  1. Just got in from a Knock Off gig, supporting Therapy? at 229 Club London. Journey up not too bad, and managed to get parking right outside the door - result. Great backstage area where we could chill before and after the gig. Signal chain was Fender US Precision, via BOSS WL20L into my Sansamp, with my RM500 as a power amp. Therapy? kindly allowed us to use their cabs so I went into an Eden 810, so with that and monitors no trouble hearing myself. Therapy?s monitor mix was perfect for us too so soundcheck was one song and sorted. On at 7:45, for a 45min set, venue holds 600, probably 500 watched us. Being a streetpunk/Oi band we’re not really on the same scene but we went down very well, many people coming up to us afterwards saying how much they liked us and how well we complimented Therapy?, being not just a clone but offering something different. Footwear was my Vans trainers.

  2. Today I made a 440 mile round trip to collect a bass that has just been completed by Mr.Jon Shuker. It's a bit too late to take any photos, so that will have to wait until tomorrow. It's similar to the one below, but the neck is narrower and more figured, it has different knobs, is #8 of 10 and is signed by JJ. Pick-up's are in house built, as are JJ's now. After years, probably more like decades, of avoiding Precisions because I found the necks a bit chunky, in 2021 I decided to order a JJ Sig with a J neck (build thread here). I have since used this exclusively in my main band and Queen tribute and it's been absolutely faultless. The Zenith promises to be equally as good and almost unbelievably, it seems to be lighter than my first one. Thanks once again to @Dood for turning my gaze towards Jon's basses in the first place (I'm sure Jon is a member here, but I can't remember his tag). Whilst at Shuker HQ, I also saw the two pieces of spalted maple which will form the top of my next Precision build and they look stunning too. If any of you are looking for a quality hand built Precision (other models are available) that won't require a second mortgage, give Jon a look at Shuker Guitars.

  3. A few photos of the actual bass. This one weighs just 6.7lbs! My other one feels like it's made of lead in comparison weighing in at 8.2lbs 😂.

  5. Electrick Soup @ Ram Jam Records, Kingston. Ram Jam Records lives inside The Grey Horse pub in Kingston. A charming spot, if you enjoy one-way systems designed to punish mistakes. There’s no parking out front, so you sneak in through the side streets. Take a wrong turn and you’re sent on a sightseeing tour of Kingston. I took the wrong turn. 😖 We were last on, 9:25pm, so naturally soundcheck was scheduled for 5:30pm. Parking restrictions in Kingston run until 10:30pm, so I left the car a mile away. Halfway back to the pub, I realised my wireless bugs were still in the car charging. Back I went. By then it was 6:20pm, so I abandoned the rules and parked half a mile closer in a 6:30pm restricted zone. A calculated risk. When I finally got inside, the band were already soundchecking. I joined without pedals, without tuning, and straight into the house amp — a Hartke KB12. Perfectly serviceable. Loud enough, no complaints. I was the only one who used it. One of the bands had cancelled, so it was three in total. Two covers, one originals. The organisers were great, the onstage mix was fine, and the audience — small but enthusiastic — seemed happy. Mainly 90s covers, nine songs in, we attempted “Mama Told Me Not to Come.” The arrangement confused us, and the audience. The applause was replaced by silence. We clawed back some dignity with “Connection,” but “Mrs Robinson” had to be restarted because one guitarist couldn’t hear. Three more songs survived, then his amp gave up completely. Four songs left on the list, plus two for an encore. None played. The amp’s valves have since been replaced, so tomorrow’s gig should, in theory, last the full length. Shuker 3 -> Getaria wireless bugs -> Helicon polyphonic tuner -> Flattely Poison Ivy bass fuzz -> Hartke kickback kb12.

