  1. New Tiny Pink Bass Day!!! It's me birfday, innit! And my lovely partner & lifelong co-conspirator in crimes against music knows well enough what will delight and enchant me. And she has nailed it. As most of you will know (there already being an exhaustive thread about these) it's a Cort GB Shortscale - a 30" shorty with a J width neck and single 'bucker, 3 band eq and series/parallel/single coil switching. First impressions - it's incredibly playable - lately I've been playing way more guitar than bass and picking this up feels like no transition at all. The setup's OK - the action will go lower & E string intonation's slightly off - but the fretwork's impeccable, not the slightest buzz & no sharp ends. My previous experience with (admittedly very low-end) short & medium scales had me half-expecting floppy-feeling, dead sounding E & A strings but string tension's spot on, and everything feels right. Plugged in, it's a beast. I've barely scratched the surface with what the EQ & switching will do, but first impressions are that it's stupidly versatile. I love it. And it's so... so... PINK!

  2. Got an audition for a new band tonight... About 70% certain on the ten songs I was given to learn. To be honest, I'm not nervous at all. At nearly 61, if it doesn't work out I'll not be peeved. Not a huge shift in style from my last band. More modern metal then old school death metal which the last lot did. Looking forward to be back playing more than anything 😁

  3. Bloody good gig at the Exchange tonight. Left us all buzzing. It was short notice so unrehearsed for ages. We have a big gig at the Earl Haig in February and two rehearsals to sort new material. After tonight happy we don't have to focus on the existing set.

  4. Off to the Hartshead Moor WMC on Saturday for a 60th birthday bash. We'd done one of those last year and it was essentially a paid rehearsal with nobody up and dancing really until we were near the end of our second set, and when we saw the size of the party we weren't confident, but this lot were a lot livelier, with dancers up in varying amounts from the middle of our first set, and we went down well. It turned out the organiser, the birthday boy's niece, had seen us before, so knew what to expect, and we pretty much nailed everything right up to the drummist ending our last song Two Tribes two bars too early. Fortunately we were all well aware he can never remember when it ends every time so managed to style it out, although it sounded a touch anticlimactic. Went with the Siredowsky and trusty ABM into the Two10S, which was probably overkill given the volume dial didn't get above 9 o'clock, which was also good because apparently the club often gets complaints when bands are too loud so we played quieter than we thought we would, but with the bonus that said drummist comments that he could actually hear all of us for once! 😂 We politely rebuffed the birthday boy's husband's entreaties to let him buy us drinks, but I gratefully accepted the offer to snag a couple of muffins from the buffet on the way out. Home by 10 and actually got to hang out with the missus for a bit, which was nice. (We've played smaller stages but this was the first time our singist had experienced a bass guitar to the head so was grumbling a bit)

  5. Right, let's get @paul_5gate out of the way. The way I read it, I reckon the majority ruling is T2 failure, but still OK for T1. Everyone OK with this ruling?

  7. Selling my Olinto P-Bass from 2024 in "British Racing Green". I got this bass in a trade a short while ago. It definitely sounds better than my former Fender CS Pino and Sean Hurley, or Moon bass. This one sounds like Freddie Washington’s P-Bass! Awesome fingerstyle and slap tone! However, I already have two other 4-strings that I barely use, so this one has to go. Alder body Roasted maple neck Madagascar rosewood Weight: 3.7–3.8 kg Includes case Sale is made with exclusion of any warranty. No returns, no guarantee. (Partial) trades are not possible! But in this case we have to meet in person! I am interested in Adamovic, Mattison, Yamaha JP/NE, Status, preferably 6-strings. Not interested in Fender, Ibanez, Sandberg or fretless basses. I am always open to sensible offers.

  8. Just driven to the local Lidl, first time since the freeze, and the pot holes have got much worse. I was dodging all over parts of the road to avoid them, and the oncoming traffic was doing the same. My wife said we used to drive on the left of the road, now we drive on what’s left. Not original, probably found it on Facebook, but I did laugh.

