2. Really? Whilst I do agree that you have to write music for you, and not because you think audiences will like it, take away the audience completely and what do you have left, bedroom guitarists/bassists/drummers. The audience and fans are to me the major thing - what we all do means something to people who come to see us. A few weeks ago we were asked to play a gig for a guy who unfortunately had cancer - I say had as sadly he passed away recently. At the end of the gig he said to me "that made my night". I was really humbled and pretty choked by this, I felt honoured that we had been asked to do the gig. Never forget that whilst we get pleasure from what we do, it`s who you deliver it to that counts, and your music could really mean a lot to someone.

 8. I've played a few overpriced disasters, inckuding an MM Bongo that played & sounded worse than the bog seat it resembled. The stand-out however was a Fender Custom Shop Jaco sig - a £3500 bass with a neck like a banana and an action you could stick your arm under, and strung with roundwounds as rough as rat-tail files. I'm sure a good setup & some more appropriate strings would've helped sort it, but it still would probably have sounded more like someone whacking a plastic bin with a 2x4 than a high-end Jazz!

 12. Did a fundraiser for one of our colleague’s daughter who has been recently paralysed from the waist down. We played at work in an outdoor area about 60’x120’. Sound was a nightmare due to the walls and the marquee roof, struggled to avoid sounding like we had permanent reverb. Floor was wobbly slabs which didn’t help the sound either. Mostly colleagues, friends and family and were up for it from the off. The support band played 40 minutes then we did 2x1hour sets with them shouting for more at the end (sadly we were bouncing off the licence curfew). A brilliant night and raised a load of money as well.

 13. Very happy with the carbon reinforced neck in my Shuker 5 string P bass. Very stable, no floppy B, and almost comical how well it stays in tune.

 14. Never seen the words 'stunning' and 'Bongo' in the same sentence before. However that does look rather pretty. The headstock shape does still remind me of Peppa Pig's head, though.

 18. The clear out continues.... As I'm barely using some of my basses (due to my Spector love and possibly having some new stuff incoming) I've decided to let a number of them go.... This is a fantastic, frankenstein/bitza 70's style Fender Jazz Bass that I asked the legendary Charlie Chandler to source, assemble and create/set up for me a few years ago using: WD Music Vintage White 3 Piece American Alder body finished in thinly applied polyester to allow the natural tone to ring through AllParts 70's style block/bound Maple board Jazz neck with correct Fender logo pre-included/applied Wizard Custom Jazz Pickups - custom built and handwound by Andy Blake in the UK - do a search through old threads etc to see the high regard these are held in. He has now retired but his work continues with Hot Rod pickups. Gotoh 201B-4 bridge for fantastic solid tone and increased sustain Gotoh Nickel reverse gear 'elephant ear' tuners Pearloid capped controls Pickup cover The bass is in fantastic overall condition with just a paint chip on the front edge being the only real noticeable flaw (my fault due to clumsiness). Hasn't been played in a while so could probably do with a set up etc... It cost over £800 to source, build etc. Gigbag will be included and of course it will be boxed/packed well for delivery. Payment by Bank Transfer (preferred) or Paypal (buyer pays all fees). Please see my extensive positive feedback thread for assurance of a clean, fast and trustworthy transaction.

 19. Decided I need to thin out the herd a little to make way for possible incoming purchases...... it's a hard choice what to let go..... so I do this with sadness/regret and way withdraw at any point.... This is a unique piece.... a real one-off bass. The seller I obtained it from said he discovered it was part of a multi-instrument Japanese Samurai art mural done by artist Takeshi in 1988 and used for Ibanez promotion in Japan. The other mural pieces were believed to include a top of the range Ibanez guitar among other things.... A top of the range example of the Soundgear series it features EMG active pickups/circuit, sharktooth/fin fretboard inlays and heavy duty Ibanez hardware along with deep inset bolt-on neck and the unique artwork illustrated below. As to be expected, the sound is bold, dynamic and punchy and this bass turns heads everywhere it is seen. I'm always being asked about it whenever I play it out....! It has a few scratches and lacquer chips, as to be expected of a bass 30+ years old but nothing major and plays smoothly and accurately across the board. Hard to put a value on this but I believe I have set a fair price for a quality 'top of the range' Japanese instrument with inlays, EMG pickups/circuitry and hand painted unique/original artwork. Will send well packed in a padded gigbag within boxing etc. Payment by bank transfer (preferred) or Paypal (buyer pays fees). Please see my extensive positive feedback thread for assurance of a clean, fast and trustworthy transaction.

