After a driver replacement on the Schroeder I decided to try this mongrel pairing. Works really well and way louder than what you’d expect from 30w. Not the prettiest set up , but if it works it works .8 points

Finally got to take some gear out for a couple of days of rehearsing with some bands. Damn this set up works so well; surprisingly loud and full.6 points

Red all night tonight - was due new strings for 5 basses and “next day” obviously means “not within 3 days…” but it seems the strings I kept as spares to put on the red one still had enough snap for one rehearsal…5 points

Yes, units manufactured. I mentioned this because these sorts of issues tend to show themselves after many speakers are out in the field used in a variety of applications. Same sort of thing often occurs with fatigue related reliability issues, which is one reason why more comprehensive modeling and aging analysis is done in higher volume commercial products (especially if a long warranty is offered). I thought that some folks here might be interested in the information I provided, if I was wrong then I’m sorry for wasting my time.5 points

Better photo tonight. Weird room - for live tracking drums so was acoustically a bit odd…4 points

Came across this and thought it was very nice. Both the bass and the playing were exceptional.4 points

If you know your Motörhead lyrics and Lemmy’s play on words it’s not in bad taste imho. 😊👍4 points

My cousin was born and raised in Houston, Texas. In '83 Eliminator came out and it was also her first trip over to see the UK family. As a 10yr old boy she introduced me to a couple of bands, one of whom was ZZ Top. Eliminator had just come out and they were yet to break in the UK - certainly my family hadn't heard of them, not that we were any sort of barometer of cool. I played that album to death and bought the earlier records and some of the later ones subsequently. When we took her to get her returning flight, we bumped into one of the band at the airport (I couldn't tell you if it was Billy or Dusty - I was 10 and it was the first celebrity I'd seen in person). My cousin shared the flight with the band and met them for photos / autographs afterwards. Being a three piece I was fascinated that one was credited with bass guitar and one was credited with lead guitar. It was probably through them that I learnt the difference. Years later Dusty sent himself up beautifully in King of the Hill. I always thought they were classy guys. Maybe not a band that stayed at the forefront of my tastes but certainly one who helped steer and shape things for me. RIP Dusty.4 points

Man, I really thought Nirvana came up with that song. Turns out it is just a cover song 😞3 points

Got confirmation from EBMM. Order went through and will be shipped either today or early next week. Cool stuff 😍3 points

Agree, maybe someone should ask Rick Beato to analyse the song as part of a new series: "What makes this song awful?" 😉3 points

I'm a big fan of the FEA compressor (which is why I already have one so won't be buying this one - but good luck with the sale!), un-obtrusive compression that makes everything a bit more even and punchy while somehow simultaneously adding a nice slightly softened/vintage tone, and there's nothing else I'm aware of with a separate footswitch for the sidechain compression - that's something I use a lot for things like playing Dub/Reggae and wanting to leave the Bass less compressed but then when switching to playing with an envelope filter that needs the Bass more compressed the sidechain compression can be clicked off.3 points

I change them to flats when I first buy a bass, and if I sell a bass I put the original set back on so I can use the flats on something else.3 points

Just owned a USA Sterling for a short while and sold it to help out another bass player after one. After a number of years not owning one, it was noticeable to me just how ridiculously good they are. The neck and tone, the ergonomics and the playability were just fantastic. I’m GASsing hard for another one.2 points

Port placement doesn't matter, as the radiation pattern from a port is 360 degrees. What does matter is the size of the enclosure. Larger enclosures go lower and louder. In most cases the reason for putting ports on the back is that the enclosure is too small to fit them on the front. Boom is also typical of too small enclosures, and it has nothing to do with port placement either.2 points

I carried a stolen bar towel in the case for years. Wiped my hands and strings/neck periodically during a gig. Still have it. Fast Fret on strings between sessions.2 points

To my mind - not enough to justify the huge gulf in price - I’m pretty sure the 1024 was about £600/£700 new and the 2024 was about £2000… the 2024’s I played never disappointed but also never made me giddy…at current used prices though (think there’s a nice sunburst one about £1500) you’d be very hard pressed to get better. The 1024x I had was a beauty - I absolutely regret not keeping it - but I will say, the rough and ready sound of the 424/414 suits me better - the extra refinement of the 1024/2024 would be a waste on my skill set - like giving fine wine and caviar to a chimpanzee.2 points

I don't subscribe, but could read the whole thing. It is a small article. I've looked around the internet for a little more info, but couldn't find much more. Apparently they are going to use a "Future-proof digital storage"😂 "Brain"? In a thousand years brains will be soooo last millennium2 points

But that seems to be the whole point: can anyone, even a duff singer, get enough plays just by sheer force of presence in the media..? Is it singing talent that makes folk play the clips, or some other factor..? If it's an experiment of the sort, a 'duff' singer would be required, not a good one. Maybe.2 points

I've made the mistake before of playing originals in an ordinary boozer... On one memorable gig our metal guitarist was just starting his extended solo as a hen and a stag party walked in. He was widdling away happily, eyes closed, fingers tapping merrily when a drunken girl staggered over to him wearing a skirt I'd barely class as a belt - she shouted "can you play "'Summer of 69'?". To his credit he stopped his solo there and then, shouted the key (I'd never played the song) and we did a quick chorus, then straight back into widdly metal. Punters barely noticed as they were so busy sniffing round one another! So now we only play dedicated music venues and festivals, cos folks there come specifically for the music...2 points

If you don't mind building one of these would be ideal We've been looking at a lot of bass speakers and the crossovers are rarely done with a lot of care so that's probably what you are hearing. If you want to buy then it's probably best to skip bass amps most of which are 'voiced' in some way and go for a PA speaker. I use my RCF ART310's sometimes and they work well with bass up to quite a reasonable volume. Depends upon what your budget is of course.2 points

I think a trip to Bass Direct is the best advice. Quality on any Fender is a lottery so make sure you try before buying.2 points

My guess would be that it was a joint project with a couple of students from her uni's media/perfomance arts departments. She does her experiment, they get to show off their skills putting together a glossy video, maybe there's a music production department that got involved as well. Costs are kept down. Everybody hands in a fairly impressive bit of coursework that ticks the right boxes for their respective studies and, as a bonus, gets to put creating a viral video on their CVs.2 points

Thanks a lot Phil, much appreciated. I'm not obsessed about tone either, I love getting a good sound and feeling the trousers flap but I'm not good enough to be that fussy. I'm just looking for something that's portable, sounds good with a nice rounded low mid sound and has enough power to handle some gigs with a modest drummer. I love a bit of DIY so this sounds right up my street!2 points

Great Thread I still can't get my head around EB bringing out a budget line and calling it Sterling (CEO vanity perhaps) I have a full fat EB USA Sterling, and it's sublime. The quality of the finish and the very slim neck as well as very sturdy high Quality hardware make it a joy to play. I owned it years ago and part traded it, I was very lucky to manage to get it back. It has a one piece Ash body with very unique grain and a matched headstock. It was modded by a previous owner with a Nordstrand vintage pickup, So it has the vintage voiced Alnico pickup, making it sound closer to a Stingray. I occasionally think I could sell it and get one off the far East Sterling SB and unlock some cash, but then I pick it up and I know id regret it. The USA made Sterlings are so well made and as stated smaller bodies and thin necks, great for smaller fellows like me 😁 also they are good enough for Joe Dart etc 😂2 points