  7. EBMM Musicman StingRay Special 2019 USA Lovely example in black and roasted maple. It has a black chrome control plate and knobs. Not sure if this is as original but this is what it came with when I bought it. It comes with EBMM case, tools, leaflets, inspection tags, etc. It plays beautifully and sounds as you would expect, classic StingRay punch and clarity with lots of tonal variations thanks to the three band EQ. As it is the Special model the hardware is updated and designed to reduce weight. The bass is nice and light at 3.9kgs. The lightest US StingRay I’ve played. I love this bass but quickly realised that the wider body is uncomfortable for me to play and so I’m looking to trade it for an EBMM Sterling (US version) preferably with a maple board or possibly a trade plus cash my way for a Sandberg California II VS4. No heavy weights please. Other interesting trade would be for a Shuker JJ Burnel or Shuker P Bass. I’m not interested in any other trades but would also welcome a straight sale. Great chance to buy a lightweight US made StingRay. UK only. Pickup preferred or I can post at buyer’s cost. Thanks.

  8. A rather big decision this one! Purchased in June 2023 in a private sale. I am not sure how long previous owner had the bass but there is a receipt from the owner before which shows they purchased it in 2000. That is as far as my ownership knowledge goes for the bass. It is all original apart from a refret which I had done earlier this year at the Vintage Instrument Workshop underneath No. Tom on Denmark Street. I believe the weight is somewhere around 3.8-3.9kg - I don't currently have a set of reliable scales, in any case it's a really nice lightweight bass. As you would hope and expect from a 60's P bass, it sounds great! I personally think the wear is exactly how you would want it, enough to show it's lived a life but nothing too detrimental to the overall look of the bass. I am selling because the playability is not as I would like it. The neck has a slight warp which has the effect of some of the higher frets buzzing excessively. Also, the truss rod screw is quite worn from over tightening. I have tried to be as helpful as possible in demonstrating this in the video attached - bear in mind it currently as a pretty fresh set of roundwound strings on - not sure what they are exactly, just an old set I had lying around - would put some Rotosounds on probably but had none lying around! It still functions excellently as a workhorse/groove/session bass as a jazz player primarily I am really looking to prioritise playability and I have found that I increasingly choose to play my Custom Shop jazz bass because the playability is so good. Thanks to 'Mr Fingers' for info on the case: "The case is legit Fender vintage, but not from 1969. It's a "no tail" logo with an R, and no "Made in USA" underneath the "Fe". That means 1972-1975. Also corresponds with the corner insert for the body." The photos of the bass where it has been taken apart were done by the person from who I brought the bass, who is a luthier. VIDEO LINK:

  10. I can’t imagine most of you would want me in your band. I’m racist. I used to buy The Blues Collection Magazine (with free CD ) for the great music… right up until they put a white guy on the cover. That was the end of that. I’m sexist. When the breakdown service said they’d prioritise lone women stranded at night, I thought: yes, that seems like basic common sense. I’m transphobic. As a straight man, I’m not interested in a romantic or sexual relationship with someone who has a penis. From what I gather, this means I’m a TERF, a bigot, and should be cancelled immediately.

  12. Lately I've found myself re-interested in woodwork after taking a long break, which came just at the right time as I picked up a botched/abandoned sg guitar project off eBay for peanuts. The plan - route a central channel to get rid of the off centre neck pocket and pickup route, fill with a strip of pine, re route for a 30" neck and new pickups/bridge. Finally to stain red in the classic style.

  14. You are making someone else’s gig happen so make the transition seamless. Be on time, know the material, sound good, look the part, make sure you know what the band leader wants and be flexible. Apart from that the floor is yours.

  15. @Lozz196 Great gig. Not surprised you went down well as Therapy? don't nail themselves too firmly to a scene, so I expect their fans are pretty open to other stuff. The two albums I worked on in the early 2000s had a fair dose of Punk mixed in to the metal. And the drummer then, Neil Cooper, his first love was Jazz!

