  1. There's a very long thread elsewhere as to me leaving the band I'd formed seven years ago. People are just asshats really. Stupidly, it took a while to get over it; so much time invested and work to keep it together. I went out for an Indian last night with some friends and they asked whether I miss it. I just answered no and then showed them a photo (below) of the old band, headlining a gig in Reading last weekend playing to six people. It was precisely this, the unconditional acceptance of every gig offered and playing to next to no one (it happened) that led to the cracks. I mean credit to them for continuing to grind through gigs like this, but frankly it's just not worth the effort.

  2. Last update for a while, here's the twins upright on stands just to get a better look at how they look. They are now hanging in an old wardrobe until they have hardened enough to be safe to handle without risk of marking the lacquer, somewhere between a week and eight weeks, I really don't know until they get there.

  3. BASS SOLD I am considering to sell my gorgeous and rare Mustang JMJ signature, I love it and it looks fantastic but I am struggling getting use to the short scale, my fingers are too heavy. I bought it only two months ago, so it's brand new, but road worn... 🙂 It comes with soft short scale Fender Gig Bag and two sets of strings, rounds and flats. I live in London. I will consider trades with Precision Basses: but I am not willing to add any money. Cheers Emanuele

  4. My 1980 Wal Pro 2E has been my most treasured possession since 1986. The only thing I would even momentarily consider swapping/selling it for would be another Wal, a five-string fretted one.

  6. Don’t think I have a number one bass anymore. I have a bass I gig more than the others and basses that would be tough for me to replace but none are sacrosanct. I keep thinking of selling the 3 non-cheapies and getting something really special but I doubt I’ll ever go through with it. Ironically my main gigging bass is nominally the one of lowest value (the Mustang on the left - the Jag is no longer resident).......go figure.

  10. It should bridge the gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the pedal to provide friction. You could also do the brofressional thing and invest in some gaffers tape.

  11. It’s only through pain that thou shalt find salvation....🤦🏻‍♂️🐒😁 under the blisters nice calluses are waiting, then the holy grail of the double bass player will reveal itself: taking teabags out of the cup without the need for a teaspoon (what’s a few germs amongst friends...)

  12. Going to listen to this today. I also found out yesterday that there was a bonus track on the Cog CD In Search of Better Days called Liberation Groove, it’s a killer track but for some reason doesn’t appear on my physical CD! Whilst talking about new music I listened to the album Le Chic Remix by Dimitri From Paris this week, there’s some really clever work on old tracks but they have boosted most of ‘Nards lines in the mix and you can hear them so much better. It’s awesome.

  13. Old thread resurrection. I’ve been hammering The Clash this week on the 800-odd motorway miles I’ve done. They’ve never been far away from my ears since I heard Bankrobber as a kiddie back in 1980. Simonon is one of my absolute heroes and the reason I play a white/black Precision. Has anyone cooler ever strapped on a bass guitar?

  15. It's true. I've been known to tap my right foot when playing my blue bass and tap my left foot with the 3 tone sunburst.

  18. I'd never change an "offensive" lyric if I was covering a song. The composer wrote those words for a reason and I think it's a greater offence to bastardise someone's art than to offend someone who deams their language to be inappropriate. It's your God given right to be offended and it's my God given right to offend you. Words are not and will never be violence; "Sticks and stones... Etc." to equate "offence" with "assault" is a very dangerous road to tread in my eyes.

  19. This is a superb bass from the top class luthier: Paul Everson. It has a 40mm top nut, Schaller hardware, EMG pick-up, volume, dual concentric bass/treble with mid sweep for each. The current string spacing is 19mm but adjustable either way. It is a lightweight bass at 3.6kg.

  23. My ex-band was an indie-pop originals band, with a lot of interesting potential in the music, but fatal differences in musical standards and failures of communication. I tried, often, gently, to talk these through, but was ignored. Eventually I had to get out. Had a long phone talk with the keys player - the only one I'd have given the time of day to outside band sessions - who was very supportive. Then had a short phone talk with the bl, who was completely defensive and almost rude. Then sent a very short polite email to all the band members - none of them replied. Which confirmed to me that I was right to leave. I had put a lot of time into that band and developing basslines and arrangements for their music, and it shouldn't have been hard to say "thank you". Mind you it was good musical experience, and it's a shame it didn't work out. (They did find another bass player, but disappeared completely soon after.)

  25. A cursory examination of the lyrics and of such background as is available indicates that the song Oliver's Army is a meditation upon the enlistment of young, unemployed men into the British Army. The 'Only takes one itchy trigger, one more widow, one less white n*****' line refers to such collateral damage as was sustained by Irish Catholics during the Troubles. The title plays upon the dark reputation of Oliver Cromwell and his frankly savage acts against the Irish people during his conquest of Ireland. The song was - apparently - written upon Mr Costello's return from a trip in 1978 to NI when it became apparent to him that the British soldiers serving in Ulster were both very young and from a background of poverty. It works on a lot of levels.

  31. I can appreciate the neck angle quite well from those last images. Not having played that style of bass I wonder if it adds comfort to have the body tucked back under your picking hand. Up to eight weeks or more 'till they see hardware; that's the bit that some home builders would struggle with, myself included. Of course, experience would teach most of us to wait if only we got to make as much stuff. It's great to have a forum like this where those with the experience demonstrate their skill as if in real time and have no problem rubbing shoulders with Johnny Come-Latelys such as myself. Cheers Christine. For now I've got to wait while they gestate. Harumph!

  32. I agree with that 100%. But the problem is; there are too many out there who won't agree; some of whom will see it as their duty to take to social media to create as much of a s**t-storm over it as possible....😐

  35. dUg is my bass hero. Has been since I first saw King’s X in 1990 and saw a guy who played bass slung low and left handed just like me. I don’t have it slung low nowadays but I’m still a lefty 😉

  40. I know what you mean, Paul. I had a 78 Precision that sounded pretty much unlike any other I`ve ever had, I named it Ian Paisley as it just barked at you, was really aggressive sounding. Sometimes you get one that just has a different voice, for no specific reason.

  41. Our keyboard player used to travel with the drummer. Usually they would meet up half way and load into one car. At the end of one evening they loaded up the keyboard players car and he drove home. The next morning he found that one of his keyboards was missing. It had been left on the pavement leaning against a tree! 2 days later he got a call from a local music shop saying someone was trying to get in touch. They had found the keyboard and wanted to return it. All they had to go on was his name on the case and an internet search!! He gave the guy £50.

  43. Red Yamaha BB300 Japanese one. I ended up putting an ebo pickup at the neck and had it re-Sprayed in Ford RS blue. i sold it to a mate who’s a guitar tutor and he uses it for recording and teaching... (here’s a picture off his website where it lives next to another ex of mine - a limited edition Epiphone acoustic which I never should’ve sold...)
