  1. Just wanted to say a very happy new year to everyone, have a great evening whatever you are getting up to! Look forward to speaking to some of you in 2025

  2. I've been a bit lax in here lately. Fewer gigs and some life stuff getting in the way... The last one of the year was supporting Ferocious Dog at Holfirth Picturedrome which is an awesome venue. I'm on drums and I've badly sprained an intercostal muscle or two, so was very apprehensive as I'd been resting for 2 weeks. The other guys all moved my gear for me which was most appreciated (normally I do most of the loading so the van was a right mess 🤣). I set up on the stage in front of the drum riser, which can often lead to cramped conditions but this is a big stage and my bass drum is very shallow. Sound check was great but I could feel twinges in my chest. It was a 50 minute set which seems very long for a support slot. The first 30 minutes went pretty well, but then the pain really started to kick in. I made quite a few mistakes in the last few songs. Thankfully the rest of the band were very understanding, and of course, no-one in the audience noticed. They were singing along in full voice and cheering at the end of every song.

  3. Just back from our New Year's Eve Eve gig. It was a sold out ticket-only event in a village hall that holds 130, organised by the woman that used to own the village pub and who still owns a catering company. Nice little stage, not too high. However the venue has the typical village hall reverberation due to all the hard surfaces. The Sterling Sub Ray5 was lovely and clear through my Rumble (Retrovibe Stinger preamp) though. Slightly slow start, but didn't take long to pack the dance floor. We ended the night with a 2 hour set to keep the party going. Boy was it hot! I have the day off work tomorrow to rest up for NYE. That's an "Oscar" theme night, so it's going to be even hotter in the dinner suit and bow tie. Good money though - kerching!

  4. In stark contrast, it was just the final rehearsal session of the year last night - no gig tonight either. I'm trying to stay away from Christmas and new year gigs nowadays - I know they're very lucrative and enjoyable (if properly organised and well attended), but for me it's all the time in the run up and breaking down afterwards that takes the shine off it. I'm now very much a spectator to the event. We're currently putting together a full set of material for our next main gig, which is still Patrick's day in a local (Irish owned) pub. It was the first outing for my new Martin short scale acoustic bass as well........

  6. Yes, I’m with you on that. I’ve got to turn up at 6pm this evening but our first set doesn’t start until 9pm and we expect to go on until around 1am. Then breakdown and home. It’s quite a long way down steps from the car park at this pub as well and it’s a dep job. Doubt I’ll be home much before 3am. Fortunately, I enjoy playing with this band and I like their set list. More after the gig….. I optimistically signed up for the 100 press ups a day in January challenge, to raise funds for Cancer Research. I think day one might be a bit hard after getting to bed at 3am! 😬

  7. Last Sunday jam of 24 , lots of good players up. Parking was the usual pain but found a spot around the corner. Played a bit later than usual , all good. The new dive is working out well. The original bar was a bit outside the downtown core , more walk in traffic at the new spot. All in all a great way to finish the year. I’ll be home NYE. Rheo using my bass here , he loves that big orange Gretsch. I’ll have a new power amp under Monique in several weeks. Looking forward to the slight rig change.

  11. Ken doesn’t make them himself anyway so whether they’re ’in house’ or ‘in someone else’s house’ is kind of immaterial. It’s more likely that Brubaker found him hard to work with and now Ken is making it sound like they were the problem and trying to sell the new ‘in house’ basses. Over the years various parts of the production have been outsourced anyway.

  12. I just spent a wonderful couple of hours at Ben's (the double bass room). He pre-picked out a collection of basses that met my requirements and I've come away with a lovely Hungarian bass. (And a tummy full of chocolate digestives) It just goes to show how useful it is to try loads of basses out, since it is not in a million years what I expect to get! I thought I was going to get a slightly battered, old, dark wood bass to cherish into it's old age but came away with a much more modern lighter coloured bass. Very very happy.