  17. I grew up in a political household, grandad was leader of the council and charged debates at gatherings was the norm. Fall-outs were regular and (usually) temporary. My folks voted for Brexit. They voted against the interests of themselves, their children and their own grandchildren despite myriad warnings and bundles of evidence telling them that was the case. That’s not something that should be brushed off IMO. Mayhap i have unusual views on ‘family’ as I don’t buy this thing that ‘there’s nothing more important than family’ - it’s a mindless trope IMO

  18. For sale a Luthhier made 5 string slab jazz bass body with nice Maple top. Vol/vol/tone electrics and knobs are included. Its is on the heavy side weighing in at 3kg and I'm not sure of the actual main body wood sorry. There are a few small blemishes on the rear (see pics ) but the front is fine. Pocket dimensions in pictures. Comes with Schaller strap locks. Cheers Any questions fire away. UK postage included.

  21. It's been a few weeks since I started this. Sadly I was hospitalised after a nose op went wrong and I enjoyed the hospitality of Bradford Royal Infirmary for a while. This has not been forgotten though. The design has now been finalised and printed up. Here's some earlier designs. This was rejected as I wanted the control panel area to be a panel to and bottom. This is the latest design, with all four pieces glued in. The frame is very stiff and the glue is as strong as the filament so twisting it to breaking point could be anywhere on the frame, not at the joints. The next steps are lightly sanding down the rough areas. This is printed at 0.2mm height and the fastest speed the Prusa can do. I have sacrificed a little quality for speed, but as the frame will be sanded, filled, sanded, covered, sanded primed, sanded, painted, lightly sanded and then finally multiple coats of a finish, the reduction in quality will not make any difference. I know this because I've tested it. I am aiming to have zero printing lines visible so its indistinguishable from any other type of non FDM finish. It does have the tummy cut at the top but I'll show that later. I'm also trying to do the same design for a bass as well Thanks Rob

  23. I started depping many years ago. The first was in an 80’s band and I took over as the permanent bass player when the original left. He didn’t really leave, I think the band just got too busy for him. The great thing is he's a really nice guy and has since depped for me on the odd occasion that I haven’t been able to make a date. I’m now depping for two other bands, but I do get quite a bit of notice. Neither of them rehearse; not with me anyway. The main issue is song structure. Since the only time I get to play the songs with them is at a gig, it’s very difficult to keep track of the ‘quirks’ they’ve added into certain tunes. I generally resort to keep a very close eye on the drummer who knows the set backwards I always get a set well in advance which always has keys next to each song, but structure is the bug bear. I have a dep gig with one of them tonight. Loads of songs I haven’t played for a while. Fortunately 99% of them are in the original key, so I can familiarise myself with them today before I go out. I enjoy depping. There is something dangerous about it which keeps it fresh. Well done for stepping into it. I’m they are very grateful for your help. P.S. I get what the other guy/gal would have been paid. I wear what I like within rough guidelines. I always have an iPad with me as they do like to chuck in ones I haven’t prepped for. I have charts for 419 songs on it at the moment.

  25. My dad, who died less than a year ago at 92, used to tell a story. When his brother was a baby and he was about 12, a minister who was visiting the parish called round. My grandmother offered him the baby to hold, and while he was holding my uncle, he started crying. It was the first time he'd ever been offered to hold a white baby. Old people grew up in a time of casual racism, but not all old people are racists.

  26. As long as people are polite and respectful there should be no problem. People have differences, they are flawed and nobody is perfect or invulnerable. Times change, people change, attitudes change. There really has to be tolerance, respect and forgiveness or it is going to get really ugly out there. One thing I would say about getting older is your world shrinks and things start to become more of a challenge than an opportunity. On the flip side I think people get more phlegmatic and possibly a little less certain about what is the right way to be. I certainly see more capacity for forgiveness in the older generation. There is a slight tendency towards absolutism creeping into the world now. Ideally I want to stay living in a city as I get older because being around many different cultures, ages, backgrounds, religions is a healthy and positive thing. It’s difficult to believe all of the fear mongers in the media and in power when you walk down the street and see most people are the same. They face the same challenges, breathe the same air, walk the same streets and go home to lives that have more similarities than differences to the home I go back to.

