I dread to think how many marketing emails from ScottsBassLessons you’ve missed out on in the last 15 years 👀9 points

Rarely available 2021 UK limited edition from Fender Japan. As it's a Ltd Ed it is relatively rare and has features not often found on other Fenders. Think Duff. Bargain price IMO. Sherwood Green Metallic 8lb 10 oz. Unusual 12 inch radius Rosewood fretboard, satin maple neck, microtilt. TBX pot has been removed & standard tone pot now fitted. Much better imo. Apologies for photos, I'm old and not tech. 1 tiny lacquer crack next to neck, 1 tiny dimple on top chamfer, both circled in yellow on photos. Anything else is reflections. Thinnest worst Fender "gigbag" ever. Collection from Darlington, however I may meet up within about 50 miles if buyer has good feedback. COURIER! UK ONLY, buyer to organise & pay for it. Other feedback also available. Thanks for looking,8 points

1981 4001 BT with personal modifications. Its taken a while to get all the mods I wanted done and I still want to install a parallel/series switch (probably on a push/pull pot). But that can wait a while I think, I just want to enjoy it for now.5 points

I've decided to put this Jazz up for sale. It's a great bass but I've decided to look for a real late '70s Jazz. It's a 2017 Fender Japan '70s traditional Jazz Bass in California blue finish. It's an authentic recreation of a late '70s Jazz. The body is ash and the neck is one piece maple with a skunk stripe. It sports full size Japanese Gotoh tuners and the normal Fender bridge. A lot of these Japanese '70s Jazz recreations use '60s spacing for the bridge pickup, but this has the correct '70s spacing and 7.25" vintage radius. This model is not available anymore - the current iteration has a basswood body, smaller tuners and a 9.5" radius A previous owner has customized it somewhat; the white pickup covers and knobs are not original - it would originally have had black ones. I do not have those unfortunately. The body is light swamp ash - the bass weighs 4.2kg/9lbs 4oz. It comes in a fairly lightweight gig bag. The neck is in ideal condition with no marks/dents at all - like new. The body has some dents in it but the paint is all intact. Truss rod works fine, it's currently set up with a very low action with 45-105 Elites Stadiums. I'm in Bristol and you're very welcome to try it out through my amps. Collection preferred - I do not want to post it given the fairly basic gig bag. Happy to drive a reasonable difference for the right buyer however. The only trades I would be interested in would be either a genuine USA '76-82 Jazz, or a 2 band StingRay, with money added from me your way obviously.4 points

I was perusing the Join My Band ads for my area when I came across this gem: https://www.joinmyband.co.uk/classifieds/performers-needed-t1547705.html Reading between the lines (and perusing this person’s other posts), this is a singer and instrumentalist who has written and recorded a set of material and now wants people to perform it to their exact requirements, even down to using the person’s own equipment. Prospective performers are invited to be interviewed (not auditioned) and advised that the choreography may be a challenge, and that they will sign up as employees of a limited company, of which Companies House hold no record. The whole thing is a massive red flag! I’ll let you know how my interview goes…4 points

On the hardware front, Barefaced has now been overtaken by LFSys as BC's favourite speaker maker following collaboration between @stevie, @Phil Starr, and @Chienmortbb on a DIY 112 which evolved into the LYSys series of cabs. Ninety zillion multieffects pedals varying between a single pedal size (even mini-pedal size) and aircraft carrier deck size have been released. Everybody loves at least one of them, and everybody has found something to moan about with at least one of them. Basses are still being made with scratchplates, unfortunately. Some things never change. The big tonewood debate still erupts occasionally. It's not entirely certain whether the fence that some are sitting on is made of tonewood.4 points

Realising that getting in the car and driving home as quickly as possible is the most important part of any gig, my minimalist fits in a pocket pedalboard got the nod last night4 points

