  1. One of the bands I've played with for a number of years only plays about that many gigs , advert seems reasonable for me , ideal for a busy person who gigs for fun and can't commit to a full on musical project

  4. For sale is my ACG J-Type 5-string, No. 0078. I bought it on here last year, and it's a beautiful thing - the only reason I'm parting company with it is I just use my other basses more, and this deserves to be played and enjoyed! All the original specs are still on Alan's website here - http://archive.acguitars.co.uk/portfolio/0078-j-type-5-string/ It's in really excellent condition. For the purposes of full disclosure, the only marks I can find are a couple of small scratches on the back near the control cavity cover, and two tiny marks on the fingerboard between the 2nd and 3rd fret, which you can't feel, and can barely see. These all pre-date my ownership. I replaced the original EQ01 filter preamp with an East Uni-Pre. The bass balances beautifully, and has great resonance and sustain, along with a huge tonal range from the pickups and preamp. UK shipping is included in the price, as is a Stagg lined hard case to ship it in if required. You're welcome to come and try before you buy - I'm just off the A3 near Woking in Surrey. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades. NOW SOLD.

  5. I dont know about that. There's a lot wrong with The Guardian, but at least it's not pushing a rabid swivel-eyed Brexit agenda and a return to Victorian no-welfare serfdom, as favoured by certain right wing tax-evading billionaire newspaper owners...

  6. I think you've pointed out and maybe made me realise I have a problem! Overwhelmed by GAS!! - The mini board did exist for a short while. But it's demise I blame on my local music shop offering Helix LT for interest free credit. Mini board has since been consigned to the To Do list and I haven't used it since. But so far, LT hasn't had a fair share of really being used yet either. Two projects never happened and really it's overkill for my function band.. hmmm... or maybe it isn't, I just need to spend more time with it ha ha!! My mind wanders and thinks, "well instead of a big board and a little board why don't I just settle on one medium sized board instead?" - Which could have been the B3n, Boss MS or of course now HXFX. Deciding between each as there's at least one pedal I will always keep at the start of my chain. Maybe this isn't a post for the effects forum, but I suspect that my inability to be happy with my gear is due to the short lived fix of new toys... I have zero problems with basses. My Go To bass is spot on. Pedals? oh dear me!

  7. Actually to be fair when I left school in the 70s I was able to get a job that paid enough for me to live independently. I think that would be next to impossible today and I'd probably end up dead in a ditch within a week. It's heartbreaking that young people now have to live with their parents for years on end because they cant afford to move out. It prevents them from becoming true adults, imho. I think that may be part of the problem.

  8. Just form a slight listen that last clip shows the mids/high end that I`m after. I`ll have a proper listen later on, but this really seems like it will be the all-in-one pedal that I`ve been waiting for. Drat, more expense

  10. For the DIYers among us, Julian Pohler (Mr. Shalltechnik04 - the guy behind the Guma Drive, Guma Antique and Growling Krizzly kits) is bringing out a combined HPF/LPF + DI kit soon called "Vong" (no idea what Vong means). I've asked him to keep me posted on when it's to be released.

  11. All fender body shapes. Boring, unimaginative and definitely unattractive! Add to that most single cuts but I like the Les Paul shape. Oh and the Warwick basses with the dildo top horn!

  14. I don't like natural finishes or sunbursts, slab body basses, body-binding, headless, single cuts, non-cloverleaf machine-heads, anything with more than five strings, things that look like coffee tables. Basically this :

  15. Thanks for the nice feedback! The monthly composition challenge typically receives a woeful number of votes in comparison to the usual threads about P-bass colours, string choices, cats and what have you... so we're grateful for every crumb of support we can muster. Cheers

  16. As a man of a certain age, I'll always have a soft spot for the 1980s SB range and also the Integra models that Billy Gould used on The Real Thing. I've got an old Japanese (1978) Primary P-bass; granted it's really just the body and neck that remain original (everything else was shot), but it's a very robust well made bass.

  18. This is my all original 1966 Fender Jazz bass. Purchased from the US a few years ago, I have decided to mover her on. She is all original and as far as I can tell down to the last screw. The finish is clean and bright and the bass has that big bold 66 funky tone. She has a slight buzz on the 15th fret on the G which I could sort out with a bit of fret work but never felt the need as I use her as a funk bass. She has a few nicks in the body but nothing major - I have posted pictures to show but she is very clean all over. This bass was an under the bed find and the case smells a little of that but It's not nasty and I don't want to put anything in the case that might affect the finish over time. I'm open to sensible offers and will ship overseas - bear in mind this has a rosewood fret board and does not have a CITIES certificate.

  19. Just saw this on the Lakland Facebook page, the bassist for Jason Aldean the country act who was shot at in Vegas last year got their kit back from the police and found a bullet lodged in his 55-94 😮 It must just bring it all back, how close the band were to being murdered along with so many others.

