  1. Just got in from my last Spacewasters gig as a full band member (I will be depping for them next year for one gig). Was at The Milton Arms, Southsea, Portsmouth, supporting The Witchdoktors (great band btw). The Witchdoktors provided the backline which was very decent of them, we only had to provide cymbal stands, so made for an easy gig, our drummer drove so all good there. We played well and went down well, though it wasn’t as large an audience as when we’d previously played there, even on pay day, maybe people holding onto cash for Xmas. I played my JMJ Mustang through an Orange Crush (I think) combo, which sounded very nice. Footwear was DM Chelsea/Dealer boots. And now back indoors, well I hurt all over, really reinforcing that my leaving is the right decision, a real shame but I’ve had 4 great years with the band, am so glad I joined them for those years.

  2. Just got back in from depping on a gig as part of a big fundraising evening for a blood cancer charity in Leicester’s Winstanley House. Lovely venue, huge room. Pretty late gig, starting at 10pm, but people were still up for a dance and it was pretty lively. Got completely lost in the dark trying to get out (I’ve only lived in Leicester for 20 years….) and was gonna find a McDonald’s on way home but it was super late and I couldn’t be bothered. Gear was my old vintage P bass with its new Labella DTB flats, thru the usual Markbass traveller rig and pedal board. Flatwounds have been the sound in my head for a while for this sort of material and tho I took a BB bass with me I only used it for the final song. Footwear was by Clarks. Black jeans by M&S.

  3. Friday lunchtime in a central Bournemouth church. We do it twice a year and share the retiring collection with the venue. Church has a regular audience for the music and we add to it - have had 100 folk before but 65 was just fine given the season. The promoter got up to sing on Mojo Workin’ and we played two encores. One of which debuted Time Is Tight. Love a bit of Booker T… Gear: Flea Jazz (currently in ‘for sale’ section), GK MB200 through Barefaced Two10.

  4. Hey gang For a while now I've been on the hunt for a J to use on my Eagles tribute gig. I picked this up a few days ago, and - ever-wary that you don't quite know what a bass really sounds like until you've gigged it - after a couple of shows I've happily torn the plastic film off the pickguard. It's absolutely lovely. Light, resonant, even across the neck, and sits perfectly in the mix. A nice smooth top, with a lovely growl when you slide and dig in. Happy days.

  5. Wouldn’t let me type before - no idea why. Good gig last night helping some mates out. they’d agreed to the gig then their bass player moved to a different country so I stepped in. Learned 10 songs, played 7. wasn’t my best performance; first time going ampless and I was a bit thrown by that. sold out Gorilla in Manchester, the main band were half our age - it was like looking at a sea of my daughters mates 😆 Felt very old.

  6. Fender Jazz Bass 1965 Original L series Fender Jazz Bass from 1965 with an old nitro refinish. Possibly the original color was olympic white, as I can’t find a trace of another color in the cavities. The bass is all original, apart from the refinish. The decal is original too, though there has been some sanding around it. Probably to remove the dirt around it. All electronics and hardware function like they should. The neck is straight with a good functioning truss rod. The pickups are the original grey bottoms, which are undated. The pots date to week 12 1965. Overall condition is very good. There are small damages and usermarks around, but nothing shocking. Soundwise it’s one of the (if not the) best jazzes I’ve owned. The sound is warm, deep, clear, punchy… very nice. La Bella flats are fitted; which are a perfect match. Especially through a nice tube amp; just lush. Playability is great too, a low action is not a problem. The neck has a nice worn in feel too it. Weight is 3,95kg on my kitchen scales. The original case is included, and it’s still sturdy and totally functional. The original chrome pickup covers are included as well. This bass will possibly be withdrawn for sale if my '70 Mustang sells first. Price for straight sale €7.000 Partial trades (basses, guitars) are negotiable though. I’d be especially interested in a Modulus 34" scale quantum, Fender or similar electric guitar (strat, jazzmaster, tele) Epiphone sj200 1957, Precision Bass…

  7. Eagles tribute gigs for the last couple of nights. First, Queen's Hall, Edinburgh. It's a gorgeous hall with a lot of history. House PA, extremely good engineer, great lights Best of all, though: 800 people in... on a Thursday night! Hats off to the promoter. Last night was a lovely theatre outside of Whitehaven. A little more cramped, but another very enjoyable night. I used my new (but not new) 1996 MIA Jazz RI, and it's a Bobby Dazzler. Love it. The only downside was the van breaking down as we left Whitehaven. I finally got home just before 5am 😅 💤