  13. Saturday, Redonizm were back at The Cow & Telescope in Southend, one of our favourite venues in the area. Being that awkward Saturday between Christmas and New Year, we were unsure what the turn out would be. The pub was almost empty when we arrived and when my wife, bother, sister-in-law and a coulple of friends arrived around 8.30 the audience size doubled! But we needn't have worries, people started trickling in, including a lot of regulars, around 9pm and got quite busy by the time we started at 9.30. We get to got a little heavier in this place, which is nice, but still kept a few of the party anthems that always work, anywhere we play. In fact, it's getting harder to choose which songs not to play these days! That said, I was hesitant to play Dakota and Sex on Fire that one of the singers had included in the setlist, at this particular venue, as they're done to death (the new mustang sally). But they went down more that okay. In fact the regulars have their own call and response thing for Dakata that made it even better. Like having our own choir. All in all a really good night and a perfect end to the year. This was out 4th weekend out in a row, so set up seemed much simpler, and I wasn't aching as much as I normally would at the end of the night either. I could have kept going for another half hour, no problem. Just goes to show that your body gets used to things after repetition! Got a break from gigging for couple of months now. Time to work on new material, technical stuff and working on marketing stuff, not to mention booking some more dates in the diary!

  14. It’s the usual story of instant attraction and lust, and then the heartbreak. I innocently wandered into BassBros (yup, fatal) with no intention of buying anything, and saw this. Plugged it in, played it for about three hours (sorry Will), tried quite a few other basses, mainly Rays, kept coming back to this, and bought it. All was well until the first gig when the band thought that it didn’t sit so well with our traditional sound (too powerful), whereas my Jazz bass did, and I can kinda hear what they mean. I’ve hung onto it for a bit, but as it won’t be earning its keep, and I have some costs coming up, I may as well move it on, albeit reluctantly. Plays great, sounds awesome (read the reviews), and is perceived to sound like a slightly more aggressive Stingray, but with two more tone options via the three way switch. There’s quite a few out there that prefer Sterlings to Rays, because of the tone options and smaller body. For a 25 year old bass it’s in very good condition, with only a few marks on the body and a slightly discoloured area on the back where someone had once placed a sticker, which is subtle and a pig to capture with a photo on a December evening, indoors. The electronics all work perfectly. Weighs just over 10 lbs, and the slightly smaller than a Ray body is just so much more comfortable. I paid £1,250 – I’ve seen a few at £1,250-£1,400 on Reverb recently – so I’ll take the traditional ‘hit’ and offer it up at £1,050, firm. It comes with two pickguards, and a Warwick gig bag. Would prefer a meet up at a mutually convenient spot. Here’s the BassBros link to the original post: https://bassbros.co.uk/sold-basses/1999-ernie-ball-music-man-sterling-4-usa-2/ …and here’s my inferior photos

  16. I can’t think of any disadvantage using a lined fretless bass until You’re blind, in that case You could possibly save few bucks by buying unlined… I have owned several fretlesses, always lined. I’ve played them hundreds of live, theatre and studio gigs so I pretty well know sometimes those lines can be real life savers. I`ve never ponytailed my hair but it was very long indeed something like 40 years ago and didn`t always wear a suit. Here is the fretless I use these days, lovely Sadowsky N.Y.C. modern 5 wich I ordered lined, of course. I wish very Happy New Year to all of You basschatters!

  18. I'll be leaving home at 3pm today. At venue 4pm, set up and sound check with doors open 7pm. No confirmed times as yet apart from finishing 11:45pm to allow a piper to bring in the bells at midnight. Will need to wait till the piper has finished before getting changed and stripping down the gear. I'm expecting i'll be home 2:30-3am so its basically a 12hr day for me. I don't really mind the set up as its usually closed doors until we've sound checked but the strip down can be a nuisance at times. Tonight's venue has a load in door next to stage area so that's good news. It also has a ramp over part of the small staircase so using trolleys makes it far easier. Dave

  19. I'd just like to register my thanks to @neepheid for his sterling work last year, and to @Richard R for stepping up this year. And to sign up for a bass gear free 2025. (That funny noise in the background is the rest of my band sniggering 😀).

  26. I already own an Ashbory Mk 2, the original black model, of which there were only 90 made so they're pretty rare. Clive Cherry then made a run of ten Mk 2s with Brazilian mahogany bodies, bookmatched flame maple tops and headstock facing. I've always fancied one of these but with them being so rare, never expected to get one. For some reason, probably because I'd recently mentioned how almost none of my instruments were painted, I had a look on Ebay a few days ago and there it was! One cheeky offer later and it was mine - when it arrived it was missing the unobtanium bridge cover but it had been sitting in a shop waiting to be sold on commission and the cover had got left there, so it's on its way to join me.

