  1. I certainly DID read the notification about backing up PM's because all messages will be lost. That's why I have, you know, backed up my PM's before the switch over date. BassChat did it's best to let everyone know. I managed to get the message ok and I was under piles and piles of vomit these last couple of weeks.

  5. Honestly, I don't mind the feedback. I know there are things to clean up and sort and I'll do all I can, if I still had hair I would be pulling it out. Thing is though, I saw this forum software before all the issues and once the performance cracks on it'll fly along and is a lovely smooth experience. Some stuff I didn't anticipate I'll try to add in as long as it doesn't clutter things up or slow it down too much. The nicest thing for everyone involved will be the fact that now we have supported software where we're in the driving seat, if there's a popular feature that people want then we can look into that! Ultimately, we love the forum and it's the members that make it up, it's nothing without our community after all.

  6. This is easy, for two reasons. Reason 1 - The Birdies Song (Portsmouth Radical Club 24/12/1978) Reason 2 (same night) - a member of the audience (dancing to the same number) died on the dance floor. Over to you, everyone! :-)

  7. I’ve taken a dep in a couple of weeks, which will involve me playing ‘Quando, Quando , Quando’ in a social club. 30 years of graft for this. Shoot me now. :-D

  8. I've not had a chance to watch this properly yet myself so don't I don't know if it's a good watch or not but anything that shines a spotlight on the often under-appreciated John Deacon has to be worth at least a look.

  9. New site is beautiful and a pleasure to use , well done! Pity about the PMs - they were useful for sale & trade history. Fortunately I managed to find most of my conversations in my gmail, using search term: basschat personal conversation May be helpful to others

  10. I'd like to just say thanks for all of the efforts in improving site. Having worked on system upgrades for the last 20 years I know how difficult they can be and the problems faced. Hopefully the majority of users won't be impacted by the lost pm's and can appreciate the benefits of the new features.

  16. Now £850 Absolutely gorgeous and super light bass. Only selling as I really need a passive jazz so will be using proceeds to fund another Maruszczyk order. Weighs 3.48kg (7lb 7oz) so super light and comfortable. Alder body with flamed maple top and matt finish. Maple neck with matt finish and maple fingerboard. Bassculture pickups with active 3 band delano preamp. Three way toggle switch for the humbucker (series / single coil / parallel). Passive with tone control with push pull active / passive volume pot. Monorail bridge with 18mm string spacing. Build completion date 04-01-2017. One small mark on the rear of the body (pictured) and a tiny scratch on the top of the body which looks like a hair (pictured) otherwise as new condition. can be heard being played badly here Will consider trades with nice yamaha BB basses (4 or 5 string).

  23. @Phil_T I never use the buttons either. There's a marked increase in volume using the silver box Behringer instead of just plugging into the mixer. Since I mainly play a single coil P-bass with flats I appreciate the kick in volume,

  24. Below is the description of the MM pickup. I've done quite a few builds with them. CERAMIC / D.C. =13K- Our Music Man Stingray replacement is an answer to may prayers. The Stingray is a modern classic, but until now, finding a suitable replacement has been difficult. With far less magnetic pull than the originals, ours has full length bar magnets to get every bit of string vibration, no matter how hard you play. Having similar output and tone to the original unit, this improved version has enough output to be used passive, without a preamp. For the authentic Stingray however, a low impedance buffer preamp is recommended. We also strongly suggest series/parallel switch or push/pull pot to get two distinctly different tones made available by the widely spaced coils in this pick-up. Includes wiring diagram and mounting screws.

  29. This Friday I'll be seeing our fellow basschatter Bobby Kewley playing bass for The Christians & Altered images on a triple bill with Midge Ure! Sunday will be Mr Big at Shep Bush, then hopefully next Friday Cloudbusting (Kate Bush tribute) at Putney. After that, possibly Simply Dan in Raynes Park on the Sunday.... Corduroy in Guildford on the following Friday and then Airrace/Lionheart in Camden on the Saturday! Phew....!!

  32. We gigged for Musicians Against Homelessness in 2016/17 - we were the second band Alan McGee picked up in 2016, which was the first year they did it. I think that in 2016 they raised £40K over 100 gigs, which is great considering no one had heard of it, and we raised over a thousand of that over three shows. Now this year of course, everyone and their mother has been doing gigs, which yes, is a good thing, but baddish for bands like us because the whole punters-feeling-good-about-themselves only extends so far. Gerry is a lovely bloke, Christ, I see him putting on shows and then posting at 1.30am the morning after gigs asking whether anyone is driving through Cirencester so he can cadge a lift home. When we did the Swindon Rockets thing earlier in the year he actually walked about ten miles to the place where the gig was on and the same back home because he couldn't get a ride. He put on a full buffet for the bands as well to say thank you. Virtually every gig I do it's rare for the promoter to even buy you a beer, let alone something to eat. I see faceless people getting gongs for doing less than what this guy is doing. He's a fabulous bloke and is doing great things. He needs all the help he can get.

  40. I went with a “set and forget’ approach as I too don’t want to be messing around more than playing. I spent about 5 mins adjusting the trims, but actually found the setting I liked within 2 mins. I know the bass well so it wasn’t hard for me to find it (whilst having the treble and bass slightly boosted). The mid point on the internal trims is at 12 o clock according to the manual, both dials came set at 10 o clock, I’m not sure if that’s deliberate. John was a great guy to email, I had some questions, so I’m sure he’ll answer the factory preset question for you. Now I just use minor tweaks to the bass and treble control, they are very reactive, And the passive tone knob works during active mode too - so you can still get some old school ‘muffled’ bass, if you know what I mean?!

  43. What metal are the parts made out of? Nickel will age reasonably quickly, especially if you rough it up with a scouring pad first. Chrome however, not so much so. In fact, probably not at all. You need a different approach with Chrome. Similarly with x coated brass (depending on what x is)

  45. Compression is something that I think is widely misunderstood by a lot of people. When used in moderation it is the icing on the cake of a great bass tone, in my opinion of course. Because it isn't an obvious effect as such in the way that something like a drive pedal is, some people (and I'm not saying that you are one of them ) have a tendency to set the compressor so that they can hear it working, at which point you're invariably adding way too much squash to your tone and killing all dynamics. The secret of great compression is to use it in moderation so that the peaks are tamed but you still have dynamic control when you're playing. A little goes a long way. Compression is more obvious in a band mix that it is when it's just the bass in isolation. Once you have found the compression sweet spot, the bass will be more punchy and even across its range in the mix that without any form of compression. I find the best way to find the compression sweet spot is to set it up at a rehearsal while the rest of the band are playing, it is more obvious in the mix and at a louder volume than at in-house levels. I prefer to use my ears rather than any sort of in-built metering in the compressor itself. I used to play a lot with a plectrum and used a touch of compression. These days I play more with my fingers and still use compression and I do think it is more obvious with finger playing that with a plectrum, but it is still a subtle effect to listen out for. As with everything in life, there are people who won't like it and you might just be one of them. Nothing wrong with that at all I personally won't leave home with one