  9. First show of 2026 and we played a micro brewery in Calne, Wiltshire. Super friendly staff and great little space. No real walk up (it was on an industrial estate) but we had 4 or 5 groups of people come especially to see us, which filled up the audience. The only low point was when I made a flippant joke about Red Hot Chilli Peppers (who, whilst not really being a fan, I certainly don’t have an issue with) and it transpired that everyone in the venue liked them! The bar man even put them on the stereo after our set! I never criticise other acts normally so I don’t know why I said it, but we soon clawed it back. No harm done. Afterwards, I was asked why I had six pedals when I only have two feet. A comment that I reflected heavily upon, whilst driving home in my manual car! We played well and I was pleased we pulled as many as we did. A good night.

  13. The audition went well. Blasted through seven of the ten songs. The usual botche and getting lost once or twice. But generally a positive vibe from the band. They're auditioning one more bass player next week, so a ten day wait for a decision.... Good bunch of guys as well.

  14. Schroeder 1212L (The L being ‘Lightweight’) 2 x 12 Neodymium Cab with Tweeter. 800 watts @ 4 ohms and 19.5kg this is a one hand lift one can solution for any gig. It has the second 12” cab at an angle behind the first so it’s much smaller than most 2x12’s These cabs are fantastic, and shine in the mix of a live band - for more on this Mark from Talking Bass wrote a piece on his experience using a Schroeder 1212L on his website https://www.talkingbass.net/schroeder-1212-cabinet/ It has a Schroeder padded cover, the cab is in good condition - there’s a few nicks in the paint where it’s been scuffed carrying it but I’ve reflected it in the price, it’s far from being anything close to ‘tatty’ and has definitely not had a hard life at all and I’ve never even come close to testing how loud it actually goes, which is mainly why I’m selling it - I rarely use amps & cabs and when I do I need sub 500w and space is a premium so I want a 1x10 or 1x12 max. Stats below 👇 Drivers - Two 12” Custom Neodymium Woofer Horn - 200 Watts Heavy Duty Titanium Bullet Tweeter Inputs - Dual Speakon In/Out Frequency Response - 35 Hz - 20 kHz Impedance - 4 ohm Watts - 800 Watts Rms Maximum Decibels - 103 dB Spl@ 1W/1M Weight - 43 lbs. Dimensions - 23.5”W x 23.5”H x 15”D Price is £295 - a decent reduction on what I paid basically to account for a few nicks at the edge on the paint, it’s basically been used for practice by me for the last 18 months, the odd gig, it’s got tonnes of life left Shipping can be arranged for + £20 (it’s probably going to be £30-40 realistically, but I’ll cover the difference at my end). If you come to collect I’d be happy to drive a bit and meet you if you were coming a fair distance to make it easier for you, or ideally come pick it up (Chester le St DH2) and play through it first (you’ll need to bring your own head to do this now as I’ve sold mine!)

  16. I think it's a free choice, and it's none of my business what any of you choose. I don't really feel like sharing my personal opinion on this, because someone will likely come along to tell me how wrong I am, as is always the case in threads like this.

  18. I'm happy to give my time to charities. I do about 6 hours per week volunteering for samaritans. I give 10% of any freelance money i earn to charities too. I think about where I'd like to donate to help where i think it's needed most. Happy to do charity gigs but it's only right that the organisers don't expect us to be out of pocket. I like to choose where i donate my money. Also there's always an inequality of income amongst band members. It's not fair on those who really need the expenses to have to be the only one that has to stand up and say "I can't afford to do this". If everyone gets expenses those that wish to can quietly donate them back to the charity concerned.

