And so 'Frankie' is done all bar the set up ... but I'm letting her settle in and get used to being a bass again before going mad with the action. I brought her up to concert pitch with the nervousness of a bomb disposal officer sat astride a ticking World War aerial mine! Fresh in my mind the first imploding Chinese biscuit material bridge. I needn't have worried. Plenty of graphite in the bridge slots and she was a good'n. So from this to this And how does she sound? Well I'm gobsmacked by how loud she is, I mean the Superior Bassworks Dirty Gut Deluxe strings are not known for huge volume, but the power and projection the old girl has is quite remarkable. I'm getting rather fond of the way she appears jet black in some light and dark brown in others 🙂 Yep I need to cut the nut slots a smidge deeper, and the action could come down a good 4mm at the bridge and still be 'slap worthy'. The oil varnish needs to harden a while longer before it can have a good polish ... and I need to buy a rubber chicken to put inside the bass ... so that when folks ask 'what's the little hatch for?' ... I can reach in and produce it! So after a set up I'm going to look at pickups - ideally something that I can use an adaptor to plug into my Shadow Rockabilly Pro preamp - thus saving on buying two preamps to have both basses gig ready.10 points

So here's a game I play roughly once a year. I list a whole bunch of basses for sale (really not wanting to sell any of them you understand) and once a couple have actually sold 😩 I let the remaining listings slide down below the radar. Until the next time. I'm not selling because I'm desperate for the money, and if I was John Entwistle then I'd just keep the lot and have an ever-expanding collection, but the reality is that over half my basses get played very little, if at all. Common sense says that at least some of these lovely instruments should get back out in circulation. I have no interest at all in trades. Replacing a bass that doesn't get played with a different bass that won't get played seems like a complete waste of time and effort. On the other hand, many of my basses are pretty non-standard or left-field and therefore hard to price, so I'm not absolutely wedded to the figure stated. I'm in Harrow HA1, close to Sudbury Hill on the Piccadilly Line, and I gig regularly throughout Beds, Bucks, Herts & Middx, with occasional forays into Surrey. Pickup in person is always preferable to despatch (from home, or a mutually-convenient pub, or at one one of my gigs), but I've had nothing but good experiences with DPD so if you live more than - say - 50 miles from Harrow then that's an option. Right ... you want non-standard? Then non-standard you shall have. Is this the only Danelectro twin-neck in the UK? Dunno, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. File under "there's something you don't see every day". Basically someone bought two Danelectro Longhorn basses, sawed off the bits they didn't want, and glued the rest together. Or something. The tunders are the original, completely shitty design. They work as well as any other Danelectro tuners but are a big step down from a Fender or similar. From this angle, it looks vaguely Klingon to me. Shortscale, obviously. All original, all in good working order. This comes with a custom-built, fitted hardcase.6 points

Speaking of left-field ... I wanted a light-ish weight Jazz with a piezo pickup to make it easier at doubling gigs where I was switching between electric and double bass. This one is by Romanian luthier Christian Grosu, who trades as Grosman. But now, of course, both my frontline DBs have mag pickups. Sometimes I wonder why I bother.6 points

Sterling Stingray Short Scale This was one of my main basses when playing short scale instruments following hand surgery. It’s easy to get around because of the slim neck and 30” scale and enabled me to get back into gigging. This bass has a beautiful flamed roasted maple neck with birdseye board. The bass has three original tuners and a Hipshot D tuner fitted. It has a black pickguard fitted as well as the original pearl white one. It is well balanced and comfy to play over long gigs. It weighs 3.7kgs. The final picture shows it alongside a full size Stingray Special. Selling as I no longer need it. It is a lovely bass and I kept it in preference over two EBMM US made short scale Stingrays. Postage in the UK will be £20 if you can’t pick it up in person. No trades and it is a UK sale only sorry.5 points

Lovely very light jazz bitsa bass. I've just bought a super G&L SB2 Tribute from Matt in Aberdeen and need to stick to my one-in-one out policy (severe risk of divorce if I don't stick to this promise...). This bass has been owned by quite a few Basschatters and I bought it off cdog and am selling it for what I bought it for off him. It's a superbly playable bass which sounds fantastic with a terrific neck and is perfect for anyone who wants to gig with a jazz bass without the back pain. Key specs are: Weight 3.2kg - Empress wood body. Bridge is a Gotoh 201B Tuners are Hipshot Ultralights Pickups are Entwistles - Neck is ceramic and Bridge Neo Kiogon Jazz loom with Alpha pots. All cavities are insulated with copper tape. F-decal. There are more details on the other threads on this bass over the the years on Basschat. I have the box Matt sent the G&L in so can post.5 points

