  1. Hey all, looking to move on my GR Cube 800 1x12 combo. Basically as new condition. Has done two gigs and other than that mainly has been used as a home practice amp. It sounds ace and weighs 9.5kg!! Even still has all the plastic covering the shiny bits. Comes with the manufacturers branded fitted cover. current cost is about £1400 including then cover. So £950 seems a bit of a bargain!

  2. Thank you. Well by the time it got to me for 49 quid some joker had knocked the scroll/pegbox off so I couldn't say how awful it was prior to me replacing the neck ... but I think it would have been pretty dreadful. If you factor in the lack of 'coupling' of a neck joint not fully pushed home when glued (are you listening to me Gibson) then I think it probably sounded as bad as it played! Really the whole idea here was to take an entirely written off bass ... and make it giggable. When I strung it up the other week ... I could have put my Rockabilly Pro preamp and pickups on and gigged it ... it would have looked horrible ... and the neck was like a cricket bat (wide end) but I could have done it. So yes ... the net double bassage of the world has gone up by one 😁 I'm ridiculously sentimental about musical instruments - especially as I spend much of my working life making old pickups live again - and I wasn't about to see this old girl turned into a 'sign' as the owner suggested or a wall cupboard. It needed to make music again - and it will.

  4. Just put another P together with a roasted Jazz neck . Same woods as my others but for for some reason this resonates and punches fantastically well👌 Fenders "artic white" body... Yet it's like a cream colour 🤷.

  5. Shit journey to Sheffield - 2 hours on the M25 and then 4 on the M1. Great gig though, lovely crowd again, probably the best we’ve played on this tour. The drummer and I were very much enjoying our groove on many of the tunes. As always we are getting well into the groove as a band and the tour is nearly over! Shoes were Soul Cal & Co Converse lo top rip offs. Cheap and comfy and not too hot in this heat 🤓

  6. Since my last band split almost a decade ago I completely fell out of love with all things bass. I have hardly picked up a bass in that time. I’ve been getting that itch again and was hunting for a Geddy Lee Jazz as I’ve had 2 in the past and love them. BassBros had one to win in one of their competitions. I bought a ticket the day before the competition ends, and it was my first time buying a ticket. I only bloody won! Beyond chuffed! Won on Sunday and today this was waiting for me at home. 😍

  7. Pete, Take a close look at the Summerfest 1970 line up. Much more diverse than what we have now. And just think we're an hour north of Chicago the blues capital of the world and no more blues headliners at Summerfest. Daryl

  9. I remember sweating like a pig at a rehearsal studio. There was a death metal band in a nearby room, and they finished about the same time as us. They walked out surrounded by a thick mist... I won't mention the delicate aroma of well broiled death metalllers...

  10. So while I assemble the bits and bobs for the re finish - another task: The somewhat manky rosewood saddle needs to be changed seeing as we are going all ebony. I wasn't subtle getting it out ... in with the 3/4 inch chisel and resistance was futile. As you can see some stripping has been started. God I hate the smell of acetone in the morning! A saddle cut from some nice ebony ... I curve-chamfered the ends in a decorative manner and glued it in ... I'm stripping the bass by installments - the f holes are tricky so they get done separately from the rest of the top ... did I mention ...I HATE THE SMELL OF ACETONE. Next update will probably see the bass stripped

  12. Thanks Dave, It should be good. We've been playing Summerfest every year since 2009. However for the last 3 years we were relegated to what I call low profile kiddie stages. This is the first time in 3 years where we're back on a respectable and proper stage. Daryl

  13. Maple Road will be performing at The Big Gig, Summerfest the worlds largest music festival this Saturday. Set time is 1:45-2:30 and then 3:30-4:15. We're on The Johnsonville Stage. "We received 3 digital parking passes for Lot E today. Max and Rory, I will send you each one later today, Daryl will ride with us, and we need to be to the Lot by 11:45am on Sat." We only got in because the band originally booked canceled. Daryl

  14. I would say no. That bridge P will be next to useless other than to add the thinnest of flavours to something else. I built this a few years ago, interesting experiment but, in the end, there wasn't really anything in it I couldn't get close enough to from the likes of a L2000. Unless, of course, you're just playing solo in the bedroom and are feverously chasing microtonal changes. In a mix, nobody will notice how clever your pickup choices are 😄

