  1. Not sure if this counts, but just done my first school concert in my new job teaching primary age kids to play in rock bands. More terrifying than any gig I've ever done. Enjoyed it now that it's over... No crying, being sick or wet pants and the kids did pretty well too.

  2. I'm involved with my mate's 'Rockschool' summer school project for the kids who take music lessons with him. They form groups of up to 5 and a tutor mentors them. It's scary how good some of them are. Last time I did it, the band of 14 and 15 year olds I tutored did three covers, wrote their own tune and, because they nailed it all early (the school runs for a week), they learnt Hotel California, complete with harmony guitar solo. At the end of the school, there's a concert in a decent venue with proper stage, sound and lights and they went down a storm.

  3. After the sad departure of the Squier Sonic P-bass in California Blue, it's replacement has just arrived. And what a replacement! Just unboxing it, and it has already exceeded my expectations. The packaging itself is on another level between the Chinese Sonic and this Indonesian Classic Vibe 70s Precision. Quick tune up, not much needed. Action good, might be tweakable better. Intonation appears spot on, too, which I've never had even from a USA Fender...Relief could be a little better, maybe? The point is, this is playable right out of the box. My one trepidation was the spec saying the nut width was 1.685", which is between the two normal P sizes. Well, that's obvious garbage, just from feeling it. It's a 1.625", bang on. And slim front-to-back! It's just a great feeling neck. A quick noodle, and I feel right at home. Flatwounds will be installed soonest, because I have a phobia about rounds on a lacquered board! Because my first Fender Precision was a 75 Fullerton, I've always liked the shiny gloss-finished type of neck. This one is really nice, darker-coloured than I was expecting - vintage tint? - but not roasted dark. My other walnut P-bass was a 79 fretless, seen here with two nieces, the older of whome is nearly 50 now...eek!

  6. It must have been a similar shock when the first players to use an electric bass turned up, leaving the Luddites drop-jawed when they realised that there was no 'bass fiddle'. The Stratocaster looked a little strange, too, when it started to replace the Dreadnought folk guitars everyone was using. It's just the wheel turning, s'all; it's all done with software on an iPad now, anyway, so even these new-fangled novelties are 'old hat'. One gets used to it all after a few generations.

  8. Here is my excellent Barefaced One Ten for sale. It's in great condition and ready to go. I don't need it any more because I'm hardly playing. I'm on the wrong side of 70 and there doesn't appear to be a place for us older players where l live. It's 200 Watts at 8ohms and it sounds great. It has a fitted Roqsolid cover. I would like £300 for it please. I don't need any trades thanks. I prefer cash on collection but I'm happy to post it. Thanks for looking. £300. I live in Catterick Village, North Yorkshire.

  11. Fender Jazz USA 2009. Sunburst + Tort + Rosewood. 3.9kg. With Fender gigbag. £850. This is a really good condition 2009 USA Jazz Bass, aside from a few light dimples/scrapes it's almost showroom condition. Lightweight (3.9kg according to my scales, 3.8kg/8.7lbs according to Bass Direct). With a Fender Tweed gigbag. TI Flats, and Schaller S Locks fitted. Collection from Chichester, or I'm in London a couple of days a week for work. Or could arrange courier (it doesn't have hard case though). See Bass Direct for their professional photos: https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/2009-fender-american-standard-jazz-bass-3-tone-sunburst-pre-owned/

  12. Early 90’s (1992 I think) Ampeg 810E, amazing condition and far too nice to be dragged around the country in the back of a Transit - that honour rests with my other ‘dog of war’ 8x10. Looking at a ‘92 price list these were c.£880 back then. I bought this from its original owner a few months ago - looks all original (rear and side skids added by him), fully functional and is familiarly heavy - happy for potential buyer to test here. £600 or offers can potentially meet for fuel costs etc.

