Perfectly understandable. We're all different. I understand how gigging a lot can work for some and not others. I answer to no one and can sleep as late as I want. I'm single by design, as a matter of fact, I broke up with the last woman I dated because I knew she didn't get rock & roll or gigging. Our guitarists wife comes to every single gig with him, she's never missed a show in the 7 years I've been with the band. I asked her why; "Because I love watching my husband do something he loves" That's the kind of lady I need to meet. No woman is ever going to give me any type of grief about gigging. The money I earn from gigging means so much more to me than the salary I drew when I was a part of the traditional workforce. And I had a great paying career. I still feel that getting paid to have fun and do something you love is, well you can't beat it. Sure there's little inconveniences and every gig won't be great, but I still wouldn't trade away gigging for anything. I'm not important enough to hate any genre of music as long as it's professional and played well and I get paid to do it. I truly love this business and I love playing. BTW, sorry about the rant. In October of 1978 I saw Slade play the first night of six in a nightclub chain. Very little advertising and the bouncers were turning away fans who weren't dressed "smart but casual". Slade played to 19 punters in a 1000 capacity venue; the smallest crowd in their professional career. they still talk about it yet. When they came on Noddy Holder said "Jeeesus, did you all come on the same bus?"2 points

Ableton is fine for programming drums, however it's arguably not the best DAW for 'band/instrument' recording, it's way more geared towards electronic music (which it's amazing at). As such you may want to look at Garageband, or Logic (running in it's simplified mode......allows you to get more advanced when you're ready), as mentioned above, they both have very useable drum sequencers. Fun fact, although Logic's drum tracks appear as an audio wave at first, you can simply drag the part onto a spare soft-instrument track and it will show you the midi score......you could then apply any drum sounds soft-instrument (DFH, Tooktrak etc) on that track. Allows you to pull together drum grooves very easily, then apply your own preferred sounds to that groove. Si2 points

I find them an exceptional band. I know a lot of folk don't like JK, but he's a great front man & a great vocalist too. The bassline in this is fantabulous...2 points

It might be better to accept that than spend hours digging through the box mountain in the loft to find the certificate, and then when I've found it, some clever so-and-so will say I photoshopped it!2 points

I would look at the Pedaltrain Nano/Metro series. They have a planner app on their site to help your work out which model will be the right fit. Then if you want a flexible power supply that will fit underneath then you'll be after a Cioks DC5 (sold by HotRox) or a Onespot CS6 (Andertons currently cheapest). For cables I would recommend a solderless kit like Evidence Audio SIS or Tightrope for their ultra low profile plugs and the ability to change lengths as your board evolves.2 points

I've just told the band I've been playing in (I've never been able to think of it as "my band") that I'm leaving. Two reasons: complete lack of communication, while playing or between practice sessions, and difference in taste in music. It's an indie-pop originals band, not my favourite style, but I was grateful for the offer to play with them, I liked the freedom to develop interesting original basslines, and I've put a lot of effort into it. But it just hasn't gelled. I've played open jams where I felt more musical connection with people I'd never met before than with this band after many hours over many months of playing together. Earlier tonight I talked to the guy who put this together to play his originals, and told him I was deeply sorry but I had to leave, that I respected what he was trying to do but couldn't remain part of it. He accepted "musical differences", but became very defensive when I tried to say - as I've said many times before - that I can't play in a band where nobody makes eye contact while playing. That he didn't thank me for the time I've put in on the arrangements I've developed for his songs confirms my decision. One good thing is that I handled it through a couple of phone calls followed by a carefully under-stated email rather than turning up for a practice and throwing a hissy-fit halfway through. So now I have to find a Manchester-based blues band... :-)1 point

To slightly tidy up my area of the stage, I bought one of these - search on eBay for "Fisual Zip Cable Tidy Wrap". They're about a tenner. It's easy to use - you don't need to thread the cables through or anything like that, because it unzips fully along its length. Just first roughly gather the cables together, then wrap the cable tidy around and zip it up. My gear position, power supply positions, and general stage logistics vary from gig to gig - but in this instance, it was two power cables (monitor and pedal board), USB (to charge my phone), and an XLR send to the desk. Other gigs I might also have an instrument cable in there and a monitor XLR from the desk. I've survived years without the cable tidy but it all does seem a bit neater now.1 point

