  1. I had this conversation last night, and thought it was valid, to a point. I was talking instrument prices with a mate, and we got to talking about whether or not one really needs to spend thousands of pounds on an instrument, when it’s perfectly possible to find a really great instrument, for a few hundred. live…. nobody cares what you’re playing, where it was made or what it cost. At all. It’s purely about your playing experience when it comes down to it. After 40yrs (😞) now of playing, my favourite two basses cost a few peanuts and they’re absolutely perfect for me. I just think the price of EVERYTHING has gone mad, and almost none of it is worth half the ticket. In my opinion of course

  2. We've been off for the past 4 weeks. That means we didn't have much booked for Jan & Feb. And we had a member with a serious medical issue. We start up again next weekend with a high end acoustic gig. Blue

  3. We played our studio engineer / co-producer's birthday bash in the rock n roll capital of NE Wiltshire (drum roll.....) Mildenhall last night! What made the event extra special for me was my old drummer from two of my recent bands made the trek all the way over from Wales to surprise us. We also got to jam with Cozy Powell's old keyboard player - not particularly my bag but very talented player and a sweet guy. Should probably add that this was also an informal launch for our debut single "Missives from the Sisters" which I'll unapologetically post here despite having posted it earier in the Share Your Music forum. Partly to make up for the rubbish phone snap!

  4. I had a few days where a couple of basses came up which I couldn't say "no" to. Both play really good...hard to say which I prefer, so for now I'll be keeping them both. Squier Dimension and G&L L2500

  5. But there are so many more variables involved than simply "it's a piece of wood". Colour, form factor, electronics, brand (and that can of worms!), association (or otherwise) with noted players, even- shock horror - the actual sound. That's like saying "a car is just metal on four wheels" or "a house is just a load of bricks". And if that all works for you, perfect. But just as your particular needs for cars, housing etc might not work for anyone else, similarly their own instrument choices based on their own needs might be different to yours. Or, to put your statement another way - just because your own basses which are perfect for you cost peanuts, that doesn't mean it'll work for anyone else. If that were the case, we'd all be playing Precisions. Oh. What's that? We all are? 😉

  8. Don't give up yet, you never know what might come along. I play DB in a swing band and jam with two different groups of friends who play jazz and might end up gigging, another band I was in might be getting together again and I am in the band for a theatre show this summer. Just to keep my interest up and learn new things I started taking weekly lessons last October to learn to play better and use the bow, it is tough but a good challenge and I can see improvement in all my playing due to the lessons and the bow is starting to sound almost nice...well, sometimes. On top of that I just got called to play with a friend who is a mandolin player and has a bluegrass band so it looks like I'll be playing at a couple of festivals this summer. It should be interesting because I've only jammed a little, never played in an actual bluegrass band but I guess he thinks I can handle it. I'll be 77 in May and after 60 years of playing and gigging I have no plans to stop and have been lucky to have played guitar, EB, tenor banjo, DB and EUB in an incredible variety of bands. If something comes along, I would suggest that you go for it. Keep most of your gear, you never know when you might need/want it. I was about to sell my second double bass just when the bluegrass guy phoned and now I'm doing some work on it and will use it at outdoor festivals this summer and save my good bass for indoor gigs.😊 Edit: I should add that I live in a rural area in northern Ontario so I have to be prepared to drive an hour or more for jams, rehearsals or gigs and there aren't many venues to play at but I have decided that I want to play so I'll just live with the driving, even in winter.

  9. Finished build 4/5 frog pedals fx1 alembic F2b thing - with a 1953 telefunken ECC82 inside I found in my garage and sounds nice - still some gremlins to work out as it’s decided to have a high pitched squeal sometimes … and 180v inside which is a bit scary

