I've promised him a Sansamp

I used to have a bass that I put a Seymour Duncan pickup in. I sold the bass but kept the Seymour Duncan. Can anyone identify the bass from a picture of the SD pickup? I don't have a picture of the pickup BTW.

Like most here I've had many Fenders and Fender like basses but failed to some degree to get on with them. I like a wide nut so Jazz necks fail to inspire me but I do like a J pickup sound especially when an active pre is involved. P basses are my favourite, simple, passive and with a good size nut. Unfortunately again I've never quite found the 'perfect' bass. I usually get bored and sell them on. Over the past 3 years I have been using a pimped Jack Casady with Mama pickup and simplified wiring, just a tone and volume. Strung with Rotosound Flats. This has been my only bass for playing chilled laid back cover stuff. Over the past 3 months I've been on the look out for a second bass looking at P, J and everything in-between. Last week I took the plunge on an Ashdown Arc thinking if I don't like it I can send it back. Well... I was not expecting the bass that came. Build quality is up there with the best. Ive searched all over the bass for imperfections or quality control issues. There are none. It's light weight body is perfectly shaped with a neck that plays wonderful for me. It's the perfect dimension for my playing style. Pickups sound as there should... Like a P bass and I have no inclination to swap them out. Tone and volume controls have some resistance and provide a positive response when turned. I hate loose knobs. I've put on Rotosound 45s which really suit this bass. Action is 1.5mm at the 17th fret. Nice and low for my soft playing style. As you can tell I'm impressed...👍

Well, he does shepherd a lot of new people into the arms of BC. It's quite evident by now that @Kiwi and @ped must be paying him large sums for keeping up the good work. My guess: £30 per head. 😁

Just found this thread after a long time off the site so I thought I'd share my pair of Ibanez basses, my long serving SR600 and my much more recent EHB1505ms. Having never played a multi-scale before I was a bit apprehensive about the EHB but I adjusted almost instantly and its slight shorter scale of 35"-33" suited me perfectly!

Someone posted this on p7 of the TB thread. Matches Brother Bubba's description perfectly, even down to the uncontoured slab body. Neck construction & trc shape tell me this is a mid/late 70s Korean cheapo. These 8-pole pickups turn up on some MIK basses, they're either licensed Maxons or copies - most likely licensed, based on the close links between the Japanese & Korean industries at the time. The main difference between these & the MIJ units is that they are very hot, typically 11-12k, as opposed to the 6 or 7 the branded Maxons read. So no, I don't think it's a wind-up, Bubba's just a bit, erm, confused and needy.

Musik-Produktiv have been having an Ashdown clearance for a couple of months I think. My mate got a really good deal on a Rootmaster head (sold out now) and I was looking at a 300 watt OriginAL head for under £200! Enjoy your new cab - you definitely got a bargain 😃

Well I'm going to add another bass to my very short never sell list (along with my old P Bass). It's my 4003S, which I've not had too long but the circumstances in which I purchased it are very special to me and having spent the weekend playing it learning some new songs it's sublime. I changed the original white plastic for black and I've strung it with TI Roundwounds, so it's not quite stock. It plays beautifully and has that gorgeous "fizzy" Ric sound. I've got nine basses in total and this is one of only two I'll never part with, alongside my Martin D-18

It begins... started thicknessing the cherry for the body. Unfortunately it's too wide to go through my planer thicknesser - scrub plane and elbow grease it is!

I have so many beautiful memories from the little pubs of Lancaster (UK) where he played with the local trad' jazz bands. Eventually he started his own band here in Lancaster called Quay Change. They peddled "modern?" jazz to the local area - weddings, university balls, and such like etc. He is perhaps best-known for his book Electric Bass Guitar, The Complete Guide which has had various titles and versions since it's inception around 1974. There was also a significant stint as lecturer(?) of bass guitar at Goldsmiths. He took over this post from Mo Foster! He taught me how to play bass guitar from about 12 years old. I remember long lessons spent on the correct pressure to apply to the strings. Unfortunately, he has mid-to-late Dementia. He still remembers significant amounts of his life however he suffers delusions and logic completely escapes him. He is in an a sad situation but the fact he can remember his life makes it all the more important that I gather stories sooner rather than later. I am looking for anyone who may know anything about him. You may have been his private pupil. You may have found his book and found it to be advantageous? You may have played gigs with him in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s or 10s and have something you remember about him? I am ultimately looking for the bass communities' experience of my dad. I'd love to see stories, photographs, videos or simply a memory of the way he was way back when. I'll be seeing him tomorrow. We'll probably talk about coffee and music, as we always do.

I wanted a small cab to go with my tiny Gallien-Krueger MB200 head. Of course, I would have liked a Barefaced or a Phil Jones but, funds being what they were, I eventually opted for an Ashdown OR-110. Some of the usual suspects had this for around £280 or so (e.g. PMT £285) and it's listed on the Ashdown site at £295, but I found it on Musik-Produktiv in Germany at £169, including VAT and customs charges. It arrived today and it's clearly the same product... or am I missing something? Any ideas?

I wouldn't be too sure about that. Burning up a cab is usually user error, even if it is initiated by unrealistic marketing expectations and a lack of background knowledge. When you turn up and it doesn't get louder you should turn it down some. If you don't it will heat up and can burn up if you lay into the bass for too long. If it ever seems quieter but you turn up some more that is when you burn it. The getting quieter is the driver motor getting hot and increasing resistance. Turning up instead of down makes a runaway condition where the increased voltage makes it hotter still and soon it is very very quiet. Ratings are only a very rough guide to selection for purpose.

So after several years i've looking and just missing out, this is exactly what has happened. I was browsing eBay new listings Friday PM, scroll scroll boring boring.... scroll..... OMG 🥴 Contacted the seller and we made a good deal, i'm very happy with the price. The irony is that not a a couple of hours earlier i'd broke my challenge accidentally winning a local Vintage VJ74 on eBay, which I had no intention of winning but put in such a low price I wasn't worried, yet it's here now. It's actually pretty decent, not sure what i'm going to do with it yet, though. The Myung is expected Tue/Wed.

Hey all, happy weekend! The feedback here has been great and thanks for all your input as it's really helped shape my thinking. I guess my thoughts have evolved since I started this thread. I started as " I want a Deaky bass, how should I do it?". But now I've bought this Highway One and so my thoughts are, " How best to turn this Fender Bass into a Deakey Bass?" I guess I'm now focussed on customising a John Deacon spec Fender P rather than trying to do a 'bitsa' (I mean absolutely no disrespect or snobbery towards bitsas whatsoever because ...uh oh I'm explaining which means I'm digging a hole)- right, I just want to do what I want to do which is take my newly acquired Fender Highway One Precision and customise it to be THAT bass. So I think there are some things I could do cheaper and some things I will decide to throw cash at. Don't know how that will shape up but will continue to seek help along the way. Later dudes. C.

Well imo, you don’t know if your going to get on with a bass until you live with it for a while, if you buy or trade sensibly you can always move it on without too much if any loss , if you don’t try you’ll never know 🙂
