I'm downsizing my collection a bit, so up for grabs is my incredible Über Spec Finn 5 string by AC Guitars. This is the highest spec that ACG offer, with the most premium woods, the multicoil pickups and the full fat DFM filter preamp, with a passive tone knob. As with all my basses, this is 31.5" scale, which makes playing absolutely effortless, and due to the sound design and construction, there are literally nothing but benefits to the shorter scale. Here's the details... Spec Level: Über 31.5" scale Bolt-on construction 24 frets 18mm string spacing 45mm nut width Katalox Top Cuban Mahogany Body Black Accent Veneer 5 piece Red Oak/Wenge Neck, with slim asymmetric carve Highly figured Pau Ferro Fingerboard with Sapwood, wit 0º radius, i.e. flat ACG MC pickups, Multicoils, handmade by Aaron Armstrong ACG DFM filter preamp with passive tone control and active/passive switching ACG/Hipshot Custom Bridge Gotoh Resolute Tuners Currently strung with fairly heavy Nickel D'Addario XLs, but it really shines with lighter gauge Newtone Nickels, something like 40 60 80 125TW, I might have a set kicking around to pop on. I don't know the exact weight, as I don't have proper means to measure it properly, but I'd say it's a medium weight bass, maybe 8.5 lbs or thereabouts? Certainly doesn't feel heavy. This really is an incredible instrument, but I'm ultimately more of a 6 string bassist first, then 4 strings, then 5 - I know, weird. A bass built to this spec today would cost the best part of £4000, and worth every single penny. This Finn is absolutely mint, not a mark on it, never been gigged, barely even left the house. Looking for roughly £2000, ono, with a TGI Extreme Gigbag. More than happy to courier within the UK, with insurance, at buyer's cost, I'd guess this would be about £30 based on previous experience. No trades thank you, sale only. Cheers, Eude More pics...9 points

Howdy. Not quitting bass, but have just announced to the band that the next gig in September will be my last with them. There’s a lot more behind me knocking it on the head than just being fed up… I just don’t think, after 2 years that I want to be in a band with them anymore. We’ve been recording an album and It’s taken an age and the bickering and differences of opinion are taking their toll. I choose to do this, I’m not earning from it and it’s starting to feel like I should choose to not do it anymore…anyhow. The gear I own is solely down to “need” for the band. So I’m not overly attached to much of it. I’m going to set up sales threads for each part, probably 20 pedals and about 10 basses. I’m starting a project with a fellow basschatter and will just share music online - no plans to gig after September. Doing that “falling out of love with music” thing I seem to do every 4/5 years. Keep your eyes peeled x8 points

A couple of changes to my home/desk practice setup: Dedicated tuner allows me 5x separate effects readily available on the HX Stomp. The Element then acts as my Bluetooth/Headphone interface for practicing and learning tunes, as well as a DI/Cab sim for FOH if I gigged it. Can’t reach the amp out from the Element in this layout (because it’s located in a silly place), but I can just take the amp out from the HX Stomp anyway, so I’m sorted. Picked this up from Bass Bros end of last week, I did trade in the G&L Trib M-2000 and a few pedals towards it, but will be paying my dear old Dad back the rest. 1992 4001V63, in great condition for its age, I was a bit concerned about the small amount of tail lift but it doesn't cause any issues playing wise. Wanted a Rick for a long long time they have such a distinctive sound and look so cool! This one plays lovely, the neck is nice and slim. Only pic I have so far:6 points

It's been a big week or so for pedals here. Damnation Audio's Big to be more precise. Made in conjunction with Pet Symmetry, it's modelled after the Sanford & Sonny Bluebeard (a brilliant fuzz) and a boost pedal. Like everything of Damnation Audio's I've tried (MBD2, MBD3, Dirtfixer, Spite Box) it works rather well and actually makes me excited to play with a pick. Big-foot-esque blurry photo below.5 points

After a year of gigging it, I still hadn't fallen for the vintera II '50s p bass I'd gotten, so I traded it in and got this Player II - Absolutely delighted with it, ergonomically the neck just works better for me, and the pickups are superb. Put the obligatory leopard print strap on it and the rest of this year has been going great. Might even sell on something else and pick up another one in green 💚4 points

