Made in Japan, 2014. One of the nicest necks, fast and slim with vintage radius fret board in a lovely dark rosewood. The body is carved and the bass is well weighted, very light and comfortable. These models were made for the Japanese market and so are fairly rare, this one is antique white in colour. The are a few minor dings and blemishes, nothing major or very noticeable and only what you might expect from a well used, but looked after 8 year old instrument.8 points -

Hi all, This is a much loved and gorgeous instrument which I've had for over 10 years. Sounds totally ace. Maple neck and fingerboard. It's had some upgrades: US Bartolini NTMB 918F preamp Nordstand Fat Stacks pickups - which are lovely in both humbucking and single coil modes Tortoise shell pickguard from Jeanies - the people who make them for Lakland USA black Hipshot Ultralite Tuners Black string tree Black Schaller strap locks and metal knobs Push pull knob for passive / active mode. A light scuff to the upper horn (see photo) The little plastic catch bit for the battery compartment at the back has come off (see photo) - I use a house key to open it. It stays shut and works fine. ----- Extras: The strings on it are new but not the greatest, so will include a brand new set of Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt which I love. And a new 9V battery. And new soft case - very light but good enough to carry it home in : ) I'm based in Liverpool and still a bit nervous about shipping but open to it. If you can make it to mine, you're of course welcome to try it through a couple of different amps/cabs (Aguilar, EBS, Acoustic Image). Any questions, just let me know. Many thanks6 points -

OK! Here's the bad news. Prices for CHB-1 and CHB-2 basses are increasing from £500 (Made in India) to £895 (Made in the UK). Here's the good news. MASSIVE bump in quality. Here we have an original 1973 Fender Precison body in Candy Apple Red, heavy relic beauty coupled with a stunner of a Lakland J neck bought from @Quatschmacherof this very parish. The engine room consists of a Nate Mendel P bass loom and Lindy Fralin 10% overwound pick ups. Bridge is original to the bass. The original P was parted out by a guy in the states, shame as I would’ve bought it complete but was too late. I do have pictures of the original bass to confirm this. Rescued from a local studio… The headstock had met an accident. The body though was unscathed. I bought it from the original owner as I’ve always fancied one…then set about buying a really decent neck to make it a solid bass again. Brand new Roasted Maple Fender, which feels amazing and is snappy as hell and skinny…I then realised the boffins at fender had made the headstock holes too small for the original fender tuners. So I bought a set of Hipshot licensed 1/2” diameter machine-heads which are ace. the body itself is a satin black - sometimes looks Smokey grey and then totally black…has some shinier areas - suppose that’s the nature of matte black. plays well/sounds great - needs a last fettle on the nut - i can’t find my nut files and don’t want to bodge - but with commitments to family/house - can’t get to local luthier for weeks. The supplied nut was only guide grooved and I have E/A just about right but nothing slim enough for D/G so white it’s playable it could just be inched better. This is the Mk2 version and has rotary selector/volume/volume/tone and an edge socket. The selector has 4 positions which mix all of the coils in various combinations 2 warmer/vintage and 2 bright - slappers delight. you can then blend/vary as you wish. high mass fender bridge and a decent weight - about 9lbs. Fender bag included. Original neck and tuners included. The neck is split across the headstock and I’ve glued and clamped it but it’s done - in all fairness. Shipping can happen in UK. £25 uninsured/more if insured. Can do a hiscox case for shipping which will change the end price. I’m not after trades - I’ve got a full rack and full cases. So need to slim down the stuff. I’d be keeping it, but about 2 days after bringing it home, I bought my old Musicman Bongo back which does the HH thing wonderfully and a couple of J types I have sentimental connections with. So - a massively tweaked modern classic. I’m in Manchester and collection (evenings and weekends) possible… Thanks Andy5 points -

For anyone with an orange Bongo, the pg on mine is an OE one, back in the days when they offered a lot of variants - the swirls are orange and black - called tiramisu, I think they’re still available from Chandler (Pickguard Planet) in the US - they are EBMM’s supplier - must get a new black one for my Sabre - current one is heavily scuffed from use!!! PS you can get cheap Stingray pgs on the internet but judging by the standard of a white pearl one that came on a used 1993 Blueburst Stingray I bought (the pg delaminated within a few months) it’s worth paying the extra for a decent one IMHO.4 points