  15. Yamaha RBX 6JM John Myung Ruby Red from the 14th of September 1999, now fitted with a way better Glockenklang 3 bands preamp (the original Yamaha preamp will be delivered, but I have no idea if it's working) and a second John Myung signature on the body, which is clear coated, so unremovable! A Dream Theater fan must have bass, but for the others, it's an excellent very heavy bass (5.220 kilos) with a narrower strings spacing at the bridge (16.5 mm) and very very very slightly protruding frets (these 3 facts are well known for this early series alongside the fact that the center of the infinity inlay is at the ... 13th fret, go figure). NO TRADES! NON NEGOTIABLE PRICE! Asking price including fully insured shipping with tracking number, to your home, in these European countries (ask for other countries): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (excluding DOM -TOM), Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom: €850 EUR (£775 GBP is an approximation and I will only accept payment in Euros)!!! Shipping to the UK is of course possible and included in my asking price, but with additional customs charges (VAT + other taxes + courier costs), as the UK is now outside the EU, just ask. In perfect working order and in good to to very good condition, with the usual marks at the usual places, but almost no fret wear. Here are the specifications : Body: alder Top: figured maple veneer with a second John Myung signature under the clear coat, so unremovable Neck: bolt-on 3 pieces hard maple Fingerboard: ebony with infinity inlay (radius 23-5/8" or 600 mm) Positions: 24 medium frets with front infinity inlay and side white dots Headstock: 3+3 with John Myung signature Tuners: original Yamaha (Gotoh GB7) Pickups: 2 original Yamaha AlNiCo stacked humbuckers (very Jazz Bass sounding) Controls: volume (active/passive push-pull), blend, bass, mids, treble (tone control in passive mode) Preamp: Glockenklang 3 bands (the original Yamaha preamp will be delivered, but I have no idea if it's working) Bridge: original Yamaha solid brass Strings spacing at bridge: 16.5 mm Nut: bone (50mm width) Strings spacing at nut: 9 mm Knobs: original Yamaha (metal) Scale: 35 inches (889 mm) Hardware colour: gold with Schaller Strap-Locks buttons on the bass Truss rods: two, double action, 100% functional Finish: gloss Ruby Red Country of origin: Taiwan Serial number: PP14025 Year: 14/09/1999 (first generation of the RBX 6JM) Weight: 5.220 kg! Action : from 1.5 mm under the C string to 2.0 mm under the B string at 24th position (can even go lower, but was more than perfect for me and it's already super low with a very straight neck) and yes this is measured at the SECOND OCTAVE!!! Will be delivered in an used unknown brand semi-rigid gig bag (totally adapted to this bass). Non-smoking environment as usual. The bass has been fully set up professionally. It has received a new battery and is fitted with a set of used DR Black Beauties BKB6-30 round wound stainless steel coated strings (30 - 45 - 65 - 85 - 105 - 125), which really serve this bass. What you see is what you get ! Look carefully at the photos taken from different angles and lights to see the real condition, which is good to to very good with the usual marks at the usual places, but almost no fret wear. Here is the link to the 18 photos in high resolution: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Tm5VaOy3sxcU8nnu1CnheOU25VwSio0L?usp=drive_link Due to severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus left and right shoulders injury, without mentioning a painful tendonitis on the right arm, I'm selling all the basses I'm not using like this one. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. Don't hesitate to ask for more, but, please, before asking read my ad first as the answer is certainly already in it!

  17. In my gigging band: The singer is in 1 other band The drummer is in 2 other bands Guitar One is in 2 other bands Guitar Two is in 2 other bands I’m in 1 other permanent band, and standing in for my old band for a while We don’t gig too often, and only rehearse when we have a gig, but when we do it’s tight and sounds good. I think it’s all about dedication and application, not bigging us up mind as what we do isn’t particularly difficult, but everyone knows to show up with their best game.

  18. I agree with a lighter gauge string being used for a better B string tone. To my ears the heavier the string the less well-defined it sounds.

  20. Only 2 according to your profile. Welcome aboard. Post a Hello/ Hi on the introductions forum, and reply to a few threads. Just join in generally. Then all of a sudden you'll have thousands of posts of random rubbish and no friends in real life other than those you meet at bass bashes. And if you stray into the Marketplace then you'll also have no money and a reputation for meeting strange men and women in supermarket car parks up and down the country. Don't ask how I know... 😅

  21. I used to commute to Birmingham, each spring I had this odd experience where my eyes would water as I was driving down the M42 for a month or so. After several years I eventually realised it was hay-fever... or more likely tree pollen. I still get a bit of it but the odd thing is if I take a single antihistamine tablet, it pretty much goes away until the next year.

  23. I'm going to miss the Bristol store, what else will I do when the family are hitting the shops. I'll miss Mansons in Exeter more though. It's been inevitable for some time that these stores would be in trouble. If we all trot off to Thomann and the like for our needs then they are bound to suffer. It's not as if the rest of the high street isn't in the middle of a huge upheaval also. I don't think the situation has been helped by the likes of Gibson and Fender forcing them to carry huge stocks either. The other reality is that the guitar has probably lost it's dominance in music and 'peak guitar' was actually back in the early 80's with perhaps it's own indy revival. On the bright side I'm seeing a couple of independent shops benefitting. Often by offering other services. In Chard (a small Somerset market town) we have The Somerset Music Academy, it's a guitar shop which also offers guitar and other music tuition combined with a repair and set up service. It combines a steady turnover of used gear with a range of um... lesser known brands. Even this has a twist, they are careful what they stock and every instrument gets a set up before they sell it. There are some very playable, nice sounding instruments at reasonable prices. Something you can't get from the warehouses. The tuition gives them a stream of customers for starter instruments and the kids get something decent to start their journey with. I believe they plan on running a rehearsal room too. There's so little competition out there that people will travel to go somewhere you can try before you buy.

