  1. Hey @Thunderpaws, I'm super glad you enjoyed the Glasgow gig, I'm actually the bass player for the Second Sons! Nice picture too! We're working on an album right now which is hopefully going to be out later this month! https://www.instagram.com/georgepricebass/ - Here's my insta with more tour photos! It was also a pleasure to work with GVF, they are great, great guys and Sam is a monster player! Anyway, all the best and see you soon maybe! George

  6. They said they'd retired, but now there's film of Dirk Lerxt and Pratt rehearsing together again and sounding, well, remarkable. Perhaps they'll surprise us with a reunion tour? Fingers crossed. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2005220929507190&id=1202966273065997

  7. Sounds like everyone had an utterly dreadful day, as I suspected you would. I'm really glad I had to work and miss the whole f%$&*ing thing.

  8. Had a great time nice, nice to meet some new people and catch up with the old. Too many nice basses to be comfortable!

  9. The HPF is highly valuable as an EQ tool as well though. If you set it to cut at 100 Hz and boost the bass control at 30 or 50Hz the net result may be a boost at something like 60-200Hz depending on amount of bass boost and details of you bass control's response curves, with a steep dropoff below the bass peaking. Voila, you've just changed everything about how you tailor your low end. By way of example, here's what happens in one of my amps when I set the bass control at 6/10 (a mild boost), then sweep the HPF over its entire range, which in my case is something like 25-130Hz.: So there's your boost in the low mids, if you want it, although a mild gain tweak may be needed too. The beauty of this approach is that you can tailor your bass EQ around specific room nodes that account for much or all of that "boominess" we all fight against so often. In practice this is a lot easier than it looks at first blush, at least IME. It's a very well known old school approach to EQ, as seen in classic Pultec EQs for instance. But if you just want to kill out of band mush, all good to that as well.

  10. I had a gig last night at a venue out of town (Aberdeen) where they have decent equipment, so this time I did not bring my own in order to make transport easy (we're an 8-piece). I had played there once before, and I used my own gear that time, as it was a weekend of gigs for which I already had my stuff. They had a Hiwatt 200 tube head and matching 810 cab onstage. I like 810s. I like how with relatively low volumes you still 'feel' the air moving. But I struggled to get a sound I liked out of that thing. I had to turn down the bass a lot and boost treble and mids... so I suspect this is much like the Orange Terror heads where flat is mids&treble all the way up and bass all the way down. But even then... it felt far too woofy. I guess if we were a dub band I might have liked it better... I missed the sound of my Mesa D800+ and the two Barefaced Two10 stacked vertically. That's what I used last time, and I could still feel the air moving but it sounded great, powerful, defined... well, at least when the trombone player allowed me. He likes my setup a lot and often just stands in front of the mini stack, smiling, playing his trombone while humping an invisible bear

  11. Good move. I'm not sure when production ceased. I bought it new at the start of 1990, the serial no dates it as late 89, which makes sense as they had to order it in. I know the later models changed the PUPs to EMG & then they stopped doing the PJ config not long after. The bass was originally black but 7 years ago, I decided to strip it down. I had intended on painting it, but when I saw the grain, I decided to oil & wax it. Here's a link to some pics of that process... https://flic.kr/s/aHsjuw23Lc There used to be an Ibanez website with loads of info about discontinued instruments, but I can't find it just now.

  12. I've been playing about 45 years now, never put my bass through any FX and no one has ever suggested that I should. What did he feel was missing from your sound that a pedal would cure?

  13. Also depends on what the requirements of the band are, other bassists present might have though "thank god he isn`t using a rake load of effects that would have really facked that song up".

  14. If the drummer has to carry the kit and a PA round, what is the advantage over a regular kit? I tire very quickly of prima donnas who insist on having "their sound" on stage to the detriment of everyone else's. If any band member can't understand that the overall sound of the band is more important than what they personally sound like, I'd be getting rid of them or walking.

  15. If you’re just playing four chords then perhaps, but I find a quick glance now and then is necessary when reading tricky music, or jumping up to do high fills etc.

  17. Are you running it off the front pickup only? If not, try that. Below low A will sound muddy. I’d probably only play down there with the BOD if playing mostly clean signal with a small amount of sub rolled in to beef it up. Playing the soloed sub voice down that low isn’t terribly musical-sounding.

