For many years I use to play and love a Warwick Dolphin Pro2, it served me very well. I know they have an interesting heritage, best summed up as ‘The bastard child of Warwick’ (coined by someone else), I sold it on here years ago. Fast forward to now, I found locally on Farcebook marketplace a pretty much identical model, slightly different colour scheme but same vintage. Picked it up last night from a lovely chap at a reasonable price, so brought it home. Fair to say, I could see the potential but it obviously hadn’t had a lot of love over the years. I fully stripped it back removed all hardware, and deep cleaned it, polished the frets (which were not worn too much at all, result) oiled the fretboard, several times. Checked truss rod moved. Tightened up all the machine heads, which were loose. Adjusted the nut as it had a bit of card under the G string. The jack socket needed replacement too, again, luckily I had one in my spares cupboard. Luckily I had a new replacement bridge in my spares as the original was very manky and all the saddles were corroded. I then put a new set if Warwick red label strings on it and did a full Warwick set up, stage by stage, ( forgot how much I enjoyed setting up Warwicks). All in all, 4 hours work, a new bridge, set of strings, a replacement jack socket and a lot of lemon oil and cleaners and duraglit later, and I have a sensational bass to show for my troubles, it has come out better than expected. Very pleased with the result, a really playable bass, and a world apart from what I started with.17 points

**SOLD** An absolute gorgeous bass. Handmade by the guys in Alpher basses. Real punchy pickup on this with the split coil. Very comfortable and lightweight. Purchased this from Alpher last year. This bass is the first of the Hammerhead range which has now been moved into production on the Alpher. Pheral - The guys told me that it's only the neck that has been manufactured by a 3rd party company. The Body and all electrics and hardware are all done in house. Regarding the flexibility. It depends on which version you have. The original version had a very wide range on the filters. Later and current versions this was reduced which does make it easier to use. I do have a demo of a Wal with the 01 in it. https://m.soundcloud.com/acguitars Ralph Wal is the track. However I need to stress that copying the Wal was never really the intention. That could have been done but I was looking for my own thing and I think we achieved that. Also have to point out I have been ploughing this lonely track for nearly 20 years and while filter preamps are more popular now with a few more options it has been hard and expensive work flying the flag for them over the years. We have further refined it over the years and continue to do so but that is mainly focused on the DFM. But has not excluded the 01. Work on something with John East at the moment. At the end of the day copying Wal is not my goal. Yes it is a huge influence but I want an ACG identity don’t want to be the guy that does the Wal knock offs I will leave that to others.7 points

Bought this here a couple of weeks ago. It's the lightest, fastest HB jazz I've ever played. Oh and the shell pink finish is really lovely. I gigged it this weekend. The previous gig I had used my Sandberg California - a truly beautiful instrument to play. I have to say there was absolutely no drop in quality. None. Not in sound, feel, balance or playability. Anyone trying to convince me that price is any indication of quality, or 'you get what you pay for' has their work cut out I'm afraid.6 points

I have a new bass arriving at the end of the week, so in accordance with my strict one in, one out policy I am - somwhat reluctantly - offering this late 80s Aria Pro Bass II SB-ELT up for sale. The bass is really nice to play with a neck that feels very much like a Jazz bass. It was made in Korea and everything is original including the hardshell case. It has plenty of tone options with what I think of as coil tap switches (not actually sure if that's what they are!). It's in a well used condition but I would say 'well used' rather than 'abused'. Please bear in mind this bass must be around 35 years old so don't expect something new from the factory. It was marketed in some countries as the SB-RSZ, the Rudy Sarzo signature model. It's in an attractive Paduak colour. I thought it might be heavy with the solid brass-looking bridge and brass nut, but it comes in on my luggage scales as a pretty reasonable 9lb 3oz. It has quite a few surface marks on the back which are visible in some light but not others. There is some corrosion to the washers on the front of the machine heads, but nothing that affects them working. There are a couple of small dings I have tried to capture and a small dink to the edge of the rosewood fretboard at the 16th fret. There is some fret wear on to lower frets on the E string but I would say they have plenty of life in them yet. There is also some finger staining to the rosewood fretboard. I've tried to picture everything I've mentioned above. Having listed all the issues I have probably made the bass sound worse than it actually is - it's a really nice guitar to play. Trial and collection from near Tenby in Pembrokeshire is preferred, but I could post in the UK for around £25.6 points -
Happened to me about ten years ago. I had been playing with The Wirebirds for a year and a bit, getting plenty of gigs. My mother -in-law was living with us back then (no longer around) and had a carer come in a couple of times a week to take her to the shops, etc. One day, there was a new carer putting MiL's shopping into the fridge, and MiL mentioned that she (the carer) liked singing, so I naturally mentioned the band and she asked if she could come and sing with us sometime. Then she mentioned her previous band and the tours, hanging out with the guys from Led Zeppelin, etc, and I was sure she was a dreamer. Anyway, she came along to our rehearsal a week later, but then I had found out who she was and told the band, they basically said it was just a fantasy on her part. Then she came in to the rehearsal room, tiny, shy, no way a rock star. She asked if we knew 'Rock Me Baby' (well, we wouldn't have been much of a blues band if we didn't!), she asked if we could do in A, which was our usual key for that song. We played the intro, and I could see the rest of the band waiting for her squeak out a few words, then she grabbed the mic and our jaws dropped. She could sing the blues like Janis Joplin. We were getting better gigs on the back of her being with us, people were bringing her old records to our gigs to get them autographed. She was Jenny Hahn, front woman for Babe Ruth, and we played dozens of pub gigs and local festivals with her. Her she is singing Janis's 'Move Over'. I'll never equal the thrill of standing a few feet from that voice!6 points