So here's a game I play roughly once a year. I list a whole bunch of gear for sale (really not wanting to sell any of it you understand) and once a few things have actually sold 😩 I let the remaining listings slide down below the radar. Until the next time. I'm not selling because I'm desperate for the money, and if I was John Entwistle then I'd just keep the lot and have an ever-expanding collection, but the reality is that over half my gear gets used very little, if at all. Common sense says that at least some of this lovely kit should get back out in circulation. I have no interest at all in trades. Replacing an amp or cab that doesn't get used with a different amp or cab that won't get used seems like a complete waste of time and effort. On the other hand, much of my kit is pretty non-standard or left-field and therefore hard to price, so I'm not absolutely wedded to the figure stated. Made for me years ago by those lovely folk in Huddersfield, my bad back was at its worst when I ordered it so they undertook to build me the lightest GT100 in captivity. When you're talking about old-school valve amps, "light" is a relative sort of word. This is absolutely not a disguised Class D. Even in super-lightweight form, this beastie still weighs about 15Kg and is an awkward sod to manoevre in tight spaces - those grab handles at the front aren't there because they look good. It's like stepping back 50/60 years, and there are settings that make my bassline sound like it's being filtered through melted chocolate to fill the room, any room. I paired it with a Barefaced 2x12. I imagine it would sound even more majestic with an old-school rig to match its own status. Comes with appropriate very heavy-duty Speakon cable. And an honest-to-God, f***-off flight case built just for it. Which weighs darn near as much as the amp, of course. The price is very low, I know, but that's OK. I just want to see it back in action in the hands of a highly-qualified weight-lifter who also plays bass.4 points

Great bass for a country band, but I haven't played country since Covid. I don't know the year but this bass is at least 30 years old. It looks the way a well-used bass should look and bears no resemblance to anything relic'd. OK, so my photography doesn't reach David Bailey heights. The neck is a J-bass type and very playable indeed. That says "Made in Japan", in case you were wondering. And don't forget the piezo under the bridge.4 points

The TE-1200 and LFSys Monza are a match made in heaven. As @Phil Starr says, it's the amp I use, and I arrived at it having tried a lot of different heads over the years. Because of the high power of the Trace, you have to be sensible with the volume control, but your ears will be ringing before you overload the cab.4 points

Live Aid for me was the start of me taking up bass and getting into music. I had just turned 15 and was aware of music due to my two sisters constantly playing all the big groups of the 80's like Duran Duran, The Police, Level 42, Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet etc. My dad was also into his big band Jazz and my mum was into her singers like Barry Manilow, Val Doonican, The Carpenters etc. So my childhood was full of music constantly playing in every room of the house. I hadn't at that time really gotten into music of my own as I was more into BMX and computer games but I came in from BMX'ing and sat down and by pure accident turned on the TV and saw the U2 set. I was blown away by it but mostly by Adam Clayton, strutting around the stage, with his black DM's, looking super cool, playing this beaten up Jazz bass and at that point I decided, that's what I want to do, I want to do what he's doing, I want some of that. From then on in, I got into music, took up the bass and the rest as they say is history.4 points

With a very heavy heart, up for sale is my 2007 Rickenbacker 4003 in Blue Burst. She comes with the original case and cloth, Original Strap Pins, Ricky Sounds Stereo-Rama and cables, matching strap. The bass is in lovely condition, just a few chips on the head as pictured. The case however is a little damaged also pictured, but still very useable. This is the fourth 4003 I have owned and easily the nicest. Those that are observant will notice the strap positioning on the top horn has been relocated to the inside of the body, this was done by the previous owner, but I have found it a slight improvement regarding balance compared with my previous Rickys, but horses for courses I guess. UK sale only, might consider using a courier, at your expense, assuming I can obtain some decent packaging. But would prefer a pick up from me, Coffee and biscuits will be happily provided - please note full courier insurance won’t be cheap. Some (hopefully) helpful specs: Body: Maple Neck: Rosewood Controls: Volume, Volume,Tone, Tone (Push/Pull Vintage) String Spacing: 18mm Nut Width: 43mm Weight: 4.25kg Kindest Regards, Steve. Ps. I am away for two weeks from Friday 18th of July, so you need to get in quick or have some patience 😉3 points