 20. Now SOLD - thanks for looking. Hi Folks For sale only is my 1990-91 MiJ Squier Precision Bass, which comes with a tatty, but functional hard Fender case. SOLD I bought this from PawelG about this time last year and have used it for just a couple of gigs and a few rehearsals in that time. Here's what he had to say about the bass in his ad, and I hope he won't mind me quoting him because he summed up the bass really well...: "So, this Precision is as good as my 1983 JV. The pickups seem a bit ''hotter'', there is A LOT of bottom end and the sound is very woody. Come and hear it for yourself if you can... The bass is in great condition, has been used a lot but cared for. Usual marks here and there, nothing major. The frets might need polishing in the near(ish) future. Frets 1 to 7 have marks on them already, the rest is almost perfect. Action is really low and there is no buzz anywhere. Currently strung with flatwound D'Addario Chromes. I tried to picture all the imperfections, please message me if you need any more detail. Comes with a Fender strap, real celluloid 62PB pickguard and a spare white pickguard. Weight is just under 4kg/8.8lb. Nut width - 40mm. " I bought the bass partly to scratch that 'I really must have a P Bass' itch that I get every couple of years, and to be honest, I wasn't disappointed when I got this one; if you're into that Motown thump and James Jamerson tone, then this is perfect for that. As Pawel said, it's got a great, warm, woody tone, it plays really well, looks very cool with plenty of mojo and is nice and light - perfect for long gigs! And because I've hardly used it in the time I've had it, it's still in exactly the same condition that Pawel described it as being. I'm selling only because I need to find some funds for a new car and if that weren't the case, then I'd be more than happy to keep this because it's really nice P Bass. And just to explain why I'm selling when it's such a good bass - It's because I'm primarily using Thunderbird basses in my main gigging band now, and I also have a BC Rich Eagle that gets used a lot (and which I couldn't ever part with), so my gigging needs are well catered for. Hence this beauty being up for sale! In terms of price, I'm looking for £330 (or near offer) for the bass & case, not including any postage costs. Viewings are very welcome if you're near enough to me in Littlehampton, West Sussex (tea/coffee/biscuits provided of course), and I'd also be happy to work something out about travelling if it's within a 50 mile radius.. I'm happy to post (for an additional cost) but there's always a risk with that which I'd prefer not to have to do if possible. Anyway, thanks for looking and if you need any more info, please ask away here or PM me. By the way, I do have a feedback thread too, so please check that out if you don't know me and want to check out my credentials on Basschat.. Cheers Nik

 21. I played a Lefay Herr Schwarz 5-string once that blew me away. So beautifully made, well thought-out, and barely any standard parts. Nearly everything was made specifically for or by Lefay. Super comfortable to carry and play, and a great variety of awesome and useful tones via a rotary switch. But I couldn't afford it!

 22. Not my gig. A night off. I went to watch a band at my local and their drummer quit during the second set. Just started dismantling his kit. While someone else covered for a song, he dragged his cases on stage. Singer announced the next song, but no. Show over. Astonishment.

 23. Well pointed out, I had also forgotten this, memories of frequent repairs to my AC50 return. Seem to remember output transformers in many guitarists 100W valve amps failing as well.

 24. Shuker. My 5 string fretless is all the way up at the traditional end of the spectrum, but Jon makes great basses in many shapes and sizes. Quality is fantastic and he is a great guy to deal with.

