  1. Swearing at people in work isn't professional though, irrespective of what kind of environment you are working in. You certainly wouldn't get away with it in my workplace. Sounds like this person you choose to label a snowflake stood up to some typical alpha male bs macho behaviour, and you don't like it. Good.

  3. I like that they're making crossovers from various classic Fender models, but I wish they'd do it with a little more... taste? For example, I really dig the stuff RS Guitarworks is doing with some of the classic designs, like a Jazz Bass in '50s P-bass style. Just awesome! https://rs-guitarworks.myshopify.com/collections/basses/products/contour-bass-54

  4. those lyrics were written down by Knopfler, almost verbatim from a conversation he overheard, as such he is singing in character. Changing the 'offensive' lyric, not only detracts from the ire towards the person being sung about, but also changes the person being sung about (80's American hair metal type). IMO of course

  5. More or less just an excuse to say what a top bloke Paul Young seems to be and what a shame to lose his wife at such a young age. One of those guys who make me wish I could sing like him (if I could sing at all).

  9. New bass day: BB1025 They say you don't miss something until it's gone. Well that was very true in my case with a new 'end of line' BB425 I managed to get my hands on last year but then parted with, too soon, in a trade for another bass. I came close to getting a Vintage White ('VW') BB1025 from Rimmers earlier in the year, which was the finish that I'd wanted (the same as my former BB425, in fact), only to find that stuff that was supposed to have already sold out had, in fact, sold out! The trouble with seeing the black 1025 for trade in the FS section each time it got bumped, is that it reminded me I'd really like to get my hands on a VW BB1025! But not at the price the Yammy Store in London had listed theirs online for. @dannybuoy mentioned a little earlier in this thread that they would be willing to price match, so I thought I'd see what I could negotiate. I was in town today and met up with @CameronJ for a pedal swap (returning a loaned bitcrusher and buying a couple more Source Audio pedals off him!) and persuaded him to meet at the Yammy store. We A/B'd a new P34 on display with the VW BB1025. Why they only provide relatively under-powered Hartke amps to show off their wares, I have no idea! The P34 is indeed a lovely bass and had they had a P35 in stock I might have been half tempted, but they didn't and I managed to persuade them to undercut the Rimmers' price on the 1025 and to also include a really good quality Yammy gig bag (which seems to be a lot better than generic one included on the Rimmers' website). There was no way a P35 was going to be worth more than twice the price of a 1025 for me, which should make for an excellent gigging bass (and without being something I'll fret about the occasional ding along the way, which I probably would with a P35). There are just a few differences between the 1025 and the 425. The 1025 has a better body construction with a 3 piece body & spline joint; a better bridge; nickel rather than plastic nut which should improve the articulation on the open strings a touch and the P-pups are split blade rather than split single. That's pretty much it. The PUPs on the 425 are a P-bass on steroids; they deliver a very impressive punch for a passive bass and I found myself dialling-back the mids a touch with the 425. The 1025 pups are more balanced in that regard. So I think I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on very possibly the last new VW BB1025 for sale in the UK; I hope I've learned my lesson from letting my 425 go, too soon, and hold on to this one for a fair bit longer!

  11. Given that he's not done a lot with the guitar since it was dropped a couple of years ago I've decided to go with 9s. I spoke with my mate Feritt at Foulds in Derby. After we'd talked through the merits of 8s, 9s and 10s he sold me a set of machine heads for around £15 and some strings for £5. The machine heads are of a good standard he says because he's used them before. We reckoned it would be better to go with the light strings and make it as easy for the lad as possible. The set shown has a spare top e. Not a bad thing since the 0.009" is the most likely to break. Whenever we asked him about getting the guitar fixed he would go quiet about it. I have a feeling he got a severe telling off from his dad about it and has been reluctant to go near it since. Today is his fifteenth birthday so it's time we got it fixed for him so he can have a proper go and if it isn't for him, he's got a good guitar to sell and put the money towards some of his sports activities. The old tulip machine heads are packed up in the pack from the new heads and will do for spares. The lad's granddad Jack says he might have them for a uke build. The new ones pop in nice and snug after I clean out the holes with a 10mm auger bit. It turned out that the older heads had a slight taper down from 10mm and there was a bit of crap in there from paint prep at build. 9 to 42s with a spare 9 thrown in Replaced full set of machine heads Full restring Polished frets Cleaned fretboard with lemon oil Checked wiring (good) Tightened nuts at each pot as one was quite loose and the others finger tight only Cleaned, polished and buffed entire instrument It sounds great and that's just through my bass rig. A light refurbish for £20, not bad.