  11. Not looking for trades, peeps. First up, apologies for the (lack of) image quality...naff phone/naff photographer. Purchased on a whim just over a year ago. The thing is, the poor blighter never really stood a chance, as my Bass Centre Bruce Thomas Profile is my go-to so, apart from VERY limited home use, it's barely seen the light of day. As you can tell, it still has on the see-through plasticky bits...! Anyway, here's the official blah, blah, blah.... BODY BODY MATERIAL: Alder BODY FINISH: Gloss Polyester BODY SHAPE: Precision Bass NECK NECK MATERIAL Maple NECK FINISH: Satin Urethane Finish on Back, Gloss Urethane Finish on Front NECK SHAPE: Modern "C" SCALE LENGTH: 34" (864 mm) FINGERBOARD MATERIAL: Maple FINGERBOARD RADIUS: 9.5" (241 mm) NUMBER OF FRETS: 20 FRET SIZE: Medium Jumbo NUT MATERIAL: Synthetic Bone NUT WIDTH: 1.625" (41.3 mm) POSITION INLAYS: Black Dots TRUSS ROD: Standard TRUSS ROD NUT: 3/16" Hex Adjustment ELECTRONICS MIDDLE PICKUP Player Series Alnico 5 Split Single-Coil Precision Bass CONTROLS: Master Volume, Master Tone SWITCHING: None CONFIGURATION: Split Single-Coil HARDWARE BRIDGE 4-Saddle Standard HARDWARE FINISH: Nickel/Chrome TUNING MACHINES: Standard Open-Gear PICKGUARD: 3-Ply Parchment CONTROL KNOBS: Knurled Flat-Top NECK PLATE: 4-Bolt "F" Stamped MISCELLANEOUS STRINGS Fender USA, NPS, (Gauges .045 - .105) Now, I wouldn't be particularly arsed about hanging onto it only pennies are being saved to put toward a 1st generation Yamaha V-Max (I've had one before but I didn't learn my lesson) plus it deserves to be played, innit...? Years ago I used to buy and sell on here quite a bit and would agree to courier-insured delivery but cardboard cartons are a thing of the past in the Scott S household so it'd have to be collected I'm afraid. It's currently sleeping in a cheapo dust-dodging gig bag that has only a suggestion of padding which would make courier "care" even more of a worry. £579 ono. Cheers. Oh, I've not got any scales but, rest assured, it's exactly the same weight as a Fender Ltd Edition Player Precision Electron Green...ahem...sorry.

  15. Here's an interesting idea as regards headless Tuner/Bridges... it's an Italian firm apparently, using the depth of the body for the adjustable tensioning movement, rather than straight pull rearwards... The Rick thing might be a bit slim profile for this but it'd be good on a chunkier body

  17. Really pleased with this one. Nick and I did our first proper band / gig together in 1989. We revived things over lockdown. Very much a partnership, writing and producing together. One to be avoided if you hate drum machines, synths and fuzz bass!

  18. ***Price dropped to £1250*** Selling my beautiful gloss black Stingray 5 from 2001, with matching black headstock, rosewood fingerboard and black pearloid scratchplate. Fantastic sound, records beautifully. Gorgeous smooth neck. There are a few small signs of wear as shown in the photos but nothing that is ever obvious when playing the bass and nothing, in my opinion, that detracts from the beauty of this instrument. The swirly pattern on the close-up image of the body is a reflection of the ceiling...! Weight: 5.3kg/11.8lbs Not a lightweight, that’s for certain but the bass balances perfectly and a wide strap can help distribute the weight somewhat. No case. Price includes delivery by courier. Alternatively, I am happy to drive to meet at a reasonable distance from Wallasey, Merseyside (CH45). Message me for payment details and to discuss delivery/collection of this lovely bass that you're currently thinking of buying and then deciding wholeheartedly to buy 😉 Thanks, Steve

  19. Too many projects and this is one that probably won't get finished. Lovely and authentic looking and feeling wear by @d_g of this parish, original listing here Dan's pictures do it more justice than do mine but here's a few more..... I've also added a bridge, which is one of these and is very nice https://reverb.com/uk/item/15763833-retrovibe-fully-compensatable-bass-bridge-for-51-precision-string-thru-brass-saddle-19mm-spacing Other parts are..... - 51P Slab Alder Body finished in ocean turquoise metallic with heavy relic - Bareknuckle 51P pickup - Bareknuckle jazz bridge pickup - Reverse wound and reverse polarity to the neck pickup so that they hum cancel and sound like a jazz bass when both on - Gold anodised style pickguard (not actually anodised but looks the same) - Fully working P Bass Tone circuit with three way switch for neck/both/bridge pickup - Relic screws - String trough ferrules (very difficult to buy!) - Relic output jack cup Bridge was close to £60, body cost me £295 so how about £325?

  25. Doubt You’ll ever see another one of these in as new unused condition like this, let alone see another for sale. The ultra rare Germanium version of the Malekko B:Assmaster bass fuzz. Complete with box, Rubber feet, and novelty teeth still inside. Number 288 of only a few hundred made. See label inside. These pedals just do not come around anymore. A much more vintage and smoother version of the standard silicone copy. This is the Pedal Flea from Chilli Peppers famously loves and uses. message me with any interested or sensible offers

  27. For playability purposes I’d consider it definitely needs a refin. Personally I’d go for a vintage tint poly lacquer which would make it look fairly period correct. I had a maple neck MM refinned by Shuker a few years back with a stainless refret at very reasonable cost.