Thank you chaps! Appreciated! It is a bit galling, but needs must, I'm just contenting myself knowing that I'll get back on the Mesa train later this year all being well. They simply make the best amps. To me, the M-pulse is as near damnit to a tube sound as you're ever going to get from a hybrid amp. It's 'that' close. When I get the 5 string, I'll be sure to clobber the singer around the head with it for making me do this.4 points -

I think you have accomplished more than you will perhaps, at the moment anyway, realise. Many years ago, 1965 to be precise, I was 9 years old and the only one of a group of pals who didn’t have a bike. As with most families, money was tight and there wasn’t any likelihood of me getting one any time soon. Without letting on to me, my dad, my pop, uncles and so on had scavenged around for bicycle parts; frame, wheels etc. My dad worked away from home at this time, leaving early Monday and returning late on Friday. Sunday night I was packed off to bed and my dad secretly set about assembling this bike. Goodness knows what time he got finished. I got up for school the next day; he had already left for his train, and I found this bike sitting in the kitchen. I’ve never forgotten that moment: “My dad made that for me”. It took many years for the deeper significance to become apparent, but at that point, the moment was enough. I hope in the years ahead, your son will carry with him a similar cherished moment. I've had this lovely Honeyburst Star Bass for a couple of years and it rarely gets used despite being a great player( due to my Telecaster Bass having its 50th Birthday run-out in 2022). These Pro Series MIK were the ones to have and strung with Flats it has a full 34" neck (unlike the more recent and hugely inferior Chinese versions) and comes complete with a lush Warwick Rockbag case. The top and back are gorgeous flamed maple and it is in excellent condition and has no issues for a 10 year old bass.The neck is straight, has no dinks and the action is low. The previous careful owner upgraded the Justa-nut to V3 I believe. It will also be supplied with the Warwick User Kit which includes manual, warranty documents, straplocks, polishing cloth and truss rod adjuster, all in its own little Warwick soft case!3 points -
Light the blue touch paper and retire eh? I suspect all Barefaced are trying to do is to protect the horn drivers from their customers so they don't have too may repair claims from crazy amp mis-matching. Playing with a heavily distorted sound passes much more energy to the horn so Barefaced seem to use OEM Eminence drivers. Nice speakers but still subject to the laws of physics. The driver is rated at 250W as the result of a test where filtered noise is driven through a sample speaker for hours at 250W. If it can take the heat it passes. That doesn't mean it can handle all the power at all the frequencies. For the bottom octave of a 4 string I doubt that there are many (any?) 10" speakers that could handle 250W and indeed Eminence state that their 250W Neo bass speaker should be de-rated below 80Hz in a medium sized box. That's because those power levels at low frequencies ask the cone and coil to move beyond their excursion limits. Let's be fair about this, giving advice on reasonable use isn't simple for any manufacturer as you have no idea what a customer is going to do with the speaker. Since the amp is only rarely going to get anywhere near it's peak output which will only be for a fraction of a second the heating limit of the speaker will rarely if ever be reached. Fortunately most bass guitars don't pump out much fundamental so the excursion limits are rarely breached. Bass guitars don't have a lot of top end to trouble the horn driver either so you can usually get away with an amp which is higher rated than the speaker. Obviously the seller has to balance the extra sales appeal of calling their speaker 500W against the chance of somebody actually doing that and making the speaker fart out by boosting the bass or blowing the tweeter with lots of distortion and having to deal with returns and a reputation for failures. The clincher is usually that you can't sell your speaker if you don't make the same claims as your rivals so in the end they all give in to over-claiming3 points

I just tried a variety of Sandbergs. After trying both the TM and the TT the sound I ended liking the most was the TT in passive mode. The TM was a cool slightly different sound too. So I guess a passive TT 4 or 5 string is in my near future. All the Sandbergs I played had amazing quality and feel, I can’t believe I didn’t try them before.3 points