  27. This world of depping is new to me and I'm enjoying the entree Those that dep, please share your tips and experiences! Anyone with other questions please chime in. What works for you, when need to perform large setlists (most which you didn't know before)? How much notice do you usually get (e.g. availability check, confirmation)? Do you have any principles for fee (e.g. same as the bassist you're replacing or regular band member, cash, delayed transfer)? Any good habits that help you get on with your bandmates and perform better as a dep? Do you read when performing (sheet, tablet - notation, tab, chord charts) if some of the band does? Any generic practice or preparation that is particular useful for depping bassists? Clothing: anything you have had to wear in particular, that has got used ? # Background So after many stops and starts playing bass over the years with a few startup originals and covers bands, with extra time on my hands to practice and play more, I've found myself getting into depping (been asked twice by the same band leader for 2 different bands: a large soul band and a rock band: all popular covers for pubs &functions). It was a bit daunting to be asked at very short notice - it was 30 hours before the gig - though they'd asked whether I'd generally be interested a couple of months before, but no commitment or gig in place. 30+ soul and funk songs, 23 or so, that I'd never learnt before. It was sketchy for a number of reasons on the 1st gig, but the one the next evening went better. I've more notice on this next one - a full week, yay! - and it's 30+ rock songs of which I'm working through now. 2nd dep gig, a couple of weeks ago... VID20250824205002.mp4

  28. 1974-76 Diplomat Jazz bass - Made in Japan and looks to be similar to the Cimar 1905 model - but branded Diplomat who I think were a Kiwi brand? I had one of these years back and it was amazing. A really fun playable bass, that was just enjoyable to play. A mate took it off me and still uses it regularly. I've kept my eyes open for one ever since... spotted this, did it up with new bridge and fixed the wiring with two new pots and got it all set up and... It is a really fun playable bass and enjoyable to play... but unlike years ago I've got 3 other basses that do that jazz bass thing, including my main one, and I can just see this gathering dust... so offering it up for sale or trade, just to get money back £180 posted Ono - or trades The Good Its a fun bass to play It's pretty light weight Solid Ash body Mostly original and it really good condition for the age Nice vintage style sound The original bridges on these are evil things with sharp screws - it was also missing two parts - I replaced it with a Gotoh Sets up and intonate well Looks cool really nice neck to play Save money compared to an original 70's fender Comes with old sadowsky blue rounds AND a set of flats that came with it. The look, sound and feel like TI jazz flats I've got on my other bass but I'm only 95% sure they are - I'll set it up for you with either. The Bad From the era just before Japanese basses became accurate - so note the square heel and I think it's 33.5inch scale. Pickups are normal size but with the classic curved ends. So if classic Japanese basses aren't your thing and you are looking for a mod platform - it will do that but not be drop-in for fender parts. With where the bridge pickup was tucked close to the bridge to fit under the original cover, and with the Gotoh bridge being a fair bit longer it looks like the bridge and pickup are closer than a 34in fender bass. The bridge probably could go back a bit if you wanted. The Ugly It could probably do with shielding to get it quieter So it's a fairly cheap, fun, old bass. Anyone have any love for it? Trades... try me, P basses, Telecaster copies, jazz master, Microkorg or similar simple synth... I also seem to like trying effects pedals... .

