Booked to play outdoors on the Prom at Girvan Beach but Ayrshire's beautiful bank holiday weather meant a late change to indoors. A local youth facility premises with a cosy yet lively atmosphere. Max capacity is 100 souls and it was full. Band mascot Roger approved.11 points

I recently bought a 2011 Overwater Aspiration Elite from franzbassist on here. I was in the market for a nice but inexpensive fretted 5 as a second bass, and this fitted the bill really well. However, I now have more basses than fingers and it’s time to rationalise. So, first of all it's in great condition. I don't think there's a mark on it anywhere. It's a five piece neck through, maple and something walnut-like would be my guess, with what appears to be an ash body capped with a burl maple top. It's 35" scale, so a nice tight B string, and the 19mm spacing at the bridge is great. EQ is a three band Overwater system designed by John East. The control cavity is thoroughly shielded using paint and copper tape. The bridge and pickups are Overwater branded too, but I assume made in Korea along with the bass itself. The standard tuners were mini Gotoh-like ones, but were swapped for Gotoh ResOLites which take the weight to bang on 9 lbs and have sorted the balance. Other than that the bass is stock. Live, the bass is really articulate: every note comes through crisp and clear. Lots of complements for how great it sounds, and how versatile. Happy to ship in the UK for additional cost.10 points

Popped round with Mrs Scrumpy to pick 'yorks5stringer' Keith's stuff up yesterday. Spent a very pleasant hour or so drinking tea with wife Anna and daughter Loren in the garden. Haven't had a proper sort through yet but - apart from the Markbass cab already sold to neepheid, the only items of substance in terms of sales value seem to be a couple of nice gig bags and a mic stand. I'll try and sell those at the Bash and put the rest in the raffle, which Anna has said it's OK to do. Anna has given me some words she'd like shared with the Bashers, which I'll either read out, put on display, or both.9 points

Stumbled on this - Thomas Dolby's the making of SBMWS. I always admired Dolby, and he always seemed like a genuine human being, as well as a fabulous composer. Has a great sense of humour too, IMO6 points

Here we have a Tele bass build I Acquired this beautiful birdseye neck from a fellow Basschatter which is brand new, maker unknow The body I got from a local guy who bought it from guitar build and it had been sprayed green Not a great job on his finishing technique, I rubbed this down and refinished it in Antique white, there is a subtle shade of green showing through but not too noticable and the spray job is decent He made a hash of the string through hole's which I had to cover over with a brass plate, not perfect but it hides the hashed holes he drilled The bridge I have put on it is new but does not match up with the string through holes, if you want to use these then a different bridge will need to be sourced New Hipshot tuners New bloodstone handwound 51-54 Tele pickup New pickguard from WD CTS pots Lovely neck with birdseye front and back, the neck alone cost me £200 and the rest of the parts and body came to over £300, due to the frets needing attention I have set a low asking price The buyer will have to address some fret buzz at the higher end of the fretboard, some of these frets will need dressed and maybe some levelling which I am unable to do Any question's please fire away6 points

I have no shame asking as I'm not that knowledgable and would miss obvious things that other people who know more would immediately spot. In return, I can advise on all sorts of useful things such as public sector procurment, contract law as it pertains to G-Cloud contracts, delivery of complex IT projects, C/Perl programming and Unix kernel development, 3d printing and coaching girls rugby teams. A rich source of information that apparently nobody has any interest in whatsoever Rob5 points

I have a problem... Had an unexpected gear sale, so was debating the cali76 cb or expresses compressors. Decided to take a punt on the completely original Demon FX Call76 first though with the huge price difference! Opinions will be on another thread, but I think it's a keeper!5 points

What this has taught me, is that before I buy, check with people here about their thoughts and also if a guitar price is too good to be true, it may be too good to be true. Rob4 points

Duo gig Sunday afternoon left me with a mild back ache. 3 hours standing playing bass and vocals, with a short break in the middle. 40 songs. I guess I’m getting old. I used to that and more without any problems when I were a younger lad. Great receptive crowd made it for us though.4 points

For sale is my back up amp which has pretty-much been sitting in my cupboard unused for quite a while. My main amp is a Mark Bass Tube 800 and I love Mark Bass gear so wanted to get a similar back up should I ever need it (which I've not). It's a Markbass Ninja 1000, complete with original box and a very well padded messenger bag I've been keeping it in. It is in overall excellent condition (a few small marks) and sounds phenomenal. These will push out 1000w at 4 ohms from what is a very small and light box. Yours for £425 delivered fully insured.3 points