Do I have a signature sound? I do believe I do. It is the sound of a tepid pie being being flung against a sheet of plexiglass. Whether it's a passive P strung with flats, or the active Jazz with rounds, Bass VI, Aerodyne, Rick, Hofner violin or a semi-hollow bass, it is always the same soul crushing ill-defined thrum. Doesn't matter if it's through the big Trace rig, small TC combo, a borrowed amp, direct to the desk or through a myriad of effects it is always this way: it truly must be, as they say, all in the fingers. Apart from when I play with a pick - when it is, inexplicably, much the same. I hope this does not appear boastful to those still searching for their signature sound as it has taken many years of changes big and small to arrive at this lofty plateau. Weirdly, in the mix it always sounds ok. I am utterly convinced I hear with different ears when I'm playing versus when I'm listening back.4 points

The Masterbuilt Metroline series is a conundrum for me. It's Warwicks master builders, and they are some of the best in the world so I get the price point. But when the price of the Warwick shop exceeds the price of Rogers NY shop, but you get a "Metroline" stamp on it, as if to say "Well it's not a real NY Sadowsky", it just feels weird. It's almost a disservice having the Sadowsky name attached for all parties involved.4 points

Reclusiarch Aurelius on SoundCloud seems to be based in Krasnodar in Russia though, not Gloucestershire! No, I am not interested in joining this band, I was scrolling through JMB looking for dep opportunities (I am such a tart). Consequently it doesn’t matter directly to me, but there is a BC tradition of highlighting (for entertainment purposes) delusional or wildly unrealistic band ads. It will matter to someone though, when they sign up to goodness-knows-what in the hope of a shortcut to fame and fortune. I do hope the site rules allow us to discuss things that don’t even matter, otherwise pages of discussion on fret position markers would have to be deleted.4 points

I have sacrificed myself for the sake of finding out about the M-Vave Blackbox. I don't think I can get away with claiming it as a Tier 2 as it can be used for both bass and guitar, and I'll be using it for bass (and possibly guitar too).4 points

The following words/phrases will cause me to leave all threads: "wearing" strings Bitsa Unnecessary shortening of names - Yammy, Wick, etc "Leaning Towards" basschat Collective/hive mind Snagged Pulled the trigger "won" on Ebay "she" when referring to their bass Alternatively I can use these as part of Basschat bingo and include: if only it was a 4 / 5 / 6 string What's the weight? is it any good for metal? I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than have a tort scratchplate. it's the musical equivalent of having the most beautiful woman in the world wear big frilly bloomers. It can turn the most amazing bass into something that I'd be embarrassed to be seen with in public. It's like putting mayonnaise on a fruit scone. You get the idea 😅 Are these bonkers enough? Yet here I still am nearly 19 years later 🤔😂4 points

Just got my amp back from a bloke who's had it for about a year, old Line 6 Spider IV 75 combo (incidentally @jonno1981 sold me this when he was in the business); that said, I'm not really a huge fan of this amp, only really used it for home recording. The pickups are really quite decent, suprisingly so; I'm actually wondering whether it's worth dropping in a new pair of P94s to be honest, although I do prefer the visual aesthetic. It's completely silent from a grounding perspective. Nice!3 points

The search for a case is complete . Found this today . It's a case for top kit fishing poles. Semi rigid with internal velcro straps and external carrying handle . Fits like a glove and also holds the bow , which is in a snooker cue case , sitting on top of the box with the output jack . £55 list price , mine for £9.97 . Happy chap3 points

Even worse, 11 people have got worked up enough to reply. Some of them multiple times. 👀3 points

They've missed a trick. Speaker output is still jack only, like all the micro amp heads, rather than a speakon/jack combo socket.3 points

Mini board for some upcoming shows, there’s not really a need for any effects or extra drives so decided to slim it right down from the RB Tres 3.0 to a 2.1. I do miss having the patch bay but it’s far less complicated should I hit any issues. Still can’t help eying up the new QC Mini 👀👀👀3 points