  15. 'Coffee table' basses. I can't explain why but 99% of those exotic wood basses with an 'interesting' grain.....just leave me cold. Also relicing a bass......why pay good money for something I can do myself over a period of time by just playing it? Too weird for me.

  16. This is going to be a long list. Singlecuts that look like a melted plastic toy whale. 38mm nut width. Satin finishes. The fact that virtually all basses have 40mm nuts nowadays as so many are made in the same factory. Cort, Schecter, ESP to name but a few. 3 point bridge. Headless basses. Basswood bodies. Humbuckers in the Musicman positions rather than the normal ones. Fender custom shop (You're not making a Wal. Cut the crap eh?). Warwicks. Mainly for pricing structure and plagiarism. Block markers that are a weird colour or just not white/pearloid/black. Foderas. Sorry, how much for a bass that's more polite and free of personality than my aunt? Dingwalls for the fact that every Nolly wannabe has to have one. Ashdown basses. They're really not great. Cheap tuning pegs. Just why? Oil finishes. It's not a deck chair, get it finished properly. Inaccessible truss rods. Figured necks. Planning on playing with your back to the audience the whole time? No? Well, you've just wasted your money on that roasted flamed maple neck. Logos on the body. If I wanted my bass to look like an advert, I'd put a Marlboro sticker on it just to be difficult. Candy Apple Red. Has anyone ever bought a bass this colour? I certainly don't want to go onstage looking like I'm about to play a stale Braeburn apple. Sparkle finishes. Good luck fixing that when it gets chipped. Racing stripes. Does a Mustang bass go faster? No, it just looks cheap because of it.

  17. I can recommend the Acinonyx “Cat” bass. I love my V1. Don’t be put off by the tone buttons: I find them great when gigging. You get an instant and consistent tone change. Of course, if you don’t like the pre-sets, then it might not be your cup of tea but from my perspective, it beats twiddling knobs. Apart from that, the pickups are great, the whole thing weighs twice nothing and it is so easy to play. Just made for surviving those 3 hour gigs IMO. I was seriously tempted to add a V2 as well but when I heard Nordstrand are working on a 5 string version, I decided to keep my powder dry. It might actually be a 5 string I can play for more than 5 minutes without hand pain (arthritis).

  19. I just ordered a competition blue Mustang.... I'd love to have an original, but one of these will come out at 3,5 to 4,5 times the price of a Vintera. That's a bit too much for my liking. The vintera looks like the next best thing, and will probably have a better fit and finish than the original anyway. Hopefully I can update tomorrow 😙

  28. We had our first proper rehearsal with our new drummer last night. It's coming together but we're still not at the point of being relaxed and riding the groove yet, although this will come. One thing that was really enjoyable was that without our old drummer, who had a very.... robust approach to backing vocals, there was space for myself and one of the guitarists to actually put together some far more enjoyable arrangements together, BV-wise, and they sounded really good. I'm pumped about the band and really enjoying it again. The groove thing will come with familiarity.

  29. I have looked, and found nothing from the modern hymnal that fits. However, I was once in a ukulele band that did a swing version of Tainted Love, and realised that the chord sequence of Tainted Love was the same as that from Seven Nation Army, Stray Cat Strut, and Sweet Dreams Are Made of This. Thus it is my ambition to find a Worship song that uses the same chords. However, I am stuck with playing the bassline to a U2 song, to every worship song written in the past 10 years. So in both cases, I still haven't found what I am looking for.....

  33. Painted necks, relics, stickers, Rick bridges, tort pick guards, plastic knobs, truss rods you have to take the neck off for access. Harley Benton, just the name irritates me! Schaller strap locks. Pickup height screws that don't work properly and get chewed up. Skinny straps, G&L headstocks.

