If there's one thing we should learn from the last 20 months, it's that the virus doesn't care how many fingers you stick up at it. I stuck many fingers up at it and it got me last month; just be careful.

Did a trade on another forum with one of my guitar amps and this was the result.

Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes, Black & White - JJs tone and aggressive style and the sheer visceral sound of his bass still gets me buzzing. Sons & Fascination, Sister Feelings Call and New Gold Dream - IMO Simple Minds lost something when Derek Forbes left. All his lines, even the simpler ones, are crackers that drive the tunes. Lexicon of Love by ABC - great melodic basslines from start to finish that stand out but don't overpower the songs Sulk by The Associates - really imaginative and unusual but melodic basslines by Michael Dempsey. Check out Better This Way, Club Country and Skipping.

I've just rejected a request to play NYE. I've avoided Covid for almost two years, not going to stick my head in its maw for a bunch of whizzed backside people. So my band days could be numbered...

Just got my nice new 4003CB WG Rick bass., stunning. Nice contrast with my old 4001. It's a new Custom Build 4003 with checker binding, toaster pup & Walnutglo finish. with high gloss fretboard. Great new style bridge & single twin action truss rod. Love em both.

I'm mostly going to invest in improving my playing this year. I'm getting some lessons to improve my sloppy technique and theory. Lots of jam sessions to push me to improvise. I may sell my Musicman Sterling Ray34 and Ray35 to buy a full fat EBMM Stingray 4. Need to try one to see how much better than my Sterling's it is. I may also treat myself to the Justin Chancellor signature Cry Baby fuzz wah

Great to see Rick Beato talking about and listening to several of my fav bands (Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana) in this more than 90min video. Cool stuff. Check it out!

Just ordered one of these. Kind of on a whim, kind of because I fancied a bass specific OD. One of my favourite bands are High/Low from the same part of the world that these are made and they use Raygun effects. As they've always made a righteous noise I thought why not. I'll keep you posted.

It's not as finished as I wanted & the Mrs wanted to redo her vocal (she hates her voice, but I love it). I'm fairly happy with what we've done so far & hope to get her singing more songs for me. Edited as I felt the vocal was slightly on top of the song (rather than part of it). Bass is a mix of synth and real, I played both parts. This morning my DAW decided to get Christmas Eve off. It was my fault as I decided to click the update button then it f#cked off into the oblivion of the hard drive maze. 7 hours later and after a couple of tumblers of Scotch I retrieved it. Now , I feel a bit socially tired to mix/master the song. Anyway, hoping to contribute with my piece. Update. So, this is a cover version of DP Boulevard's 'Point if View'. Not something I listen to, but I've recently heard it in the radio and thought why not to do something different. Gear used , Played cheap drum kit I owned since May and practice once a weekish, Glyn John`s technique recording. ( I found this sounding best when using 4 mics) Guitars were played through Amplitbe 4 for convenience. Bass was recorded through a Fender bass combo , recorded with AKG112 mic almost touching the speaker just of the centre. Keys are Syntronik and Sample 4 played with midi Launchkey keyboards. The rest , co called vocals, well....I need to work on those.

Listen to Wayward Son by Kansas and spot many influences on JJ Burnells bass playing. If JJ was unaware of the song at the time then he managed to develop some very similar styles by other means. I don’t say this in a slagging off fashion, I like The Stranglers a lot, I was just rather amazed when learning Wayward Son earlier this year at how similar it is to a lot of their basslines.

Ok I need to point out the way my title has been misunderstood. I'm not saying I don't care if I catch Covid. I've spent most of December in bed, I've missed all my gigs because of it. So today I put two fingers up to the virus which has kept me under and I managed to gig . That's all I'm saying.

My last gig of 2012 was 4/12 and I’m thankful that I’m not in crowded venues through this Christmas and New Year.

I remember Macari's in the latter days after they moved to Charing Cross Road. I'd get drunk at lunchtimes and wander round and stare in the window. On one occasion I bought a Danelectro U2 in there; it seemed like a good idea under the circumstances.

Absolute shame. Met her years ago when the band I was in did a session on her show. She couldn’t have been more hospitable and welcoming. RIP.

2022 will also hopefully be the year that I finally get hold of an EBMM Stingray 4, 2 EQ, natural finish, and maple FB. Needs contouring (so no pre-EB, Classic or Old Smoothie slab body). I know they exist but there aren't probably that many floating around. The photo shows a classic, so it is almost what I want (but lacks the contouring).

That's a Stanley Clarke model with the point body (remember that you can order whatever shape you want by Alembic) as it doesn't have the hum-cancelling system, but the AXY pickups with the two filters and the two Q switches. So definitely a Stanley Clarke model.