  19. First gig for 6 months, first gig as a 5 piece and only our 3rd in total for TTFC - a 30th birthday party at The Lescar in Sheffield. Cool place, great acoustics and staff. Went ampless with my Fender jazz 5 into a HX stomp - easy peasy. The birthday girl was the bass player in a previous band with our keys, sax and singer. So the crowd was made up of lots of their mates, a proper home fixture. We played well, I was happy with my end, my improved discipline in practising and staying focused onstage is starting to pay off. Recorded the whole thing, I'll post some stuff once it's all edited down. Birthday girl got up on bass for a couple of times, so I got the chance to listen to my own band and take a few pics. A great room for photography too. We've already got more gigs coming in, very gratifying after an extended period spinning the project up and getting the set sorted.

  20. I bought this a year ago to learn to slap, it turns out I really don't get on with headed basses so here I am a year later and still can't slap 😞 This has hung on my wall all this time making me feel guilty about the 2 or 3 hours total that I've played it. It has the Maruszczyk nickels on and it still sings. Comes with the original branded soft case + allen keys (bag never opened) + a EBMM SUB catalogue AND some Rotosounds AND a set of mystery strings More (better) information about the bass and the included stuff in the Basschat ad from when I bought it: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/503320-pending-reduction-sterling-ray34-immaculate-now-£550 Collection/try out/nerd chat from slightly west of Worthing or buyer sorts courier to UK destination.

  21. Some really great recent bitsas on this thread! There was a time around 15 years ago I was building a bitsa pretty much every year, but lately been winding the bass playing down, got too many basses altogether, and spending time and money on other things....... However, I realised last year that I had enough parts lying around to build probably at least 2 complete bitsas - so thought I'd make the effort to make a final pair. The first, a fairly conventional Jazz-type, was really just a matter of putting the parts together; most of the work was in finishing the body. All parts previously used (mainly from here and eBay) except for circuit, control knobs, and neck plate. Ash G&B jazz body with rear-routed controls, slab top with tort binding (NB: top is not a separate facing / cap but the front of the body wood). Sealed with French polish- which nicely accentuated previous wear - and top coated with clear nitrocellulose lacquer. Squier (Indonesian) Jazz neck and tuners - surprisingly nice Passive Cellinder Jazz pickups, VVT passive circuit (CTS / Switchcraft) Badass II bridge Schaller strap-locks You'll notice it's not finished; I haven't cut out a rear control cavity cover - mainly as my garage has been too bloomin' cold! 🥶 But already using it as my home practice bass; it plays nicely, and as you'd expect the Armstrong-made Cellinder pickups sound sublime

  22. I think it's different for originals bands. All the charity gigs I have done with various originals bands over the years have been multi-band affairs that put us in front of a receptive audience, many of whom may not have seen us before. Often the charity aspect of these events takes a bit of back seat, the bands get paid expenses and it is first and foremost about the music, then about raising awareness about the cause(s) being supported. The fact that there will be money going to the Charity afterwards is a well-appreciated bonus. It appears to be a completely different world to churning out a couple of covers sets to a potentially uninterested group of people.

  23. If I was auditioning, it would be 3 songs and that's it. If the decision was a yes straight away then I might 'jam' the other 7 but that's a ridiculous ask for an auditionee.

  26. An excellent 6/12-stage phaser, being a clone of the revered Moogerfooger 103. I’ve just received a brand new exemplar from Andertons today as a replacement for one I bought a few months ago that had a loose connection. I’m on a drive to raise money due to unemployment so don’t even want to put this on my board. As yet I haven’t even opened it. I’m happy to leave it unopened or to open to test and photograph for the buyer (once payment is received) if desired. Price includes recorded UK postage. Stock photo for illustrative purposes.

  27. This is a lovely lightweight p bass, I don't have proper luggage scales but I think it comes in at about 6lb14oz. I replaced the pickups with some Fender late 50's pickups which give a classic p bass tone. I shielded it with copper tape when I did this for good measure. It's all working fine, there is a slight dint in the back of the neck around fret 1.5, and a very fine and a scratch there too: I've tried to photograph these, but I don't notice them when playing. Thankfully this is the Mike Dirnt (green day) version that only has the little star on the back plate. I can also confirm that I have successfully played songs not written and performed by Green Day on this bass.

