At last, a few decent video of something I am involved with. The Michael Spearman Trio live at The Fleece at Stoke By Nayland. A trio gig early in January featuring guitarist Michael's composition. This one is called 'Trippin'' (as in falling over, not drug references). It's essentially a rhythm changes blow. The drummer is Essex based Tom Jiggins. The video was done with several cameras and the edited properly so this is as good a set of videos as I have ever been part of. The camera actually points at me instead of my having to wait for passing glimpses!! Apologies for the shirt (you should have seen the Docs).3 points

Years ago I ordered a radio for the kitchen from amazon. Came home from work to a card from Yodel saying the item was left in the recycling bin. I looked, bin was totally empty. It being bin day an all. Emailed amazon, they sent a replacement that arrived the next day. Two days later the neighbour knocks on my door. ”hiya, sorry about the delay, I’ve been away with work, but I took this off a delivery driver just as he was putting it in the recycling bin. He said he’d leave a card explains where it is” So the neighbour and I had matching radios in our kitchen from then.3 points

Thanks for asking AK, as it happens I picked it up last night! It's a ESP/LTD PJ, found locally on Gumtree for the princely sum of £150, with one of those hard foam soft/hard cases. Well happy with it, stopped by to see @Marc S on my way home and he agreed I got a bit of a bargain too. Spent a little time with it last night, changed the Rounds that were on it for some TI flats, gave it a quick setup, which I plan to re-visit tomorrow evening and check everything has stayed where I'd like it. It's an Unlined, but somewhat strangely, it has side dots for every fret position. Got a sharpie on the 2,4,6,8 etc dots and now it makes a lot more sense!3 points

The sideline electric bass hobby has now exceeded the upright bass hobby. Easier to hang on the wall at least. Recently added an old Dallas Tuxedo to the gang. Sweet eh?2 points

They were ridiculous for the money new, and £150 is something else!!!2 points

Ach come on guys keep the politics to the political threads and lets just enjoy what festivals are all about. Getting together with friends and like minded half wits getting p****d (or stoned depending on your preferences) and watching some great bands. Hail, rain, snow or sun won't be what you remember in 25yrs time. You'll only remember the great time you had. Dave2 points

I am selling my folding Bassix Electric Double Bass. It was handmade by Alan Hatswell & apart from the usual wear & tear it is in good condition. There is the odd small chip out of the body & a small chip out of the black body outline which you have to actually look very carefully to find. It folds up to just a fraction bigger than a normal bass guitar case & I will include the soft case & stand in the sale. The weight of the bass in it’s case is 7.8kg. The Bassix has a very lush mellow sound & is very easy to travel with. I brought it to practise with while I was away touring round the world. The controls give the bass a wide range of tone qualities while keeping that authentic upright sound. This is really the nearest you are going to get to a real double bass & is perfect for pizz & arco. It also has a very pleasing aesthetic look. Any questions then please message me. Many Thanks Greg1 point

After being ripped off by builders, it is with huge regret, that I'm having to put this brand new Merlos Custom 5 up for sale. The normal retail price on this would be just north of £3000, but I got a little bit of a deal (not that much!!) so I can make this affordable. I might be up for a trade - 4 or 5 string - providing I can sell my Chapman Stick, which is also up for grabs. Looking for £1900 (never played) or trade to the value of £2200.1 point

How odd. I stumbled upon that video the other day. He's a monster player without a doubt, but I've never been fond of his tone. Sounds like Kermit on a trampoline.1 point

Was initially unsure about compressors. Educated myself, realised it would solve issues I had with my P-bass (even signal and more sustain wanted). Bought a Walrus Deep Six (blend control and internal voltage boost to 18v deciding factors). Plugged for 5 mins to test - issues immediately solved, but dynamics I need still present. More tweaking required, but instant pay-off.1 point