  35. (NOW SOLD) *READY TO GIG* *CAN DELIVER WITH A REASONABLE DISTANCE FROM AYLESBURY EN ROUTE TO WORK* Bought this last year as a temporary until I got my new ACG bass. I got the new bass but still held on to the Aria as a back up and a travel instrument. I also now have an travel bass🫣 So something must give…….. Now it’s time for someone else to put this to playing duties and enjoy😊 Still in very good condition (look at the pics…only one obvious blemish) Now with professional mods read below.👇 Description: *It was a passive bass but I was missing my East UK. active uni-preamp sound and flexibility so I decided to upgrade the electronics and so added an East mid stack and Bass/Treble stack. Quality!! *I also changed the tuners to the better Schallers for more stable tuning. Quality!! *Better quality & longer string tree/post added to cover all the strings. *Shielded the cavity to make it more resistant to hum/buzz. *Japanese high mass brass bridge replaced the lighter original. This tightened up the high end, notably the slap sound (especially with the active electronics). Quality!! * New Overwater brand strings! So now it owes me a bit more than the asking price, which I will not cover but at least get close hopefully. Really good sounding, plays easily, looks great and can be used in most situations! **Collection from Aylesbury unless the buyer willing to cover courier arrangement/cost.** I’m willing to deliver if it coincides with a gig journey or otherwise reasonable. Ask away for any further information…..

  38. The drummer in our band uses a high end E Kit. I generally think it helps FOH in terms of adding some of the sounds required for our set list, but as we don't have the best on stage monitoring I generally find the sound doesn't inspire me on stage as much as an acoustic kit. Also, we've sometimes found when we are playing some rallies/outdoor jobs where the PA etc is provided, that less experienced soundmen can really screw up. Like Nick (Old Horse), at a rally earlier this year one soundman managed to turn off the on stage monitoring of the E Kit and, despite gesticulating frantically he didn't sort the problem until about 4 songs into the set. God knows how we got through that one....

  39. I suspect e-drummers need to learn the same thing we learned a long time ago. What sounds great in their bedroom or headphones doesn't sound good in a band environment. Too much reverb and a smiley EQ? 😆

  41. Currently getting a hankering to look at a EBMM Ray SS but it would mean having to lose one of my current shorties - don't ask but it keeps me out of the divorce courts. Problem is I like all three of my current shorties; the mental G&L Fullerton Fallout, the JMJ Mustang and my Mikey Way Mustang which has done about 300 gigs with me (and looks the part in the Glam Band). First world problems eh?

  42. I will never buy a bass which has the following: - Gibson Three point bridge (okay, I have a Gibson 1974 EB3 I bought over twenty years ago but I wont buy another); - short scale basses (see comment about Gibson EB3 above); - pickup selectors on basses (see comment about Gibson EB3 above); - unbalanced neck heavy basses with strap buttons in the wrong places (see comment about Gibson EB3 above). Damn.

  44. It certainly does, so it must be good, right?? RIGHT! It's fantastic. SO many sounds in one box, it does a really nice warmed up overdrive and gets pretty close to the splattery fuzz of the dedicated fuzz pedal. The LPF is really useful in cutting the top end when you get a bit lairy with the distortion. The phase cancellation switch literally doubles the options. Super pleased... the only issues are that the LED is retina burningly bright, same as my other Valco pedals, but dimmed with a stick on filter thing. The more distorted circuits like Germanium and Silicon need a boost in the output dial or putting it another way the Op-amp and LED modes need backing off, but with so many controls that interact it'll be unlikely that I'd adjust it mid gig. I think I'll keep the fuzz next to it, because together they offer a full gamut of OD/Distortion/Fuzz sounds and it'll be nice to have two flavours on tap.

  45. Tort pickguards. Though I'll make a rare exception if it's a dark tort guard on an Olympic white P with a dark rosewood board, as that can look right somehow. Gold hardware. I'll buy a bass with it, but only if drop-in replacements are available and it's still worth it after I factor in the cost of a complete set of black or chrome. Sunburst finishes. No exceptions. Old basses with 'mojo', or new relic jobs. No exceptions.