  13. But would you be offended if they didn't change the line? My band changes the homophobic lyric in Dire Straits' Money for Nothing. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a homophobic insult used in that context. However, if the op is referring to "I look all white but my dad was black" then unless I'm missing something in context or other lines I don't find this offensive, it's not saying being black/ white/ mixed race is good, bad or better one than another or giving an insult. Society still has a problem with race and mixed race and calling that out to think about is no bad thing... Unless I'm completely misunderstanding.

  14. Always had time for Steve Winwood, his music and his bands, and some years ago I met him by chance at a christening. So really, I should now tell you what a terrible twunt he was. However, he was charming, urbane, funny, showed a genuine interest in what I was doing musically and we chatted for some time. Sorry.

  15. Another useless bit of Ruts trivia but guitarist Paul Fox played drums for me a few times in a jam band I was in circa 2007, just before he died. He got up and did Babylon's Burning, flicking everything to full on a 40w Fender tube amp - it was the loudest most punk rock I ever saw.

  16. WELCOME TO THE YAMAHA BB MEGA-THREAD! POSSIBLY THE MOST POPULAR BC BASS THREAD EVER! History of the Yamaha BB Bass – Workhorses That Became Thoroughbreds - Bass Musician Magazine, The Face of Bass This thread originally started when the new Yamaha 3 series were announced in early 2017, this has turned into a bit of a 'hub' thread for discussions on all matters related to Yammy BB and there have been a LOT of really helpful contributions and discussions on these much loved basses (as well as plenty of banter and banality) along the way. Predecessor thread (2011-13): Yamaha BBs - Bass Guitars - Basschat Original Post (March 2017) Paid a visit to the Yamaha store in London on Monday to check out the BB1025 which came highly recommended by BCs (see thread "Best 5 string you've ever owned"). Lovely low action and really good solid build, but not too heavy (important consideration for two hour gigs!). The big news is that it was about to be replaced by a new, slightly thinner, BB1035 model** which are currently being shipped to the UK. As a result Yamaha were willing to knock 17.5% off the normal selling price of this much loved bass and include a gig bag, set up, 12 month service and free shipping (they even managed to locate possibly the final Yamaha store copy of the Tobacco Brown Sunburst finish I'd got my eye on, in Germany!). It was hard to refuse such a good sales pitch! So if any of you are after a BB1025, now is as good a time as any to pick up one at a very good price! (And I see that Gear4Music have discounted a BB1025 Black to just £599, over £200 off their normal selling price!). **Postscript: as we all now know they never did release a BB1035 (!)

  17. This is the newer rear ported model in a very pretty tweed finish. Pure Swedish quality and attention to detail. Frankly it’s the loveliest and potentially the last cab I’ll ever own. This has lived in the comfort of my home for the full duration of my ownership - I bought it from BassGear a couple of years ago but haven’t had the opportunity or need to gig it. A serious shame as it’s a real one cab solution and deserves to be used as nature intended! Inside is a 12” woofer with a 6” mid driver - no tweet but that mid driver goes up to 9.2k. You get sweet highs, great dispersion and clarity in the mids with none of the harshness associated with tweeters. Labelled as handling 450 watts @ 8ohms but will happily drink more watts than that, especially if you’re running fairly clean sounds. In short, it’s likely that your head will run out of steam long before this cab starts to sweat. Includes the very nice padded TKS cover which fits like a glove. Collection or meet up in/around London as I just won’t risk putting this in the hands of couriers. Info from TKS: Small and light, but with impressive lows and a clear mid range, the 1126 offers a tone few other cabinets do, and many bass players using the 1126 have finally found "their" tone. The great dispersion from the 6" speaker doesn't require tilting the cabinet to get clear mids up at ear level, and also spreads mid range clarity evenly across a stage, making more of the bass tone reach the audience and fellow musicians. Even though the 1126 has more mid range than most tweeterless cabinets, it can easily be altered through EQ to give a more "vintage" tone. Specifications: Impedance: 8 Ω Power handling (high average power test signal): 450 W RMS Recommended amplifier power: 250-600W RMS @ 8 Ω Sensitivity[average]: 94 dB SPL @ 1 W/1 m Sensitivity[100Hz]: 94 dB SPL @ 1 W/1 m Sensitivity[max]: 97 dB SPL @ 1,5 kHz, 1 W/1 m Frequency response (-10db): 33 Hz - 9,2 kHz Displacement: 496 cm³ Measurements (WxHxD): 52x45x44 cm Weight: 15 kg