  8. A buddy of mine was telling me he didn't like the chunkiness of the beautiful flamed and birdseye maple neck on his Stingray. By chance I have a Stingray with a thinner Status Graphite neck that looks a bit out of place on my honeyburst Stingray, so I offered to switch them. I don't have any photos of the red Stingray before, but I think they both look phenomenal now:

  9. This afternoons gig with BLOCKBUSTARZ Glam covers band was a charity event in Boness that was sold out. We've played this venue many times for charity events, retirements, birthdays and are back again Feb 2026 for a 60th. The guy was at the gig today. Start time was 2pm and we literally had dancers on the floor for the first song and that lasted all the way thru the afternoon. Couldn't have asked for a better audience. When you get a lot of women out for a Saturday afternoon Xmas party they just wanna have fun and they did. The few males that were present also up dancing with everyone on the floor for the last few songs. The new Xmas songs went down a treat and we played well. Had a few hiccups with the PA where it cut out on occasion. Looked like he was running the powered cabs too hard. He decided to leave the subs in the van and just go with his JBL full range cabs. In future we'll always use the subs with them. He notched down the bass and kick drum volumes and i boosted my amp volume to compensate. Still sounded great tho but that solved the issue for the 2nd set. Decided to use my Sandberg MarloweDK for this one as the event was billed as a Xmas event so we went with the tinsel and a more Xmas look. Marlowe sounded excellent thru the Handbox WB-100 and BF212 cab. First time i've used this combination in the Glam band and i was very pleased. Sound guy also commented that it sounded superb out front. Some older ladies wanted to book us for 2027 for a triple birthday party but its a bit too far away to be taking bookings so we asked that they get in touch middle 2026. All in all a good day and home for 7:30pm via the Indian takeaway. Few pics of the stage etc appeared so that's all i have for time being. Dave

  10. Nice example of a Player Precision, and light too at 8.3lbs. Can do with either black tort or white plates as per pics. Holes in the headstock where I added a Hipshot triple retainer, happy to put it back on if required. No case or gigbag so collection/meet only. No trades thanks.

  11. Woods dont need years to dry out, they are kiln dried.Hardwoods tend to take a lot longer because of the density of the timber in question, all hard woods are different as well.By Kiln drying Timber it refers to the concentration of RESIN within the wood the denser the wood the longer it has to spend in the kiln in what we called to "Dry" the Timber. We do this by weighing the Wood then in the kiln which opperate by steam and fans and periodically test the timber with moisture meters and again weighing the Timber til it reaches a certain point of dryness.A couple of examples Mohagany takes longer usualy to dry than Hard Maple as its a more denser timber. Bottom line is ?"How do i know this about timber",well i worked in the Timber industry for 25 years manufacturing hardwood and softwood flush firedoors. Roasted maple takes on average a month to dry the resin tops.

  12. Gonna sort out my gear for tomorrows afternoon gig. Need to leave the house at 10am, Load in 11:15am doors open 1pm and on stage 2pm for 2 x 1hr sets including our Xmas songs. Its been advertised by the venue as their Xmas party event so all good fun. Its a Sold Out one too so that's even better. Early start means early finish. Should be home by 7pm via Indian takeaway. My first in over 4 weeks as on a 6 week weight loss plan from the gym but i'm allowed the occasional lapse the personal trainer said. 2 weeks to go. Lost 3Kg in the first 3 weeks but its levelled out now so need to reduce carbohydrates. I'll be 12st again. Not bad for an old Glam bassist. I burn as many calories at a gig as i do 1 session in the gym classes. The more gigs the healthier i get 😂 Dave

  14. Just got myself this little beauty today. Had been looking for a 7-pounder (or under) and this came up at exactly 7lbs. Although it’s heavier than my Superlight TT I’m finding that playing full scale basses standing up is becoming a bit of a stretch hence my search. Got it from Guitar Village, my first time of dealing with them which I have to say was excellent. Sounds and plays beautifully, as I’d expect. I’m not really into fake relicing or blocks but somehow these just seem to really suit this bass.

  15. Sad to hear that - been there myself and only just now got out of it. Why not start an off-topic thread with your skill set stated ? Maybe someone here knows something … maybe their employer is hiring, which did actually happen to me this time.

  16. Gosh we can all be very precious about this. Any programme aimed at bass players would have a pretty small audience. This is a programme aimed at a wider public who have more than a superficial interest in music. The songs mentioned are generally not technical, but are ones someone aware of 'bass' (many 'music lovers' aren't - sorry to shatter your illusions) would appreciate as being part of their success. And, to be fair, a 'great bassline' is one that lifts a song beyond the everyday. Of course MY list would look very different, but this programme doesn't target me. I'm just grateful for a programme that will, hopefully, rause awareness and understanding of the role and potential of my chosen instrument and the people who play it.

