David Ellefson co-founded Megadeth in the early-80's and was with the band until they split in 2002, after which he tried to sue the other co-founder and failed. The band reformed a couple of years later and he was not part of the party until he returned as a hired goon in 2010.

Roger Waters. Played with Pink Floyd, tried to break up the band, failed, rejoined for the Live8 gig. Though we assume not as a full band member 😉

Seem to remember Ronnie Wood ( then Ron Wood and playing bass) got fired from the Jeff Beck Group and soon after reinstated, when a replacement couldn’t be found for a US tour.

David Vincent left after the first four Morbid Angel records only to inexplicably return four releases later to make a widely panned album, before exiting again.

Guigsy from Oasis dropped out more than once, I recall, only to come back again.

Did anyone notice?

Sticking with my extreme metal theme, Necrobutcher from Mayhem left the band after Dead committed suicide, returning later to keep the band going until today.

In the interim, Count Grishnak, who recorded the bass on the their second release, was required to leave the band and society at large after murdering Euronymous, and burning down some churches on the side. His bass parts were to be erased at the request of his victim's family, but were left on the record. Not quite a reinstatement, but similar.

Band politics, eh?

Paul McCartney, died 9th November 1966, replaced by a lookalike early in 1967.

Opinions vary as to whether or not this constitutes a reinstatement, but John Lennon apparently thought it was, so that's settled.

Next question, please?

Glen Matlock? Sacked by the Sex Pistols in early 1977, rejoined in 1996 for the Filthy Lucre reunion tour as his replacement Sid Vicious was somewhat unavailable having died in February 1979.

He actually played on all he studio recordings, too.  Such was younger and prettier so was the 'face' of the earlier live stuff and publicity material.

Craig Adams left and re-joined the Mission.

I can't remember his name but the original bassist is back with Ratt... problematic in that I am now the one who has publicly raised this!