  28. Tree wood? I would hazard a guess at something in the mahogany area, or maybe walnut? But I only know if I have a lump of any type of wood if I bought it and wrote on it what it is so my advice may not have much use.

  29. Been that way for years. Maple mostly comes from Canada. CTS pots are made in Taiwan. Tuners either come from Schaller in Germany or Ping in China. Roswell in Korea ship pickups and pickup parts to Corona. Hardware like bridges, knobs and strap buttons, all made in Korea. Unlikely, FMIC are a minnow compared to others. Corona puts out 1500 units per week, say 80,000 pa. China's Zheng'an county has 130 factories producing 2.25 million guitars a year 😀 Guangzhou has maybe 20 factories. Then there's Cort, Samick, World Music Instruments, half dozen plants in Japan.

  30. I think the tort guards can make or break a bass, the only ones that come close to the originals are spitfire and Avantguard , but they are really expensive

  31. Brilliant post, Spencer! For me, it's the white/parchment/mint that always looks wrong. They make a nice bass look cheap (unless it's mint on aged white), because that's what the Mexican basses had in the 80's & 90's. A nice dark red or brown tort goes with practically everything, and a black scratch guard solves all colour crimes. I recently put a tasteful dark red tort on a black American Professional II Jazz I took in as a p/x. Looks much better than the OEM mint.

  33. Tell me about it. Those donation boxes in Tesco and others, where you are asked to deposit food you've paid for to be given to charity, always annoy me. So Tesco et al get paid full price, including their mark-up, for stuff, which they then pass on to local charities. Do they offer you stuff at cost if you put it in the charity box? Do they say "Thank you to our generous customers" (or even name-check them) when passing on stuff they've sold at full price/a profit? Er, no. So they get extra sales, plus a pat on the back and publicity for their "generosity". Makes you sick.

  34. Loving both of those bitsas Chris, but that natural ash Jaguar-eque P/MM fretless really is a thing of beauty Agree about the pickups - IMHO the Nordstrand Bigman is the best sounding MM pickup out there - I put one in my Warwick Streamer Jazzman LX (J p/up is a Bartolini B-axis)

  36. I’m not so sure, last audition I had was told of 3 songs off the bands album. Got to the audition, they asked me where I wanted to start and my reply was let’s do the album start to finish. My thoughts are it doesn’t hurt to learn a good few songs even if I don’t get the job, as surely I must like those songs in order to be auditioning for a band that plays them. I did get the job btw.

  43. I work on a commercial basis with lots of the UK’s largest charities. Work organised by the charity mostly on commercial terms with a small (and discretionary) discount. We offer 25% off for example. There’s a big difference for fundraising events. These are typically organised by people to raise cash for a charity. These are often where you’ll be asked to work for free and organisation may not be as good.

  44. That seems to imply that we should feel guilty that we are not paid minimum wage and feel obliged to play for nothing. I am reasonably comfortably off and I don't object to playing the occasional charity gig, but, as I point out, I will not actually lose money. I could afford to throw in the cost of a few gallons of petrol, but I won't, because I am already giving my time and effort for nothing. I feel it's disrespectful to expect me to actually pay for the privilege of playing for free. That's just me, of course and YMMV.

  45. I owned a Sei for a short while many moon ago (time stamp on these pics say it was 20 fecking years ago...Wow),Sold all but one my basses and guitars to get the Ca$h together to buy it (as i recall it was £1250 off of ebay from a guy in blackpool) I Sold after i got the self building bug to buy a load of wood working tools/gear and wood to start building my own stuff.....have to say It was a fantastic feeling/playing (& looking) bass with the highest craftmanship i've seen...but the Barts/Preamp seemed to lack any punch and i couldn't get anything like the grit i could get from my Spector/TP (which was the only bass i kept)... Pics (in case anyone recognises it !)... i had the matching Buckeye knobs made by a guy in the USA (£75 for the set, that's not something i be willing to pay for these days! (just because i could cnc them myself )