I'm a lil' late with this but my main squeeze (Felis Leo) had a gig on Saturday afternoon. A bit of background...the only promoter who will offer us a gig in town offered us a gig at a village pub, seven bands starting at 3pm. The gig was offered and Paul deals with it, we all say yes after a day of back n forth. Paul gets back to the promoter with a yes and gets told the gig's been offered elsewhere as we took too long. Paul takes umbrage at this and we get the gig, we're the first band on and we've got 30 mins! Paul is a quiet fella and slight but he don't do flaky. I've promoted the hell out of this one as I always do and we get the occasional comment about how much we promote our gigs, I usually have a day off work during the week and post loads. I get to the venue and the rest of the band and our 1 fan are there saying "we're not sure if we're playing" 🤔 they then show me the poster and our logo and the band after us have been removed and these posters are all over the pub! Jon, our singer, said we're not on the Salisbury Gig Guide either! Brian the SE said our name was on his list so we started to set up under a tiny gazebo (the only shade in 30+° heat 🥵). The 3pm start time also came and went as the guys were still setting up, there was a pile of cardboard next to their van and it was pointed out to me that the PA speakers were brand new (and big!). Quick soundcheck, everything good and away we go! The sound on the tiny stage was just mash potatoes, I was stood next to my cabs so found it hard to hear myself. There seemed to be a humming noise coming from a new speaker and Brian was fiddling with the back of it. I looked at the (sparse) audience and they seemed to be enjoying it, nobody was covering their ears or wincing so it must be ok. About 10 minutes into the set Brian goes to his van and comes back with the instructions for the new speakers! I kid you not, proper Spinal Tap moment... I'm looking at him reading and then looking at the band and...it was just a weird, tense gig, difficult to explain but you don't know if there's a problem or not and you're just trying your best to get through it 😂 Anyway, the gig went great! There were some small teething problems but our 1 fan who filmed some of it said we sounded really powerful (big, new speakers), the bassist of another band said we were really tight (should've bought him a drink but didn't 😄) and other comments were really positive. Maybe the tension and playing by your wits is the way forward 😬 We broke our RnR rule by wearing shorts I'm afraid, Darrell the drummer is allowed shorts but we're not...it was hot though! I used my lakland 55-02 through a TC electronic BH 550 into a pair of Barefaced one10s propped up on one corner due to an uneven stage surface (dead grass 😂).3 points

Just a quick message to let everyone know that John of Noise Works did a fantastic job of fixing an awful banana neck on an eBay-acquired 1979 Shergold Marathon bass. I bought said bass a couple of months back and did everything I could (truss rod, low tension strings, filed some proud frets etc) but the bass was virtually unplayable - looks like it had sat in its case unplayed for years with high tension Rotosound steels. I tried the Shergold forum on FaceBook (thanks @ash for reminding me of this forum) and some peeps recommended John. Eventually I went with their advice. Over the course of a few weeks, John heat clamped the neck, fixed the dents and bumps on the back of the neck and levelled/polished the frets. The result is a slick playing, low action bass with loads of 70s/80s cred. Very reasonable price and friendly service too. Recommended!3 points

Without wanting to derail anything, OldGit's Shuker 5-string P was utterly gorgeous. I played a whole gig with it once and the thing was just alive in my hands. When he had it built, there was no such thing as an off-the-peg 5-string P.3 points

Back in the 90s I auditioned for a band in Swindon... it quickly became apparent that their original material was utterly dire, so I slapped my way through one of the songs in an attempt to deliberately fail the audition it seemed to work3 points

had a rehearsal with the Church Band last night (we're not really a church band, it's just that the vicar lets us rehearse in our local church - who knows why as none of us are at all religious!)... Drums sound great in there though, wot with it being large and Norman! Annoyingly, singer couldn't make it as she currently has no car and being rural, public transport is non-existent (we'd go and pick her up, except she's 1/2 and hour away!). It's slightly alarming as I may have got us a charity gig (our first gig!)organised by a local Actual Rock Star next month and she's only done two rehearsals with us. However, we seem to have got over guitar-man's inability to be funky and his constant pentatonic noodling - now there's far more rhythm and solos actual stand out. I've also settled on a slightly overdriven envelope follower sound on the Helix which makes things even funkier. Not only that, but we've done a blues GoGo song in the style of Trouble Funk, and a Sly Stone style blues.3 points

Got through 2 ½ hours of rehearsal with the originals band tonight. Finalised arrangements for three songs and started tidying up a fourth. Quite chuffed as two of the songs I'm using a plectrum and my technique is starting to tidy up - the P sounds awesome through my gigging rig. For one song in Bb I use my tuner as a capo on the E string... Have tried to apply a bit of music theory to my basslines and it's starting to pay off with some non-obvious melodic lines on the quieter songs. Have confidence I can survive gigging this weekend.3 points

