  1. Squiar Rascal arrived today, super happy!

  2. I did some experimenting on my lunch break today. I've been using my GX-100 solely for ages now, but was wondering what some dirt in the loop would be like. Magnificent is the answer... I need to tidy it all up and get a shorter stereo cable for the FV-500H, plus I've got a current double arriving tomorrow to power my GX from the main power supply. Looking forward to testing it at our gig tomorrow!

  3. Another day, another pedalboard iteration. Still not sure if the Black Math will stay on here or go on my mini guitar board. Thinking I’ll rig up the Thru on the Olympic incase I want to run guitar through this board into the Science Mother preamp.

  4. That was what I said after trying the Cort Space out at Bass Direct. One came up on Gumtree for a sum not unadjacent to £400, although I had a 280 mile round trip to pick it up. So today I went on that journey, braving the imbeciles on the M11 and A14, and picked up the black Space. The seller didn't get on with 5-strings, so was selling it after just a month or so. I'll be able to do a proper back to back comparison between the Space and the Ibanez EHB1265MS with added Aguilar pickup goodness.

  7. This thread looks like the right place. I played one of these at BassDirect last year (which sold) and loved it. I have been drooling over this one at Andertons since, and when it went on clearance with nearly 40% off I had to go for it. Arrived and gigged on the same day, no setup required. Sounds 100% what you expect it to.

  8. Hi, I've decided to go for something a little different so my RM800 is available. 800w model. Been used on about 20 gigs per year since I've had this, sometime simply as a preamp/di box where in-ears have been available. Works fine, only used the compressor but drive and octaver sound fine. All eq works as it should. Some minor scuffing on the casing. The bag has lost its zip but ok for carrying around if needed. Hope I don'y regret selling as it's the 3rd Rootmaster I've owned Will be available from midweek this coming week. Looking for £250 incl UK postage.

  10. Boss RE-202 Space Echo. Boxed. Excellent condition. With power supply. £200 £190 (+£7 postage via special delivery). Delay, Reverb, Saturation. With presets and midi. Bought new in May 2024 and only used at home (for DJ setup with record decks and mixer with fx loop, but I've now got digital decks and mixer that doesn't have fx loop). I have the shop receipt.

  12. Hello May very well regret this, but this was a 40th birthday gift to myself. And now I have to admit that I just don't play it as much as I thought I would and it is a tad ridiculous that I own this! So reluctantly exploring moving it on. So here goes This is my 1977 Fender USA Mustang Bass. Bought from https://www.vintagerareandretro.co.uk/ about a year ago. Bass is well played, the usual nicks and wear and tear from a bass over 46 years old. The headstock seems to have taken the biggest hits! Volume and tone controls work correctly and as far as I can tell the tuners and bridge are all original. Nice playing bass, just a bit wasted on me Also comes with hardcase Based in London and would be looking for pickup only and of course you are more than welcome to try the bass out Cheers Adam

  13. but this guy is very nifty. However, he is also accompanied by superb bass playing! Apparently the bass player is Thiago Espírito Santo, not a name I've heard before Old video - 9 years ago ...

  14. Or almost, that is... Just ordered a new Ibanez GSRM20B Mikro Bass in Weathered Black finish from Thomann. Should be here Wednesday or Thursday next week. Just 28.6" scale length, Maple neck, bound Purple Heart (which is almost as hard as and stiffer than Ebony) fretboard, Okoume (which is a cheap alternative to Mahogany, lighter and not as hard, but is supposed to have very similar tonewood qualities, and looks a lot like Mahogany too) body. (following image is from Ibanez's own homepage) Plan on fitting at set of P/J EMG Geezer Butler pickups in it as soon as I get it. I'll update this thread with pictures of the actual bass, when I get it.

  15. In order to hit two birds with one slap. Ánd a 5-string for that one time in a month I crave that ánd the classic-ish stingray sound. Didn’t want to fork out the cash for a true stingray, and didn’t really fancy the standard 5-string Ray cosmetics. This appears to be the perfect blend of 4-string looks, somewhat seventies sound and style and at an affordable price point… picked this one up 2nd hand but defacto new (plastic still on the batter cover) for next to nothing… plays really nice, sounds a bit barky, but need to rewire it to parallel. An absolute boat-anchor though!

  21. Reduced to £300 The not to common AGB205 DVS* which is Ibanezes discontinued 5 string short scale semi acoustic bass, I believe they still do the 4 string, but the 5 strings are uncommon. Good condition, semi acoustic with 2 pickups that look like humbuckers but I dont think they are. Quite bass heavy plugged in, not that loud unplugged but fine for jamming in the room plugged in which is what I got it for. But I am not gigging this and tend to jam with headphones in the room now, so it is not getting used so time to move it on Can be picked up from here, or can meet up within a 50 or so mile region of here, so Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Basingstoke areas. Not so keen on posting as I don't have a hard case for it and it is a bit.. well.. hollow * which stands for deep violin and gold. Not sure how that matches, but there you go, ibanez letters are always a bit random.