  20. Brilliant story Nacho! As you know, I've always felt strings were a very important part of an instrument. It's a learning curve

  22. The OP asks about protecting speakers "etc" so I do not think that excludes variable frequency high pass filters, which I agree only cut at 12dB/octave, but are much more versatile than a fixed frequency device cutting at 36dB/octave. In my case, my reflex cabs were designed using WinISD, and the ports are tuned in the low 50s, although I play a 5-string. According to WinISD, the speakers could be damaged by a strong 30Hz signal, but adding a 12dB/octave filter tuned to 40Hz removes that risk, so I use an FDeck clone for speaker protection, and where necessary, I increase the turnover frequency to get rid of boominess. In my experience, using a pair of Jack 10s, or a pair of reflex 10s, you can take out most of the bottom octave before the sound starts to get 'bass-lite'. David

  23. I think they use them as salad garnish liberally spread around a roasted swan, they then add the blood, sweat and tears of ex-servicemen as dressing. After dinner entertainment is usually scratching the Queen's head of a pound coin. Here's a belter from the Viz archives:

  24. Well I'm not part of that generation, however I don't see them as being less resilient. Just less willing to allow abusive behaviour directed at their friends and family slide without speaking out and doing something about it. If some old guys construe that as being overly emotional then I guess that speaks more about their generation than it does the "snowflake" generation.

  26. I play in a band that this might as well be an ad for. It's a great laugh, practices (about 3 a month) are fun and are basically a get together for a jam. We do about that many gigs, we hire venue, promote etc. We generally make a little profit, which usually goes to charity. It's not a function band, and we don't play classic covers stuff, but otherwise the same applies. We've all got other commitments (other bands, families, jobs etc.) so it suits us. For me, it beats going to the pub and watching a football match. I hate footy and drinking takes second place to playing for me. It gets me out of the house and keeps me off the streets I've done my time playing functions and pubs/clubs circuits. Honestly i haven't got the energy for all that these days. I'm sure I'm not alone...

  27. When I was in my old punk covers band we went from gigging at least every other week to one gig every 2 months due to one of the members of the bands other commitments. Drove us mad, especially as he also fitted into all 3 of the categories listed by the above as undesirable. Practising and gigging weekly was the only way of keeping him focused and on the ball. Whilst it might be ok for some, not for me.

  30. I saw a video on youtube where Annie (St Vincent) mentioned it I am sure. Something about being in the studio with Pino and he either played her guitar and he liked it and thought a bass would be good, or he tried a prototype and thought it was good......I cant remember and I am probably paraphrasing, but she mentioned bass and Pino and that's all that matters.

  31. Probably the Thumpinator then. However as has also been said check that there isn't a device in your signal path already doing this first. I'm not sure about the Broughton pedal, you'd need to try it, but for me looking at the spec 12dB/oct isn't steep enough to be as effective as the Thumpinator.

  40. I think everybody is missing the legal part. For copyright reasons it's simply illegal to photograph, film or record during a show... In the 80's, it was even printed on the tickets and reminded at the venue. The law is still the same, but people have become so egocentric and selfish that they don't care at all. You know, the next step could be drones blasting these cell phones (and maybe spitting on them first) and that would be great fun.

  41. I think it's more down to playing technique than anything else, not really something a pedal can do.

  42. When people say tried and tested Stingray do they mean the slab three-bolt, the contiured four-bolt, the contoured six-bolt 2eq, the contoured six-bolt 3eq or the slab six-bolt 2eq? The Stingray has been continually improved since it was released, not one of them has been a let down. These are smart refinements by a company who don’t usually get it wrong, why such groundless negativity when none of us have even played one yet? Silly.

  43. Aidanb: it’s loud for its size, I think that’s the point of these. It’s the only Barefaced cab I’ve tried though. I’m not in touch with what a typical covers band requires, I can’t advise on that, sorry.

  44. just throw my two penneth in, it's a very loud little cab on it's own, punchy and well defined, all depends on how loud the rest of your band are and the environment you play in of course. I had one with a compact and the two together were massive, I did however use the midget at quieter rehearsals on it's own and it was grand, a-b'd against a big baby I'm unsure, the big baby has more output and the tweeter as well, but the midget is a damn fine cab, one of barefaced best and if you find it's not enough on it's own another midget or a 1x10 would cure that, good luck

  45. Since I discovered flats I've never been tempted to return to rounds, (20+ yrs). I have Labella on my Mustangs and Hofner, both model-specific sets. To my ears they have a special warmth, and give the bass a voice of it's own, not just a guitar in a lower register. Add to that the smooth feel and don't forget the longevity. There are those of course that want the zing of rounds and that's OK. The trick with flats is discovering the right ones for you, gauge, tension, feel and tone, and for each particular instrument.

  46. If you can get it at that price it’s the bargain of the century. I have one I bought off a mate to mess about on and it’s great, better strings as mentioned would be worth investing but I paid £300 on mine and thought that was a really good price. Sadly I think anyone who orders one will get an email saying it’s a mistake shortly after, but if don’t try you don’t get.