  22. It's Hiromi. Look here, Hugues is selling one of the previous generation (normal size body thickness), the Presentation II is similar to the one of Auslander : Watch this if you want to see Anthony Jackson playing that new Presentation II. Flashback is one of my favourite track :

  23. You've done a grand job refinishing that bass. There is something very beautiful about natural wood grain - to my eyes anyway!

  24. Just like my Status Electro II 6 Jonas Hellborg model from November 2001 in pristine condition : The low B here is very well defined with the Thomastik JR (nickel roundwound) fitted for the moment. I'll put some Fodera stainless steel roundwounds later (medium scale as it's a 82 cm scale, Jonas Hellborg being Swedish, the scale is in metric measure which gives 32 9/32 inches scale in imperial measure).

  25. that is so funny on a similar note.. our rhythm guitarist left , he did lots of BVs and harmonies , so the singer buys a multi voice harmonics box to compensate. This box is uber complicated and uses lead guitarist plugged in to analyse the chords to create the harmonies . Neither knew how to use it effectively and very nearly caused the implosion of the band , especially when I started taking a microphone to add a touch of focus to the vocal line up

  26. Indeed, with IEMs, the monitor mix generally remains static - or at least in the ballpark - between gigs. Just recall the mix on the desk and you just have foh to worry with. Better still ditch all amps and you'll only have to eq for the room. Drummers and guitarists. Always the pain in the donkey you can rely on.

  27. All of the above. I've left loads of bands due to one or the other and I'm now very relaxed about never gigging again. My particular hates though... Band members who don't rehearse the song and actually try to learn it at a rehearsal. Once had a keyboard player who turned up to a rehearsal with a brand new keyboard. He took it out of the box and started reading the manual and just made bleepy noises for the next two hours. Also had a drummer once who insisted on banging and crashing his drums every moment we weren't actually rehearsing a song. He didn't last long. Drunks. "I can drink xxxx and it doesn't affect my performance". Oh yes it does. Singers who say "if you buy us all a pint we'll play another one". I'm already tearing down my gear by the time he says that. Singers who say "I think we should play some swing." Really? You can't even sing the rock songs properly, what makes you'll sound like Frank? Oops... beginning to rant...

  28. Don't like to say I told you so, but... well... I did. In any normal band the drummer would have been told to take a hike with this attitude. In this band he's the band leader's son so don't expect much to change any time soon.

  30. If we're assuming a forty-odd year future, that's a couple of generations. There are no more roller-rinks (well, very few...) which were once all the rage. Similarly, few pubs now have piano ('joanna'...) sing-song evenings; used to be nightly. There may well be rock/pop/live music gigs to be had in forty years time, but it's not something I'd be betting on (although it's true that I don't bet, either..!). Doubtful..? Certainly not a certainty, I'd say (for better or worse; all may be 'virtual' in future years, or radio-active ashes..! ).

  32. #bassurbanmyth 30+ years of playing active basses, changing batteries every 9-12 months whether needed or not. Neither this nor any of the rest of the “I’d never have an active bass...” horror stories have ever happened to me.

  33. That relic was not done well, I would definitely not pay more for that. Why are we talking about respects etc. The most obvious thing is to get it attached to your towbar and drag it around a bit. You never order just one chip from the chippy, get some more, and gravy to go with

  35. We have rules, and as the band is an equal vote thing problems are few. We all agree on a song and learn our parts at home once the key and version are agreed. If anyone is not up to speed on a new song its put to bed till next rehearsal to allow anyone struggling to catch up. A song is not on the gig list till it is right. No noodling, ever, not even at rehearsal. That includes vocals and drums. Tune up only silently, almost every tuner has a volume mute. We practice quietly so errors are obvious and easy to rectify. If any member really dislikes a new song it is dropped.

  37. There seems to be more chance of the bass being damaged by the hanger falling out of the wall. There's an old thread here: It's advised not to hang an instrument on an external wall in case of temperature or humidity changes, but I'm not sure if that's still true with properly insulated walls. External walls are more likely to be structurally strong enough.

  39. This is the single most important bit of advice when it comes to batteries in basses. As long as you follow it a new battery should be good for several months. I've heard people on here say that they change batteries once a year whether the bass needs it or not but I suspect that those people are using more than one bass over the 12 month period, if you're using the same bass all the time I'm not sure that you'll get that much.

  44. A fireworks party at a pub...unil they were forbidden to do the Fireworks by Health and Safety! What is the world coming to? V unpopular with the band by announcing 'Hard To Handle' (which they all hate, and was not onthe set list) as an encore, then congratulated when the pub went wild!