  32. I think it's done. To make the Capo work as a di, I made a little patch cable with a low profile xlr, so to plug into the pa there's an xlr socket at the side of the board beside the output jack for the amp. It's very much an all purpose board, mainly for my wedding band, but also a blues rock original and an industrial band. It covers it all pretty well, having 2 eqs makes it easy to swap between bass guitar and upright without too much hassle....

  34. I bought this bass over 15 years ago and it has been tucked away for so long that I forgot all about it, the guy whom I bought it from never really played it and as such its in top class conditio bar a few minor dents pictured. The brass has tarnished over time but its an eighties classic MIJ, the woods used are beautiful The very top frets buzz a little and will need sorted but in the right hands it should not be a problem, I will include the very heavy case that came with it. Even the plastic protection on the back of the tuners is still on 18v active circuitry that can be switched to passive and a series/parallel switch

  35. A few weeks back I decided to look in to Alice In Chains bass lines and it's been quite a black hole that I can't get out of. Mike Starr and Mike Inez both had a lot of amazing bass lines. Rotten Apple has to be my favourite so far. Amazing riff and very repetitive but it breaks off in to some amazing grooves. Then there's that bass tone

  36. I'm now past 72, and never play Beatles stuff much at all. I remember distinctly, though, the effect they had at the time, and often hum, sing or think of their songs (just this morning, for example, singing in my head 'I'm looking through you'...). I don't need to play 'em to get that effect any more; in fact it may well spoil things. Memories and nostalgia are precious gifts, to be preserved. Wishing your Dad a long and healthy life.

  40. OK, I've done some critical listening, and I don't think I can pass judgement on the design as I don't think I've made it right. I played a 30Hz tone at a fair volume and there were definitely artefacts that shouldn't be there. I ran my ear along all the seams and couldn't detect any leaking so the turbulence may well be something inside the cabinet. That I can probably live with. What I cannot is there is a pronounced hump in the upper bass frequencies, probably between 100-400Hz. It may be the room I'm playing it in, but I played my Acoustic Image side by side and that was a much flatter response. This cabinet was intended to be the prototype using cheap wood. I'm still bitterly disappointed that I didn't nail it, but I'm a little buoyed that I'll be able to correct the niggling errors that I made along the way with a second one. If I'm slow enough the horn may well come back in stock!

  41. Ohh I’d love to own this….. I’ve been a priest fan since school, and when Point of Entry came out (you do the math ….. s), before British Steel. Second band I ever saw, around ‘80/81, I saw Maiden first, on their first ever headlining tour, with the original lineup. Sigh…. I digress… I love Spectors, and I love Ians’ solid bass lines…. but this is way beyond my means right now. A fabulous thing.

  42. I first saw AiC supporting Megadeth back in the early 90s. They were immense, I could have left before Megadeth came on and still been really happy. Originally I thought it was an odd mix, but they really fitted in. I've been listening to a lot of AiC in recent weeks, plus the Mad Season album. That then led on to Brad, Green River, Temple of the Dog...

  43. So 2 weeks with nothing on the thread, then a flurry of "I'm out" and "Does this mean I'm out?" Were you all hid behind the sofa waiting for someone to break cover, or did you really all buy stuff yesterday? 😁

  44. Thanks to everyone for the responses. Certainly leaves a lot to think about. The body is fine and thr front of the head stock is OK too. There is some lifting at the back of the head stock but nothing that gets in the way. It just seems to be the neck from the top nut to the body. Probably hasn't helped being exposed to 20 odd years on nicotine filled clubs and venues! It is stripped at the moment but here are some more pics. I am keen to keep it as original as possible as I was the second owner from new having bought it from a friend who never gigged it, but I need to be able to play it.

  46. It doesn't make any sense regardless of the type of amp it is connected to, your resistor would have to match the wattage of any speaker it was connected to as half of your power would be going to heat up the resistor, which means it needs to be very big and bolted to some metal to get rid of the heat and you are wasting half of your power. So if you have a valve amp, connect it to the correct impedance output, and if you have a solid state amp, you can put more power into the speaker, and use more power, just to throw away that power heating a resistor, giving you the same volume if you had connected it without the resistor. The Harkte has a dual voice coil apparently, so I guess you are only using half of it in one of the modes.

  47. My dad always did this. He’d setup and always play the same pentatonic lic in G. I do the same most days but in B across 4 octaves lol. He played in a 20 piece big band on a Wednesday evening and I used to go along as a youngster before joining on trumpet and heard one of the other guys say, “Roys here!!!” when dad played his thing as they were all getting set up. Happy Days.