Facebook is also bad as a seller. In quite a few years selling on BC I have never had a bad transaction or dealt with time wasters. I've only declined one sale that seemed a bit fishy (someone with a new account asking me to post to a PO box). .... Facebook on the other hand - trying to sell a keyboard lately really had me losing faith in humanity! I had about 10 obvious scam attempts, and about the same amount of time wasters, and so many of these:6 points

I am selling my 5 string Harley-Benton MB5 SBK Deluxe bass guitar, can be bought new (when in stock) from Thomann in Germany, just read the customer reviews on Thomanns website if you want to know more. I know I'll have a better luck with an item like this on FB marketplace (already posted) locally but am enjoying the irony of posting this here in the company of the gorgeous stuff like Wal's, USA fenders and vintage stuff - it gets its moment in the spotlight. If you live locally or happen to be driving up the A49 past Tenbury Wells in the near future why not pop in and pick up a 5 string bass for less than the cost of a decent strap? Its a cheap bass, but way better than some of the horrible things on ebay / Amazon imho! I am fond of it, just need the space tbh. I think it sounds great, pretty funky ... It is as standard other than the battery box which I fitted and has no impact on the bass and is only visible at the rear. It is in very good overall condition but has a modest doink on the back where I goofed with my router, I covered with tape as shown in pictures, this absolutely no impact on the playing experience and is not visible when the bass is being played. I have the purple scratch plate which I removed and could be easily re-fitted by the new owner if desired, I prefer the look without it. It a perfectly playable 5 string bass, a base for a project, maybe you want to finish your next gig with a Pete Townsend / Hendrix flourish? Or at this price could find any number of uses! I bought this 1973 Rick conversion from Gunnar of this parish (aka Studio GC) last year. Its cool AF, mojo'd to heck and seriously modded. Please read the previous FS thread (link below) for details of mods. Has "Crue" roughly carved into upper bout which Gunnar covered with a sticker but I think looks kind of punk/rock 'n roll cool. According to my digital scales, weighs c.8.5 pounds (Gunnar's scales weighed lower) which is still lightweight for a Rick. Comes with a box loads of bits (spare pickups, pickup cover, wiring, and a somewhat battered alternate Hipshot bridge [I reinstalled the original Rick bridge as shown in my pics]). Wearing nicely worn in TI flats and plays very slickly. Reason for selling: I am struggling with the 33.25" scale length compared with my Mustang bass due to ongoing left hand issues (blame the horse) plus continuing medical bills. I paid £1700 and have since added a spendy Mono Sleeve gig bag which I would throw in for the same total price (edit: I also added a Rickysounds treble pickup bezel for ease of finger style playing). Collection from a public place in SW13 London or shipping at cost - however, I would need to source a box if shipping is required, which may delay matters by a few days.4 points -

Not done much of an update for a few days as work has got in the way. I found a design issue in the way I'd used Fusion 360 and unpicking it took a long time. In the end I rolled back the design history, fixed it and then spent a long time fixing the issues as I rolled forward. In the end, I used the time to fix the issue AND to make the guitar a lot simpler to print. As I was struggling with PETG warping, I used 3dLac to hopefully adhere the corners down an keep them down. Even reducing the size, cleaning the bed, using 3dLac spray, I was still getting a tiny bit of lift on the pointy outside corners. In the end I put a 5mm brim on and 3DLac and that seems to have solved the issue. The downside now is that I have to remove the brim, but a deburr tool does that very well. Six are no intervention printing, so kick them off at any time and they print through to the end, no staying up until 01:30 to embed nuts. Two do require nuts but I can't change that. I've also made the plywood backbone wider, simply because I can. That was the design issue before. When I changed the width of the plywood backbone, the whole design blew up in a big way. The older version with slightly narrower plywood has shown that the guitar doesn't bend with "normal" bass strings, so thats one milestone achieved. I have all the control bits now, including decent bass strings, so push on now to get it all printed. Another 4-5 days to finish the printing off Rob4 points