Wow. I didn't know that. It's a bit like custom shop Squier being more expensive than Fender. Sort of. Either way, now you've explained it I get it even less. I could go to Woodstock and place my Spector order in person for that money.3 points

My previous teacher would not teach pop songs as she said "they are hard to play because they're so badly written" - she was a graduate of the Royal College of Music though, and friends with Alfred Brendel, so that's perhaps understandable. In contrast my current teacher is a professional jazz pianist and he's opened up so much to me - working out what you need to play in a piece, without playing all the notes. Chord substitutions, and missing out the less important notes in a chord etc. Improvising a left hand part and changing that depending on whether there is a bass player. All very useful for playing in a band, but perhaps not recommended for ABRSM exams!3 points

Hadrien Féraud who simply replaced Anthony Jackson with Hiromi is a hell of a player, even if, sometimes, he plays too much And as mentioned by Anti, Kinga Głyk is certainly the most promising bassist around (she is Polish, by the way). Charles Berthoud is the best YouTuber around for sure, but even if I admire his playing, his records are really meh, I mean he's a talented player and arranger, but on the poor side when it comes to composition. Concerning the basses, Harley Benton is proposing excellent stuff at super low prices. Amp wise, we entered the fully digital era ultra lightweight items. Everything software based (modelling or sampling) is simply amazing these days. And, sadly a lot of companies have gone away in 15 years and, now, you can't afford a Wal anymore...3 points

I know this isn't probably news to anyone, but for people in a similar position to me (i.e. can read music and play to roughly grade 3 but pretty much self taught) I'd highly recommend getting some lessons with a decent tutor. I've learnt more in the last 2x 30min lessons than in the last 5 years! It isn't so much just playing the grade pieces, it's stuff like: How to sit, wrist position, finger positions (not using my thumb on black keys!), how to use the sustain pedal properly (and how to properly use the middle pedal), proper scale technique, how to spot scale structures and what other scales work with them, some useful rhythm stuff (tapping out the notes for each hand on each leg), and some reading things - I'd been misreading ties as slurs. etc. I guess all that stuff could possibly be found in online videos and books, but having it tailored to you is so much more efficient and effective. I do think that once a week might not be necessary for me after a couple of months of ironing out bad technique, once a fortnight might be sufficient (and obviously saves 50% of the not insignificant cost). (I'm actually finding perfecting the grade pieces a bit tedious - playing The Muppet Theme for the 100th time it starts gets a bit annoying!)3 points

Women: kingaglyk.com Alissia Benveniste Mohini Dei Men: Tom Kennedy Richard Bona charlesberthoud.com I don't think you lost a thing. These are flashy players but I still think most of the bass work is done in half or first position and with roots and fifths. Good timing is still the key.3 points

Always LaBella 760FS-S for me. They're 045-105 stainless-steel flats. Not what I'd call bright but bright enough for me through my LFSys Monaco FRFR cab. Never had to change a set but then again I tend to change basses instead of strings 🙂3 points

My tutor always says that one of her own tutors (a Russian pianist) was saying that you had to play a (part of a) piece 200 times to start mastering it... He was totally right and she (my tutor) is too (I've learnt more in 2 months with her than over the past years). I'm still learning Ryūichi Sakamoto's Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (the official Opus piano score, so his last arrangement) and I can tell you it's the plain truth. Furthermore, this piece should be played at contests, because of its inherent composition quality (and complexity) with references to Debussy (his "master"), Bach or Beethoven as well as Japanese ethnic music (another graduating). He was an extraordinary composer and graduated for this from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, but a lot of people seem to snob him, because of his electronic music background (also graduated for this). To those, I would say to analyse and play his first hit with the Yellow Magic Orchestra : Tong Poo.2 points

It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like a modern SB1000 painted black rather than a period-correct reissue. The near-parallel string spacing was one of the features that made the originals so special.2 points