The function band I needed this for is going nowhere so I'm putting this up for sale. It's an immaculate 2021 Sandberg California 2 VM5 in gloss natural with black block inlays (an extra cost option). It's 34" scale and weighs in at near-enough 8lb 5oz! The 2 band eq also allows for a passive bypass and it sounds and plays brilliantly with a lovely low action. It comes with the original Sandberg gigbag, paperwork and Allen keys. It's a real shame to see this go to waste. I'm looking for £1,300 picked up from near Monmouth or happy to travel within an hour's drive. I'll post insured for an extra £30. I'll try and take some more pics soon. No trades thanks.3 points

Bought this a couple of weeks ago on here. Bought some La Bella deep talkin strings for it that are made for a string through Mustang.(original fender flats also included) Great bass. Why am I selling? Well……. It’s become clear that I am a P bass player after selling my P basses for Jazz basses and a Mustang. I’ve seen a P bass I want to get but need to sell either this short scale JMJ Mustang or the White Aerodyne 32” medium scale. Has all the lovely Road wear on it etc, collect from PE27 3FW,can deliver within 20 miles or I can post in a soft gig bag on a fender box.3 points

Lightweight, clean, warm, thick and powerful. Nice condition and excellent working order. Class A/B design. I used this with two Vanderkley EX112 I have two of these amps and have decided to sell this to contribute towards a Mustang bass. Genuine reluctant sale. Welcome to test here in WV14 before potential purchase, you wouldn’t be disappointed, or can ship to an agreed price. Comes with Markbass case/bag Cheers Geoff3 points

It’s becoming clearer that you have two issues to address but only one problem. The first is that nobody can really hear what they are doing and the second is acoustic feedback. The first is caused by too much sound at their ears and the second by too much at the mics. None of this is down to you, they have to change or accept that they can never sound as good as other bands. So addressing the monitoring. They can all hear themselves, if they were at home on their own they’d hear themselves without the PA or the monitors. With what you have they’d probably be deafened. The problem is everyone else being too loud. If everyone else turned down you’d all hear the vocals. It may well be that the guitarist is drowning out his own vocals, but the reality is that with stage monitoring you can’t alll be the loudest sound in a small space. Only one thing can be the loudest sound and the best way of achieving that is to all agree what that is and to turn everything else down. They won’t agree of course and the best you can do is to agree to all be at the same volume. The mantra has to be a consistent ‘you can’t hear, everyone turn down’. Nobody wins a volume war! There is only one way round this. If you can isolate your ears from everyone else’s monitors then you can have what you want. Plug your ears and make a hole you can squirt your own mix in. In-ears it is then. Im seriously concerned for your guitarist, with that level of hearing loss he needs to manage his sound exposure really carefully or his gigging days will be over, and soon. It’s also not fair to the rest of the band for him to expect to be twice as loud as the rest of the band to compensate for his hearing loss. Get him to wear a good fitting set of over ears at rehearsals if you can. It’ll prove that headphones will improve his guitar and singing without impinging upon everyone else, and he’ll be able to hear at levels that won’t make his hearing loss worse. If he doesn’t believe you get him to talk to an audiologist, his remaining hearing is probably already fragile. Im sure we can all give some tips about reducing feedback if you can’t get the so and so’s to turn down but this is long enough ’3 points

I often ask advice here, sometimes by PM to certain people as I like the vintage fenders , there’s some knowledgeable and helpful people here ,I’ve met quite a few, and also they might see something that I’ve missed, which is easily done3 points

Added a second short scale to the collection, next to the Mustang. I've always wanted a Höfner Club and finally pulled the trigger on an Ignition SE. I have considered the Contemporary but I wanted a full hollow Club I'm really really surprised by the quality, actually. The finish is immaculate, the frets are really good and it sounds great. I did put some Labella flats on it.3 points

Cheers all. I should’ve checked it properly before parting with £900. Anyways 3 hour trip later. I got my money back and very apologetic dude. He might’ve been playing me but felt genuine- I think he got ripped off first thanks everyone- kebab and wine waiting. Now on look out for genuine RW or might go 60th anniversary but don’t like pau ferro if anyone has a bass like this - talk to me I’ve got some cash!! love BCers are the best3 points