Brilliantly funny post, Jack.. 😂 For what looks like a really amazing amp! And this has got to be the best description of a bass amp's sound that I've seen on here for a long time: "It's like stepping back 50/60 years, and there are settings that make my bassline sound like it's being filtered through melted chocolate to fill the room, any room." Instantly made me think of how I (very fondly) remember the sound of my old Ampeg V4BH rig... But I have too much gear myself these days and not enough gigs to use it all either... But something like this Matamp amp is still sooooo tempting... So, what can I say other than 'get thee behind me Satan', and to wish you the best of luck with the sale! 👍😊3 points

My work here is done - for now. Having considered putting an HX Stomp on my board I finally opted for an HX One on the basis that I rarely use effects and then only one at a time. Also swapped out the Mooer baby tuner for a Boss TU-2. It all runs from a battery.3 points

I've been playing reggae for most of my musical life, as well as other genres. However, i have never used any kind of 'effects' on a bass. I'm not against using them at all, i just have not been in any musical situation where i felt the need. I got into a conversation with a bass player recently who plays in a few reggae tribute bands and he was telling me he uses effects on all the songs. To my ears, the only bass effects i have heard are when a synth bass line is being played on a keyboard and not a bass guitar. He was attempting persuade me to go down the effects route too, but for reggae i'm too much of a puritan to even consider it given that most of the classic reggae was played on very cheap basic basses. I can get the sound i need from my bass and eq-ing my rig. I do remember trying the sub button on a backline bass rig once when setting up but it sounded like mud so off it went. Any one else using effects for playing reggae, what and why. I know it's each to their own so not trying to be judgemental, just curious to understand. Responses for reggae only please so the thread does not go off at a tangent. 👍🏾🎶2 points

Polyphonic pitch detection is very difficult, requiring lots more resources than monophonic tracking. That’s not to say it couldn’t perhaps be done as one of the two currently-unused apps in the pedal. Polyphony/paraphony has already been under discussion (for MIDI-triggered uses). I’d like to push the idea of on-pedal patch management as that will benefit all users.2 points

After the Live Aid performance, U2 very nearly split up. The rest of the band were furious with Bono for taking over and interacting with the crowd which forced the band to cut the song Pride which was at the time a huge hit for them, especially in the States. They ended up playing a 12 minute version of the song Bad due to Bono going off to interact with the crowd which meant they didn't have time to play their current hit single and the rest of the band felt like they were just passengers during the performance whilst Bono did his thing.2 points

Last Sunday, this bass appeared on the Dutch marketplace website. Within an hour, I was driving an hour and a half to pick it up for a ridiculous price. The owner didn't really know what it was, I guess. He said he got higher bids when I was on my way, but as I was already on my way and was the first, I got it for my original bid. When I arrived, it looked less mint than on the photos. It was mainly dirty and had been in a case for years and years. The strings were ancient, too, and the neck pickup didn't seem to work. So I even got a bit off the price and took it home. It just felt right. Cleaned it today, gave it some new strings, a good setup and it's a great bass. The neck pickup does work, but the pot is a bit wonky. Might replace that, might not. I might sell it, might not. It has a great Jaco vibe to it. The first sunburst Jazz I've ever owned that I really like (not a fan of sunburst in general). I have one question: I understand the date of course, but what does the stamp on the heel mean?2 points

I met Dave Swift at the same Bass Bash and asked him about this. He said if he used a flat-wound B string it sounded ‘like a football hitting a sheep’! No-one has mentioned Dingwalls yet, so… Dingwalls. Most will be aware that they (and other fan-frets) overcome the common problem of indistinct B strings by using a different scale length for each string. I had a Super P (with 35in B) that did the 5-string Precision thing brilliantly. I only traded it because I discovered I liked the tightness of a 37in B.2 points

Here's a rough idea of costs (from my rusty memory so not exact). Estimates include delivery per item. HB PB-50 - £105 Neck - £70 Covers - £70 Inserts and Bolts - £25 Lefty tuners - £10 So I reckon I am into this for £280 (ish). I already had the Makita, tools, rubber mallet, files, sandpaper, pack of plasters, eye drops, paracetamol etc.... I know I wouldn't get my money back on it, but that is not the point. I suppose I could sell the original HB neck but I'm not that bothered to be honest, it can sit on the shelf as an ornament!2 points