Hi Bill looks like our posts crossed. there's no doubts about the effects you mention or that the Q of the cab is changed by filling the airspace but I've seen all sorts of claims for 'damping' from the use of high density materials to kill panel resonances through placement to kill standing waves within the cab and so on and so on. We'll both be aware of some of the claims and counter claims about damping materials. Without decent software and test gear it's not an easy thing to be able to say put x amount of stuffing in this part of your cab. Some of the treatments I've seen in commercial cabs leaves the impression that they've done it just so it looks right. Kevin, my advice is to find an old polyester filled duvet and experiment with the material in that, Dacron is just the brand name. using the material to hand lets you do a lot of experimenting at little or no cost.1 point

lets revive this dying thread!!! i purchased a bananana matryoshka 2nd hand here a month or so ago. First time i tried it it sounded good, but not great.... my impressions were it was noisy, glitchy and temperamental..... so i put it on the shelf and haven't touched it since.... until yesterday when i decided to make a list of the pedals i should sell to make room/cash for other unnecessary equipment. i actually put the bananana in the pile to be sold. After work i decided to plug it in to give it one last go before i put it up for sale (i diddnt expect it to hang around)..... ....... ohhhh myyyy goooooood god, this thing sounds amazing!!!! it turns out the first time i tried it i must have been driving the input too hot as it was pinning the filter against the roof every time i touched the strings. but with the volume rolled back on my sandberg it really opened the pedal up.The filter became responsive, the noise and glitches dissapeared and i was in synth nirvana. Some of the subs that this tiny pedal can put out are simply astonishing. its reactive to the strength of the string attack like no filter ive ever used. (and ive tried a fair few!!!) my favorite setting is the gated fuzz (orange) setting with the ctrl wide open. no dry and out 1+2 fully open. oct fully up and resonance at 2 ish. this pedal is a seriously powerful piece of gear and i encourage anybody into synth pedals to try one. needless to say... now mine isn't going anywhere! edit. added a quick sample of the pedal 1st part - dubstep style riff 2nd part - demo of how controllable the filter sweep... into more riffing bananana sample.mp31 point

I got a great dub tone out of a Stingray due to the active EQ, I imagine one of the double pickup versions of the Stingray, Sterling, Sabre or Bongo would be even better.1 point

Our singer Tony has an entertainment agency with lots of different acts from Laptop Johnny DJs and solo tribute acts to 8 piece function bands. He lives in Wythenshawe so most of his acts and music venues are based around Stockport and South Manchester. His agency has a few blues bands and he is often looking for dep musicians or permanent replacements. I'll ask him if he knows of anybody needing a bass player if you like?1 point

This will give you some righteously clean and deep dub bass sounds. They are not cheap new but occasionally they come around used on ebay. http://www.alembic.com/prod/sf2.html I use mine only if I'm using decent cabs that can deal with heavy bottom end.1 point

Sometime I think I'm the only fool 65 year old with the same spirit for gigging I had when I was 12. I'd be in heaven if I had gigs 4 nights a week. I love late nights, love the club bar scene, love the money and most of all the attention. I must have signed 5 CDs and several gig posters this past Saturday night. I love that kind of stuff. Yes, of course they are. You have a nice sit down... I just have to make a quick phone call...1 point

Of course, that's different - guitarists have always been a lot more deluded than bass players. Anyway, I've got a brand new car and it's made me a really good driver, so there!1 point

Yes, I meant 'one's head'. It's true though, it's not the bass, it's what you do with it. No matter how many basses I play, at the end of the day me playing a bass sounds a lot like me playing a bass - regardless of what it is, or how much it cost.1 point

The soundtrack to The Lost Boys was pretty much the soundtrack to my early teens. Still love it now. Also love Busy Malone and was lucky enough to do be in the house band for a production of it in theatre a couple of years ago.1 point

Just bought Jamie's superb Xotic XP-1. Terrific chap who went the extra mile - in fact, extra 60 miles! - to deliver it in person. Bass was just as described and plays like a dream, and Jamie was friendly and communicative throughout. Cheers!1 point

Bought a Markbass combo from Jamie and used it as an opportunity to visit the Kent coast to collect. Had a thoroughly nice day and picked up my bargainacious combo at the same time. Great comms throughout, couldn't be happier with the combo. Cheers Jamie, hope to do more business with you in future!1 point

Harley Benton RiB-shorty project is done. Detail pictures: This was a smooth and simple conversion, only minor setback was the breaking out if the chunk of wood while drilling the hole for the sidejack. Verdict: This one was the best made HB instrument I've had in my hands until now. Nice tight(ish) fitting neck/neck-pocket, frets are level and there are no sharp fret ends, only two tuners were a little bit misaligned that were fixable without any 'filling and drilling'. I replaced one bridge saddle due to the fact that the height adjustment screws were not at an straight angle to the intonation screw (the original one worked okay but I don't like these small disturbing details). I also placed a neck shim, this was not necessary but I prefer to have the strings a little bit higher in the bridge position. These Chinese toasters sound amazingly Rick-ish, even though they are dual coils (in series), the round rolling sound with a bite, the only minus is that they are slightly microphonic.1 point