  24. I use taperwound 125 B strings on all of my 31.5" scale ACG basses and they sound and feel great! They also tune down to A and remain equally good. I actually think the design, construction and setup of a bass has more to do with a solid low B than using a super massive string.

  28. Just checking back in to report on how the Spirocores are settling in. I’ve done a few gigs and multiple rehearsals with them and I’m absolutely loving them. They’ve really opened up the tone of my old Boosey Hawkes Excelsior and are really rewarding to play. Dig in, and these strings respond with all the growl you could ever need, go with a lighter touch and you have mwah for days, and vibrato shimmers. I only play pizz so I can comment on how they play/sound under the bow. All in all the took about a week to fully settle and about another month of light use to fully open up.

  34. Might work rather well, I doubt you'd ever use the bridge P-PUP soloed but it might blend very nicely with one or more of the others. If it were for sale at a decent price I'd certainly give it a go, especially as it appears to be wearing a bunch of cream Dimarzios, defo my fave PUPs, the colour has a huge effect on tone

  35. It's subjective isn't it. If you were in the market for an ACG let's say, some might look to buy new and spec it up to their liking and pay full retail, some might be very happy with something 90% to their liking and pay say 30% less on the second hand market. Neither is 'right', its entirely subjective. I've bought many basses that I simply wanted to try, some I've loved and kept, some I've enjoyed for a short time and moved on, some I've broke even, some I've came out on top a little and some I've lost a little on. For me, buying second hand at a price I'm reasonably confident I won't loose money on allows me to enjoy and play significantly more basses than I ever would do if I'd only bought new. It's also vastly broadened my horizons in terms of what I now really look for in a bass - it's honed my 'wants' to an extremely specific list that I know suits me perfectly. As I say, tis all subjective with no correct answer! Do what suits you.

  37. I suppose the difference being is that if you spent 4k on a custom build it'll be worth approximately 2k the day its delivered to you, whereas if you buy a 4k bass on the second hand market (Wal, Fodera etc.) it'll probably be worth 4k if/when you move it on, assuming you haven't paid well over the odds.

  41. .125 string, has the zing of a smaller string but enough heft to add weight behind the note. Much, much more importantly than that, the setup on the bass needs to be spot on. Neck as straight as you can get away with, nut cut well. When you string a new string, when just under tension, push down hard at the break angle over the bridge saddle (towards pickup) to create a cleaner break. Makes the world of difference. Experiment with tapered strings too.

  42. I've been taking prescription anti-histamines (not the ones you get in a shop) in hay fever season since I've been a teenager. I do have some special beeswax type thing to wipe inside my nose, along with nasal sprays, etc. I once did a big blues festival type gig in Dundee once while having a major attack. It must have looked a bit strange to any eagle eyed punters to see a box of tissues on top of my rig, with the cover behind the cab half filled with used tissues - not exactly rock n'roll! It was actually a great gig in a pretty big packed venue, but I was relieved to get through it...

  44. Hobgoblin is more your folk music shop - they do have acoustic basses (4 string, fretless and even a 5 string which they made for me). But they specialise in stuff that other shops don't stock: accordions, thumb pianos, erhu (Chinese violin), Indian lap-harmoniums, fretless banjos, marimba, chambord, bagpipes, and a couple of zebra-hides worth of African drums. If you haven't heard of it, can't play it, and don't need it, Hobgoblin stock it.

  45. @TorturedSaints I suspect that’s mine you're talking about. It is priced based on a valuation (which was considerably more than it’s offered for) by Bowspeed who also did the work. The valuation came as a great surprise to me when I’d dropped it in for the work to be done. I’d assumed it was just a cheapy which would be good as a backup. I’m a hack on DB so I thought a decent pernambuco bow in excellent condition for less than someone might pay new might be of interest to better players than me, but what do I know. I haven’t advertised it here because frankly I didn’t want to rub it in the seller’s face, but then, they could have had it repaired etc themselves had they wanted to.

  46. PAIR of Vintage 1980's Westone Thunder I & 1A Passive & Active Electric Basses from Matsumoku Factory, Japan - Fretless & Fretted. Manufactured between 1981 and 1989. Serial numbers 2021811 & 4071308 Check out the Westone website as it holds useful information. Different eras of this iconic bass but otherwise very much the same instrument (other than being fretted/fretless + active/passive). The f/less bass has been converted from an originally fretted bass. There are the usual signs of pitting/wear to the original metallic hardware (SEE PHOTOS). Pots run smooth with no crackle currently when played. Knobs pitted and aged. There are signs of surface scratching and small dings etc. as photographed. One set of the original 'westone' tuners have been replaced with a generic set. Not tried it, but the necks could be swapped across if the active circuit preferred in the fretted bass. Each instrument has a basic, somewhat tatty, generic hardcase, so they'd have to be courier'd separately. I'd prefer to sell as the pair but might consider splitting (and relisting) IF there's interest in both individually.
