Best music purchase of 2022?

This is a tough one for me to answer as I’m relatively new to bass. This time last year I possessed a Squier Affinity P Bass and a Fender Rumble 15. My gear has gone from zero to hero in 12 months, with a Fender Roadworn series Jazz, a Markbass rig, a vintage Fender Bassman and a few pedals. But the greatest thing I bought this year, and has had the most impact on me personally must be my vintage 1973 P bass. It’s light, plays wonderfully, sounds immense, and inspires me to play every day.

It's going to be a close call between my Musicman Sterling, which reignited my love for the funky Musicman tones, and rediscovering Slinky strings after years of using D'addarios. They sound so much fuller than the EXLs that I was using. I've tried a few different gauges this year but the Hybrid set is the winner as it allows the E to stay full and taught enough when I drop it down to D

Three things...

A Shen SB100 DB that I bought last January, the third DB I have bought but it's the one that will be my "forever" DB, love it and used it on gigs all year.

The Acoustic Image Coda combo amp that came with the bass.

Best purchase of all has been weekly DB lessons since late October, something I should have done years ago. I have learned a lot and sometimes my work with the bow actually sounds pretty good and I am using more of the fingerboard (dusty end) too. I will continue the lessons in 2023. 😊

My best bass related purchase this year was a 2012 US Standard Precision in sunburst/rosewood/tort. Saw it on Reverb, and bought it straight away - excellent condition, sounds just like my 2010 P. The pair of them really cover everything I want to do, but I still have three other basses I can't part with!

Trondheim Audio SkarBassOne has been a constant on my pedalboard since it arrived. Probably my desert island pedal.

Pricewise, the Darkglass Microtubes 500v2 I won in an auction a couple of weeks back…though it still needs a run out in anger to prove its mettle and no unknown problems. Sounded great fired up for a test though a BF One10 when it arrived

My 1965 Fender P. All original. I bought it unseen and took a massive sweaty gamble on it but I lucked out. It's everything I hoped it to be and more.

It's the last bass I'll ever buy.

No, really!!

I’m still trying to decide if I have the cojones to get myself one of these.

I've barely put it down since it arrived, it's just so much fun.

Bought one just over a year ago , can’t keep my hands off it, in fact I bought a Gretsch baritone because the Squier was so much fun.

My UE6 iem’s would rank pretty high,

but my best purchase has probably been my Gator progo X2 double gigbag?

I can fit 2 basses

Sennheiser radio system & iem’s

leads

tool kit

spare strings

iPad & bracket

Microbass3 preamp

virtually everything I need to gig with, apart from stands really?
Makes checking into hotels easy after gigs….Gigbag on back & clothes bag in hand.

Ooh, tough one. Of the 3 purchases I made this year, they’re all very different and all do what they were purchased for very well. Bass wise, I guess my shorty ‘Ray, as this has convinced me that short scale is the way forward for me (says the man who just acquired a 42” scale bass ;)).

IMO a scratch that’s worth itching if you can. If you love it and you’re lucky enough to keep it then it’ll be a great move. And if you ever sell you shouldn’t lose cash. Guess it’s a win win as the long as the cash is there.

That’s the way I justify it to my better half. I think my 73 has gone up quite a bit since I bought it in February.