I just swapped over to the Lusithand pre, the Double NFP. I'll give some first impressions. The controls are volume, LPF front pickup with a pull switch to activate a resonance boost, LPF pickup rear pickup with pull switch for resonance boost, and pickup blend. Because of how small my test bed control cavity is, it has needed some creative positioning, so the volume knob is nearest the output jack and the blend the control nearest the fretboard. It works fine for a test. (The blend knob works the opposite way around to that on the ACG - that's messing with me, but of course it works the same way that it does on the Wal preamp. ) My first impression is...it sounds fab. This is exactly what I was looking for. It has to be adding harmonic distortion, because the system sounds 'gnarlier'. It's not that it doesn't sound clean, but it's not pristine. When I dig in now, there's a lot more grit out of it. The ACG/East system has been commented previously to be very clean, and it is. It's a beautiful sounding preamp. It also goes lower in terms of the LPF knob frequency; the Lusithand cuts off a higher. The difference is quite noticeable. I do miss the ability to blend back in the treble, as found on the ACG, or the 'pick attack' bump that is on the Wal. I do think Nuno should consider this. I will tell him. But overall my first impression is that it sounds really really good. I hope it comes through in recordings, which I will sort as soon as I can. I think we may have solved the 'grit'/preamp side of things. The test bed doesn't have the mid bump/compressed 'push' to the mids yet of the Wal basses, but it really is sounding a lot closer overall. I am really pleased.3 points

In my 20s played in a few rock bands to semi-interested pub crowds that just used to stand there nursing their pints. Often they were just indifferent and unresponsive so I jacked that in. Said to myself, sod that for a game of soldiers and then only joined bands that played music for the dancefloor, mostly at weddings and small festivals. Much more enjoyable as we managed to get people up out of their seats and strut their stuff. The vibes were generally more like parties than gigs.2 points

I love being involved in any type of live performance, whether it be playing, acting, or running tech stuff. There's an immediacy to it which I find really addictive. Still, I know it's not for everyone and it's all good as long as everyone's enjoying what they choose to do.2 points

Love gigging. Without that, to my mind, there is not much point. I know lots of musicians who don't gig and I can't fathom it at all. To me, it is a vibrant social life that actually brings in money instead of costing it. I meet lovely people, share a love for the music and have a laugh. Sometimes it is exceptional for some reason but mostly it is just plain old brilliant.2 points

We had our (much more humble than previous posts) 2nd gig in the 2 years since we formed. Thanks to covid. We organised it ourselves in the village hall, about 100 people where we've put on loads of other local bands before. Cracking night. The singers dress strap snapped, so spent half the set trying to prevent a serious "fall out". And the foldback decided to go AWAL. But the audience was well up for a night out with much dancing and even 2 encores. Great to be back out. Roll on the next one. Good to see others gigging again after such a difficult period.2 points

I like using a DAW for practice. It means I don't need an amp or effects, I just plug straight in to an interface box (Scarlet DI2 £70ish) and then use Reaper (free trial that never ends but its only $60 USD anyway) on my PC which allows me to drop in mp3's and then set up loops or slow the track without effecting frequencies. I've downloaded loads of free plugins such as amp sims and effects and cab sims.2 points

I might be alone in this, but would you also consider adding full size ‘fender’/elephant ear/paddle tuners? I’ve always felt that Y tuners make hollow body basses look a bit…..not quite right, they’re not of the right time/vibe imo. Si2 points

2017 Fender Classic Series P-Bass. Selling as in dire need of a 5-string bass due to joining a band that play EVERYTHING a tone or two lower! 😆 Made in Mexico from the highly regarded Classic Series, where build quality, weight and specs were 'often' matching and surpassing stuff made in the USA. Fiesta red with Gold anodized pickguard. One piece Maple neck. Alder body 7.25 inch radius neck USA standard pickup (these were stock). Poly finish. 50's spec nut width - 1.75inch Vintage style reverse tuners Vintage grooved saddles. Weight wise, I haven't had a chance to weigh yet, but it's is on the light side of the spectrum - Sub 9lbs easily. In unmarked condition aside from a nick in the poly lacquer on the forearm bout. Resonant body and vintage P-Bass tone in spades. The tone control has a very wide range/sweep of sounds from balls out, angry punk to dub tones. Pickup or meet up only (happy to travel a large radius to myself here (Moreton in Marsh) on the Warwickshire/ Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire border. No shipping. No trades or offers please. I've seen various ones on Thomann for around £30-80, and which include a bass stand. For those standing, a quick but deceptively taxing exercise called the plank is useful for strengthening core muscles, which in turn help to take the pressure off of your back.2 points
