I purchased a 1978 BB2000 last week. I'm still getting used to it (and to playing round wounds as I've been on tapes/flats on all my basses for years) - but it is rather nice. It sustains longer than any bass I've ever played, but also has more clarity than my (Indonesian, bolt-on) BB425. I've always fancied a neck-through Yamaha - and when I played this one it was hard to say no! I know such a post needs photos, so here goes... Phil12 points

Been lurking around the internet trying to find one of these, my first non-budget bass purchase, after much googling and research I had decided a Sabre seemed to be a perfect match for all my wants (looks, the sound etc), I was particularly taken with the videos made by Lobster on the Sabre I wrote to Musicman and asked if they would be re-issuing the Sabre again and they replied saying "no immediate plan to reintroduce the EBMM Sabre" The bass, manufactured May 8th 2013 according to serial number, had been bought new by the owner and stored immediately and still had the shop tags, plastic wrap and stickers on when I picked it up for the first time, the strings had corrosion on them making it a bit unpleasant to play but were replaced by the seller with some nice zingy nickel ones. The seller is a professional musician and a big Stingray fan, he let me look at / try his Stingrays and tbh this has changed my pre-conceived ideas about Stingrays - was particularly taken with a blue 90's stingray he had, added to my bucket list for the future 😀 Its still early days for me and I am still getting used to the pre-amp and options, but I think its a keeper! Up for sale is my Yamaha BB P34. It’s definitely up there as one of the very best basses I’ve owned and it’s acknowledged by many as one of the finest passive instruments money can by. The condition is very good although there are a few minor playing related scuffs here and there but nothing that’s easy to photograph. There is a very tiny ding by the bridge which I have tried to capture but you need the right light to be able to see it. The bass plays superbly and sounds wonderful and has been fitted with new DR strings recently. It comes in a very sturdy hard case which has hardly been out of the house. I’m not looking for any trades as I am looking to purchase a different bass to satisfy my desire to try a multiscale instrument. £895 is a little more than half price but please feel free to send me any sensible and fair offers. If you are looking to buy a passive 4 string that isn’t the obvious brand then it’s hard to see how you can improve on the Yamaha. I am based in Wigan and would prefer any potential buyer to collect but I am also happy to meet up somewhere to facilitate a deal. If you have any questions please do let me know.6 points

For sale, Warwick Rockbass Star Bass 4 String, cream with black go-faster stripes. 32" scale. Excellent conditon throughout. Comes with Warwick gig bag. Very slim, comfortable neck. Highly versatile tone from 2 MEC pickups. I bought this on here during the Covid crisis and I've been very pleased with it whenever I've had a chance to use it. This is a really nice bass but I now really need to thin down my collection to a few essential instruments. Local pickup preferred but can ship at buyers expense to UK only. For sale elsewhere but cheaper here. Here's some online blurb; The Warwick Star is an elegant-looking instrument with some tasteful vintage-style touches. Featuring a large semi-hollow body constructed from Laminated Maple; Star basses typically have a bright and airy tone, which is accentuated even more so by their set Maple necks. To add some essential warmth, Warwick Star basses feature Rosewood fingerboards; offering a smooth feel under the fingers. Unlike most of their counterparts in the Warwick range, Star basses have all-passive circuitry. This ensures an earthy, old-school sound that’ll sit well in any jazz or classic rock mix. Although they might look like humbuckers, these basses are actually fitted with pairs of single-coil pickups. Pumping out a lot of focused mid-range, you can easily tame the sound of these pickups via their independent volume and tone controls.5 points

Monthly Bandeoke slot last night. The woman who organises and runs it was ill so we relied on the regular punters knowing the score and the landlady running around encouraging other folk to get up. It wasn't a total disaster. I played through the souped up TC Electronic 2x8 bought from @Stealthof this parish. He'd basically put in more powerful speakers which turned the cab into a 4ohm mini monster. People who've heard me play through every rig imaginable in previous months, came up afterwards to tell me it was the best sound I'd ever had. I said I was concerned a 250 watt amp might not cut it in such a big room but was told you could feel the bass in your chest right to the back. So my small rig solution is sorted!5 points

Tom doesn't like people to gush about him and his brilliant teaching which makes it difficult to write an honest review of his lessons. Because the desire to gush is almost overwhelming. I came to Tom as a bass player with many years of experience across many genres and at many levels. In other words I had decades of bad habits and inadequate knowledge ingrained in me. You'd never have imagined what an uphill task he faced in attempting to undo all this, because his manner was always cheerful, open and friendly. He appeared to actually enjoy trying to educate this very old dog. I'm now entering my fifth block of lessons (six lessons per block) and the transformation in my understanding of my instrument, my style of play and my ability to read and write music is little short of miraculous. Tom understands what makes me tick as a person and communicates with such precision, humility and skill that he makes the learning fun and the progression seamless. Don't come to him for a quick fix or to learn shortcuts. The Kendrick Method is all about the steady drip feed of knowledge which builds inexorably to a lasting improvement in all aspects of playing the bass. I cannot recommend him highly enough.4 points