At risk of sounding like a "well in my day, we 'ad it tough" crusty old fart, when I think back to the days when I was starting out on the bass, you had to spend quite a bit of money to get anything even halfway decent. £140 now gets you a really very nice Harley Benton Jazz; that's the equivalent of £45 in 1983. Forty five quid. That wouldn't even have bought a dog-legged piece of Korean balsawood back then, much less a good quality solid-wood working bass. It seems to me that these days you actually have to work quite hard to find a genuinely bad instrument. This can only be a very good thing. And having read this again a couple of hours later, yes, I do sound exactly like a "well in my day, we 'ad it tough" crusty old fart4 points

Decided to pull the trigger on this Vintera II today. Picked up secondhand at GG for about £250 less than the new price but it's still got the cellophane on the pickguard and neck plate. We are getting used to each other this evening. Initial impressions are very good : super easy to play, wide range of tones. Nice and light, my back and shoulders will thank me after long gigs. I'm feeling like it needs a lighter right hand touch than my long scale basses. Have ordered a set of LaBella 760F-MUS strings. Rehearsal tomorrow so will see how it fits into a band setting.4 points

Three gigs for me this week. First of two with ‘The ELO Experience’ was at Newark on Friday. A fine medium sized theatre that we’ve done annually for a long time. Had a slight technical hitch at the beginning of the first set, but managed to overcome it and all went well. Saturday night saw us at The Corn Exchange in Kings Lynn. Another of my favourite venues that seats around 750 and it was virtually full with a lovely crowd, all up for a good night. Had some of my family come along who I’d not seen for a while, including my nephew who brought with him some superb sausage rolls and brownies from his cafe in Cambridge which the band and crew devoured. The square outside the venue was taken over by a visiting fairground, so the town was very busy all evening. Bit tricky getting our vehicles in and out but well worth the hassle. I”m counting down the gigs before I leave the band now, so just 9 more to go. 🙁 Final gig for me was tonight with my acoustic duo Milestone at our regular venue ‘The Lookout’ in Scarborough harbour. A really high tide when we arrived looked a bit of a worry at one point but didn’t block our way to the venue. An absolutely cracking evening, my guitarist mate Gary was on top form and dazzled the audience with his playing. Some great requests as ever, including ’Galveston’ , ‘ A certain smile’ and Bat out of Hell’ ! We’re back there in two weeks time, can’t wait.4 points

Few little scuffs/bumps here and there, but nothing drastic (see photos). The frets/fretboard is in perfect condition. Comes with brand new (installed) set of DR Hi-Beam strings. Not sure how the Wal was set up to work with the 01 John did the work as he knows the guy. This was very early doors with the preamp. My proprietary setup with the DFM and Multicoils does indeed buffer and sum the individual sets of coils.3 points

If it's an intermittent fault, and it sounds like it, it could be really hard to track down and could be in something you've already decided is fine. Two strategies - try and replicated the fault with minimal kit in the signal path, then add things until you get an issue. Second, the cable testers @dmccombe7 suggests usually have an ability to detect intermittent faults, even very brief ones, by lighting an LED if there's even a brief interruption to continuity.3 points

What doesn’t it do! Ha. At its core it’s a distortion pedal and bitcrusher, but allows for incredible manipulation of the signal by slamming it into one of a bazillion wave tables. This Pro version also has saveable patches that can be recalled. Multiple expression control and a blend (which the original badly needed). It’s basically a noise makers dream come true with near unlimited noisy, digitalised, overdriven and low fi sounds, as well as really great drive and bit crushing/sample rate reduction tones.3 points

Hi The Eq01 is not the pre-amp I use in my top of the range Uber Series basses. I use the DFM in conjunction with my own Multi Coil pickups. This pre-amp has several features that the 01 does not have including the pic attack on a push/pull. While the EQ01 is an excellent pre-amp the DFM is what I call my 4th generation pre-amp have been in development for many years and started with 01. The 01 has seen several tweaks over the years as well and the later/current model is closer to the Wal than the original version.. The DFM/MC combination is however only available in my Uber Series basses.3 points