Much loved sandberg California tm5. Original Sandberg soft case included. Plays perfectly, set up with sandberg round wounds including a tapered B string. I believe they are the 45 gauge set, just the right amount of tension in the B. Finish is not pristine, but this is the aged model so it’s not supposed to be really. There is a nice patina on the metalwork and some tasteful markings on the body. There’s certainly nothing that’s not in keeping with that character. There is dink in the neck and headstock that I don’t think came from the workshop however, and the pocket zip on the case doesn’t work anymore These are really great instruments and I would consider swapping for a vm4. I just don’t want to deal with 5 strings anymore. Price is £1200, looking for a quick sale IMG_0112.mov4 points

D!ckheads, idiots, narcissists, tw*ts, I've played with them all, and it can become very tiresome, but I've been gigging solidly via word of mouth for the last 20 years. You can't do that sitting at home, so I've learnt to live with the 10% of people I don't like in order to do the things I do like with the other 90%.4 points

***PRICE DROP NOW £1300*** 2010 US Stingray, 2EQ, CAR with rosewood board. One of the limited edition 133 basses, full fat ‘ray but with a soft gig bag case instead of a hard shell job. This is in excellent condition with one very minor ding on the top edge, and the pickguard is quite marked but obviously easily replaceable. Comes with a Hipshot D-tuner (long key though instead of short… doh), if you want the original tuner key I’ll chuck it in. I’ve also replaced the pickup with a Nordstrand MM4.2, which sounds flippin’ great. She’s quite heavy (10lb) but with a decent wide strap it feels ok. ***EDIT*** now comes with the option of a Warwick Rockbass semi-rigid case - photos added. Loathe to post this but can at buyer’s (insured) expense, or can meet in person at either Portsmouth, Southsea, Southampton or Lymington (I’m on the I.O.W.)3 points

Whoops I did it again! Another attempt at persuading myself that I needed and could play a 5 string! Another 4 string incoming means that this must be sacrificed. Played a few times at home and 2 or 3 rehearsals, where my lack of 5 string ability was somewhat embarrassing! It really is as new (I bought it from Peach about a year ago) , there's not a mark on it and comes complete with the gig bag and tools. Nice and lightweight and all working as it should. Strung recently with a set of light gauge Newtones Specs are here Prefer collection but happy to travel within an hour for a meetup - Essex, Suffolk, London, Herts etc. Would reluctantly post at your expense and insurance.3 points

Sledgehammer is about the only one I regularly play in my band that has a prominent fretless bass line. But it sounds fine on fretted - no complaints so far! PS, I used to love playing "Wherever I lay my hat..." and "Tears in Heaven" at home when the mood took me. Beautiful lines.3 points

I got this MIJ Fender Jazz brand new in 1992, when I was 17. I played it exclusively for 3-4 years, and after that at least 50% of the time. After a few years I mostly played 8-string bass in a metal band, and it got used less and less. I pick it up sporadically these days, it's a good bass but I can't seem to get the sound I want out of it anymore. I've been thinking of selling it and getting another fretless.3 points

I put up with it for a long time in the 80's. Then one day, on the counter of a music shop in Leeds city centre, there was a sweet jar with hand written label "strap locks". It was full of these curious looking things. Have been using the same pair ever since. I recently took them apart and cleaned them for the first time as they were getting stiff. They must be 40 years old. How wonderful.3 points

After picking up the excellent MB102Energy cab from a fellow basschatter my LM4 arrived from Thomann ( considerably lower in price to U.K. stores ) Sat it on top of cab and played my PBass through it 1: Wow this is a loud amp considering I’m going into a single 8ohm cab 2: Quiet ( I’ve read noisy fan complaints but this 2025 model is very quiet. 3: EQ is excellent and the 4 band works very well. 4: Mute Function 5: Selector for flat or scooped EQ works well, footswitchable too 6: Old School control rolls off the top end and makes it sound more like an old Ashdown amp warm and slightly woolly ! 7: Light ( preferred the LM4 as it’s a metal case, 58R is plastic ) 8: Sound is very good, clear punchy and makes a good match with a PBass Very pleased with this rig and not out of place at home or jam sessions, rehearsals and gigs I used a rubber mat under the amp ( light heads I normally do ) and stops feet indentation marks in the fur covering !3 points

Thinking of selling my custom built bass. Body is basswood from a Westfield, with the neck pocket re-routed to correct the scale length for a jazz neck. The neck is from. Harley Benton jazz bass, maple and rosewood. The plates are tort, hand made by myself. Pickups are the EMG Tom Araya set with an added TKO killswitch. I will also include a Ritter thunderbird gig bag. Open to offers! It's by no means factory finish but it plays and sounds great, it's just on the heavy side!2 points