I couldn't agree more regarding the neck width of Bass VI instruments. I have a Squier Bass VI and the neck is narrow even by guitar standards (it's certainly narrower than all the guitars I own) and that's the main reason why it doesn't get very much use. I had a look at the Music Man Silhouette Bass (it's not a very exciting looking instrument IMO) and according to the specs the neck is 44.5mm at the nut - where did you get the 47mm figure from? Also it seems to be marketed as a Baritone Guitar rather than a Bass VI, even though at just under 30" the scale length is about right for E - E stringing. However with 2 humbuckers rather than 3 single coils it appears to be voiced more in the Baritone range and it probably won't sound much like a Fender/Squier Bass VI, or your Revelation Bass VI. And so is it worth getting a custom Bass VI made to your specifications? Well given that a new Music Man is going to set you back around £1,700, probably yes. Where about in the world are you? Here in the UK there are several custom builders who would be able to make something suitable for you. It is important to find a luthier that you get on with and who you can trust to make those decisions that you know little about, in order to get the right instrument for you. My normal advice when picking a luthier for a custom instrument is to find someone who is already making something very similar to what you want. However in this case I think you may have to be even more trusting of your chosen luthier than usual. There are a couple of things that you should be aware of. Firstly any commercial custom luthier who is any good will be busy and you are probably looking at a build time in excess of 12 months. Secondly with a 52 width at the nut you are most likely going to need custom pickups to accommodate the extra wide string spacing and a custom bridge as well. That will all add to the cost and build time. There is one other route you could consider. Here on Basschat we have several talented people building their own instruments and sometimes instruments for other people. I would check out the work of Andyjr1515 in the Build Diaries section. Finally I don't think that this section is the best place for your question. I'd have asked it in either General Discussion or Bass Guitars. If you want to get the thread moved, click on "Report" on your OP and ask a moderator to move it for you. HTH1 point

@LewisK1975 Congrats on the new edition to your stable and always nice to bag a bargain at the same time! You got a particular set of songs / genre for the fretless in mind?1 point

Cheers for popping in Lewis - it was great to see you, and your new bass However, I only just realised..... I didn't make you a cup of tea! What a heinous, un-BC-like crime I promise you can have one next time, and even a chocolate biscuit, as long as you don't tell anyone It's a great bass for the money Lewis. I was really impressed with the quality, feel and finish, and even more impressed with the sound I bet once the action / truss-rod have been adjusted and allowed to "settle" it will feel even better. Love the colour too, really nice, rich 3TSB and in great nick too As I said yesterday eve, the dots in every position on the edge of the neck would probably confuse me - but that's more to do with the fact I'm all too easily confused lol I'm sure you could get used to them, or just dab some felt pen or acrylic paint over the ones you want to black out..... Let us know how you're getting on with it matey. You were right when we were discussing how you alter your playing style when playing fretless I had a quick go on mine just after you left. Cheers, and enjoy your NFBD Lewis1 point

Anyway a gift is something someone took the time to look for and therefore shall never be (re)sold. Then he could discover what a bass really is. Ok, there are 2 problems here too : 1. He is a guitar player. 2. It's a Rick. I know the first is a curse, but the second could be worse.1 point

I would typically try having the mic on axis / fairly central for a speaker - and play with distances. 1 foot +/- would be a good starting point - bass cabs do sound a bit better with slightly more distance than guitar cabs. If WA87 is like the U87, may be worth experimenting with different mic pickup patterns. Cardiod + figure 8 can be useful for minimising unwanted room reflections / bleed (by reducing pickup from back/sides, respectively); but omni may actually sound more natural.1 point

Folks, get yer lazy derrières over to that sales thread, and start ordering. It's a wonderful little poster indeed, printed on good, thick and stiff paper. I'm now a very proud owner of two of them (one vertical and one horizontal), and I really wasn't kidding when I mentioned my Picasso and my Dali and compared this to those in a favourable way... Er... yes, I was kidding, but at least I wasn't lying. Now buy this thing.1 point

Lol, I know, sometimes slap bassists can be a bit like guitar "shredders" who just widdle up and down arpeggios at lightning speed, but having played lots of different fingerstyle stuff for years, getting good at slap I will be a more rounded bassist and musician, I don't need to try and impress anyone at all it's about the music. Besides, I love music from the grunge and funk-rock era and driving slap basslines from the likes of Flea really work. I want to play good slap basslines, posing with flashy slap solos is not of interest to me. Slap seems to require a level of control and dsicpline that some other techniques don't have too, so it can only be good for timing and timbre in general. My lifetime goal is to be able to play absolutely anything on the bass. I know I'll never really get there, none of us will, but decent slap eludes me right now, and this is an annoyance.1 point

I'd have to say a 5-String USA Musicman SUB, if you can find one. You'll even have a couple of hundred quid left over. One of these: When I played 5-stringers, I had one and it had probably the best Low B I've ever heard.1 point

5 strings and 35” you say? get yourself a Lakland Skyline. You can thank me later.1 point

I've only recently joined Basschat, but I've been a huge maruszczyk fan since I've ordered my first frog back in 2011. In 2014 I was longing for a fretless, so obviously I got another frog, this time I got a showroom-shot (this was what Adrian sent befor sending sofa-shots)1 point

Certainly didn't feel like I was being treated like an idiot! I can handle a bit of banter - round here if a mate doesn't call you the naughty c word you're not a mate! But hey, it's the internet, so if you want to feel put-out on my behalf there's not much I can do to stop you. There aren't too many companies that come on here and take the cr4p Ashdown does and I do respect them for that.1 point