 29. Thanks mate! 😊 She got her first gig last night, sounded great with the Dunlops on there, I'd forgotten how comfortable it is to play - I've been using my Sire V7 for gigs and although that too is a great sounding bass, they are a little on the heavy side. The P/J is a bit lighter but doesn't' feel insubstantial like some lighter basses. It certainly sounds heavy with the new pots. 😁

 35. I bought an Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe from Peter. Communication was all very clear and prompt. He posted item very quickly and sent me tracking number. He was also very helpful in answering questions about the pedal's functions. Very friendly and a real pleasure to have done business with! Thanks Peter! :-)

 37. You're misunderstanding this Al. Nobody is saying that a piano can't produce sound at 30Hz. It just won't be producing frequencies that low with the same amount of energy as say, 100Hz. Sound energy (or 'loudness') is not even across the frequency range unless produced under controlled conditions - and by that I mean a studio mix room at the very least. And speaker output certainly is not even across the frequency range. Again, look at the frequency response of my room at home in the post above. It is unnaturally flat down to 30Hz (by 'unnatural' I mean that the room has been engineered to produce such a frequency response). But look what happens below 30Hz. The amount energy nosedives, despite my subwoofer being happily rated down to 22Hz. The output of a grand piano will follow the same principle. The energy of the frequencies produced by a piano when a note is struck is not uniform from 20Hz - 20kHz. The point being that the energy at 30Hz is just once part of the overall sound; and moreso that upper harmonics contribute a lot more to how we perceive the sound, partly because they tend to contain more energy (when produced by the majority of instruments) and also because our ears are more attuned to noticing them. Not sure how many ways this same point can be restated, but I'm trying my best here! And some of this acoustics stuff does seem counter-intuitive, granted This is also where I think you're grasping the wrong end of the stick. High-pass filters don't completely 'chop off' the low frequencies; I think you know this. They attenuate or more simply reduce them. So there is still some energy down there, but ideally it is controlled and appropriate to the context of the band/ song/ room, etc. Ultimately, I think you seem to be someone who deals in absolutes and yet you'll struggle to find any when dealing with acoustics, which are far more, well, "mushy"

 38. A good gig is the band playing well and the audience enjoying it. A GREAT gig is when the magic happens. That all too rare night when everyone in the band is "On" and the musicians are almost telepathic. When everything you touch turns to musical gold and the components of the band fit together like a Swiss watch. When even one or two of the songs you have played for years, and are not that fussed about, just take off. The audience picks up on this and you can feel the energy flowing back onto the stage, adding more fuel to the bands fire and lifting things even higher. It can be in the local pub or the local arena, whatever, the feeling is the same, emotion and energy. That is a great gig.

 39. I reckon that north of 90% of the acts on Later have not been to my taste. That doesn't make Later a bad show. Later is a good show because it features live music. Why anyone would want to take it off the air just because they don't like the acts beats me. What these people should be moaning about is that lack of alternative music shows on TV. With more choice, maybe, people would stop bleating on about Later.

 40. Sometimes a feeling is all you've got to go on. I've learnt not to ignore such feelings. If someone is kosher, they'll be perfectly willing to accommodate you, answer your questions and make sure you're completely happy. If they're not, they won't!

 41. The 'buyer' refused the eBay refund I sent and insisted that I send the bass, so I have refunded him directly through PayPal (and have an acknowledgment from eBay that he has now received it). I'm guessing from his tone that he'd already sold it (eBay listing closed early), had seen a nice £600 pay-day coming his way, and is now rather miffed. What goes around comes around eh

 46.
Do we think collectable to some degree?
sorry no, Gibson basses, like the guitars do tend to keep their value to some extent... and people have only just started collecting the late 70s models. 80s Gibson basses are not collectable (except the flying V and maybe the victory to a small extent) But people do like Les Paul basses, as players, so they may get more collectable as they get older