Also today I managed to get the back-seam-joint-inlay-thing (BSJIT for short) done. You can buy these for a fiver....But....it then won't exactly match the binding that I use for the perimeter of the guitar. And if I did that you'd all throw things at me. So I take the slightly slower option and do it myself. Basically it's a strip of the bindng, then a 0.5mm strip of white veneer, then a strip of 0.5mm black veneer. They'll get glued vertically into a channel routed into the back: You Routing the channel I use simply run the router along a straight edge taped down to the back. It's difficult to get it exactly centred so one trick is just to keep adding strips of tape to the side of the router base till you get it exactly right. You can see from these test routs that I got it right on the 3rd time (ie 2 extra pieces of tape). You can then happily rout knowing it's going to be exactly centred... Once the channels done, it's they just a question of sticking the strips of wood into the channel, then gluing it all generously with superglue. Then make some lovely shavings: And hey presto! It's done..2 points

I've been trying to get the idea of a tribute to Cheap Trick off the ground for years (who?). Absolutely it is a niche market but Cheap Trick have been MY band for almost 46 years and I had to create this tribute as they were never going to call me! Long story short (it started 12 years ago LOL), I finalised the line up of CHEAT TRICK this year with 3 other guys who were massive CT fans... and it fell apart again within 2 months due to issues with the guitarist. In stepped the guitarist from my other covers band who is a technically brilliant player and he got us off the ground, mainly due to the fact he could write out and read the main song structures and was ready for a debut gig in 4 weeks. Sadly he wasn't a fan of the band we were trying to recreate and after a year of waiting for him to actually cop the style of Rick Nielsen, we had to let him go as he just couldn't understand that a tribute should at least be playing in a similar style (he's more Paul Gilbert/Steve Vai), a 1000 notes a minute isn't Cheap Trick! This week, we organised to audition a guy who we knew to be a Cheap Trick fan... BOOM! He walked into the studio and proceeded to run through 30 songs with us, emulating Rick Nielsen's style and chord/note choice to a 'T'. Not only that but songs we hadn't even asked him to look at, that he'd never tried to play, were handled like he wrote them. I have to say that I left the studio space with a grin a mile wide and buzzing to be chasing gigs this year to get out and about. Has anyone else had that Eureka moment or conversely that dread that someone in the band just wasn't the right person and you can't progress?2 points

Thanks everyone- and @Madein1962 for the Ric-specifics. Given that the bass isn't getting a lot of use at the moment, and it still plays very nicely, I think the best plan is leave things as they are, but to get at least a couple of luthiers to look at it and scope them out regarding their expertise. If they can do the work properly then get them to provide an estimate for future reference.2 points

We have to buy our own earpieces, we have been recommended KZ ones off Amazon which are pretty cheap, decent set for £20. The person who recommends them to me is a pro sound engineer who comes to our church and he said they stack up well to his £800 custom moulded ones he uses in his job. I don’t think it’s much to buy your own IEMS, they are the price of a set of strings. It was considered buying sets for the musicians but we have I think at least 50 people who would need them and no one wants to share a set - hygenie issues etc. Also people take them home by mistake etc, lose the tips. I think we have 4 or 5 room mics to feed back audience noise, that can be included in your personal mix as much as you want. We do have a digital monitor desk which is manned so it’s easy to get a good mix. Everyone is on IEM so there isn’t any competition between musicians. The only person who has an amp is the guitarist if they want one and that’s mic’ed up in a back room. I can get pics on Friday of what we use if anyone is interested.2 points

Fantastic! Doubtless far beyond affordable, but it's wonderful to see them back. Why they didn't do this instead of the Mickey Mouse 4005 in the first place is beyond me but they got there in the end! Dear old JH always swore he'd never reissue these 😄2 points

I have. I was depping in a band that was on its last legs. Two of the band suggested a get together with a keyboard player one of them knew vaguely. Within the first bar of jamming we all hit it off, and it has never been anything less than that since. It was a remarkable moment that has continued. Probably the most fortunate experience of my musical life, I reckon.2 points

Woke Disney +, woka cola , the Green Party , the Labour Party , the Conservative Party .snp , Liberal Democrats As for BT , they're infinity set top box was pants when I was with them . Being told my wardrobe was the problem with their crap signals proves how rubbish they were . When I moved home , they sent a letter threatening me with debt collectors to my post office temporary address for £38 . Thing is I settled up when I moved , but their administration system said otherwise .Also, they were the last utility company to get disconnected when I moved . Truly awful company . I could put Unilever , procter and gamble and edf also . However, as procter and gamble and Unilever have so many household staple items , it would be nigh on impossible to avoid completely . As for Edf , they are one of the big energy companies that are going nowhere and smaller companies can still be swallowed up , amalgamated or dissolved etc. If edf stopped harassing me for smart meters they wouldn't be a problem . Apple for example should be on my list , but I still use their electronics .2 points