  22. Awesome EBS head. 600watts of Mosfet muscle with a great pre amp that features a switchable valve drive circuit, a great compressor, a variable bright circuit, deep, switch etc etc... The 'holy grail ' for some ... Happy to pack and post at buyers expense... it's got a bit of weight about it ...

  28. And so to the levelling, re-crowning and polishing. The fretwire I have used was a touch higher profile than the originals and so there was quite a bit of levelling to do to get them down to the levels of the original frets. The good thing, though, was that there would be negligible loss of overall fret height from the original in the final levelled board. I used my levelling beam and a radius block with emery cloth stuck on with two-sided tape to do the initial levelling. Because the fret gaps were now so small, my usual fret rocker was not much use and I had to improvise with a cut-up old store-card: For the fret re-crowning, I started with a Hosco crowning file and then used one of the excellent Chris Alsop diamond crowning files, first just by itself, and then with 400 & 800 emery papers, using the same file as a former, and then 4000; 6000; 8000; 12000 micromesh cloths** done the same way: Hard work** but a pleasing result: Finally, I mixed some macassar ebony dust with some clear epoxy and filled the new tang cut gaps at the fret-ends: So a bit of tidying up and re-oiling of the fretboard and a final check that the fret levels are all as they should be and it should be ready to return to @PaulThePlug **So that's 42 frets each having treatment from 8 passes - a total of 336 passes altogether. Many of you know that : 1. I play sax 2. I have hand arthritis slowly creeping up on me which is already starting to impact on 1. above 3. With 1. & 2. combined, I usually reckon that a normal fret job puts me out of action on the sax for a week Well, 336 passes - I reckon that will probably knock the sax out for the rest of the month! Word has got around and my local Village Community Association have asked me to pass on their sincere gratitude and thanks for this unexpected but welcome period of peace to @PaulThePlug

  31. I asked for advice on buying this guitar and amp on another thread, and appreciate all the advice given. Well, I bought it....my first bass. A squire P bass and a Fender Rumble 25. Stripped it all down last night and cleaned & polished the frets and fretboard, body, chrome hardware. It was a bit too black and white for my liking, so put a matt black vinyl wrap on the pickguard. Put it all back together, and a new set of strings. Well pleased with how it came out. Plays really well, now to try and learn how to play the thing. Couple of before and after pics (hopefully).

  32. Sheryl Crow last night at The Piece Hall in Halifax. A wonderful 18th century building built in a square, designed for cloth weavers to sell their goods. Despite my aversion to large / outdoor gigs ( see post above), me and Mrs CP got some tickets for this gig as we both love Sheryl and she wasn't doing anything else on this brief UK tour that was near or indoor so we bit the bullet. Weather was awful as we got to the gig, but we found shelter under the arches on the perimeter whilst watching support band Dea Matrona, whose bassist sounded great on her Mustang bass. Fortunately the weather improved as SC and her band came on around 9pm. Great mix in a space that I would imagine can’t have been easy for her engineer. Band were wonderful, with Robert Kearns using Reverend, Fano, MM Stingray G&L basses. He also played guitar and Wurlitzer piano on a few songs, during which Sheryl played bass on her Guild M85, and sounded fine too. Audley Freed on guitar was his usual brilliant self, although missing fellow long standing SC guitarist Peter Stroud for this tour. Tim Smith did a good job standing in though. Sheryl was superb, in great voice and looking amazing! They did all the older stuff everyone loved, as well as a couple from Sheryl’s recent album ’Evolution’. Played for around 1 hr 40 mins. They have a few more UK dates, recommended. (pics below not mine, obvs!)

  33. Nothing super crazy, but I wanted to add a dedicated compressor to my Quad Cortex setup. After a lot of hunting and review reading, I narrowed it down to the Empress MK2 Bass, and the Cali76 MK2. The winner was...the Source Audio Atlas! I adore how much control I have in the Neuro app, and the ability to do silly routing options (such as running it as a 1176 at the start of my signal chain, and also an LA2A at the end) blows my mind. Great pedal, well worth the money.

  34. IME, unless you are out in the sticks playing church halls only, as an originals band you don't need a PA. Almost everywhere I've played for the last 30 years has had an in-house PA system, and those few venues that didn't were places that didn't normally put on live music and we would hire a PA specifically for the gig. The only originals bands I've been in that owned any sort of "PA" were those that also had permanent rehearsal spaces and it was strictly for use in there. On the other hand the lack of a drum kit is probably more of an obstacle. I assume their drummer has at least "breakables"?

  35. Funnily enough I played this bass last year (I live a short drive from the shop). Me and my pal played a bunch of the vintage basses there and this one was a standout.