  18. Sold my double bass a while back, been playing electric for about 35 years, just recently sold my fender jazz, thought I would never play double again due to wear and tear over the years, had a frozen shoulder, flipped my left arm up over playing the double, had 18 months of sports massage therapy to try to get back to playing, hasn’t worked, recently had to go see a physio over right arm n shoulder pain, it’s proper knotted up, said that the issues I have had in the past haven’t been resolved and it’s all the years of playing, good thing is that the physio thinks I can get in good enough condition if I follow advice, been going two weeks and can feel the difference, it’s painful but getting better. Im saying this as a warning to any one who might be aware that they aren’t in the best condition or are having pains, get checked out by a physio, and I don’t mean the NHS, it’s a waste of time, I ignored for a long time symptoms that should have been a warning to me and it stopped me playing to the point were I thought I would never play again and I sold most of my gear, I won’t play electric again as I can’t stand the weight round my shoulder but am hoping to get fit enough to have a go at double again, prevention is the best thing, get those muscles that we need to play in the right condition or you may end up where I was, regards , Jez

  20. Run a bath, then put the bass in it. Measure the volume of water displaced ( make before and after marks on the side of the bath) and calculate the weight of the bass according to Archimedes. Then take the next five days to dry out the electronics and check the neck for any warps. This will save you the £5. May need refinishing.

  22. Yes, definitely loving this. Spoke to Richard Ruse about a pedal like this after I got my Trickfish rig. Sadly Richard passed away recently but hopefully Trickfish will continue to grow and do the guy proud. Will probably cave and get one when they're available, especially with all those routing options!

  23. I think you've totally misundertood my post due to a typo! I'll fix... 95% of my playing at home is through a PJB Bighead. But most of the time I am playing along to an mp3, backing track or drum loop etc. I practice solo as well of course, but being able to play against something is so important that any headphone amp without an aux in is officially useless since you'll just have to buy an extra headphone amp anyway!
    1 point
  24. That's not entirely fair. Even most band playing bassists have occasional need for 'stealth mode' if they're working on stuff at home rather than in a studio, when the kids are in bed, or neighbours are not being appreciative! A headphone amp with aux in is just the ticket. The headphone out and aux in one on my B3n has meant it's stayed on my board when I've been downsizing a bunch of other pedals (and it may yet make a return, if it doesn't get snapped up and I give up trying to fit everything on a PT Nano+ ); and for some folk e.g. @dave_bass5 - I think that is exactly what he uses for home bass playing.

  37. How long until they re-issue the '55 P - single coil pickup, contourd ash body, 2TS finish? That's the perfect design. As far as I'm concerned, there was no need to re-invent the Precision Bass in 1957.

  41. Just wanted to say I’m very, very happy with the PL. I’m so glad I found that before getting any of the much more costly boxes. It worked so well with the BDDI that I had it on almost all night. I’m fact I turned the BDDI off a few times, which I have never done before. Rehearsal was the first time I plugged it in, so I’ve not really messed with it much. I will do the mod at some point but over the weekend I’ll be able to have a proper play and mess with the trim pots inside. i should also mention that I was using my Vanderklay cab and Sire V7 tonight for the first time in months, and the bass really made a difference as well. Going to bed happy knowing that my quest is over......for now. I am thinking of getting a smaller cab for rehearsals though, maybe a BF 1x10. Our new studio is on the first floor.

  42. I've had a G30 for a few years...it works fine but the above elements are a bit hokey. The belt clip is frankly awful and I live in fear the battery door will just spring open (but it never has). About ten days ago I bought a Levys MM4 pouch. Have a quick look on You Tube and you'll find videos. I favour Levys long polypropylene straps...the narrow ones; the pouch wraps around the strap beautifully (via Velcro flaps) and the pouch itself is elasticated so the transmitter (less the belt clip) goes in nice and snug. Fantastic bit of kit.

  46. I have an AER Three. They have the most astonishing bottom ends of any compact amp bar none. I mainly run with Demeter into Bergs 2x12's and 4x10 but I have to say that the AER is my go to compact. It is the one I will take to any small venue. Bass or Eub in one hand Amp Three in the other. fits in the boot of a small car on the front seat. The pre amp and controls take some mastering but once you find 'your sound' it will be as good a sound as anything out there. Less crisp than the small marks, but the bass reproduction is out of this world. If you are using a P / EUB or micing a DB they are incredibly good. They require a bit of work to master control wise and many people don't get there. The Compressor is also really useful. I actually had 2 at one point and ran them a as a stereo pair but I just couldn't use the power. One is definitely loud enough. Every conceivable back panel out and feature - and of course stupidly high quality components and build. Those two 8" drivers kick like a mule but there is not as much brightness as an aggie, berg or mark small cab. You can wind plenty of treble in and its a sealed cab so it does respond well. It just doesn't have a horn for that very top pip.
