought this bass brand new in 2018 from Guitar Guitar in Epsom and has only been used as a backup a few times between 2018 and 2020 for a 50’s Rock N Roll band. I really really don’t want to sell it as it’s the nicest Precision I’ve played but I only play fretless these days and struggle with fretted basses so I’m going to let this go to a new home. This bass was a limited Fender Special Run and sounds fantastic with the Ash body and American 62 vintage pickups. Specs are as follows, • Ash Body • Maple ‘70s “C” Shape Neck Maple Fretboard • American Vintage ’62 Single-Coil P Bass Pickup • Vintage-Style Bridge with Steel Saddles • Vintage Style Tuners I am based in Camberley, Surrey and any trial is welcome. Shipping included in price or will drop to £700 if collected.4 points

It's too good, and this is too cheap! decided to keep it! Brilliant versatile bass, just not me. Surprisingly easy to cope with the fan frets, and with the Darkglass pre, this is a powerful bass. In excellent condition complete with original gig bag and tool kit. https://www.andertons.co.uk/dingwall-ng-3-5-string-electric-bass-ducatti-matte-white-w-maple-fingerboard-pcng35dwmmh-snt-1/4 points

Lots of good answers here. As @Phil Starr says, your setup is probably capable enough to handle the venues you are currently playing. It's not your normal 1x10! Of course, the only way to know for sure is to try. If you do find that your amp is struggling, the most effective way of getting extra headroom is adding another Monza. This will give you an extra 6dB (in theory) - a noticeable volume boost - and you'll have the option of using one or two cabs depending on the gig. It shouldn't prove too expensive, as you'll then be able to sell your 2x10. Unless you're playing reggae and boosting the bass to its max, a Monza stack will cope with just about anything. Any louder, and you'll definitely be going through the PA. As far as amps are concerned, it might be worth looking at more powerful amps once you get a second Monza (and even if you don't). I always assumed that the sweet spot was around 500W into 4 ohms, and I've owned most of the well-known brands like Markbass, Aguilar, Ashdown RM as well as heavier amps like Trace, Behringer, etc. In my opinion, there wasn't very much to choose between them. I ended up buying a Veyron and stuck with that for a while. However, when @Mertonplonked his Trace TE1200 on top of a Monaco at the SE Bass Bash last year, the difference in sound quality was immediately noticeable. More punch, more clarity, greater definition - a more 3D sound. Overall, it's much more enjoyable to play through. My Precision with flats now sounds like Sean Hurley playing through thousands of dollars of studio gear - or at least it would if I could play like him.😃 The Trace was quite expensive but I notice they are now selling for around £850 new. To mitigate that price somewhat, it includes an excellent two-band compressor that is much better than any other built-in compressor I've used and on a par with £150 pedals. I bought the Trace from @BassAdder60, who seemed to prefer his Eich T900 to the Trace - so it might be worth checking that one out, too. Other expensive brands, like Mesa and Bergantino, are available but I haven't tried them.4 points

Just to close out on this thread, following the purchase of Lilly, we played our first gig together on Saturday night up in deepest darkest Northumberland. As I was bringing the PA, I left my amp at home so this was a gig of two firsts, first full gig on acoustic double bass, and first gig without any form of backline. Relying solely on the FOH for monitoring was possibly a leap too far, so I will be using my IEM’s for the next outing, but other than that it was a massively pleasing experience and Lilly received a lot of compliments from the crowd comprising of friends of the band, locals, and others who had travelled to see us.4 points

Amazes me when we play a ticketed sold out gig and we still get requests for totally unrelated to Glam songs. We even had one young lady ask for anything by Beyonce. ??? At a Glam Rock Tribute show .............. really. Did you read the posters or adverts on FB for the venue before buying a ticket at £15. DUH !!!!!!!! Dave4 points

It's the ones who stand in front of the drummer with either the lyrics or a video on their phone during a different song and expect the band to absorb it by some magical process.4 points

" Really well paying" That's my favorite type of gig. We have one coming up. A corporate Christmas Party. Requests can get dicey. I saw a member of a 60s hit making band ( 4 hits in our top ten) now in his 70s play a solo small bar gig. Great singer and musician but apparently pretty bitter about the music business. Someone requested Paul Simon's The Boxer. His response" sure, I'll play it, 20 bucks." Wow, that's bold. Daryl4 points

Selling my great 6-string bass MTD Kingston Z6. This bass has an incredible low end and easy playability! I recently have it checked by a luthier and re-fretted the last 2 frets. Now the action is very low and makes it even easier to play. The MTD Kingston Z6 bass offers a fretless design and an ultra-stable Buzz Feiten tuning system. Designed for the discerning player who wants low end with playability. As with all the other MTD Kingston basses, it incorporates many of the superior design elements found on Mike Tobias’ revered MTD USA American series instruments. It also captures the look of a handmade, boutique-style bass. Carefully constructed the Z6 bass marries beauty with unparalleled performance. The Kingston Z series basses have a rich voice and a darker overtone. The two MTD proprietary pickups are combined with Buzz Feiten tuning system, 3 band active preamp and mahogany back and sides. The headstock matches the beauty of the body and the elegantly designed asymmetrical neck ties it all together. Features: - Favored ergonomics - Buzz Feiten Tuning System - 3 band active preamp - Figured maple - Mahogany back and sides - Natural Gloss top finish It has Daddario Pro-Steel strings on 0.30 0.40 0.60 0.75 0.95 0.125. The sound is focused and with a nice low end. The reason I am selling this is I just got another 6-string and I no longer need it, also I need the money to pay the new one....3 points