  36. So here is the second of the two basses I thought I would never part with. (The first was my White Falcon and I miss it! If you’re reading this, I hope you’re enjoying her, Dale). This 1967 4005 is, of course, in played condition, I’d say pretty good actually for a well enjoyed 57 year old. As the pics show there are a few battle scars here and there with a surprisingly small area of buckle rash on the back. There’s also some varnish cracking/lifting at the top of the fretboard. The original case gave up the ghost some time ago so there’s a replacement hard shell one included. (Hard to find!) Pickups sound good and strong to me (last gig with her was a month or so ago, I don’t use her all the time - I have to be selective). I’ve never had her set up or adjusted, I’d say any fret wear is minimal despite the rounds I fitted and her neck is straight. As far as I’m aware everything is original, I don’t have the courage or the necessary skills to start taking things apart but I guess I’d be prepared to lift the scratchplate for pics if needed. I’ve had the privilege of owning her for, I think, about 10 years, purchased from a Talkbass member in New Jersey. The only trade I’d be up for would specifically be against a 1956 Precision …. any out there?? Happy to take more pics if asked. Sorry, UK sale only and there is absolutely no way she’s going anywhere with any kind of courier so it’s strictly collection only or possibly a mutually agreed meet-up. Thanks for looking!

  37. Inspired by chat about current gear prices here and elsewhere, I thought I'd share this advert, which I recently stumbled across while digging through some newspaper archives for work-related research. This appeared in the 15 September 1963 edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The fact that Leonards (a local department store) was putting these prices up-front in big writing suggests to me that they regarded these as competitive – they wouldn't have been simply stating RRP here. To put these figures in context, here are the CPI-inflation-adjusted conversions of those prices. They're surprisingly close to the current RRP for top-of-the-line (non-custom-shop) American-made Fenders, higher in most cases. BASSES Jazz Bass $279.50 = $2,854.61 (£2,271.66) Precision Bass $229.50 = $2,343.95 (£1,865.28) Plus another $59.50 ($607.69; £483.59) if you're a fancypants who wants a case. GUITARS Stratocaster $259.50 = $2,650.35 (£2,109.11) Jazzmaster $349.50 = $3,569.54 (£2,840.59) Jaguar $379.50 = $3,875.94 (£3,084.42) Cases from $49.50 ($505.56; £402.31) AMPS Piggyback Bassman $399.50 = $4,080.21 (£3,246.97) Princeton $99.50 = $1,016.22 (£808.69) I've had a look through contemporary used car listings from the same area, and while you couldn't get a nice car for these sorts of prices, you could get a car. Instead of a Jazz Bass you could have picked up a (ahem, stick-shift) 1955 Mercury Montclair, and instead of the misbegotten beast that is the Fender Jaguar (with case), you could be cruising around in the misbegotten beast that is the Ford Edsel. Ask yourself, what are the ladies going to go wild for – a Fender Jaguar or this fly whip?

  38. A few years ago, I joined a Marillion tribute band. Pete Trewavas plays a Warwick Thumb (which I had) but also there's a fair few pictures of him with a Cort GB4 (or it could be a GB94, the only visible difference is the colour of the logo IIRC). So I bought one, and found it a great bass. However, I was deposed from the band and because I only play 5-strings, I sold the GB4. However, I did fancy the 5-string version and a few days ago got the urge to have a look and see if anyone was selling one. Indeed there was one for sale from @jimmybass04 which he'd advertised a while ago but there was no sign of it being sold. It was indeed still available, and to save me a 300 mile trip to Glasgow, he had a friend bring it down to Leeds, a far more reasonable 120 miles away. So I went up there yesterday to pick it up. Lovely condition, fitted with Schaller S-Lock straplocks, although I think I'll be taking the flatwounds off in favour of lighter gauge roundwounds. Took it to an open mic night last night and it was fine, not a lightweight but I mainly sit when playing so that's not really an issue. Pickups are Jazz and humbucker which produce a very full and balanced sound. The tuners are Hipshot Ultralight (presumably the licensed ones) - nice attention to detail. The headstock, like a Fender, isn't angled back, and there's a string tree across all five strings to give a good break angle. Fretwork is good and the fretboard edges are nicely rounded.

  43. I disagree with the "stay in your genre" bit - we do guitar based songs with no guitars and drag them kicking and screaming into our world. Goes down well, familiar but different. Variants of "you guys do a kickass version of X" have been said to us.

  45. I've put the Meatball on my pedalboard (it JUST fits!) so I can do the final phase of testing against my Mutron. I might need to move the tuner sideways a bit but I stuck it down with that ridiculously strong dual lock and might leave that fight for another day P.S I sometimes like an octave or fuzz in the Meatball loop - I tend to use an OC2 but I might make another board just for the loop with another fuzz and phaser on it too.