I had a set of Fender flats on a PBass (think they were the 50s?) and thought they were quite high tension. I don't have any exact info on tension, but my finger tips on my right hand would hurt after a 3hr practice. I now use TI Jazz flats anytime I want flats and find them much easier on the fingers.4 points

Made a few changes since the last time I posted. I've swapped out the TC flashback for the Solidgoldfx EM-iii delay, which has a high pass filter and a feedback function. I've also swapped the Tru-fi Super Fuzz for the Colordriver. The main addition is the Noble Preamp that arrived on Wednesday. It's a tight squeeze! And it has to go upside down! But it sounds amazing (as expected) and means I can go full in-ears if need be (when the short XLR I ordered shows up).3 points

Hi, and welcome to Basschat. 🙂 There's lots of ways to achieve a decent silent practice set up. Personally I use a cheap, old multi effect pedal (Line6 Pod). Runs on mains, bass and phone in, headphones out. Lots of effects and amp sims to play along with whatever you stream from your phone. It can be as cheap or expensive as you like.3 points

I don't think there was 'one' bass, per se as it depends on the genre of music. For me, it would be Jazz Bass and Ampeg/Ashdown amps, due to the indie revival 2003-2008. Hundreds of bands displaying Skinny jeans, waistcoats, curly hair and a Jazz bass under the chin. SVT or ABM in tow! On the Oxford scene around this time, 9/10 bass players in bands playing heavy music, were using an Ibanez SR of some description, fwiw. Incidentally, to me, Warwick Streamers are totally the 90s bass - thanks to Stuart Zender primarily.3 points

A couple of things come to mind. Firstly, what amp and headphones have you been using? When you say it sounds horrendous, why is that? Is it because it’s distorted, or perhaps not loud enough? It seems a bit odd that they don’t play nicely together but It could be an issue with the an impedance mismatch between the amp output and the headphones. Can you try borrowing some other headphones to see if that solves the issue? Alternatively, the jack plug adapter you’re using could be faulty, I’ve had a dodgy one before but a few quid could fix the problem if that’s the case. Secondly, you mention the Vox Amplug and worry that it’s battery powered. The batteries do actually last a reasonable time. However, the Amplug is a bit basic and limited in capability. They’re currently £38 on Amazon but for £58 you can get a Nu-X Mighty Plug which is like the Amplug on steroids. It’s rechargeable via USB and has built in effects and a good selection of drum loops. To get the most out of it it needs to be used with the accompanying free smartphone app which connects via Bluetooth to allow control all the settings and also stream backing tracks to play along to. Because the only cable is from the plug (in the bass) to the headphones, it allows you freedom to move around and not be tied to other devices on the floor. Good value IMHO. As others have mentioned the Boss Waza Air is like the Rolls Royce of headphone systems but at around £350 a tad expensive.2 points

If you practice amp sounds ok through the speaker, it sounds like your headphones are not up to it. There's another post on the headphone subject and ones that come out well are Sennhieser HD206 @ £20. I'd be inclined to go this route first as the headphones are great and it might be worth trying this first as it's minimal outlay.2 points

Hi Rick … between Telford and Stafford here are a couple pics to prove my ‘gearitus’ affliction! The red bass is a Mayones Jabba … only had it a couple of weeks. I also have a Mexican fender jazz bass player series. The Sadowsky is a Ltd Edition Metroline. So much lighter than the other 2. The cab is one of those super light GR AT208’s. my investment in gear is way beyond my ability but I just love learning on great quality product and I’ve always loved the instrument. If anything isn’t sounding good … it’s definitely me!2 points

You don't need to VPN. Your best option is Ishibashi's U-Box where they list all their second-hand stock. Here's a handy link to the bass guitar section. The other option is Digimart, which is appears to show the stock from all the Japanese musical instrument stores with an on-line presence. And here's a Jupiter Bass for sale that is very similar to the one in your OP Be aware that some Japanese shops simply will not deal with sales outside of Japan even on-line ones, and the only way I have found to get around this is to have someone in Japan who is willing to buy the instrument for you and then organise the shipping. This is why Ishibashi are your best bet because they are one of the few music stores prepared to deal with foreign sales. The only downside is the time difference between Japan and wherever you are combined with the fact that all the instruments sold are also on display in one of their shops, that by the time you have made your initial enquiry the instrument in question may well have already been sold. Good luck.2 points

Thanks Dave, The punch comes from the active pre amp on my 1991 G&L ASAT Bass. I just use my GK 1001rb head for volume only. That's a 2 10 RBX cab from GK ( weighs a cubic ton ). Daryl2 points