This is really rather lovely but we just haven't clicked. It's a Warwick Corvette Taranis 5 string in Burgundy Red. The swamp ash body has a sand blasted finish exposing the grain which may or may not be to your liking! The neck is laminated from some beautiful ovangkol. It's very manageable 8.8ilbs/3.99kg. Usual Warwick build quality all round. Large pole piece MEC pickups, jazz at the neck and MM at the bridge. the bridge pickup has a series/single(neck coil)/parallel switch so combined with a pick up pan control and two band eq you get a lovely range of sounds. The Volume control has a push pull active/passive switch. A few scars on the body and one small ding on the back of the neck by the octave on the low side. There's a reasonable gig bag with it. I can't post so a meet or collect is best. I travel about a fair bit with my work so we may be able to sort out something.2 points

Great example of a great bass. I haven't owned a P bass since my first Hondo II P copy so bought this a year or so ago second hand to scratch that itch. Had it set up by a local luthier who changed the nut to a bone one and strung it with a set of light gauge Thomastik Infeld Strings I bought from one of the members here. I'm more of an active bass man and do have a lovely Jazz when I want to go old school, Also there's a new 4 string incoming so this is better off with someone who will use it. The price includes the flats, but happy to negotiate if someone wants the original rounds back on. Everything is working, it's nice and light and in very good condition. There are a couple of tiny marks on the back of the body and one on the front just above the top of the scratch plate. Prefer collection but happy to travel within an hour for a meetup - Essex, Suffolk, London, Herts etc. Would reluctantly post at your expense and insurance.2 points

More rain. After I'd cleaned all the glue and torn fragments of wood out of the neck pocket (not a process I took any pictures of), the first order of business was to reattach the various pieces that meet at the neck block (by that I mean the solid piece of timber inside the body that the neck is glued to, not sure if it has a proper name). The top was still securely attached to this block, as was the right-hand side piece. The back was completely detached from it (along with having parted from the top 15–20-cm of the sides) and the left side piece was detached as well. I think these splits had their origins in one of the historic neck-smashy incidents. Like, they were violently snapped off the block then, and either no glued back into position or not glued back well. The steam might have separated an earlier repair, but I don't think those repairs were more than surface-level. I used a long thin scraper to clean the surfaces inside these splits and then lashings of titebond (injected deep into the joints with a syringe). I considered hide glue, but I was doing this indoors during the winter, and really didn't want my house smelling of boiled hoof. I know titebond's not traditional for proper luthierie, but I figured there should be some leeway if you're working on a plywood bass that looks like it was dragged behind a car. Here's a picture of the clamping arrangment for glueing up the side piece. It also shows the cleaned up inside of the neck pocket, with no more manky glue. I held off on glueing the veneers and patches into the pocket until after I'd closed everything up and got it secure. This second picture was taken while glueing up the back. You can never have too many clamps. I have at least twice as many now, but there's always room for more. I also noticed while moving it around that about a 30-cm-long section of the top had come away from the sides at the bottom of the bass. I again used scrapers to clean this out before injecting glue into the gap and clamping. Some of the more knowledgeable readers might be wondering how I kept the sound-post in place through all of this. The answer is that I honestly don't know. I forgot that it wasn't glued into position. Kindly it obliged by not falling out despite all the bashing and squeezing and shifting around. I didn't remember it was there until I was stringing the bass up weeks later.2 points

I am proud of this one. The complete Anthony Jackson performance on the tune '11:49 p.m.' from the 2012 Hiromi Trio Project album, 'Move'. One to read before you try to play! it has a long section in 5:8 that is not something you see very often, certain not for prolonged sections of improvisation, so it will test you, especially as the note groupings AJ uses are not consistent. There is also a unison section (also in 5:8) that will break a few bones! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/11-49-p-m-hiromi-uehara-trio-project/2 points

I used to roadie for a band called Buffalo in the 80's. The bass player had a Trace Elliot 8x10 combo. It was ridiculously heavy and awkward to move. Two of us once had to carry it up an external fire escape to the second floor to access the room they were playing. No one used to think about the weight of amps when designing them back in the day.2 points

Back to the forum after a long while, I give you my current minimalist pedalboard after refurbishing the board itself with new Velcro and stuff, and putting the ever-faulty Polish Love and Polish Hate aside. Very doomy, but can also go quite funky, but that envelope filter will be replaced because it annoys me.2 points