Wife got me a GSS Baby Sumo for my birthday. It's tiny! It's loud! Comes in a lovely little metal flight case. It's barely the size of two paperback books. Just gave it a brief test with my Hamer Cruisebass into a GED2112-DI. (We live in a detached house, neighbours away. Chortle!) Man alive, the clarity is incredible. I've jacked the Ged into a variety of amps and effects returns thereof over the years and it's never sounded like this... it's almost been a disappointment at times. It sounds like when I've just gone straight into a mixing desk. Lovely!3 points

Shoulder injury and non-improving back issues have led me on a journey to ultralightweight basses, i.e., below 6.5 lbs, which is reluctantly why I am now sadly selling this beauty. It is actually quite lightweight, at only 8.3 lbs, but I have become accustomed to my ultralight (Spector RST) basses now and a new Sandberg SL. This Stingray is funking Chic awesome and was my main gigging bass throughout 2023 and early 2024 - I think the bass is a 2018. I do love this bass and will regret it when it is gone, no doubt, but needs must. Proper Stingray growl! It probably has 2-3 small user marks, but certainly nothing that sticks out and are in the pictures—it's actually in excellent condition, TBH. The Ska sticker is easily removable. It also has a D tuner with the original tuner included, as already stated it is a lightweight bass, low action on a silky super smooth roasted maple neck, DR strings (I think), beautiful grain, and an MM case with the MM case candy. Sale only please. I'm in Plymouth and happy to courier at cost to buyer. Bargain- £16003 points

Back in the new dive last night , parking can be a misery in the downtown core , found a spot right in front of the bar. It was a Christmas miracle. Numbers were slightly down , but a good crowd , some wonderful regulars up to play. Good night. Just two bassists to sit in. The new room was sounding really nice. Not too loud , place was grooving. Usual rig , Bergantino 112 , Monique preamp into the effect return of a Bergantino Forte V1. Big orange hollow body Gretsch bass , Dano Longhorn as a backup (not played last night). Black leather Chuck Taylors. ( winter slippers)3 points

I am sure it is easy enough if you have practiced it, but to be honest, I doubt I have ever listened to it all the way through and frankly we can mess up songs we have practiced so it wouldn't be an option. I just love the way random members of the public always say 'can you play this, its really easy', and they are always people who don't play anything and almost never can remember all the words anyway.3 points

We got a few requests for rock songs which our singist politely declined, and a couple of requests for Erasure, which I'm sure will be ignored as they're out of his vocal range. I think I also need to find a rock group to satisfy my need to rock out more.3 points

I wasn't playing today but we had two fabulous services. Sometimes the congregation just want to SING and it's all the band can do to hold on for the ride!3 points

My son started a couple of years ago. I stopped playing but kept a couple of basses. Upon comming in from work one day I could hear a bass being played. Running upstairs I found my 16 year old son playing my Thunderbird through my trace elliot boxer combo. I was well impressed but did remove the tbird ( don't want this damaged) and gave him a squire precision I still had. He is now studying music performance at college. Has a Jackson Kellybird in trans red. He is in a band at college and has just had his first gig.3 points

Thanks, but I made an error. The radiation angle of any source only shrinks to 180 degrees when the radiating plane is a wavelength in dimension. Since with direct radiating speakers the radiating plane is the baffle it's called the baffle step frequency. When it's smaller than a wavelength the sound will wrap around the cab, eventually going to 360 degrees as you go lower.3 points

Given that The Edge seems to use a different guitar for each song the guitarist will need a big van & deep pockets. As a slight aside a mate of mine is convinced that different guitars/body woods/pickups/strings make no difference to the sound, and that the only thing that does is speakers. So we’re telling him that from now on The Edge will just play a Strat for every song but that his roadies will be wheeling out a different cab for each, so he can get his sound.3 points

After last night's cheering and singing along, today a huge room with a handful of people. Friends and family outnumbered the rest Set up near the tables rather than on the (magnificent) stage We were without our (mainly) rhythm guitarist so it was a bit odd as some cues missing and had to reallocate some intros etc. But we treated it as a gig rather than paid rehearsal and played pretty well. One silly mistake by me, had a pint of shandy in the first set, then a coffee in the break (to warm my hands up). Towards the end of the second set I had to listen to mr bladder and take avery quick break Got some pics of my gear... Quecha approach shoes:3 points

I don't normally receive or expect compliments for playing in the church band but this morning I received one! A very attractive young lady, who has been coming to our church over the last few weeks, came and told me how much she enjoyed my bass playing. I thanked her but said that no-one really notices the bass but she was insistent that I had done a good job. She was in the early to mid 20s and was working at a local veterinary practise. This 74 year old grandad now feels very encouraged!3 points

Benefit gig in the local village pub, Corris in mid Wales, packed out as we've got 2 more gigs before we stop playing or regroup with a new guitarist. Graham bless him is fantastic but arthritis is making playing tortuous for him. Double special gig as our singer Beth's mum died unexpectedly 2 days before so she was singing for her dear mum. Such a buzz when the gig works, everybody in the pub singing and the sweat pouring off you.3 points