The drummer (Robin) used to dep with the band I played in. Last saw him at a pub in Bognor Regis. He used his dad's car. I was a bit stunned to learn of their success Stateside. He is/was a very fine drummer and obsessed with Dave Weckl.2 points

There is a bass that I NEED to buy, so trying to raise some cash quickly. This has been my backup amp for ages, so it hasn't seen much use recently. I had it serviced at Axe Management guitars in Edinburgh a few months back, so it's working well, but the blue LEDs in the little glass window at the front don't work. All the important LEDs do work. The original carry bag is in decent condition. I've resisted selling this as I love the sound, but I use my Magellan 800 all the time now and it is more versatile. Not sure how much postage will be, but happy to arrange something in the uk. Not looking for trades, but could be tempted by a 3 Leaf Doom. Open to offers, particularly if it's collected in person in Edinburgh.2 points

I had a play on one of the 70's Tele Basses in Surf Green yesterday and loved it. The one I tried only weighed 8 1/2lb which for a slab body is a good weight in my eyes. The neck was lovely and it had been set up with a nice low action. The whole bass was put together really well. Sound-wise it's a lot more versatile than I thought, especially if you vary right hand position and playing where I usually play (mid-way between bridge and the start of the neck) and with tone on full reminded me very much of a 4003 neck pickup which someone else in this thread alluded to. It's a sound I love: deep and slightly "fizzy" and just the right side of warm before moving in to a bit too warm for me. Definitely a 70's sounding vibe from the music I love.2 points

Not parasites but symbiotes. Including the poor suckers that run open mics. I've never really understood the world in which some musicians look down upon others, I've generally found it rare amongst musicians, most of the ones I know are supportive of everyone who gives it a go from encouraging a 12 year old with a mobile phone singing Karaoke through to my opera singing friend who encourages my appalling backing vocals. I have a friend who runs an open mic dedicated to people who write their own songs. Thanks to his enthusiasm I've heard the first stumblings of a teenager singing to two chords and seen him take them through to BBC introducing, is that a parasite? I've run my own open mic and given bands their first chance to try out in front of an audience or to use a decent PA, encouraged people who gave up with stage fright to give it another go in later life. Does it worry me that most of the songs were written by people who are absent and don't even know we exist? The unusual state of affairs is the monetisation of music, copyright, ownership and monopoly. Music was passed on orally for centuries in written history and for millennia before writing existed in all probability. My mother and her sister used to buy sheet music from Tin-Pan Alley and sing round a piano. All covers. Music has given people pleasure and served a social function throughout history and it arises out of a community. Everyone starts somewhere with almost zero skills, some fly and others just manage but the impulse to share or just join in is strong and it is what keeps music alive. I'll bet most people here started to learn bass by copying someone else's songs. No original music is born of ignorance, at the very least it is inspired by absorbing all the music around us. There would have been no Rolling Stones or Beatles without Rock and Roll covers, no rock and roll without the blues and gospel musicians and no blues without the African slaves. Can you imagine the cost of instruments if only a few elite musicians bought them? Would there have been a Fender or Gibson and electric pickups without the amateur enthusiasm for playing Hawaiian guitar? A network of studio's and rehearsal rooms without amateurs and semi pro's paying for them. Music is deeply embedded in our society and is the better for it and the broader the base the better for all of us. The world is a better place for having covers bands and for people making up playlists for others to have a good party and I'm in awe of anyone who attempts to make s song for other people. Luckily there aren't many here looking down their noses at other peoples music, there is room for all of us.2 points

That doesn't look like an official roadworn to me, sorry. The ones I've seen certainly don't have "craters" like that where the paint wear is. I'd say that's been (and I'm being polite), f*cked around with by someone at home. Possibly Stevie Wonder?2 points

I would say that you've been done.... looks like a belt sander job on a normal Mexican Jazz to me. Could do with some more and better pictures of the whole bass though.2 points

My current board… Buffer/ Tuner/ Mute at the front (with mutable parallel dry signal from the parallel output of the Paradriver) … Then stackable gain stages, Overdrive > Fuzz > Distortion (this board is all about the dirt really) … A touch of space (reverb) … Compression at minimal settings (only bites when digging clean and the dirt isn’t doing the compression) … End of chain EQ/ HPF/ LPF/ DI from the Q strip. This is essentially an ‘ampless’ set up. The front of chain dry parallel signal and end of chain DI both go to the desk, the other end of chain output for additional monitor (power amp/ cabs) if necessary.2 points