  29. I've been more than a bit smitten with my '95 Aguilar equipped Stingray, so you might say this is a natural addition... After selling off a few instruments over the last few weeks, I picked up this 2023 Stingray Special 5 in 'Smoked Chrome' yesterday. I first saw it when @lowregisterhead had it up for sale on here. I knew where it went, and traded a couple of instruments along with quite a few pictures of the Queen in order to acquire it yesterday. The setup was very good and curved accurately to the fingerboard as was, but I put 40-125 Elixirs on it last night, and today made some small adjustments, including raising the humbucker according to MM specifications. The Neodymium pickup still has the typical 'MM chewy sizzle' (yes, that's a technical term!) and looking over it, you can sort of see where the money has gone. I think MM are going the premium route these days, making less instruments, but really concentrating on top quality (and raising the prices considerably too!). The Special's new titanium tuners are much thicker and feel great in the hand, and the border between the glossed headstock & the oiled neck is utterly perfect. I've always liked basses with ebony fingerboards, too. Consider me suitably impressed!

I just wanted something for noodling around at home with an aux in and headphones out and a less neutral sound than the GR Bass 800 that i had at the time. Seriously impressed with it at home levels - can't get a bad sound out of it.

  32. If all works well, depping isn’t for one-off gigs; if you do a good job people tend to ask you back next time which makes it more worthwhile putting in the initial effort. In my main depping job, I cover for a bassist whose side project clashes with some gigs, so it’s steady depping rather than one-off depping. Much better.

  33. Absolutely and utterly beautiful!! Congratulations! You’re a lucky man!! I was smitten when I played one of Jon’s JJ CarbonLite models with the carbon fibre necks. A bass that if I could have, I’d have bought then and there, it was just delicious in every way. That man has golden paws. I’m hoping to one day have a Shuker P, I’ve a bunch of ideas that I’ve had lurking in my noggin for a while, that would also suit the viewers of my reviews too. 38. I had lessons with Ian in 2018. The first lessons I'd ever had. It as an eye opener. That was before his zoom days. Just sitting in front of such a great player and soaking up what he was doing, and how he was doing it, was worth it. Ian didn't change my basic style, I'm probably too old for that, but he added more layers to what I do. He also got me off my backside, widened my horizons, showed me different ways of getting the job done, suggested playing material I would never have attempted. Basically added to my technique and the way I approach songs. Stuff I was too lazy or blinkered to work out for myself!!

  39. Went down to a local cricket club last night, we played it recently on a sunday afternoon, but this was an evening one. Couldn't start until 9 as they had some event ceremony. Its an odd layout as we can setup to face into the field or setup to face into the club - we compromised on a diagonal so we could do either as necessary, As it was we stayed doing the front - it was a nice night and people were ok outside. Sound sounded a bit weird but hard to get right in these places - the singer had to use a sax for his micophone as the transmitter was away being investigated for noise and he forgot tot pick it up. Played for the usual 1:15 first set, and then the drummer and guitarist decided to investigate what time their curfew was as we were effectively outside and there were houses around. Came back with 11, so no point having a big break, so we went back on. I was showing the guitarist the EQ as he was wondering about it, and realised I had put my vocal and bass in the wrong socket, so a few songs must have sounded weird! Really short second half and rushed through a few songs, all went down really well, it was getting crowded towards the end, as people were now half in and out. Kind of glad it stopped when it did. Unfortunately though it seems that for some reason in the last 2-3 months, our drummer has swung wildly right wing (where he never really seemed bothered about politics before), so just spent all the non playing time ranting about muslims. Hoping it is a phase, I can ignore so much, but this is so OTT, if it carries on then it would get rid of my interest in playing

There is however, another Stingray Killer that people forget about - the now also discontinued Fender Dimension, in particular the HH model, which was a monster of a bass. I still miss mine, which I had to sacrifice when I bought my KingBass Mk-II.

  44. As far as I can recall, I've never, in 57 years of gigging, come across this problem/situation in a band scenario. Could that be that we, unbeknown to ourselves, all shared the same views and mindset? Could it be that the gig was the most important issue so conversations of that type never happened? Could it be that I was never on the lookout for new "besties" but simply people to play good music with? Who knows, however, I have come across plenty of people who have a dislike of the elderly and who have, either directly kept me out of a band or guided my decision to not join a band.
