There's a very long thread elsewhere as to me leaving the band I'd formed seven years ago. People are just asshats really. Stupidly, it took a while to get over it; so much time invested and work to keep it together. I went out for an Indian last night with some friends and they asked whether I miss it. I just answered no and then showed them a photo (below) of the old band, headlining a gig in Reading last weekend playing to six people. It was precisely this, the unconditional acceptance of every gig offered and playing to next to no one (it happened) that led to the cracks. I mean credit to them for continuing to grind through gigs like this, but frankly it's just not worth the effort.4 points

Last update for a while, here's the twins upright on stands just to get a better look at how they look. They are now hanging in an old wardrobe until they have hardened enough to be safe to handle without risk of marking the lacquer, somewhere between a week and eight weeks, I really don't know until they get there.3 points

BASS SOLD I am considering to sell my gorgeous and rare Mustang JMJ signature, I love it and it looks fantastic but I am struggling getting use to the short scale, my fingers are too heavy. I bought it only two months ago, so it's brand new, but road worn... 🙂 It comes with soft short scale Fender Gig Bag and two sets of strings, rounds and flats. I live in London. I will consider trades with Precision Basses: but I am not willing to add any money. Cheers Emanuele3 points

My 1980 Wal Pro 2E has been my most treasured possession since 1986. The only thing I would even momentarily consider swapping/selling it for would be another Wal, a five-string fretted one.2 points

Don’t think I have a number one bass anymore. I have a bass I gig more than the others and basses that would be tough for me to replace but none are sacrosanct. I keep thinking of selling the 3 non-cheapies and getting something really special but I doubt I’ll ever go through with it. Ironically my main gigging bass is nominally the one of lowest value (the Mustang on the left - the Jag is no longer resident).......go figure.2 points

That must have been a terrible band - I never sh*t in the car, as mrs discreet moans like hell.2 points

It should bridge the gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the pedal to provide friction. You could also do the brofressional thing and invest in some gaffers tape.2 points

It’s only through pain that thou shalt find salvation....🤦🏻♂️🐒😁 under the blisters nice calluses are waiting, then the holy grail of the double bass player will reveal itself: taking teabags out of the cup without the need for a teaspoon (what’s a few germs amongst friends...)2 points

Going to listen to this today. I also found out yesterday that there was a bonus track on the Cog CD In Search of Better Days called Liberation Groove, it’s a killer track but for some reason doesn’t appear on my physical CD! Whilst talking about new music I listened to the album Le Chic Remix by Dimitri From Paris this week, there’s some really clever work on old tracks but they have boosted most of ‘Nards lines in the mix and you can hear them so much better. It’s awesome.2 points

Old thread resurrection. I’ve been hammering The Clash this week on the 800-odd motorway miles I’ve done. They’ve never been far away from my ears since I heard Bankrobber as a kiddie back in 1980. Simonon is one of my absolute heroes and the reason I play a white/black Precision. Has anyone cooler ever strapped on a bass guitar?2 points

I'm colour blind. Explains the consistently crap playing.2 points

It's true. I've been known to tap my right foot when playing my blue bass and tap my left foot with the 3 tone sunburst.2 points

I'd never change an "offensive" lyric if I was covering a song. The composer wrote those words for a reason and I think it's a greater offence to bastardise someone's art than to offend someone who deams their language to be inappropriate. It's your God given right to be offended and it's my God given right to offend you. Words are not and will never be violence; "Sticks and stones... Etc." to equate "offence" with "assault" is a very dangerous road to tread in my eyes.2 points

Not to sound judgmental, but please tell me you drive first and take substances later? I used to put down a lot of time with a psychoactive substance -- alcohol, in my case -- so I'm by no means a saint, but cars and substances don't mix Edit: Wait, wait, the word you've masked isn't shooting, it's the other thing, isn't it? Reasons to quit bands: having different aims than the rest, not being able to sack the one with a different aim, mismatch of aims and time investment, personality clashes, market just not being there for the band's oeuvre...1 point

Easy solution, just don't look at your fingerboard or fingers! Incidentally, many years ago when I had our local guitar makers (Northworthy) make me a fretless neck, they asked if I wanted the dots "as normal" or "on the note" and I had them "on the note"; apparently some people who look at the side dots on a fretted find shifted dots on a fretless confusing. After all, fretted or fretless you are supposed to put your fingers very nearly in the same place. I think if I had a fretted bass made I'd have the side dots on the frets rather than between frets - whereas on my fretted Warwick (which started life as a fretless) the dots have been very carefully, and neatly, moved to between frets. Hey ho. PS: lovely photos (as usual) Sylvia :¬)1 point

I think my postman is starting to dislike me. Not a huge fan of the vintage tint but at £29 for a neck with block markers I can deal with it. Still waiting for shielding tape to show up so I can continue work on the bodies.1 point

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggg Some of us will be tearing our hair out if it's 8 weeks.1 point

I can appreciate the neck angle quite well from those last images. Not having played that style of bass I wonder if it adds comfort to have the body tucked back under your picking hand. Up to eight weeks or more 'till they see hardware; that's the bit that some home builders would struggle with, myself included. Of course, experience would teach most of us to wait if only we got to make as much stuff. It's great to have a forum like this where those with the experience demonstrate their skill as if in real time and have no problem rubbing shoulders with Johnny Come-Latelys such as myself. Cheers Christine. For now I've got to wait while they gestate. Harumph!1 point

Not having subs is not a problem, too much goes thru them anyway causing horrible boominess. It's more about EQ Not having drums through it helps you a lot. Make sure the guitars and voice have a high pass filter at around the 600 to 1000Hz mark (I think iirc) so they don't creep into your sphere and put a high pass filter on your bass at 80 to 100 Hz so the speakers are not trying to pump out the low lows that might damage them and use up more energy from them than you think. Start off conservatively thru the PA, turning your amp down as you put more through the PA to spread the load.1 point

Rock hopping a little on the sequence of the build, but the top wood has arrived so I've planed the joining edges using the 'offset fence' technique on the router table and now am gluing it prior to thicknessing it from 5mm to 2.5 - 3mm. Now it's down in the cellar being glued: The only clamps applying any pressure are the three sash clamps - two on the bottom and one on the top. The rest of the clamps are just gently holding the cauls, top and bottom to prevent it bowing or twisting. I will be doing the thicknessing using hand planes and cabinet scrapers (gulp) once the glue has fully dried overnight. I think this afternoon will be taken up with me honing plane blades and burnishing scrapers!1 point

Probably hard to believe, I know, but I suspect that Bilbo is, in fact human..! He probably (not 'certainly', but 'probably'...) has feelings and emotions, just as outlandish, illogical and contradictory as most of us (well, me, at least...). I, for instance, don't approve of folks burning up fossil fuels in guzzling vehicles. I'll be going to the shops, however, in a few minutes in my car. Hypocrite..? Yup..!1 point

We do Jilted John and without fail everyone smiles at, she a slag, and he's a creep, she's a tart, he's very cheap, she's a slut, he thinks he's tough, she's b1tch and he's a poof, sometimes political incorrectness is amusing. I may be old fashioned but when did it become ok to say the C word and not the N word oh yeah the profanity filter is really pi*sing me off1 point

A synth legend. As well as playing, he was very creative and also heavily into the production. The sounds he brought to the first two DD albums brought so much atmosphere which allowed the rest of the instruments to shine against a lush background. Probably the hardest spot to fill in a DD tribute IMO.1 point