  27. Well… it’s nowt fancy as I absolutely do not believe in pedals 😂 But, needs must - a sonicake reverb for the track I play baritone on, and a chordy moment. Just added the Marshall Regenerator as it covers Chorus/Flanger/Phaser for 2 songs. If I was a richer man, I would’ve bought a more boutique set of pedals - but to be fair, the Nether is exactly right for that OC2 type noise, the ODB3 is used as a subtle drive for a couple of tunes - the Iron Man (by @LukeFRC) is brilliant - gets used for 3 songs… Synth type sounds are now available if I need them by combining drive/mod/oct… Works for me. The pedal PSU and Board were bought with an Amazon Voucher…all in all, not a big outlay.

  29. Although it seems counter intuitive it's a symptom of mass production. If you have machines and workers set up to make fretted necks, you don't need to change anything to make lined fretless necks. However an unlined neck needs a new worker/bench etc as it has the side dots in a different place, so becomes more expensive to make

  31. Get home safe. I have it a little easier if everything goes right. "Hey guys sorry a bit late. Load in tomorrow at Precinct around 2:30/2:45, doors open at 3:30, showtime @4🤘🏻👍🏻" It's only an 18 minute commute. However, I'm concerned about the forecasted fog and driving on back country roads. I'll help tear down which means getting home at 8:30. Daryl

  36. Think the guys from Lateral Flow have had a rough time recently with Brian their bass player suffering from a very serious illness. Because our gig in Dundee got cancelled Lateral Flow and The Dreadnought venue offered anyone with a ticket for our gig would get free access for the Lateral Flow gig on Sat night. What a fantastic gesture of goodwill from both the band and the venue. Seriously thought about going along but having a badly twisted ankle from Xmas day i decided best to stay at home and rest it. Think the Wheatsheaf is worth avoiding by sounds of it. @grapefruitmoon At least you had a great night out in The Dreadnought to take your minds off it. Take care and hopefully get to see you guys at some point. Dave

Shoreline Gold Light Aged, pretty rare and in excellent condition. BLACK SMOKER is a workshop in Nagano, Japan. This is a 5-string passive PB model with all nitro lacquer finish. Alder body, maple neck, and beautiful Indian rosewood fingerboard. The tuners and bridge are made by GOTOH, and the pickups are BLACK SMOKER original. It has a beautiful shoreline gold color with light aging. Truss rod: No problem, confirmed to 60 degrees to the left and right. Neck condition: No problem, all straight with low action. Frets: like new condition, not much use at all. Case: Ritter Soft case Serial number: 23J20 Weight: 3.99kg

  42. So after a lot of thinking over Xmas, I decided I didn't like the pedalboard that I downloaded from elsewhere and wanted to design my own so that's its smaller in height, quicker to print, looks a lot better and has exactly the same surface areas as before. I might even sell them if I get any interest Here's the design, its about 20mm lower than before, prints around twice as quick as before, is just as strong as before. Each piece can take 100Kg of weight, so between them, that's over 600Kg so it'll support the corner of a small car, it uses less filament (50%) than before and has the same surface area as the old design. It still uses the same 20x40mm aluminium extrusion but now it looks a lot neater as the extrusion fits into the sides rather than sits on top of the sides. I also raised the back by 25mm so there is no need for risers under a pedal. This is now designed properly so I can easily adapt it to make it wider or taller or longer. The Cioks power supply will still go underneath it and be bolted to the bottom of the extrusions. I'm printing this up now and will post pictures when it's done. Rob

  44. This happened to the full band version of my 80s duo. With the drummer, at least half of the set was totally live and a few songs have so much backing vocals, we did cheat and use a very stripped down backing track. Then the drummer didn't want to do pub gigs any more, so we just added the drums to the already used tracks and downloaded the drum bits for the other songs. It's all 80s stuff and we dont miss the drummer at all (and we get more money each, set up, pack down all easier too) we're all used to BT so it doesnt cause any grief