  18. Dress rehearsal for tonight's gig. 90s and 00s indie classics. It was at Tweeters near Leatherhead. Big room full PA. Proper drum kit which the drummer always sounds better on, we use an electric one at our usual private place. In my never ending quest to find the one amp solution, I recently bought a TC Electronics BH800 bass amp. If I was to write a review of the BH800, I'd say it doesn't sound as good as other class D amps (my TecAmp Puma for example) until you start using the tone prints for the basic sound. Unfortunately there are only 2 tone prints, and I've loaded them with the 2 different dirt/fuzz effects I need for this band. Fortunately, one of the guitarists is lending me his Orange isobaric 4x10 bass cab, which sounds great. It's 8ohm and the BH800 (allegedly) kicks out 400w at 8ohm which is enough. We ploughed through the set and tidied up the 2 new songs we've added. TLDR it was great fun, and very good for my mental health.

  19. A couple of months ago, my eldest son was just starting his BTEC music course at high school, but didn't at that point play an instrument, so he needed to choose something..... Being a super cool kid, he obviously chose bass! 😅👌🥳❤️ He's just turned 15, what a great age to start! (I was 14) I was going to sell this cool little Ibanez GAXB150, but I gifted it to him instead. 😉 Some of his best pals are on the course too, and they've got a band going already, and have been super committed, and working hard to get where they want to be. They've even got their first performance at school next week! He's loving old school thrash metal, so we're off to see Anthrax this week too! 🤘😎 Happy times!

  21. Akai MPC Key 37 £490 reduced to £470 Excellent condition, I bought it new in October (can provide the £677 Amazon receipt) and it hasn't left the house. With box and additional Sandisk 256GB memory card worth about £20. Collection from Chichester, or I'm in central London on Mondays. Or if you want it posted we can discuss options. I'm aiming to get a 73 key stage piano keyboard - so I would consider trades. My feedback:

  22. Maximum use of space. Though now I look at a picture I see wonkiness, and I need a right angled Jack adapter to access the non xlr output of the microbass. Gigrig on the underside for power. Tuner is always on so that the guitarist can see what note I’m playing :).

  30. I thoroughly enjoyed that, I left it playing on repeat while decorating. Indie pop isn't my genre really, but as others have said, had an 80s feel, and could almost have been Blondie in a couple of places. There were some neat turns of phrase in the lyrics, particularly in the latter songs on the album. There's some talent developing there Available through Bandcamp, which is how I've bought the CD. https://tulparockband.bandcamp.com/album/monster-of-the-week

  31. Yes. I've used it for 2 rehearsals, one Church gig and one Pub gig. With another pub gig tomorrow evening. On all occasions it preformed as expected, a warm vintage sound that just sits in the mix so well. My iem mix and playing feel sounds like I'm using a 'real' amp. It's a definite keeper and I've sold off all my other preamp pedals because the BR15 is all I need. Highly recommended. 🎶🎶🎶🎶

  35. This quote reminds us all about the reality of what we do. We’ve probably all played venues where there is no sound check.Food venues are the worst, I’ve been told no noise until the punters finish eating and had to wait half an hour for ‘Uncle Albert’ to finish his pud on more than one occasion. The other issue is how you are amplifying the band. If most of what the audience hear is from back line you are pretty much stuffed in acoustically poor venues. You can re eq the bass , maybe damp the drums but good luck with trying to get the guitarist to make adjustments 😀 If you are silent stage and using a digital mixer then using your saved settings and global eq for the PA is the only option that makes sense. The room interactions are with just two speakers. You know what you are sending to the speakers is what you want the audience to hear so the master eq is the tool for getting that as good as possible. I suspect most people are doing something in between these approaches, some proportion of the sound coming from backline with PA backup filling in the gaps. In some ways the worst of all worlds. I’d still be using global eq for the PA though as a first resort, In the end you are stuck with the situation on the night and just have to do the best you can,

  36. Fair play Lozz 😀 Joking aside, it's really easy to set up a compressor incorrectly or so over the top that it destroys your dynamics, and I think it's because people don't understand what to do with them. And I don't mean that in a condescending or patronising way, but it takes a time and experience to get the best from them. With pedal compressors, my assumption people switch them on expecting an immediate and obvious change as you get with most stomp boxes and when that doesn't happen they either dial in up so it's clearly audible - by which point you've usually strangled the life out of your sound - or end up dismissing them as not doing anything. But when done right, it polishes up the bass and makes it slot into the mix more consistently. And it is more of a feel thing than a tonal one. For example, I was gigging last night and getting a bit carried away as usual and there's a few tracks we do that have large dynamic shifts and sometimes we exaggerate those from whisper quiet to full tilt. With the right settings, the lighter passages are uncompressed but as you dig in you can feel the compression pushing back and controlling the signal. There's still volume and dynamic shifts but they're controlled, I can dig in really hard and get an aggressive energy and while the volume increases it does so in a way that doesn't blow people's heads off. I mentioned my humble Boss LMB-3 earlier and this is what it excels at, once you're pushing against the threshold the pedal really adds something that I've not been able get any other compressor to replicate (a couple have come close, the most notable being the Basswitch dual band) the way it controls the signal and punches back at you, the bass still has the energy as you dig in but feels somehow bigger and more alive without too much of a volume increase. That's not to say compression is for everyone, there's lots of people who don't use them and that's fine too.

