I went to Uni in my late 30's, it was the best thing I ever did. My only regret was that I didn't go straight from school, as it would have been free back then. Still, I know that if I had gone straight from school, I certainly wouldn't have done as well as I did.

Definitely go for it and as @EBS_freak says, treat it like a 9-5 and you'll fly through it.

Totally! Unlike a lot of people, I would actually encourage a year out between school and university (but not one of those gap year jollies to Ghana to find yourself or whatever nonsense it's dressed up as) to get used to the pattern of getting up, going to work and having a bit of responsibility about it all, away from the safety of the parents safety net.

When I was at university, I would wager that the majority of students could have done better and actually learned more if they treated it with a job mindset... instead of getting whizzed up, living off Pot Noodle (a guy that I lived with ended up getting scurvy from his beer and pot noodle diet) and sleeping.

Wayne punkdude is still around, I see him on some Fb sales pages and musicians groups. There’s quite a few names that have come up in this thread that I’d forgotten all about! I remember Xliddx pretty well, could be pretty robust when debates got heated. Also remember the fact that he wore gloves when playing and owned a Warwick Chrometone Streamer. I remember Billbass or billonbass(?) he lives not far from me, he probably left when he got the Rag n Bone man gig. He’s a monster player and a really great guy too

In my day, going to uni meant not having to get a proper job. It was about getting pished and laid for 3 years. I managed to do plenty of the former, and not as much of the latter.

Xliddx (Nigel) is one of my Facebook friends. He is a really nice guy and gigs regularly as Covid allows. It's a shame he's not on here any longer.

I quit FaceBook a year or so back as it was just getting me down. However, at that time Nige was in my circle. Thoroughly lovely, principled guy

I'm sure I recall  Outtoplayjazz left under a bit of a cloud. I could be mistaken though.

He was a professional bass player who was a very articulate and interesting guy who wrote some excellent gear reviews. If I remember there was some issue about a sale. I was sad to see him go.

He's still on Talkbass.

He's one of my Facebook friends as well and a thoroughly lovely guy. It's always great to chat to him.

I haven’t gone away. I just don’t have much to say these days.😉

I'm nicking that for the epitaph on my gravestone, just to spook people.....;)

Almost as good as that of the late, great Spike Milligan: "I told you I was ill".

I went to university in my mid-thirties with the same fears as you.

But it turned out that the student age-range was very diverse and, anyway, who I got on with socially was not determined by age alone.

Having said that, it pays not to be nor to appear to be a 'pompous old git' - which I am sure you're not.

As for being 'on a totally different wavelength', there are people of your own age 'on a totally different wavelength'.

Good luck with it.

100% completely agree.

I'm 36 and in my first year of University. The life experience I've had up to now has proven ENORMOUSLY useful and respected by the younger students, who often come to me for help rather than the lecturers.

I say go for it.

I went back to college in my mid 30's too (circa 95). Being an Instrument / electrical engineer i found technology had moved from pneumatics to electronics and programmed systems. I wanted to bring myself back up to date. I was the oldest in the classes but that did seem to give me a bit of respect from the younger guys and the lecturers. I also found college and studying a lot easier at that age than when i was 16-20 and more interested in bands, bikes and shall we say socialising.

Have to say it opened some doors for me within the Industrial Gases company i worked for.

I really enjoyed my 2 yrs back at college and came out with great results.

I would highly recommend being a mature student at college.

There was a guy into his effects pedals in a big way and i think played as a solo bassist. I cant recall his name tho but he offered a lot of good advice on his pedals. Not seen him comment for a long time ?

JTUK & Xiddix i also remember and recall advice and sharing comments with both.

Dont recall any worrying or concerning issues with JTUK. He was always helpful as far as i can remember. I tend to take people at their word and if someone tells me they are doing something or know someone i generally just accept it.

I can vaguely remember an issue that some people had on BC 5-6 yrs ago but for the life of me i cant recall what it was all about. Must have been important then :D

Another legendary name is Major Minor. He wasn't here all that long but his contribution was amazing... his awesome 'Boot Camp' series is one of the best learning resources I have ever seen.

I left the forum because of health reasons over a decade ago - I physically couldn’t really play any longer. I’ve been banned from most of the forums I liked, so it’s probably just as well! 🤣

I’ve since realised that my buying and selling of (quality 😊) gear was an addiction.
Most people really don’t like having their strongly held beliefs questioned, even by ‘nice guys’.

Sorry to hear about the health stuff!

I know what you mean about the buying and selling addiction.. I frequent a couple of other forums in other fields, and the same thing happens. Easy to be drawn into it, and sometimes quite a down to step back from it! Mind you there's tons of other stuff going on inbetween all that part so well worth staying around for me.