  38. Up for sale is my 2013 Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray Classic 4-string in Vintage Sunburst with a stunning AAA flamed / birdseye maple neck. This is one of the nicest figured Classic necks I’ve seen and the figuring runs all the way up the neck and headstock. Music Man confirmed the spec via their database (see screenshot) I’d conservatively describe as excellent but most people would use mint condition with only home practise use. No gigs, no marks, no issues. It plays beautifully, set up low with no buzz. Comes with some nice extras: Hipshot D-Tuner professionally fitted Original Music Man tuner included in the case Both black and white pickguards Original Music Man hard case Case candy (strap locks, keys etc) Specs 2-EQ Classic preamp Classic mute bridge in perfect working order Chrome hardware Weight: 4.5kg / 9.9 lbs These 2010–2014 Classics are becoming increasingly sought after, especially the ones with premium neck figuring. Prices are rising, and very few clean UK examples come up with this level of figuring. Only selling because I’m downsizing and moving to a Precision for home practice. Price £2,395. Folk are listing these with meh necks, damage and scratches and no extras like Hipshots and extra scratch plates on Reverb for more than this. Dealers would be way above this for a similar example. Open to sensible offers. Bass is located in Central Scotland handy for all major motorway networks, happy to meet within reasonable distance (I have rendezvoused with fellow Basschatters in the North of England before). Happy to discuss shipping with buyer, would prefer to remain within UK at this stage. Feedback I have excellent feedback on Basschat from many years on here, my latest deal being for my 78 Tony Franklin fretless with Beedster the forum legend who was delighted, so buy with confidence. Cheers.

  41. Considering selling this beautiful bass. I bought it for a specific gig where I needed a 4 string but find myself playing a 5 string jazz 95% of the time so it doesn’t get much use. I would consider trades for short or medium scale basses, preferably with cash my way, but would also consider topping up a bit for a Wilcock or similar. It’s nice and light (8.96lbs) and has a beautiful trans teal finish. I’ve included the original photos from Fender Fever as they show the colour better than mine do. It’s in great condition for its age, there’s some checking on the finish and a couple of dings. The two most noticeable being the one to the top left on the pickguard as you look at the bass, this is a a dent in the clear coat and hasn’t gone further. The other is a small ding in the back of the neck (see my photos), it’s small and doesn’t interfere with playing but wanted to mention. I’ve put noiseless fender pickups in it (using the original cream shells) but it will also come with the original single coils and black noiseless pickup covers. Any questions, let me know. Thanks

  43. Indeed. It could be your turn next. I would guess that most of us have experienced both sides of this particular coin. If A isn't that good then the band is unlikely to improve overall. I'd consider your own situation carefully.

  44. Not sure if I'm gatecrashing this thread here but I've recently hauled this oddity out of the Big Pile Of Near-Forgotten Basses: It's a 2004 Aria STB-GT, which would seem to fit the hybrid bill as it's an Aerodyne-ish P shaped body with a Jazz-proportioned maple/blocks neck, plus an MM pickup in the correct position! The original pre was pretty horrid - and constantly drained the battery, so I cleverly converted it to passive with series/parallel switching, only to find it sounded worse. So I sort of gave up - which is a shame as it's a great player and (IMO) looks amazing. However, 10 or so years later it's back on the slab as we speak, having a well-deserved hose-down & about (this afternoon, hopefully) to be fitted with a shiny new Retrovive Stinger Pre!

  45. Now 1800 ono Glorious bass. Want to keep it but can't justify (I'm up to 10 now, something's gotta give... My marriage, maybe...arf) Excellent condition. Some small marks on headstock. Hard fitted case (not Warwick). The price on the Warwick website to buy one of these new is mind-bending. This particular bass would be considered 'Masterbuilt' under today's classification. This bass was built in 2010 which was before they stamped them with the title (info from the Warwick forum). Trades considered. Any high end 5s or Vintage Fenders (with cash either way if agreeable). Thanks for looking!
